System recovery DVDs was almost finished when the computer went down

Notebook Pavilion dv6 VA179EA. Bought Recovery DVDs from Best2serve, Business partner to HP.
After 3 discs inserted and final installation started (with a couple of restarts) - the computer just went down and did not start again. Waited for a while and started the computer. When windows started I got a failure message "The installation was failed, install again".
Did a check F1 and F2 and the tests passed fine.
I have tried to install three times by now with the same result. I am extremely happy if anyone can help me. I think I have read everything on the support pages .-)
Lives in Sweden.

Hi,
I would try wiping the Hard Drive first and then reinstalling the Operating System.
Download and install Killdisk on the link below - ( this application will write zeros to the entire drive ).
http://software.lsoft.net/KillDiskSuiteFree-Setup.exe
Download and install ImgBurn on the link below.
http://download.cnet.com/ImgBurn/3000-2646_4-10847481.html
Go to the Kill Disk application you have installed in All Programs, open the main folder, then select Bootable Disk creators and from that select Bootable DOS CD Creator which will burn the bootable ISO to a blank CD.
During the next process do not worry about any warnings as your Recovery DVDs will reformat the HDD.
Insert this CD in to your PC that is unable to load Operating System properly. Shut the notebook down, then start it again to boot from the Killdisk CD and follow the on screen instructions for Kill Disk.
A brief description of the process is here Killdisk.
Use this to wipe the whole of the Hard Drive, highlight (80h) and press f10 - ( this will make sure you include all partitions and then start the process - this may take a couple of hours! ).
When the process is complete, remove the Killdisk CD,insert the your first HP Recovery Disc and then hold down the power button until the notebook shuts down  Then restart the notebook to try the installation again.

  • I was updating to 3.6.13 and it was almost finished and it paused on its own and is now stuck there even when I turn my computer off and turn it back on. It doesn' t respond when I hit the resume button. What do I do?

I got a message screen telling me I needed to update to the latest firefox version. So I proceeded to update to 3.6.13. The update window said it was almost finished with just a few seconds remaining. It was taking a very long time when it got to that point so I minimized that screen and went to do something else. My computer kept freezing up so I went back to the update window to see how it was coming along and noticed it had paused, I tried to hit the resume button but it didn't work. I turned my computer off and turned it back on hoping that I could just start the update over but the same message was there when I went to try to update again. It still said it was almost finished with the previous update and that it was paused. What do I do to correct this?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • I was typing an email and I was almost finished and suddenly all the text disappeared

I signed into yahoo and started to type an email. I was almost finished when suddenly half of what I typed disappeared, I checked the drafts folder and it wasn't there. I still had the first sentence but I just signed out, cleared the cookies and started over. The second time I was able to type the email ok and send ok. what happened? is this a firefox issue?

If you used the mouse then you may have selected text and deleted that selected text by accident. In such a case it can be restored via Undo (Ctrl+Z), but this won't help if you have closed or reloaded that window.

  • Bluetooth no longer loads automatically when the computer starts

I have the Bluetooth Stack version 2.01.21.1. It was working fine. When the laptop booted up, the bluetooth mouse was automatically connected.
All of a sudden the icon no longer appears automatically in the system tray and so I have to manually connect the mouse each time
It is still listed in the startup menu on the desktop and it is still checked in startup in the msconfig.
    How do I fix this?
    Thanks in advance

I have just gotten off the phone with a microsoft tech who actually seems to have fixed this somewhat
He went to start/run to get to services.msc.
He chose "SSDP Discovery Services" which "enables discovery of
UPnP devices on your home network" and DISABLED it.
    Go figure
The BT icon now appears in my system tray and starts up automatically when the computer starts.
I say somewhat because It still disconnects if left idle for a long period, which it did not do previously, but at least it is there when I log on.
I want to mention that I have a Dell, not a Toshiba (did not realize this forum was for Toshiba laptops rather than Toshiba software) but perhaps
you will find this information useful.
Also, at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx you will find an autorun tool that lets you fix what is or is not
in the startup menus. It seems to work better than using msconfig which on my laptop was not making a difference as to what started up and what did not.
It is meant for IT professionals so I would not mess with it too much. However if you just check or uncheck in the startups for the BT manager you will
    not do any damage.

I was copying files to my time capsule when it crashed when it was almost finished. Now I am stuck with a light grey folder I can not delete. I would´t care if it wasn´t for the fact the folder is 1 TB size and takes up too much space. I have tried turning on and of Hiding Files in Finder and what not with no success. So, how do I delete this folder. Remember, I am not extremely familiar with technical terms.

