System Profile= 5.5GB RAM  but Activity Viewer= 1.5GB RAM ???

I've been running 1.5GB of ram on my G5 Dual 2GHz for a couple years. I'm running 10.3.9.
I just purchased and installed 4GB of RAM from Crucial.
Why is the System Profile showing 5.5GB and the Activity Viewer still showing 1.5GB?

Does that explain why the Activity Monitor periodically (just noticed it) changes back and forth the amount of total RAM being 1.5GB and 5.5GB! Is the AM only showing the newly added RAM when the free RAM and the Inactive RAM gets too low? That would seem odd.
The AM has always shown the total RAM as 1.5GB (since I bought the computer). that is why I assumed that the AM shows the total physical RAM by the number under the pie chart. Now I see that number usually bieng 1.5GB and then briefly showing 5.5GB.

  • System Profiler see Griffin iMic, but Sound Prefs Does not

I have 3 Griffin iMics - 2 new white ones and 1 old silver one. All 3 iMics are recognised by my late-2009 iMac 27" i7 running Snow Leopard (10.6.5). However, NONE of these 3 iMics are working on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro 15" 2.8GHz also running Snow Leopard (10.6.5)!
If I plug any of these iMics into the MacBook Pro, the System Profiler lists them in the USB section, but the Sound preferences does not list them under either the Input or Output tab. When I contacted Griffin about this they suggested it was a fault with my MacBook Pro. However, if I plug-in either of 2 different model Logitech USB headsets (with boom mics), they both appear in the Input/Output tabs of the Sound preferences. So it doesn't seem correct to blame the MacBook Pro for this. But obviously something is wrong!!
Anyone got any ideas about what's wrong with the iMics and my MacBook Pro and how to fix it?

Hi mooblie, thanks for checking yes.
No, Disk Utility does NOT see the disks. And yes, I've checked the preferences in Finder, and I have ticked it so that it shows external drives.
Further, the Toshiba has "come back to life" (is now recognized), and so just the Maxtor is a problem (which was a problem which as memory serves immediately predated the blue screen/gray screen drama.)
The Maxtor is not seen on the desktop/finder on my wife's (brand new) Macbook Pro, but is seen in her system profiler as well, BTW.
So I would think it's just a problem with the drive (which sadly houses my iTunes collection), except for the brief lack of recognition of the TOshiba; and the fact that it seems my printer (also running in via USB) is only sporadically being recognized (had a few "printer is offline" when it was plugged in via USB and also to the wall (electric.))
FWIW, the TOshiba has no external power, just USB, so has to go directly to the back of the Mini, it was never recognized when I tried to hook it in via a USB hub I have ... the Maxtor (problem drive) has external (AC) power, and that is all hooked up.
WHile trying to fix the blue screen, I followed various fixes including unplugging everything and holding down the Power button, starting up while holding "shift", holding "c", etc., etc. ...
    Any further insight greatly appreciated!!!

  • Roland UM-ONE  CD-ROM does not mount on iMac OS 10.8.2 Roland driver for 10.8 installed as directed. No power ready light shows when connecting UM-ONE. System Profiler shows it, but not configured. Older UM-1X works fine. UM-ONE works on Dell Windows XP.

    UM-ONE
Roland supplied CD-ROM does not mount or read by iMac OS 10.8.2, works with old TiBook and Dell laptop, however.
Got latest driver from RolandUS.com (um_1mx8d_v100), installed as directed.
No power ready light shows when connecting UM-ONE.
System Profile shows it there, but not configured.
With Audio MIDI Setup opened to MIDI Studio window, UM-ONE does not appear.
Tried many things without success. Tried swapping UM-1X (formerly on Dell laptop) with UM-ONE. UM-ONE installed and worked there without any issues. MIDI instrument communicates fine.
The UM-1X works without complaint and as expected when connected to any USB port on either the Dell or iMac, even a hub or keyboard port, just as it formerly had before changing operating systems, etc. It is old, but reliable.
Upshot is, for now, that UM-1X works with either the Dell or the iMac, but is currently attached to the iMac. UM-ONE (2011 model) only works with the Dell (Windows XP).

