  • Problem with system recovery for a new hard drive in my Pavilion p6210y Windows 7 Premium 64bit

I decided to swap out  my hard drive when my computer would fail to start up or crash right after starting. Diagnostic tool at startup said the hard drive was faulty and other times I would get BIOHD-1 and BIOHD-2 errors. I replaced the old WD Caviar Blue 640GB with a new Caviar Green 1TB. I ordered and received from HP a system recovery disc set which included five discs labeled:
    Use This First! System Recovery,
    System Recovery 1:1,
    SYstem Recovery 1:3,
    System Recovery 2:3, and
    System Recovery 3:3.
After putting in the new hard drive I used the "Use This First!" disc and everything seemed to be going fine. The scene showed "Loading Windows" or something like that. After about 10 minutes the CD drive opened and the Monitor showed three images: a big green check mark which I assume meant everything was good up to that point; a graphic showing the removal of the first disc; and a graphic showing three discs to be put in. Wondering whether to put in the System Recovery 1:1 disc or the System Recovery 1:3 disc, I noticed that the drive bay closed with the "Use This First" disc still in. I managed to get the Drive to open after pressing the open button quite a few times. I closed it with the 1:3 disc and nothing happened (no light showing activity in the DVD drive). After a minute or so I managed to get the drive open again after quite a few times pressing the open button. I put in the 1:1 disc and still nothing. At this point I could only open the drive bay with a paper clip in the release hole. With the computer unresponsive and the monitor still showing the same as when the first disc came out, I decided to turn it off with the "Use this First!" disc in the drive hoping to start from the beginning again. Now the directions that came with the HP System Recovery discs state:
CAUTION: Do not turn off the computer, or use the keyboard or mouse during this time. Doing so will interrupt or damage the software installation.
Now when I turn the power on I get either:
the HP blue screen with the green hand, (F11=system recovery), (F9=Diagnostics), (F10=Setup) and (ESC=Boot Menu). pressing esc, F9, F10 or F11 does nothing.
Or the HP blue screen appears and then almost immediately goes to the black screen with " Reboot and select proper boot device or insert Boot media in select Boot device and press a key". I've gotten this scene while trying almost every System Recovery disc in the drive. Hitting a key does nothing other than repeating the same message.
Once I got a "The file is corrupt. The file header checksum does not match the computer checksum" error. That appeared only once in about 30 try's.
The open DVD drive button works sometimes and not other times. I can't seem to figure out a pattern for when it will work.
I don't know whether I might have accidentally moved the mouse or hit the keyboard during the first attempt. Can I  do something to the new hard drive to get it back to a state where it can start from the beginning again? Might it be a problem other than the old hard drive. Anyone have any suggestions?

Yes, of course! See the link to your model's spec above.
My apologies. The previous link went to a spec for the Satellite A505-S6960 (which came with Windows Vista installed). I had too many spec pages open at the same time and got them mixed.
So, are you telling me that I won't get this one to work?(the BPKT)
No. But you may face the problems that I outlined in this message.

  • SYSTEM RECOVERY (F11) is inaccessible after dual-booting Windows 7 and Windows 8.

I dual booted Windows 8 with Windows 7 and now the RECOVERY partition (F is not loading upon pressing F11. It gives me the boot configuration data error. I have it marked as Healthy (Primary Partition) and I am able to access the files via. My Computer in both OS, but not through F11 System Recovery.
The bcdedit log is here: http://pastebin.com/b0Y5Hd1F
    My partition letters:
    C: Windows 7
    D: Windows 8
    F: RECOVERY
    H: SYSTEM
In Visual BCD, One WRE is set to D: and the other is set to F:. Should i set both to F, which is the actual RECOVERY partition?
[2] The UEFI boot setup is unable to create HP_TOOLS parition because 4 partitions already exist. I don't remember having the SYSTEM partition earlier so maybe that repalced HP_TOOLS?
[3] When I try to create a recovey media, the orange circle filter keeps of going even after I have inserted the an external USB hard drive for it to detect. Does it usually take this long? I am guessing once the recovery media is made I could do system repair from there and get RECOVERY to work?