I recommend you erase the TC.. it is the easiest and fastest solution.
In Airport utility open the disk tab and select erase.. choose quick erase.. it will take less than 1min.
Start again but copy files in small amounts.

  • 0x000000f -how do I fix this!! I already have the system recovery DVDs

I bought the recovery cds because of the same problem(0x00000f (?))
I put the cd and restarted my laptop and pressed f11key but it doesnt work. It only says F11...System Recovery on the left bottom on black screen. Can u help me please... (I already got system Recovery DVD)

When booting from the Recovery Discs- do Not tap F11. That is only to boot into recovery partition on the hard drive. Instead- tap the Esc key immediately after powering on to bring up the menu. Then tap F9 Boot Options to choose to boot from CD/DVD drive.

  • How do i transfer system recovery dvd to a usb

Recently my ultrabook broken down and now the start up is in a never ending loop. I brought a system recovery media from hp, I cleary stated my ultrabook doesn't have dvd slot and he said that's fine once you get the dvd call us up and we will help you.
I received my dvd today and when I called up there suggestion was and I quote "copy and paste all the data from the dvd to a usb, don't you know how to transfer files".
I was like that won't work can you put me trough to someone that has better understanding and he goes it will cost you 30 somthing pounds.
Can someone that understands my problem help me out?
How can I transfer a system recovery dvd to create a bootable system recovery usb. I have another pc.

Do you have only 1 dvd or several? I have seen others attempt this with a multiple dvd set and fail miserably. With 1 dvd you might have a chance. Create an ISO from the dvd with something like ImgBurn or other cd/dvd burning tool that can create an ISO file from a disc.
Once you have the ISO file use Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool  to create a usb Recovery. It was created for Windows7 but works on other ISO files.

  • HP System Recovery DVD is not working

I've downgraded my HP 15-e0001ed from W8 to W7. I removed EVERYTHING from Windows 8, including the recovery partition en I did not make a recovery disk/back up (or something else) to eventually restore my OS to W8.
During the use of W7, i noticed that the fan was blowing really loud. I checked the HP website, and i noticed that all the drivers weren't compatible with W7. I installed some of the drivers anyway, but the problem with the blowing fan seems still there now and then. I then downloaded the ISO file from this topic and this is an evalution version of W8, which can be used for 90 days. I still want to use my 'original' W8 version, so I ordered a System Recovery DVD set.
When I insert the disk I can only open the content of the disk, but there is no autorun file or something like that. I then loaded the DVD's from the system recovery mode (when you press ESC during the start up of the laptop en you have the option to go to the BIOS). When the DVD then loads, I get the following error message:
This computer is not supported bij de System Recovery Media. You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these Media.
    Error: 0130-ABH-UUW.
Anyone knows what to do to get the recovery disks to work?
    Thanks!

Re: fan blowing loud all the time.. check in the BIOS in system configuration to ensure that the fan always on option is not enabled.
Is the wireless led shown as being enabled? (white=enabled amber=disabled) It needs to be enabled
You should be able to boot from disk one of the set. If that is not possible when you have selected the DVD as the first item in the boot list by using the F9 key then contact HP. The disk set may be faulty.

  • HP System Recovery DVD Won't Run

Hi.  I currently use an HP Pavilion DM4, 3090se, which runs Winows 7.  I went to turn on my computer last week and instead of starting normally, got the Windows Boot Manager screen stating that Windows failed to start.  To fix the problem it says that I must insert the Windows installation disc and restart to repair the computer.
I did not have any Windows installation discs so I ordered the System Recovery DVD's from the HP Support Site.  I've inserted the first disc and started up my computer only to get the Windows Boot Manager again upon start up.  Inserting the Recovery DVD's seems to have no effect.  I tried inserting the second disk and the Application and Driver Recovery DVD to see if anything different happened but that was to no avail.
I did not have any issues with my computer prior to this happening and do not know what the cause may be.  I am hoping for some insight on what I can do to resolve this before I have to just send my computer in to HP.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
    You're more than welcome
In case the problem is with the notebook reading the installation disc, here's another possible option you could try as detailed below.
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
An example of a COA Label can be seen Here.
You can create Windows 7 installation Flash Drive yourself using another PC.  Download the Image file on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder - the Windows 7 image source is Digital River ).  You'll need a usb flash drive that is at least 4Gb.
    Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit.
Once downloaded, use an application such as Rufus to create a Windows 7 bootable usb flash drive.
When created, tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Insert the Windows 7 flash drive.  Select the Boot Options menu ( f9 ).  Use the arrow keys to highlight the flash drive and hit enter.
During the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

Additional drivers and software you may need for your notebook can be found Here.