Same problem here! The only difference is that I'm using a MacBook pro 13 inch (2011)

    Thanks.

  • Windows XP CS4 Upgrade Install hangs at Checking System Profile...

Problem: When installing from DVDs, the "Checking System Profile..." progress bar makes it to 90%, then hangs, causing you to abort using Task Manager. Changing startup and services settings, or disabling antivirus software doesn't help.
Here's what got me past the hang.
My guess is that it's a DVD player issue. These install disks thrash like crazy during installation. I did this:
    1. Copy the "Application 1" disc contents to a folder on your hard drive then run setup.exe from the folder the same as you would from the DVD (see Adobe install instructions).
    2. The "Checking System Profile..." progress bar completes and gets you to the serial number entry page.
    3. Enter your serial number and let Disc 1 install from your hard drive.
    4. When the installer asks for Disc 2 in the c:\ drive (which can't be done), cancel the installation. You'll get some troubleshooting information and links that you may find interesting. Exit the installer.
    5. NOW try to install Disc 1 from your DVD drive. Again you get "Checking System Profile...", but since you've already entered your serial number, you get the install window for installing or reinstalling CS4 components. Check the programs that you want to install, then proceed. It's working for me so far.
    Good luck,
    J.

Repy to Jeff K (number 1 topic see top of page):
Your method worked for me THANK YOU FOR POSTING YOU ARE A GODSEND!
This is what I did to make it work:
    1) Copied contents from App1 & App2 DVD's. (can take a while, good time to get a cuppa coffee!)
    2) Pasted them into separate folders on my hard drive (named them Adobe CS4 App1 & Adobe CS4 App2
    3) Ran the App1 setup.exe program from the Hard drive and in a few minutes the serial number page appeared (which didn't appear in the many attempts I have done this weekend so I knew this was working well)
    4) Setup goes through the process as you would expect.
    FYI:
    - The virus & firewall did not affect the installation
    - I did use the cs4cleaner but only found 'Adobe Setup' that was linked to anything on my system
    - I did all other 'Adobe support suggested' work arounds, but none worked for me
    - Jeffs suggestion of copying files to Hard drive is the only one that has worked
    - Some suggestions say to remove flash player...don't bother because it's required for other programs and it gets upgraded with the install anyway so no need to uninstall. it caused problems for my HP Officejet 8500 all in one when i did uninstall it...save yourself the extra issues.
    - Dual monitors and graphics cards aren't the issue so don't change any settings there, i have dual monitors didn't create the issue for me.
I'm running XP SP3 on PC with a fresh install of CS4 (not an upgrade).
    hope this helps

  • New RAM installed but System Profiler still seeing old RAM

    Hi
Recently put in a new hard drive after the last one failed. The new RAM, equaling 3GB, was installed on my iMac C2D 24" BEFORE the failure. I got it back from the shop today and checked to see if the RAM was still recognised. The System Profiler is showing 1GB or RAM, 512 in each slot, and the serial numbers match the RAM that came with the computer originally.
I'm running Snow Leopard and haven't noticed anything running slow. Is this just a glitch in the matrix?

So you are saying the original DIMMs are there plus the ones you added, all were recognized before the repair but only the Apple-supplied after the repair.
Just trying to keep all of this straight in my mind.
In that case, you might try removing the DIMMs you installed and reinstalling, one at a time and see if they are recognized. If they are not, then they may have gone bad for some reason, who knows why, and it is time to look at the warranty you have from the people from whom you purchased the DIMMs.
If it was someone like Crucial or OWC (macsales) they are really good about their lifetime warranty.
If the warranty is lifetime, contact the supplier and see what the process is for replacement.
It is strange that both would work, and then fail. But stranger things have happened with computers.

