Hi,
taken from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
"Safe Mode in Mac OS X 10.5 or later also disables Quartz Extreme (hardware accelerated graphics). Applications that depend on Quartz Extreme will not open, and the Mac OS X menu bar will appear solid even if "Translucent Menu Bar" is enabled in Desktop & Screen Saver preferences."

Does the new MacBook have Quartz Extreme? I don't see anything specific in the specs or prose, and a recent Tech Note said that you have to have QE in order to use iMovie HD. The article listed supported graphics cards, and did NOT mention the Intel "integrated" adapter.

  • MacBook Unibody Fan extremely noisy

I made a topic on here last year sometime about my macbook (bought in November '08) overheating. I took it back to the shop and after a lot of persuasion (because it wasn't overheating at all when the shop i bought it from kept it for a week) I got a new fan fitted by Apple. Now my fan is getting really noisy again. It's not overheating or anything, it's working perfectly fine apart from the noise. I've updated all my firmware and that hasn't helped at all. When I start it up it's just a quiet noise but when I move it or try to watch videos on youtube it gets really noisy. I thought that it might be that the fan was unbalanced but I'm not sure. I recorded the sound of the fan with my mic on the macbook so you can hear how loud it is.
http://tinypic.com/r/16c4daf/6 - This is the "quiet" sound
http://tinypic.com/r/33y40gy/6 - This is the extremely noisy sound
My warranty expired in November but I got the fan replace about a month before that. Do you think the fan would be under warranty by Apple because it's a new one or is it not because the warranty of the macbook has expired?
Has this happened to anybody else? If so, how did you solve the problem?
Should I take it back to Apple and see what they could do?

"Should I take it back to Apple and see what they could do?"
    Sure.

  • Quartz Extreme not supported after 10.4.7 update

I recently updated to 10.4.7 and now quartz extreme is not supported.
How can I resolve this problem?
Mac Mini 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   512 Mb RAM

    Hi Dr. Smoke.
Many thanks for offering some advice so quickly.
    1. The reason I believe Quartz Extreme is " not supported" is mainly because when i turn my mac on and start using OS X, if I am in say DVD player or might use a widget the screen is very "choppy". Not sure if this is clear, but the motion is choppy. When I checked my system profiler it showed:
    ATI Radeon 9200:
    Chipset Model: ATY,RV280
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    VRAM (Total): 32 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x5962
    Revision ID: 0x0001
    ROM Revision: 113-xxxxx-120

    GDM-400PS: (Sony trinitron)
    Resolution: 1024 x 768 @ 75 Hz
    Depth: 16-bit Color
    Core Image: Not Supported
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Not Supported
    Rotation: Supported
Now, I just recently I decided to change my resolution and checked back with the system profiler and it said Quartz Extreme was supported. Core Image still says "Not supported".
Unless I manually change the res. everytime I use my mac it still keeps saying Quartz Extreme is not supported.
Can you tell me what is happening and is it fixable?
    many thanks!

  • 10.4.4 broke Quartz Extreme

Hopefully an easy question for somebody here:
I installed the full suite of new Software Update fixes last night (10.4.4, Quicktime, iTunes, etc.) and it appeared to run and restart without a hitch. However, an hour later when I launched Soundtrack Pro 1.02 -- my most important app -- it failed with the following error:
    Configuration Error:
This software requires certain hardware or software which is missing.
    * Quartz Extreme Support.
It ran fine earlier in the day, before the update. At first I thought this was a Soundtrack Pro problem, but a few other signs on my Mini indicate that maybe there is a problem with Quartz Extreme now. E.g., the Electric Sheep screensaver is slow and jerky, where previously it was smooth.
Can anyone give me some guidance on where to look to see if any configuration settings might be broken, or how to reset them? Thanks in advance.
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I appear to be in the same boat as you. My MDD has a Radeon 9000 Pro which has been Quartz Extreme capable since the day I purchased the machine.
After the 10.4.4 update I can no longer launch DVD Player (it says "A valid video device could not be found for playback. [-70017]"), Exposé is choppy, and video files in Quicktime Player take tons of CPU usage and yet play choppy.
System Profiler now says that Quartz Extreme is "Not Supported". What happened?

  • Quartz Extreme

Does the MacBook support Quartz Extreme?

Yes, apparantly it'll install on these and mac mini's, but it's not "supported" meaning don't b*tch at apple if it runs poorly. You need to negate the motion 2 installer and then it'll run. Here's a thread with more details about the exact question:

  • Final Cut - Missing AGP graphics card in my MacBook which is Quartz Extreme

    Successful Install of Leopard.
I have Final Cut Express HD 3.0, my MacBook is supposedly Quartz Extreme Supported (System Profiler agrees with that). On attempted start of Final Cut, I get the following error message.

Any ideas or did I find a true Apple Bug with their own hardware and software?

Yes Final Cut Express HD 3.0 did work for 10.4.10 and was installed when I got MacBook by Apple.

