System Profiler Software "Kind" is blank???

I'm trying to weed out the PowerPC applications on my MacBook Pro before I install Lion.  I've found all of the PowerPC "Kinds" but there are some applications with NOTHING in the "Kind" column.  What are these?  Thanks.

More than likely, Xcode Tools apps or AppleScript items. Click on them and you'll be shown where they live.

  • No Serial No in System Profiler

Last year we had a new midplane and power unit installed for the iMac and affter doing that, there was no serial number listed in the System Profiler, it's just blank.
Is there a way to update the machine to the new serial number?

    741/3187
    Hi Stephanie,
There is a way to change the serial number in the About this Mac window, by editing this file:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/AboutThisMac.strings
(I don't know about opening it with Xcode or TextEdit, but it works with Property List Editor).
    - in ABOUTBOX_SERIAL_NUMBER_FORMATSTRING, replace the value "Serial Number %@" with your "Serial Number XXXXXXXXXXX".
You'll have to enable root first, and most probably change the ownership & permissions. Don't forget to then disable root and repair Permissions.
IMO it is not worth the hassle, because as the others say, the one really important info is the one saved at Apple Support, along with your proofs of purchase, bills and dates.
    Also because:
The really important place where you need it (System Profiler, along with the Sales Order Number), can be updated only using a special Apple "Set Serial Number" bootable CD.
    Have fun with the file-editing...
or just forget about it if your Support page at Apple is OK

  • Why are applications not listed in System Profiler?

    Hi Apple Support Community,
System Profiler -> Software -> Applications displays "No information found." instead of the expected list of 64bit / 32bit applications installed.  What could cause this and how can I get System Profiler to rescan the applications installed?
    Thank you,
    System Version:          Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
    Kernel Version:          Darwin 10.8.0
    64-bit Kernel and Extensions:          Yes

Discussion thread http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11077939 suggests Applications are not displayed in System Profiler because I purposefully disabled Spotlight for performance reasons and the indexing of external drives.

  • I thought I deleted downloaded BlackBerry software, but it remained even after I did a system restore. I manually deleted it from the Apps folder, but it's still in System Profiler under Apps. How do I delete this from System Profiler?

Right now, it seems as if it is still showing in System Profiler, then the unnecessary BlackBerry software I downloaded from the internet is still using memory, right? How do I permanently delete it?

In addition to what Drew wrote, remember the Mac has a data fork and a resource fork.
Here is an old thread but a nice recap by Dr. Smoke
    ._Files
Note that the ._file files you note are the resource forks of Mac files you copied to the drive from your Mac, and these are only visible when you use the Flash drive on a PC. These are normal and indicate the Flash drive is already formatted for Windows.
When you copy or save a file from a Mac OS X system to a Windows shared volume or a Windows-formatted disk, the Mac creates two files: the data fork (xxx) and the resource fork (._xxx). This is called Apple Double Format and is normal. The resource fork contains additional data about the file that is exclusive to the Mac that cannot be saved otherwise on Windows-formatted disks. This is new with Mac OS X, as documented in Mac OS X: Apple Double Format Creates File Name With the Prefix '._'.
The resource fork files (._xxx) are necessary if you want to copy the file back to the Mac and retain the metadata. The resource forks of files are invisible when they are used on the Mac: the Mac OS Extended file system (aka HFS Plus or HFS+) uses forked files, with a file having both data and resource forks.
You can delete the resource forks on the Windows disk if and only if you don't care about losing the resource fork information should you copy them back to the Mac, such as comments, image preview icon, etc. Some Mac applications use the resource fork data, so deleting the resource fork can be problematic if you copy the file back to the Mac. Likewise moving the file while not also moving its associated resource fork when using the data on a PC can result in problems when using some files again on the Mac.
You can't prevent the resource forks from being created if you copy or save files from the Mac to the Windows share or Windows-formatted disk via Finder.

  • I'm dying to upgrade to Lion.  But I know some appls will no longer work.  I just switched from Quicken to iBank.  How can I find out what else I'm going to use?  Is there a way on system profile?  A specific 'kind' of application?

Is there a way, in profiler? maybe to find out which programs I'll lose when i upgrade?  I've already switched from Quicken to iBank.  But I'd like to know in advance i I'm going to lose anything else important!

Browse to the Mac page at http://roaringapps.com/. There you'll find hundreds (thousands?) of Mac applications listed with indications as to Lion compatibility.
Surely, there's more to Lion compatibility than merely whether the app is "Intel" or "Universal", as opposed to "PowerPC" (as shown under Software > Applications in System Profiler).
It's a bit surprising that nobody seems to have done an app that scans your system then looks up Lion compatibility at roaringapps.