  • RAM remaining active when not in use and grinding system to hault

    Hello there!
The to point, my RAM appears to be acting very strangely and would be very grateful for any explanation/workaround/solution.
I regularly use the RAM intensive application After Effects CS5. I have 16GB (8x2 GB matching pairs) of RAM which has worked fine for the past year or so until now. I usually tell After Effects not to render one frame at a time (no absurd multiprocessing requests) and to leave 6GB of ram free for other applications in its memory preferences. This used to stop AE from gobbling up too much RAM and slowing down the entire system. However, all of a sudden AE has started to disregard its memory settings and proceeds to use all of the available RAM until none is left. I then see my renders grind to a hault and the entire system move the speed of a snail as little to no free RAM remains.
What is worse is that after I stop the render and quit After Effects, 8GB or so of ram remains active acccording to Activity Monitor, even though nothing is using it. I need to restart in order to get back to normal.
I have tried all of the standard AE fixes, erasing preferences, cleaning caches, changing render settings, etc. I have also done all of the standard OS clean outs with Onxy, Disk Utility, etc. Nothing works.
Below is a screen shot of my idle system with nothing open. The numbers do not add up!
Below is a screenshot of what happens about 5 minutes into any render in AE, completely full RAM with with the Swap increasing with every pass.
I realize that this is quite a specific question I should point at Adobe but I'm thinking it might be more of an OS issue as it has happened so suddenly for no apparent reason. No new type of render, no settings or updates applied lately, just completely out of the blue. Help much appreciated!
I am running an Early 2008 8 Core Mac Pro, 8 GB of good ram in matching 2GB pairs. 4 fast internal drives. Mac OS 10.6.7

The numbers don't add up as 6GB is shown as active in the pie chart while the amount of ram used by the processes list barely reaches 1GB. So what is using the remaining 5GB of active memory?
I would not mind this so much if it was being used by some unseen system resource, and was made free if needed by other apps, but that is the problem. When I load more apps from this state the ram does not clear out and I see the computer struggling and writing page outs/ins even when the amount of ram being used in the list of prcesses is well below 16GB. The mystery process seems to remain active and does not release the ram.
Hatter - I have gone through MANY threads about Adobe not releasing memory. I have been using AE for years and never and very aquainted with the best settings to use for rendering in accordance with available ram, processors, and fast drives. Many of them complain about inactive memory not being released and Apple's memory management. This is more of an oddity as until now everything has been fine. I am doing a render of the sort I have done hundreds of times in the past with this system.
My problem is that this started happening all of a sudden for no apparent reason. AE allows one to control how much ram it uses and how much is left for other applications. I keep this at the Adobe forum suggested 6GB, and until a few days ago it would leave 6GB free. The render would progress smoothly, no need for page outs, no maxing of the ram. A simple render.
Now the same simple renders max out all of the RAM despite my telling AE not to use it all. Changing the memory use settings seems to make no difference no difference at all and I gradually see the ram fill out to maximum and then the page in/outs go through the roof, the render taking 4-5 times as long as previous.
So a bit stuck here! Do yall think I'll need to re-install my system to fix this or perhaps it might be more of a hardware problem? I am hesitant to wipe and re-install from a backup image so if any other possibly solutions come to mind please let me know...Possibly a hardware problem? =/
    Thanks for yout time!

  • New RAM doesn't show on System Profiler

Hi, I just installed additional 1 Gb of RAM in my Mac Pro but the new RAM doesn't show on System Profiler whether I have it inserted on Riser A or B but everything is working fine. What gives?
By the way, my Mac Pro has 2 x 512Mb RAM pre-installed on Riser A and I didn't buy the new RAM from Apple. Thanks for the help.

    Hi Kappy,
I don't think the 1Gb RAM I bought is faulty cos:
    1. It shows on System Profiler when installed on Riser A DIMM 1 (without original 2 x 512Mb RAM)
    2. It shows on System Profiler when installed on Riser A DIMM 1 with 2 x 512Mb on DIMM 3 & 4
The funny thing is in scenario 2, System Profiler shows that I have a total of 1.5Gb. 1Gb on Riser A DIMM 1 and 512Mb on DIMM 3 appear but not the other 512Mb on DIMM 4. Why???
I'm beginning to think that I should have bought 2 x 512Mbs instead of one 1Gb. So I'm getting 1.5Gb of RAM instead of 2Gb!
Do you think if I purchase another one 1Gb RAM and have them installed in sequence (1Gb DIMM 1, 1Gb DIMM 2, 512Mb DIMM 3, 512 DIMM 4), I would then have 3Gb installed?
Thanks for your help once again.