What is the p/n? Remove the battery and look for it. Post all alphanumeric characters.
CTO means configure to order. That means only you and HP know the notebook's configuration.
The problem you are going to run into is that there is a maximum of four primary partitions allowed by Windows. That is by design. It appears that you removed the HP_TOOLS partition, which was a requisite for the UEFI diagnostics.
Frankly it looks like what you will have to do is put the UEFI environment on a USB stick.
I would create the recovery media on a high quality 16GB USB drive.
The partition schema must be as follows:
    1) C: (NTFS)
    2) HP_Tools F: (must be FAT32)
    3) RECOVERY D: (NTFS)
    4) SYSTEM  (NTFS) created by the Windows install process
I am not aware of a dual-boot or more schema that allows a UEFI environment with the Recovery Manager accessible from F11.  I wish I had better news for you. Perhaps our forum Provost DavidPK knows how it can be done.
I do recommend that you copy the RECOVERY partition to an external disk for safety sake.
If you are able to boot into the recovery manager I strongly suggest that you create your recovery media. If you do not do that you will not have a copy of your operating system  and drivers for a plan B. I did not go with the option you used and did not create problems to deal with later.
When I play around with my loaner notebook  and configure it to dual/triple boot, I always install a different hard disk and put the original one aside.  You can still return your system to its original configuration and then take the hard disk out and use another one to play with. I believe that would be the wisest path to follow.

    Hi:
If you can still read the 25 character Microsoft Vista product key on the bottom of your PC, you can make your own plain Vista installation media and use that to at least get the OS on your PC.
Here is how to do that if you can read that key:
Please click on the link below, click on the Windows Reinstallation Guide [27-07-2013] pdf link on the upper left of the page and then read the instructions for doing this starting on page 302.

  • "1 New Message" does not appear

    Hello forumers
I have a Nokia 5800, but it appears to be broken - whenever I receive a new message, it literally doesn't show up on my front page. It just stays blank, as if I didn't receive a message. However when I go to the Messaging application, there is clearly multiple messages that I have missed over the course of the day. The message icon does not even show up on the top of the screen, I'd literally have to check my inbox to see if there are any unread messages.
What I discovered recently is that the only indication to getting a new message, is the menu button lights up. There are no vibration alerts either (I've thoroughly checked the Profile settings).
If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it a huge amount... I've also already done a software update which gave me the latest home screen with a cool contacts scroller!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

As mentioned in my first post, I've both checked the profile settings and no, the envelope icon does not appear on the screen.
You are probably right in saying there are too many messages, there are 3985 lol. I'll back them up and do as you advised, and let you know the outcome.
    Thank you very much

  • My new messages do not appear in bold in one account but do in another

I have 2 accounts in Thunderbird. In one of them the new messages show up in bold, in the other they do not. How can I fix this?

Restart Thunderbird with your add ons disabled and see if things improve. This can be done from the Help Menu.
If this fixes things, start turning each add on back on until you find the troublemaker.

  • HP System Recovery DVD incorrectly formats hard drive (WIN Vista HP SP1 64-bit 510141-001)

    HP Pavilion DV4-1225dx
    Vista Home Premium 64-bit
    AMD Turion x2
I had previously posted the issue as "HP System Recovery Fails on new HDD", however it appears that the reason it is failing is due to incorrect formatting of the hard drive:
Went to purchase the oem HDD @ Tiger Direct (Hitachi 0A56415 Travelstar 5K320 Mobile Hard Drive - 2.5", 5400 RPM, SATA 3G, 250GB, 8MB Cache) but found it was out of stock. I purchased the suggested replacement  (WD Blue 320GB Mobile Hard Drive - Designed for everyday computing - 2.5", SATA 3Gb/s, 5400RPM, 8MB C...)
I have attemptted the System Recovery several times each failing with errors. But after each failure the HDD is found to be incorrectly formatted as documented in the following link:
System Recovery Fails on new HDD
    hp G71-340US WIN 7 HP 64 Bit

