System Re-install question

Does anyone know if I re-install my system if it will delete all hidden files? or re-write over them?

It's possible that the external drive is now mounting on the wrong path because a "ghost" folder of the same name was created in the /Volumes directory of your startup drive when the external drive went offline. If this happened, then the system might now be unable to mount the real external drive without changing the name of the mount point, usually by adding a number. This would change the path to your files, and any pointers to their previous paths would now be wrong.
Using Finder, navigate to one of the graphic files on your external drive, right-click it and Get Info, and look at General>Where at the top. If the name of your external volume is, say, "Graphics", the path you see should begin with:
/Volumes/Graphics/..
Does the volume name instead have an added number, something like:
/Volumes/Graphics 1 /...
If so, then you probably do have a "ghost folder' in /Volumes.
I would take a look there in any event. /Volumes is a hidden folder, but it is easy to peek into it. First *eject and then disconnect all external drives*, then:
Finder>Go menu> Go to Folder
enter /Volumes and click Go
/Volumes should contain what looks like an alias to the startup volume. Don't touch that, or any other alias. Do you also see a folder which is not an alias, with a name similar to your (currently disconnected) external drive? If so, look inside it to be sure it does not contain any of your actual graphics files. If it doesn't, trash the folder, but for safety, don't empty the Trash yet. Reboot, and then reconnect your external drive.

your new system runs 10.6.8 just fine as has been said and stated many times.
I would clone it first.
I would even clone the original system it has.
And if you have or want to use Lion and then Mountain Lion, fine - I would still keep backups of every OS.
I am not a fan of putting the OS and Apps plus all the data all on one drive. I like to keep them separate.
Whatever OS, rerun the last combo update is all and any other updates.
And by "new Lion" I assume you don't mean 10.7 but "Moutain" 10.8. Part of me says keep Lion and SL around, and test and try out ML with your apps and other hardware you may have. After too many years, waiting for 10.8.1 - and give everyone time to update their apps and retest.

I recently purchased an ASUS Transformer book notebook/tablet. It came with Win 8.1 installed so no installation disc.
All windows app unable to open and flash and back to startmenu
Then i tried

It able to access Win Store
but I cannot download anything due to error 0x80070002.
Also, i fix three other system apps such as PC Settings, run the following:

Any powershell command that can locate music, video, travel and fix all others win apps
Finally, i used AppsDiagnostic.diagcab to scan, it occurs
some other safety setting lost and changed and windows metro setting may be destroyed
Please help. I am a novice and do not know what to do and give powershell command to fix all other system and install apps

HP mini 110 operating system re-install

I have a HP mini 110 netbook. It has lost its Windows XP, even though the HP operating system works. I hope I can download the full HP and Windows operating systems.

Please identify your HP mini 110 with its complete product name or product number. Look on the service tag on the bottom of the mini.
Was Windows XP the original operating system?
What do you mean by HP operating system? Are you perhaps referring to the BIOS splash screen that shows an HP image?
I own an HP mini and use either a USB thumbdrive or a USB DVD drive to reinstall the operating system. The USB thumb drive install is much faster.

Hi All
I recently installed a SSD drive in my Macbook, I used the Disk Utility to clone the old HDD.
When i reboot the machine with the new disk I get the image of a folder with question mark.
If i reboot the machine again and hold the alt key at the chime I can see two disks.
One called SSD and another called Recovery.
if i choose the SSD the OS starts as normal and if i choose the recovery option and check the disk with disk utility
it tells me that everything is fine.
Any ideas how i can make the machine boot as it should without having to hold down the alt key a start up??

However, a little terminal witchcraft did the trick!

Silly install question

Does a full "operating system" get installed when you install the server software? Or is it just "server" software that gets installed? Reason I ask is because the one tutorial I viewed (Lynda.com) wants me to erase my hard drive before install. So I'm assuming a full Leopard 10.6.1 is also installed? Thanks for answering such a simple question.

What is the best way to get iTunes running on my Windows 7 64 bit system without installing it on my Windows 7 64 bit system?

I had iTunes installed on XP before upgrading my system and with all the install and uninstall issues I don't want to go through the same thing with Windows 7.
So, I'm looking for a way to get iTunes running on my system without installing it (like maybe in a Virtual OS on VirtualBox or VMWare.)
Something that I can easily restore and/or repair (Windows 7 Restore Points/backup options are not viable because they restore EVERYTHING to the state they were in when they were created.)

Any suggestions will help as to the best way of doing this.

I did that on XP so I know better now!
Here is just 1 example of many:
On XP the uninstall wouldn't work so I coudn't upgrade iTunes. In order to fix this without Re-Installing XP, I had to delete iTunes and then manually remove it from the registry and from Add/Remove programs before I could Install the new version. Eventualy it did work after 1 and a half days of repairs...
I'm not going through the same type of problems on Windows 7 that just simply waste my time!

Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

My mac keeps locking up it s Power mac G5 Intel using 10.6.8 OS.X. I get no warning or error messages it just locks up and the only way to get it to work again is to depress power button and restart. Its random intermittent and incredibly frustrating. I do get some screen distortion from time to time and wondered whether it may be a graphics card issue or whether it could be solved with a complete system re-install and OS upgrade?

According to everymac.com, your Mac came with Tiger, 10.4.x and can't go any higher than Lion, 10.7.x.
It would have come with gray, machine specific disks. Since there's no reason to install 10.4.x first, and then Snow Leopard over that, just purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard for $20. What you won't get with the retail version of SL is the iLife suite (Garage Band, iDVD, etc.) that were on the original bundled disks, but you can purchase iLife on Amazon pretty cheap, and get newer versions besides.
When you get Snow Leopard, you can boot to the DVD, erase the drive and install everything clean. Hopefully, you issue is only software, and not hardware related.

Hello, your best bet would be to clone your drive to an external drive, which will be bootable.
Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

The very first MacBook 1,1s can actually run 10.6, which is updatable to 10.6.8, but will only run in 32 bit mode on yours.

That is incorrect. You can install Windows on a Mac, any Mac, without having OS X installed on it.
To the OP you will need the original system reinstall USB thumb drive that came with your Mac Air if it is older than a Mid 2011 model or if it is newer than a Mid 2011 model you use the Online Internet recovery system.
If you don't have that original reinstall USB thumb drive you can order one from Apple for a small charge. Call Apple and ask to speak to someone Specifically to order a Replacement USB system reinstall thumb drive for your model year. You will need the serial number of that Air. It is etched into the bottom of the case.

I've been able to do this with some other programs, and would like to try it with my Adobe Reader and Flash. From the MSI you have to create a MST (Transforms). In the MST create now the new property INSTALLDIR=F:\, where F: is your USB-drive. If you use then the command
msiexec.exe /i [MSI] transforms=[MST]

Can I restore my system from install discs when the DVD drive in my iMac G5 is not working?
There is a disc jammed in the drive and when I try to do an install in Target Firewire mode using a G5 Tower I get an error saying the software cannot be installed on this machine, before I can even select the iMac's drive. I'm using the grey software install discs that came with the iMac.
Is my only option to open up the iMac and get the jammed disc out?

You need to set up the FireWire Target Disk mode installation with the iMac as host, so that it runs its own install disk. The G5 tower should be the target, so that you are "borrowing" only its DVD drive.
Shut down the iMac. Put the iMac install disk into the G5 tower, and reboot the G5 tower into TDM by holding down the T key. Connect the FireWire cable and then restart the iMac while holding down the option key. Hopefully the iMac startup manager will see the install disk that is in the tower; if so then select it and boot from there.
