System Prefs: Classic showing up

All of a sudden, I noticed the classic pref showing up. I do not even have it installed. The only things I have installed lately are Disk Warrior, MacTracker, and OmniOutliner....
any ideas why it would just pop up out of the blue??

This happens randomly and I had the same issue while ago. Go to /System/Library/PreferencePanes. There you'll find Classic.prefPane. Remove it and Classic will be gone in Sys Prefs. I prefered to make an archive of it so I did not delete it completely in case I might need it back some day...

  • System Prefs not showing all disks

It's been some time since I backed up and I've just copied over to my Lacie 500 drive the contents of my main drive. On checking with Startup Drive in System Prefs I note that I don't see the Lacie nor my second HD which I use with FCP editing content. (I was going to treat my Lacie to being the startup Drive as a test). What I have sshowing is the normal HD startup drive and Network Startup showing. No second HD nor the Lacie. In About This Mac, no Lacie drive is showing.
What have I cocked up, if anything?

I'm wondering why mine now aren't! I've cocked up something and maybe the drives need validating?
I thought this was answered. You copied over the contents of your internal either by dragging or using copy and paste. Startup Disc is looking for volumes that will boot the computer; that's why it's called "startup..." I'm beginning to think your drives were never bootable and therefore, never available in Startup Disc.
You can continue using these drives as data drives by dragging things over, but if you want a bootable drive -- and this can be very useful if your internal ever fails, and be up and running right away, or if the internal, startup Volume starts to show serious problems, in which case you can always do a reverse clone from a healthy external back to the internal -- you need to make a clone.
There are two distinct ways you have of creating a bootable, i.e. startup copy of your Internal. You can use Restore from Disc Utility, or, generally much more practical, you can use a cloning application.
There are several; the one I use, which is excellent and is freeware, is Carbon Copy Cloner. Once you do the initial clone, CCC offers the option of doing incremental backups. This will keep the clone looking exactly like the internal (or, since it's a MacPro, secondary drive.)
There is lots of documentation about using CCC and help for getting started at the site.

You need to start from a clean, properly Formatted (this is done from the Partitioning area of DU) drive. See this about Formatting. (You have to find out if your MacPro is PPC or Intel. PPC will be Formatted APM (Apple Partition Map) and Intel will be Formatted GUID. For that, look in the Apple Menu> About this Mac>More info> Processor.) Note that Formatting will erase all the data currently on the drive.

  • 30 inch Apple Cinema Display-system prefs not showing native resolutions

The 30 inch Apple Cinema Display, seems to be working fine with the mac pro, but when I try to hook up the 2009 mini, the display preferences do not show the mini's native resolution of 1920x1200.  The maximum it shows is 1280x800, and only gives a few other choices.  This mini had once been attached to a TV monitor, so I am wondering if that has something to do with the lack of choices in the system preferences.  Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the system preferences to display the correct info so that I can adjust the resolution ?
    Thanks

Being compatible with the 24-inch Cinema Display and being able to use it at resolutions higher than 1280 by 800 doesn't necessarily mean that it can drive the 30-inch Cinema Display at its full resolution. You need to use a dual-link DVI connection as stated above.

  • System Prefs show Airport "OFF" but in menu bar I can turn on... pls look

    Good day.
System Profiler sees the Airport card however shows no network. (This has been running with no problems for months)
System Prefs, Network shows the Airport card as "OFF" even tho I can turn it "on" up on the menu bar. (it takes two times to turn it on via the network bar)
It still cannot see the network. (I am 802.11n everywhere and I'm using my MBP on the network I've been using for months)
The bottom line is I can't get my MacPro 3.0Ghz to see the network and the system profes show it's on even tho I can turn it on and off via the network bar.
Note: I've also plugged in a airport express via the Mac Pro's enet port and it simply cannot see it.
    Any advise please.
    Thanks
    Tom

I am having a very similar problem. Did you find any fixes for this?
I have a snow base station and have no problems connecting to it with a clamshell iBook running OS X. But with my PowerBook G4, whenever I turn Airport on and try to access the base station, the airport status icon constantly flashes, almost like a pulse.
Today I took my PowerBook to a hot spot, and Airport worked great, so I know that my card is fine.
One thing I'm wondering about -- what firmware are you using on your base station? I currently have 4.0.4, so it's possible that upgrading to 4.0.9 will solve this problem. I'm reluctant for the moment to try the firmware upgrade because the clamshell iBook connects to the snow base station so smoothly. I don't want to mess up one set-up while trying to fix another.
I'll check back in case you have new information, including (I hope) a fix for this.

  • System prefs for kids- Question

I have just created a user account with parental settings for my young child learning to read/write. without giving his account admin privileges, can I, as admin, create specific system prefs like a larger pointer and slower mouse/trackpad settings that work only on his account? I don't want to have to constantly go in ad set them back after every time he uses the computer. If not, Is there a quick way to toggle on/off of universal access?

thanks for the fast reply, however I am now experiencing even more problems.(not your fault, mine) It seems no matter how i set up the account ( simple finder or not) I cant block system prefs, and show the apps I want shown. Currently have prenatal monitoring on for the new(kids) account, and specified per the checkboxes what i want to give him access to. When i log out of my admin account and into his (Managed with parental controls) every thing is still accessible. I have also went into sys prefs and made sure that parental monitoring is turned on for that account. I never thought it would be so hard to do this

  • HT1338 i lost my iphone and my macbook pro does not show the icloud in system pref. What do i do? how do i download icloud?