I've been seeing messages exactly like that (and many, many other kinds) in the Console since the first version of OS X.  They look menacing but are harmless.
You don't need any kind of security software.
Just surf the web carefully, pay attention to where you're going and don't install anything that you don't recognize.  If you are asked to enter an admin user name and password, DON'T.  Unless you know for sure that you initiated the installation from a known and reliable source (like Apple).
Mac malware relies on social engineering.  No amount of security/anti-virus, blah, blah, blah software is going to help.

  • USB doesn't recognized by System Profiler

    Hello,
I'm a MacOSX newbie and I'm trying to discover an error.
I've got a problem with USB Controller device(i think the problem is in EFI partition) because when I insert different USB flash disks, no one appears in System Profiler. I'm using MacOSX 10.5.8, and a Macbook Air (adquired at August, 2009-MacBookAir2,1).
    I'm gonna put some info:
    System profiler don't recognizes anything:

Obviously, when I do diskutil list, it didn't appear.

    EFI System 46 409645 409600 [EFI]
Before the problem, I did some things:
    - I installed rEFTit
    - I investigate how to boot from HD a Ubuntu LiveCD. I successfully boot from one partition created with Disk Utility but ubiquity has a bug error and can't umount /cdrom when it is going to change the partition table. I don't think Linux changed my partition table at all, neither GPT either EFI partition. But I don't know how to probe it.
    - I had done a boot from pendrive with a really extrage crash that advertises Macintosh doesn't well prepared for USB flash booting from rEFIt.
    - Something I found that I think isn't normal is a second option that appears with rEFIt when I only have a HFS+ partition and an EFI partition. Seems like the GPT/EFI partition didn't well update when I changed my partitions (and no USB HD device was input).
    Notes:
    - My USB device/controller/software was fine until (I think) booted from a FAT partition with an Ubuntu ISO image and I tried to install it(hipotesis).
    - Once I had an extrange problem when I disconnected an USB HD and I couldn't mount any more until I halted the system.
    - I tried with the IOUSBFamily kext for 10.5.8(349.4.3), but nothing changes.
    - I tried reinstall rEFIT.
    - I tried updating Partition table.
    - I can't backup my data with no USB, I don't wanna format (if possible) my HD and I want to discover the problem.
    - My USB HDs function in other PCs.
    - Map Partition Scheme: GUID Partition table.
    - My knowledge on this subject are scarce
I think the problem is EFI partition but I want to confirm previously before trying to recover this partition.
    Thanks for the patience,
    Alejandro.
(Sorry about my english, if you don't understand anything, please tell me)

I am having exactly the same problem. I have a LaCie 750GB HD that I've been using to store files too large for my internal HD and suddenly it won't mount to my computer (when it plug it it I get a message that says "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." And when I tried to fix it using disk utility it said my only option was to backup my HD and reformat, but I can't access the files on the HD to back them up and I would rather not lose everything. Any ideas?

  • System Profiler shows no boot volume

I have a G4 imac and I'm trying to upgrade to Tiger. It meets all the reqs and the disc is the retail full version installer. The installer freezes at the select destination screen. It shows the harddrive but it is faded out and I get the spinny thing. In the System Profiler the boot volume under Software Overview is blank.
First question is: That shouldn't be blank correct?
Second question is: Why is it blank?
Third question is: What do I do about that?

This is the discussion area for the iMac G3 CRT.

  • System Profiler Crash

    Hi All!
Trying to check my applications for compatibility in preparation for a Lion upgrade, I attempted to use System Profiler to list all my applications by kind -- i.e., intel native, PowerPC, etc.
But, when I click on "Applications" under "Software" in System Profiler, it crashes. Reliably crashes, even after a reboot.
Anyone else experience this or have thoughts about what might be the cause? I've never had System Profiler crash before.
    Thanks,
    Greg

  • Safari 4 reports version 3.0.4 wrong version in System Profiler

I am running Safari "Version 4.0 (4530.17)" as indicated by the "About Safari" dialog. However, the System Profiler under Software>Applications says the following:
    Safari:
    Version: 3.0.4
    Last Modified: 6/24/09 9:54 AM
    Kind: Universal
Get Info String: 4.0, Copyright © 2003-2009 Apple Inc.
    Location: /Applications/Safari.app
This issue has been for all Safari 4.x versions released so-far. This is a problem since we use data from the system profiler to track what versions of software we have installed to make sure that everybody in our office is up-to-date. With Safari claiming to be version 3.0.4 after every update, it does not tell us anything.
    I am wondering if:
    a) Is this a known issue and Apple is already taking care of it for the next release?
    b) Does anybody know some work-around to find the real version of a given application on a particular system - a solution that can be automated?
Thank you in advance for any help.

    HI,
The System Profiler should always have the software versions up to date.
    Try deleting this file. com.apple.systemprofiler.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac. Open the System Profiler and see if your Safari version is updated.
And try repairing disk permissions. Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
One more thing you can do. With the System Profiler open, click Applications/Safari. Then from the Menu Bar, click File/Send to Apple.