  • My Mac got hacked. I was working on a word document when the computer suddenly started typing meaningful sentences on its own that describes how the hacker is skillful. At the that time I was on a password protected wifi and file sharing was off.

This is the first time I get hacked this bad. I was working on a microsoft word document when the computer suddenly started typing meaningful sentences on its own that describes how skillfull the hacker is. At the that time I was on a friends wifi network that is password protected (not sure about the encyrption), the Os X Firewall was on. I was using the admin profile, however, file sharing was off. I'm very careful not to install any suspecious 3rd party software.
So far I have verified permissions and fixed some errors there, and changed passwords.
Do I have to erase/format my computer and reinstall the Os? If so is it adequte to use the internet recovery tool or will it use old and possibly infected EFI/Root files?
Would appreciate the advice of all the Mac experts out there. Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

MacBook Pro  / Mozilla Firefox / Netflix / Silverlight Update solved - DON'T DWNLOAD FROM NETFLIX
I solved this problem tonight. I have a MacBook Pro with 10.5.8. I know, it's old. But I love my Netflix and I recently noticed that Firefox plays Netflix much better.  Then I suddenly got this message that I needed to download the latest Silverlight - it only takes 30 seconds! - WRONG.   However, after much searching, I finally did the steps in order and it worked.
This was after repeatedly downloading Silverlight from the Netflix site without success.  So here's what I did:
    1. Went to http://www.microsoft.com/getsilverlight/Get-Started/Install/Default.aspx
    2. Followed the directions. I felt like such an idiot for not doing it right before.
    3. Go to your hard drive and search for "Silverlight" to locate ANY existing Silverlight files: .dmg, etc.
[also check your Libary/ Internet Plug-ins, but the above search is faster]
    4. Drag it all to the trash and empty it.
    5. Go back to the Get  Silverlight page and click on the Install on that page, not the Netflix site.
    6. Note the steps for Safari or Mozilla Firefox - I wanted Firefox, so I follwed those instructions.
    7. Once it's installed, close all the browsers and Restart that bad boy. Right away.
    8. Open a browser, go to Netflix and proceed to joyfully rot your brain with Netflix content. Yay!

  • IMovie suddenly quits...project disappears...was almost finished..???

I teach in a small northern Wisconsin school/community, the art teacher...and we are moving into videography. Bought a Canon XL2 camera...have a Mac lab...one iMac and eMacs. Our computers are on a network.
I'm trying to work thru the learning curve myself so I can teach this to students. Twice now nearing the end of the developing video process, the movie suddenly quits. Trying to open the "Recent" by clicking on the upper left blue Apple suggests the file was never there, never existed.
The second time this happened was tonight. I had an hour length video with 20 hours of after school time into it. I had already burned the video once minus audio so we could write a script and go into our recording studio to lay tracks. Was near finished when it suddenly disappears, so it feels a bit like a kick in the gut to see this happen. Most assuredly the students will not have the resilience even once to rebuild a movie that suddenly disappears.
Our tech guy isn't quite sure what's happening either.
One thing we do see is that our Gig space consumed in the making of the video is not being returned after its disappearing...so it is chewing up memory apparently existing somewhere.
I'll have to rebuild this video beginning shortly, but wondering at this point what is to prevent this from happening all of a sudden once more???
We have iMovie 5/ iDVD 5
thanks for your thoughts on this...

Here's a thought. The error message about conversion may be misinformed. Think like a programmer for a minute. The routine he writes opens the iMovie project file that's inside the project package. He has iMovie read the file looking for a flag that tells iMovie which version made the project. The flag that iMovie expects doesn't say iMovie 5, so iMovie reports a version error to you and offers to convert the project.
But the file is fine. The problem is with the data iMovie evaluates, not the file. iMovie couldn't read it correctly because of some unexpected factor. Perhaps the server uses a disk format iMovie doesn't understand. Then iMovie's analysis would lead to the wrong result because the data isn't delivered in the format iMovie expects. Where a version flag should be, the project file says "horse feathers". Obviously that's not iMovie 5, so iMovie offers to convert it.
If something like that is happening, the problem may be caused by storing the project on the district server. Try storing the project locally.
I have no experience working with iMovie in an environment like yours, so I'm just guessing. I suspect, however, there may be lots of different disk/networking factors that might cause a failure like you see.
We do know this: iMovie expects us to use the Mac OS Extended disk format. When a local disk is something else, we get unexpected results.