I lost my iphone and my macbook pro does not show the icloud in system pref. how do i get icloud on my mac?

iCloud is only available in Lion, 10.7. You will have to upgrade to Lion in order to get into iCloud. If you transfered a .mac or .me address to iCloud through mobile me, or you have another device iCloud enabled, then you can log into the iCloud.com website.

  • How can i use my smart TV as a second monitor for my Power mac (2010) via HDMI cable? i've made the connection but no options show in system prefs display.

How can i use my smart TV as a second monitor for my Power mac (2010) via HDMI cable? i've made the connection but no options show in system prefs display.
    the computer:Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.9.5), 2 x 2.66 Ghz 6-Core intel Xeon
    the TV: LG Smart tv

The Mac uses a highly-parameterized universal Driver for every display. The parameters are set at certain times when a query is sent to your display. The display MUST answer with its name and capabilities, or the screen stays dark. A TV set that is off or "not paying attention" because it is set to a different port when the query occurs will rarely answer, and so will often remain dark.
You can use tools in the System Report to see whether your display has been detected at all. If it has, the report will look something like this, but its name will appear:
The times when the query is sent are:
    • at Startup
    • at wake from sleep
    • when the Mac-end of the cable is inserted
    • when using the Option ( Detect Displays ) button in displays preferences

  • TS4006 How do I add iphone4s to iCloud's "find my phone"? I turned on macbook pros system prefs to "find my phone", turned on iphone4s's "location services" and set up iCloud, etc. iPhone4s still won't show-but macbook does show. It receives gmail, weathe

How do I add my new iPhone4s to iCloud's "Find my iPhone"? I followed the iCloud instructions and turned on Macbook Pros' system prefs to "find my mac", turned on iPhone4s's "location services" and set up iCloud, etc. In the "Find my iphone" tab of my new iCloud account (on my Macbook Pro) my iPhone4s still won't show—but my macbook does show. I had my iPhone4s set up at the phone store (2 days ago) and It receives gmail, my contacts and calender entries, the weather, etc. I installed the "Find iPhone" app from iTunes on the iPhone4s, synched to iTunes, even reset the phone, but the only device that gets located is my Macbook Pro. I can send a "sound" message to my Mac (and the Mac recieves it) but unable to see the iPhone4s from my Mac, let alone send any message. Any suggestions to get the iPhone4s device to appear in iCloud?
Thank you in advance for your help.

OK, I figured it out...I deleted the iCloud account off my iPhone (Settings, iCloud, Delete Account), and then added iCloud back in (Settings, iCloud, SignIn)....and then my email (iCloud) and "Find my phone" features worked! Nice!!!!

  • All emails in Mail, Thunderbird and Postbox show only this example date in System Prefs 05.01.2013. Skype has the same error in short messages. Only Mail Pilot has the correct dates. I'm using Mavericks

Hello, all my emails in Mail, Thunderbird, Postbox show the same date 05.01.2013 which is the example in System Prefs.
    Skype also in short messages.
Only Mail Pilot resists and shows all dates in the correct manner.
I'm using Mavericks. But I have another account also with Mavericks without this rare behavior!

Okay, I realized a lot of my questions related to Gmail. I figured out a few, but if you are a Gmail expert and know why I'm getting errors trying to sync that one folder then please let me know.

  • Unable to select modem in the "Show" field in System Prefs, Network

I think I may have asked this in the wrong place before. I really would appreciate any help or advice anyone can give!!
I've just moved and I'm trying to get the modem there to work with my iBook G4. The modem definitely works and it's all definitely set up (my boyfriend's sorted his out on his PC), just not with my computer.
In the user guide (from the provider - Tiscali) I'm told to go to System Prefs (fine), Network (fine), select Location as "ADSL USB PPPoE/PPPoA" (fine) but then I encounter a problem - I am told to set the "Show" field just below to the modem name (which comes up in my Network status as "Ethernet Adaptor (en2)", so my computer is recognising it). However, this isn't an option. Also, when I go to the screen where I can prioritise the internet connections (Network Status?? Sorry for not being more specific - I'm at work and on a PC) "Ethernet Adaptor (en2)" is there but grey, as in I can't select it.
Any ideas what I can do? I've installed all of the CD and did my restarting, I have the modem plugged in and my computer is recognising this, and the people at Tiscali said I'd have to contact Apple for help but I decided to give here a try.
    Thank you !
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.5)   Tiscali Broadband, Sagem F@st 800 Modem

Please don't misunderstand, but many of the Internet service providers in the UK and much of Europe use USB Modems and they are fair to poor at best.
Another point of intrest is that all of these same Internet Service Providers also have and offer Ethernet Modems as well as Ethernet Modem Routers.
I think it must be a cost issue for them. Another point is the technology is exactly the same weather you have a PC or a MAC, the reason they all point the finger in another direction , they have few Mac Techs available, when PC's hold the majority of the market. Another point, you shouldn't need to download there software to make stuff work.
Here are a couple of links that will for sure help.
    http://www.adslguide.org/guide/summary.asp
Here is one of several that are Ethernet instead of USB from your provider.