  • System PRofiler and ECC RAM

    All,
Does the System Profiler indicate when RAM is ECC memory? Does it indicate when it's not?
    How does it indicate this?
The Apple documentation recommends against mixing ECC and Non-ECC memory, but the System Profiler doesn't seem to indicate the difference.
    Thanks.

Yes it does indicate either. Until recently, I was running mixed, now I got ECC only, below is how it is shown. How non-ECC RAM shows you already know I believe.

I've been seeing messages exactly like that (and many, many other kinds) in the Console since the first version of OS X.  They look menacing but are harmless.
You don't need any kind of security software.
Just surf the web carefully, pay attention to where you're going and don't install anything that you don't recognize.  If you are asked to enter an admin user name and password, DON'T.  Unless you know for sure that you initiated the installation from a known and reliable source (like Apple).
Mac malware relies on social engineering.  No amount of security/anti-virus, blah, blah, blah software is going to help.

  • Upgrading RAM cards not showing up in system profiler... is this normal?

Just replaced both 1GB RAM cards in my macbook pro with two 2GB RAM cards, but when I go into "about my mac" it is still saying that I only have 2GB of memory, and when I go into system profiler and click "memory" it is still showing/giving details on two 1GB cards, is this normal or did I not install the new RAM cards properly? I assumed it would update the info to show the additional memory?

    This is not normal
Open up the Mac and reseat the RAM modules. This may help.
If this doesn't resolve the issue, return the modules to the supplier and get the proper modules.
    Best.

  • Firewire Drive in System Profiler But Not In Finder?

I have a 2.3 MBP with a Seagate FreeAgent 1 TB drive attached via FW 400.
Just yesterday, it wont show up in the finder, but does in Apple System Profiler. This drive is full of iMovie Events I'd hate to lose.
Is there a way using Unix to try to mount it? Any suggestions will be welcomed.
    Tom

After unplugging power and firewire from the device try refreshing System Profiler. Refresh in System Profiler can be found under View OR Command R will do it. I use this all the time when I loose either USB or Firewire Connections and nothing else, such as unplugging, doesn't work.

  • Macbook (White 2010) works with 5GB of RAM but not 8GB

I bought 2 x 4gb modules the other day. I tried to install them both on my macbook which although supposedly supports 4 gb of ram but others have proven it will support up to 8gb. I installed them then booted up my Mac but it would not start it merely kept beeping.
However when i used one of the modules with one of the previous modules i.e 5gb in total, my computer turned on and is working. Why don't both of the modules work together? How come I am unable to get 8gb of RAM but I am able to get 5gb? Both modules work when i use them with a 1gb module, but they don't work together. Any Advice?

Yeah the 4gb is being recognised, my mac is running off the 5 gb in total. True, but i've seen videos where people have the exact same mac as me and have 8gb RAM. But yeah thanks for your help guys

    Hi,
I have a Problem with my iPod. It works perfectly when I connect it to other macs.
Though on my mac it appears only in the system profiler, but not in itunes, /dev or diskutilities. Other USB devices are working correctly.
I already reseted my ipod but this doesn't solve the problem. Neither did the update of the iPod firmware.
Does somebody know this Problem? What can I try to solve it?

I'm pretty upset. It seems that the only solution to this problem is to buy some new mac products!
I have Applications on my computer that will not work on a new system and I don't want to update my system + all expensive apps just because my ipod refuse to downgrade.
I used to be a mac fan and I still like it, but this kind of "tricks" are unacceptable. I bought an ipod because I didn't want to spend time on fixing some stupid problems and now I already spent weeks trying to make my expensive ipod work on my mac (and all this because of a stupid firmware problem). I am now really disapointed.
So if anyone should have an idea on if it's possible to downgrade my ipod (or other solution?) in order to make it work again with my system, please post it here. Thanks.