  • System Profiler Report Shows PowerPC apps installed - what to do with them?

I just purchased a new iMac and successfully installed brand new shrink wrapped software: Adobe CS3 Design Standard and Microsoft Office:mac 2008. Additionally, I ran Adobe Updater and Microsoft AutoUpdate to ensure I had all of the latest updates - each ran successfully and all applications were successfully updated to the latest versions.
Following the software installation I ran System Profiler to audit all the applications that were installed and I noticed all applications installed with these packages were Universal with the exception of nine applications which are listed as PowerPC apps:
    * six apps installed with Adobe Illustrator and
    * three apps with Microsoft Office:mac 2008; MSML Server was loaded in two different locations?!
I am concerned that I may have problems if I happen to run any of these PowerPC apps on the Intel iMac or just the fact that they are even present on the computer and may cause problems.
Can someone offer advise if I should delete these PowerPC apps from my new Intel iMac or what I should do with them?
    Thanks for your help,
    John

The Adobe items are all AppleScripts which have been compiled as applications. AppleScripts are not compiled as universal apps.
Microsoft Messenger is a universal app. It's possible the server apps are not given they are dated 2005.

  • IPod not recognized by iTunes & Disk Utility - Recognized by System Profile

I have a 40GB iPod Clickwheel (4th Gen?) that i'm trying to fix back to life since my mini was just stolen and i'm out on the road on tour all the time. my iPod actually powers up by itself just fine, the battery life is just peachy, and it can run independently without songs (i'm able to look around just as though i had songs on there - i can play games, alter settings, etc etc.).
    However, there's a few things i've noticed!
When i go to the iPod's about menu (when disconnected from the computer), it shows there's no songs, that there's 0 capacity, 0 available - shows that the version is 3.1.1, the serial and model numbers, but the format is unknown.
I've tried plugging the dang thing into my computer to much avail - IF iTunes recognizes it, it says it needs to be restored -- GREAT! so i try to restore the iPod, however, i almost instantly get an error: The iPod cannot be restored because it is currently busy. When i clicked the help tag, it says it's a common problem in iTunes 7.0 - great, i have 8.0.2; and i've tried running everything from a restart on the ipod to a restart on the computer, updating all my system files, running the iPod in disk mode, etc, but nothing seems to make it want to restore.
when i look in system profiler; it shows that the iPod is hooked up to my USB port (which is just fine, and i've never had problems running a click-wheel iPod through that before); however both Disk Utility and iTunes do not acknowledge it's existence. what gives?
is my iPod a goner? how would i go about restoring this so i can use it? I've tried it on my Power PC (Specs below) as well as trying it on an iBook and iMac; with the same results every time. i know it's not the cable, because the iPod actually charged via that cable last night!
    any help!?

If you can get it to show up in Disk Utility, try reformatting (erasing) it in Disk Utility. If that process completes without stalling or errors, quit Disk Utility and run iTunes. Immediately attempt to do another Restore to install the iPod's software and initialize.
If the iPod does not erase successfully (it should take less than one minute for a standard erase) in Disk Utility, the iPod's hard drive may be faulty.

  • Unable to open SYSTEM PROFILER

    Hi all,
I updated my software to 10.5.8.
Since then i'm unable to open system profiler.
    Tried using the:
    a) option button > then click system profiler
    b) spotlight
    c) apple logo > abt this mac>
    Please help.
    Many thanks in advance

    HI,
    Try deleting this file.
    com.apple.systemprofiler.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences.
Move that file to the Trash then try to launch the System Profiler.
If that doesn't work you could perform an Archive & Install which would reinstall a new copy of the Mac OS X for you which would install the System Profiler app.
As with any installation, make sure and back up all important data first.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545
    Then repair disk permissions...

  • IPhone 3G won't show up in iTunes but does in System Profiler

So early today, when I was clicking check for updates every half hour like everyone else waiting for 3.0 to go live I had this crop up. I had quit iTunes, unplugged the iPhone (2.2.1) and when I plugged it in.. nothing.. didn't even get the chirp from the iPhone showing it was charging, it won't auto-launch iTunes and if Itunes is open it won't chow up.
    - Tried a original iPhone cord and same thing,
    - used a Apple wall charger and the phone chirped and showed it was charging
    - restarted the Mac Pro and the iPhone, still nothing
    - took the original cord and phone (still v2.2.1) to a iMac in another room and it worked perfectly.
    - used the iMac to update to iPhone 3.0 software
    - went back to the Mac Pro and it charges now, shows up in System Profiler, nothing else
Latest version of all the software, including 2.2.1 (and then 3.0) on the iPhone. All the updates on the Mac Pro.
Hints short of nuking my iTunes completely (and all my rankings, etc in my music)?

Oh, one more thing, I have reset PRAM if that matters.