  • Security tab no longer showing in System Prefs.

    Hi
I have a white Macbook aprox 18 months old. Yesterday I opened system prefs and there was no longer a Security button. I just changed ISP and went in to the firewall the other day, but now it isn't there. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi LilacRose;
In your profile it says your are running Tiger. If that is correct, you should post over in the Tiger forum instead of the Leopard forum.

  • Trouble getting pics from mac iphoto onto the cloud to they are viewable on the cloud or ipad, iphone itv etc.  i did try to change system pref in mac but there is no cloud there, only the old me logo, also the "ME" logo still shows on my tool bar on ipho

OK so I've recently placed some photos on iphoto that I would like to share with my other devices - ipad, iphone, apple tv.  There doesn't appear to be anywhere on the could for photos - so that is my first question.  My second question is how do I even get the photos from my mac into the cloud?  The system preferences for the mac instruct to update the cloud icon however my system is still showing the old MobileMe white cloud blue sky icon - not the current cloud.  The Mobile Me icon is inoperable.  So I've tried several times to drop ad drag, change preferences, nothing so far is working.  I've checked that I've got the latest software, running Mac OS X 10.6.8, ipad and iphone are similarly up to date.
    any help is appreciated.
    thanks
    Mike

You cannot use iCloud with 10.6.8; the minimum requirement is Lion 10.7.2 - this is a paid upgrade. The current system is Mountain Lion and if your Mac meets the requirements you can obtain it from the Mac App Store (in Applications). The requirements for Mountain Lion are listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are compliant with Lion but not Mountain Lion you may be able to get Lion by ringing the Apple Store on the number at bottom left of this page. The requirements for Lion are
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space

  • Scanning in Mavericks? I can no longer use the scanning function in my HP Officejet 4500. HP says to go through Preview, Image Capture, or Print/Scan in System Prefs. Still doesn't work. Any ideas/similar experiences?

Scanning in Mavericks? I can no longer use the scanning function in my HP Officejet 4500.
HP says to go through Preview, Image Capture, or Print/Scan in System Prefs.
Still doesn't work. Any ideas/similar experiences?

Sure it is, yet it's called HP LaserJet Professional M1210nf MFP Series *
Today, I followed your other advice, and deleted the printer, deleted the /Library/Printer/hp folder, downloaded the entire set of driver, re-installed the printer twice, once with the driver, once with Bonjour.
The Bonjour Printer has the scan option active, but it is doesn't work (refer to above.), it is called M1217nfw
The Apple Driver Printer doesn't show the scan option at all, it is called M1217nf (as on the http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#HP list.) This model number doesn't exist, as far as I can tell.
Still, everything works perfectly in Snow Leopard, for a MF printer that has been manufactured years after Snow Leopard was released.
Why going up in software version means going backwards in compatiblity for brand new product is really the question that puzzles me here.

  • Safari says not connected to internet- System Prefs does...

OK, I'm not extremely computer savvy, but I'm not totally ignorant either. But I have a network connection problem that I have absolutely no idea what's going on. I have a black MacBook Pro, and am running 10.4.11. I have an airport express at home, and never had any access/connection trouble. Where I work (a university), there is an open network we can access, but for some reason, I cannnot. My airport status indicator shows full strength, and systems prefs gives me the connection is A-OK message with the green light, saying I'm connected to this network, but when I open Safari (or Firefox), it tells me I am not connected to the internet. Another interesting thing is when I open itunes in this situation, it finds shared music libraries on the network, but it will not connect to them. This is the only network I have ever used where this is happening. Also, other people seem to be able to access this network with no trouble with Powerbook G4s. Does anyone have similar problems or any ideas at all on this one?

My guess is that you're not authenticated on the network and, for that, you should talk to the sysops there. Most universities have "open" networks that still require authentication, meaning they're open to the university users but not to everyone.

  • Cannot use System Pref's/Network -- dialog box won't go stay gone

G5 running Tiger, browsers, Mail and other internet functions (DSL, PPPoE) work fine BUT: if I boot the Network app in System Pref's, it shows a dialog box that says "Your network settings have been changed by another application." If I press OK the box goes away for a second and then returns -- there is no way to proceed, or use this app -- the only thing I can do is for Systems Pref's to quit. In other words, it won't take OK for an answer!
Some notes: 1) Network diagnostics from the Help menu says everything is normal. 2) I did move my Ethernet connection to another computer to run that one -- this Mac was off at the time. I did not change any modem or router settings, and this Mac, as I said, works fine except for the above problem. 3) an app called "Internet Connect" in the apps folder will not boot (don't know what this is); 4) the utilities Netinfo Mgr and Network Utility don't tell my anything useful or at least that I can understand. How do I reset the SystemPref's/Network app or whatever it is so I can use it? Thanks.