    hp deskjet 6980xi
hp pavilion xt236 / ze4200 WIN XP Media Edition

    Slolearner,
After doing a little research, I believe your issue may be related to your new hard drive being an AF (Advanced Format) drive. Please see "WD Scorpio® Blue™ SATA/PATA Hard Drives", which indicates your WD3200BPVT may an AF drive.
Please see "Cannot Recover the PC after Replacing the Hard Drive with an AF Drive (Windows 7 and Vista)" for information on this subject. While this document isn't for your specific computer, it is generic enough that it applies to your situation. If you wish to use your HP Recovery Discs successfully, you may need to purchase a non-AF drive.
If your computer boots into Windows, please see "Identifying an Advanced Format Hard Drive" to download and run the HP Advanced Format Hard Drive Information tool.
If it is an AF drive, please see "Preparing Advanced Format Hard Drive for Windows" and "Improving the Performance of an Advanced Format Hard Drive" for more information on the subject and possible steps to be taken to resolve your issue.
    Lastly, it may be necessary to follow Paul_Tikkanen's advice and install Windows Vista from a Microsoft Windows Vista installation disc as follows;
    +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
If you can still read the 25 character Microsoft Vista product key on the bottom of your PC, you can make your own plain Vista installation media and use that to at least get the OS on your PC.
Here is how to do that if you can read that key:

You may also consider purchasing a copy of Windows 7 and installing that instead. Windows 7 SP1 has much better support for AF drives than the previous versions of Windows.

  • Resoring partial backup after system recovery?

    HP Pavillion D4990y
    Vista Ultimate X86 at SP2
Had to do an HP System Recovery (F11 during POST).  Chose to do a partial system backup (creates *.zip files) to an external HDD and followed instructions.  After recovery, cannot restore.
This seems to be a widespread problem when trawling the WWW.
What's the trick, here?  I can get the User files back, but I surely would like to restore the software and other programs added after purchase.

Hello AlphaBeta, Anytime you do a HP Recovery Restore, it is always recommended to perform a backup first, of your important data. There is always a risk that something may go wrong when performing a HP Restore Recovery.
HP also recommends performing a destructive recovery, that will format the hard drive and wipe the hard drive clean.
I have never used the method you mention, but if you have access to some zip files, you may be able to unzip these files and gain access to the files in the zip package.
    Just some thoughts.

  • Mail can't create a new message window ...?

    Hi,
Mail.app on my machine has been having a strange issue the past few days. Twice now, it has lost the ability to create a new message editing window.
If I click the new message button, or select "New Message" from the file menu, or click the "Reply" button on an existing message, etc. but no new message window ever appears. Quitting Mail.app and restarting, all the new message windows suddenly appear and everything is fine again ... until the next time.
Anyone else ever had Mail.app lose the ability to create new message editing windows like this?
    Machine: Powerbook G4 15" (Oct 2005, 1.67GHz)
    OS: 10.5.8
    Mail: 3.6 (936)
    All software updates applied

the only option you have is to choose between all mailboxes and inbox, in mail>preferences>general

I also have been frustrated by the problem of a mail link opening beneath an already open safari web page. I also have spaces setup with safari and mail to open in different windows. If I set them to appear in the same space the problem is fixed although I expect this is a bug. Thanks for he tip about spaces,

  • System recovery failed new hard drive

I have an HP Pavilion g-6 1d26dx laptop.  I just replaced the hard drive with one ordered directly from HP.  When I went through the System Recovery, using the disks from HP, I got the following message:
There might be unexpected reboot during specialize to BBV1
The process will cause CTO panic because the image might not be normal
I got this message after trying the system recovery with and without the supplement disc for Application and Driver Recovery DVD that came with my other disks.
I have no idea what that message means, but I would appreciate any help getting this resolved.  I was operating on Windows 7.
    Thank you!

    Hi:
I hate recovery disks. Too many times they don't work and you are left high and dry.
It has happened to me twice on different PC's.
Try the cyberlink patch for the recovery disks you purchased which may fix the issue.
    Description
CyberLink Recovery Discs utility resolves an issue where Recovery Discs sent from HP do not work on a new hard drive.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-80183-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
If that fails to work, then the only other suggestion I have for you to get the operating system installed is the following and it is only good if you can still read all 25 characters of the W7 product key on the bottom of your notebook.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft Windows 7 product key and can live with the bare operating system and software/drivers found on your PC's support page, you can make a plain W7 installation media by reading the info below.
Use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link  below. You need a DVD or a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
Use the 25 character windows 7 product key to activate your installation.
    http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below. Download the applicable version of Windows 7 that is on your product key (Home Premium, Pro, or Ultimate).
