System reinstall question

i've got a (new) late 2011 macbook pro, bought it on sale at future shop. when i did the migration data transfer assistant from my old mac to the new one, something got messed up. so now i have to wipe my late 2011 macbook pro clean and start fresh. i'm not quite sure how to do this since the old os versions always came with a cd.
i have a mountain lion installer on a thumb drive. can i boot my 2011 macbook pro from the thumb drive and use disk utility to reformat and then install a clean system directly from the thumb drive?
sorry for the newbie questions.

Boot into recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, wipe the HD, reinstall Lion, and on first boot follow the steps in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide to migrate properly. This assumes you still have the old Mac.

• System Reinstall Impact on iPod and iTunes

I need to do a system reinstall to the computer through which I access iTunes and with which I synch my iPod. Does this mean I will lose all the music I've downloaded? How do I do this to avoid losing music and having to start from scratch?

Make a back up of all the music on your computer before you reinstall the OS.
How to back up your media in iTunes.
Buegie's complete back up strategy.
When you're ready, use the back up you made to put all the music back in your new iTunes.
When you connect the iPod for the first time, you will see this message appear on screen.
You can click "yes" and your iPod will now use the new iTunes as it's "home" library.
Any more questions before you begin, post back.

i just had my old operating system reinstalled after a breakdown, and now i can't save pages documents. i don't know how to install word.

What was your old system?
What is your new System?
What version of Pages?
How did you install it?
I don't know if you can see what's on my screen, but I definitely can't see what's on yours.
To Install Word, buy it and follow the instructions.

• I can't see my Canon MG5220 printer... Initially I was getting "there is a communication error" so I rebooted everything, reset the printing system, reinstalled the driver and still NO luck! It seems to see the scanner, but never the printer. HELP!

I can't see my Canon MG5220 printer... Initially I was getting "there is a communication error" so I rebooted everything, reset the printing system, reinstalled the driver and still NO luck! I see no printers available in the Print & Scan area. If I click "+" it seems to see the scanner, but never the printer. HELP!

The printer component uses a different protocol to advertise itself on the network compared to the scanner component and it can take several seconds longer to appear after the scanner has.
That said, with the introduction of AirPrint, the MG should be seen as Bonjour Multifunction in the Add Printer window, as shown below.
Selecting this Bonjour Multifunction entry will create a printer using AirPrint and a scanner using the iCA driver.
So do you see the MG5220 as Bonjour Multifunction or just Bonjour?

• CS3 and system reinstall problem

I have had to reinstall the system on my MacPro. Reinstalled from the disc and then updated to 10.5.6 using the combo updater and everything seems to be working again.
I understand when you do a system reinstall that it doesn't touch any 3rd party applications.
I opened Photoshop and discovered that no matter what I type (font or size), it is pixilated and all jagged.
The other Adobe programs I have don't have this problem.
What am I missing to cause this problem? Any ideas?

I would start by trying a New User (on the theory only Ps is hosing that font).

If the problem clears here, go back to you normal account and delete your Ps user preferences.

• Question about operating system reinstall on Portege R500

I have purchased the R500 64SSD version, and for some reason it never struck me to check if there was a DVD drive on it.
That was rather embarassing.
I know it is easy to purchase an external drve to copy software etc on to the Portege, so that isnt so bad.
However, I am considering a re-install, possibly to XP, but maybe just to reduce the repulsive amount of bloatware i got on my machine when i switched it on.
Now to the crux of the matter: if i use an external USB disk drive, i need USB drivers. If i delete the OS, that will delete the drivers.
So, finally, my question is: How in the name of Hell is anyone supposed to put a fresh install into an R500?
Thanks for your patience.

I understand everything till the point with the bloatware.
But what I dont understand is: what do you want with a USB disk drive? I hope you dont mean a USB-HDD (its a little bit confusing). ;)
Usually you can use all drives without the need of some drivers because the machine offers you the option to boot from a USB device after powering the machine up and see the Toshiba logo pass...
You must only press F12 and choose the option to boot from an external USB CD/DVD drive. Thats all.