  • FCE won't open on my new MacBook Pro - says I need a Quartz Extreme Card

I just bought a new MacBook Pro Laptop, and since I was having lots of hardware and software related problems with my old one, I clean installed everything rather than transferring things through archive.
Anyhow, I was initially able to register and install FCE from the original disk and then downloaded and installed all available upgrades. I opened it up, tried "Log and Transfer" to upload some video I'd shot on my Canon Vixia HFS10, and it worked fine. I saved and closed, but now, next morning when I tried to open FCE to edit my video it wouldn't open. A "Minimum System Check" came up that said "This system does not meet the following minimum requirements: Final Cut Express requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme Capable Video Card." I'm pretty sure that my NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT cards meet the requirements and that Final Cut Express just doesn't recognize that they are much better than the minimum requirements it is programmed to look for. How can I fix this? I saw another thread on a similar topic suggesting that someone delete their FCE, and then perform a clean install, but that's effectively what I've just gone through, and I'm not in the mood to spend a couple of hours seeing if the same thing I just did fixes the problem I have now. This seems like something that would be an easy programming fix, probably a simple modification to a preferences file, but I wonder if anyone out there has the solution?

No, I have FCE 4 - should have said that - and it worked on my older Intel based MacBook Pro.
As it turns out, though, I think I've solved the problem, adapting a solution to a related problem I found on MacRumors.com. Don't know why this is necessary, but here's the solution I tried:
    1. right click on the FCE application icon and select "Show Package Contents"
    2. open the "Contents" folder and then open the "info.plist" folder in Text Edit
    3. find the line that says: "<key>AELMinimumQuartzExtremeCapable</key>," and replace it with "<key>AELMinimumGeForceCapable</key>", and then make sure that the next line says "<string></string>" without any number specified. Or, if you have some other kind of graphics card that you know is compatible, you could say what that is instead of GeForce. I found it doesn't work just to delete this line completely.
Again, I don't know why Apple didn't build in this flexibility when they updated their standard Graphics cards, but in any case this solution seems to work.

  • FinalCut 703 doesn't start - missing a "quartz extreme system"

I run Final Cut Pro 7.0.3 under OSX 10.7.5 on a MAcbook Pro 17"
all of a sudden I get an error when starting FCP. An Error Box telling me I need a quartz extreme compatible system apperas and allows me only to quit FCP.
I haven't done any changes to the display settings recently and I don't know where it comes from.
A reboot solves the problem, after this FCP starts as usual...
any ideas what is going wrong ? could it be a hardware issue ??
    thx Jo

That message has been around for a least since FCP 5. It happens sometimes.

On my Macbook pro 15, 2011, System Profiler is suggesting that it uses SATA III for the hard drive and SATA II for the Optical Drive.  Is that true?

That is correct. The tech specs indicate:
    Hard Drive Interface
    6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)
    Optical Drive Interface
3.0 or 6.0 Gbps Serial ATA (SATA)

I have both a MacBook Pro and macair but the pro won't let me in I think it something to do with hard disc or permissions as it says system profiler in utilities , if anyone could help I'd be very grateful

Restart the MBP and immediately hold the option key down. Release the key when you see the Apple logo. The computer will boot and show you a screen with two hard drive icons.
    Select Recovery and hit Return.
On the new screen, select Disk Utility and hit Return.
    In DU do this:
In the list at the left, select the name of your hard drive. (Be sure to select the name that’s indented to the right in the list, not an item at the far left.)
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
When that is done, click Repair Permissions. Be patient!
When that is done, quit DU and restart in the usual way.

  • "Motion requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme capable video card"

Today, I opened Motion after 3 weeks away from my computer. In mid-December, it worked fine. Today, Motion would not start, instead popping up a dialog box saying "Motion requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme capable video card."
Hmm. Nothing changed except maybe a Software Update over the past 3 weeks. After a few panicky minutes, I realized it was worth restarting the machine, and that fixed it.
Why did it happen? Probably because, before I left for a holiday, I unplugged my Cinema LED monitors (to save energy costs). When I returned to the machine today, plugged in their power cables and started working.
Somehow, Motion was triggered to protest that I didn't have the right display hardware, but, thankfully, a restart fixed the problem.

    Thanks for sharing...

  • MacBook Pro appears as PowerMac in system profiler

My MacBook Pro 2.16 shows as a PowerMac under the system profiler, Model Identifier.
Any thoughts? Did I migrate something important and screw my new shiney MBP? Of course, I 'd like to to show the Model that it really is...and thats a MacBook Pro.
Any guidance would be really appreciated!
    Cheers,

    That's very weird !
    1. Try resetting Parameter RAM (hold down apple/option/p/r keys at boot and release after three 'chimes'
    2. Try Booting from Install DVD1 and see what System Profiler shows
    3. Worst case do an Archive re-install of OSX