• Need help understanding service, repair, operating system reinstall

I bought a Thinkpad X1 Carbon 3443 laptop on the black friday sale in November 2013. Due to demand, the unit didn't ship until after Christmas. I didn't complain, but Lenovo offered a 5% rebate for my troubles. Still waiting on that to be processed.I've had all the documented problems with the Intel 6205 wireless card that are all over the forums. I finally upgraded my router just to resolve the issue. In March of 2015, after the warranty expired, one of the hinges broke. I took it to an authorized repair facility and was told (after 4 weeks) the part was no longer available. I called the service center listed on the website. They offered to ship me a box so I could send them the laptop for evaluation. Since it was out of warranty I would have to pay for any repairs. After two weeks, they sent the laptop back. They never contacted me during the process. I didn't get any quotes on the cost, nor did I authorize any work. They say they fixed the laptop. I can see the hinge is physically fixed. However, I cannot start the laptop. They wiped all my data, including the operating system. I have all my files backed up,  but since this laptop does not have a CD or DVD drive, I don't have a way to reinstall the OS, which is Windows 8.1.Also, today, I received an invoice, saying they charged my credit card for what is almost the cost of a new machine. Lesson learned, never give the Chinese your credit card. So, my question, is there any way I can reinstall Windows 8.1? I don't have it on a disk or any hardware. It was shipped with the laptop at purchase. Service deleted it, so I don't have a copy at all. Also, don't be like me. Buy something else.

After looking at the Telus specific software download page (in North American menu) I noticed that there is a link for the 4.5 version and the 4.3 that I have.  I guess 4.5 is available there then.  I might give Telus a quick call and see if they know anything about it.  More then likely not.  The tech support people tend to be ill informed on anything detailed such as this.
thanks again

• Reformat/Reinstall Question re Panther

Hi and sorry for any duplication of this questionin other posts.
I need to reformat a 160G HD in my Dual Boot G4. OSX 10.3.9
must be reinstalled. It is too late to use clone apps like SuperDuper because the drive was unfortunately already erased, and a manual drag-back of the entire contents of the
backed-up contents of the HD was performed, leaving missing
invisible files missing. Hence, System 9 Folder seems to be okay, but, for OSX apps there are certain apps - mainly browser/
email, which i would prefer to retain the original settings, and,
migrate existing email folder contents (inbox/sent box etc).
The browser is Netscape 7.2.
If possible i'd prefer to simply drag/drop over anything that i can
after wiping and reinstalling/updating the HD system back up to 10.3.9. I also assume that for my Sys. 9 folder (dual-bootable MDD) i can do a clean install and drag/drop prefs manually for the various apps within the OS 9 domain which i boot into independent and separately of OSX operation.
I'm looking for the shortest path by which to accomplish this
reinstall and to minimize the amount of individual application
reinstallations from scratch...wherever i can drag existing apps
and associated Prefs into the right places within OSX Panther.
Any advice much appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Cornelius, thanks and i will try to clarify as concisely
as possible;
Does this HDD have anything on it currently?<<
Yes, the HD does have elements of the previous OSX System
but will not boot from OSX (a result of the "drag-back" of
backed up content, along with my OS 9 Folder, rather than
being able to successfully use SuperDuper or other clone
app....
Do I understand that you backed up the HDD in question by copy by dragging to a backup drive, erased HDD and copied stuff back by dragging?<< </div>
Yes. As such, System 9 FOlder/Contents seems to be fine
having done it that way, but i recognize why OSX does not.
Are you planning to erase the drive again, install Panther, and repeat the process of copying by dragging?<<</div>
I want to erase/reformat the drive again, and reinstall Panther using proper Disk-Set procedure of restore/reinstall
but save original prefs of as much of the previous system(s)
apps (for both OS 9 and OS X) i want to save/preserve..
presumably having to do so by manual drag where possible.
Does this mean you want to repeat the process which you have already performed?<< </div>
No, just whatever can be salvaged for individual application
preferences, most importantly, Browser/Email (bookmarks,
inbox/address books, mail settings prefs)- within BOTH
systems... I would like to preserve, rather than having to
a) re-enter User Prefs, Mail Settings and also need to
keep existing Email in the respective browser mail apps.
Other apps, i can take the time to reinstall and re-enter
registration data.
I hesitate to make assumptions in terms of what you are doing. However, backing up and restoring by copying by dragging, while it works for simple data files, for some typs of apps, and for OS 9 System Folder and OS 9 Applications folder, will not give you the desired outcomes for other types of files. In OS X there are hidden files which are essential to the efficient functioning of the OS that cannot be copied by dragging.<<</div>
My questions above is to ascertain exactly what you have done so far and what the current situation is. We can then take it from there to see what can be done next to minimize the damage and enable you to recover in the best way possible.<<
I totally understand. the entire situation as it stands
happened due to some anomaly whereby using CarbonCopyCloner
(and SuperDuper before that) was sidetracked because both
programs reported inability to recopy "All Files" back to
the Drive (error message to that effect). To get back up and running in OS 9, I then just dragged OS 9 System back
onto the HD and have been using that environment only.
Soo, the bottom line is, i need to erase the HD and reinstall it all...but want to save whatever prefs i can
in the proper fashion. (Far more familiar with doing so in
OS 9 stuff than OSX)
Hope that addresses where i'm at with this and appreciate
your help.

• Network problems after update; system reinstall not fixing it.

Hello, first post here ^^
Sorry if I write with a bit of engrish. I'm very tired ^^"
My brother's laptop, a Portuguese Classmate PC (aka "Magalhães", version MG2 -- unfortunately, I can't find the corresponding international version, but have a picture) doesn't has any network at all, be it wired or wireless, with the updates of 3/August/2011 installed. I think the problem is udev.
I have no problems when using an installation media, at least for wired network.
Even after reinstalling, I still have no network.
Wired
The problem with wired, is that the eth0 interface is gone. Have tried network and NetworkManager, and it's just gone. In the output of ifconfig I only have the loopback interface (and would have wlan0, if I had the firmware for the wireless card installed).
Wired problem solved! Sorry, I actually searched the Internet for a solution and couldn't find anything useful, and only now noticed there's already a thread here about it. I should have searched this forum, instead of the Internet... sorry!
Wireless
Previously, I only had to install the rtl8192se chipset drivers from AUR.
But now, with the latest updates, the kernel (or the udev, I don't know which it is)was constantly giving me errors through tty, regarding to wifi. It could scan for networks, but not connect. I have tried with WPA and no security, result was the same.

• Flash won't open (unexpected quit) after system reinstall from Time Machine

After purchasing a new machine, I reinstalled everything from my Time Machine backup, including all applications. Now Flash CS4 gives me "unexpected quits" every time I try to open it. Flash CS3 opens though. I deleted the prefs file and it still won't open.

I have/had a similiar problem. What I did was reset the SMC and PRAM.  You can also do a safe boot. For the PRAM, I had to do three times, and my computer finally booted up. Afterwards I verified my disk and repaired my permissions. So far so good. I guessing that Spotlight needed to re-index the system.

• How do I recover files from a Time Machine backup after a clean system reinstall?

I had a really funky problem with my Japanese input that is too weird (and irrelevant at this point) to go into here. The gist is that I took my 13-inch, Mid-2012 MacBook Air to the Apple Store in Osaka, and one of their geniuses told me he couldn't isolate the cause and that the only solution was to do a complete reinstall. Of course, I had backed up my whole disk to my Time Capsule before going to the store. The problem is, I cannot do a straight backup, because that will simply bring back the unsolvable problem.
I got the MacBook Air home and used the moving assistant utlity (sorry, I don't know the English name for it since my system's in Japanese) to resinstall all my applications. So far so good. The problem is, I have no idea how to get my files, photos, music, and movies from the Time Capsule into my new account. I didn't see any option for that when I ran the moving assistant utility, and I absolutely do not want to resinstall anything from the old Library Folder.
When I go into Time Machine mode, pinks lines on the right side of the screen indicate that Time Machine has all my old backups there, but when I try to navigate to them, I get only an empty black window. I assume that's because Time Machine does not recognize my old account and new account as the same account (and indeed there is no reason at this point that it should, since I don't know how to link them).
Any help would be very much appreciated.

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

• Hard drive and system recovery question - "No boot device"

I replaced a 320Gb - 5400 rpm drive that failed with a 750Gb - 7200 rpm drive.  Using the HP System Recovery disks to reload the OS, once it goes through the restoration process the mb doesn't seem to recognize the hard drive and I get the "No Boot device" message upon rebbot. Unfortunately, the BIOS is not the best and it won't allow me to see if it actually recognizes the new hdd, which I suspect it doesn't  - even though the Recovery Manager seems to . Either that or I have a bad MB.
Sytem information - HP G71-340US
Processor - 2.20 GHz Intel Core2 Duo Processor T6600
BIOS - InsydeH20 3.5
So even though Recovery manager *appears* to be installing W7 just fine, but it's a no go when it's time to actually boot to it, what is the problem?  Is this a mb issue or did I just buy the wrong hd?

Well, a few reboots later and it seems the issue is no longer the mb or the hd.  W7 is having a tough time though, and am now working on the second system restore, this time from the recovery partition, to try and get it to load fully.  When I reinstalled from the System Recovery DVD the second time through, I skipped installing the third (driver) disk and that appeared to help.  Just wish I could get the OS to comply. Maybe the third time will be a charm?

• How to restore missing bookmarks icons after system reinstall?

After reinstalling my system (Win 7 x64) and downloading the latest Nightly build of Firefox, logging in to Sync and syncing my bookmarks, I discovered that the icons are missing (white square with gray outline). After visiting a web page, the icon is set back to normal. The problem is, that I have lots of bookmarks, and it would take an enormous amount of time to visit every page. And on the second hand, with icons its easier to access bookmarks.

I don't think you can, you'd have to revisit every website.
