System Requirements for Hardware Encryption on Crucial SEDs

The majority of current Crucial SSDs are Self-Encrypting Drives (SEDs) which means all data is always encrypted by the controller when written to the NAND and decrypted when read. Windows 8 BitLocker can work with this built-in hardware encryption ability when you apply a password in Windows, provided the following requirements are met:
•    BitLocker only supports TPM version 1.2 and 2.0 (or newer). In addition, you must use a Microsoft-provided TPM driver (Please note, BitLocker can also work without a TPM, but it will need a USB flash drive to set the password instead)
•    The system needs to support UEFI 2.3.1
•    Make sure UEFI boot is enabled and you have a UEFI enabled Windows 8 installed
•    The computer must boot natively from UEFI.
•    The boot order must be set to start first from the SSD (not the USB or CD drives)
•    Dynamic discs are not supported by BitLocker
•    The SSD must have two partitions (drives with Windows installed generally do anyway) and the main partition to be encrypted must be NTFS
•    Ensure ATA Security features, for example Secure Boot, are disabled in the BIOS. The M500 supports either ATA Security or TCG Opal (which is needed for SED) but not both.
•    The system needs to support Opal 2.0 The Opal 2.0 standard is not backwards compatible; Crucial SEDs are not compatible with Opal 1.0
•    The computer must have the Compatibility Support Module (CSM) disabled in UEFI.

i'm very glad to read, from the article you referenced, that there's no performance hit.  but that's only 1 of 2½ issues.  i have some follow-up questions.  perhaps we should take this to a forum instead of the knowledge base?
-what about prior issue #2 (securely wiping the drive)?  is this easily and instantly doable?  we'll ignore #3 (relying on microsoft gets ½ a point).
-with the encryption keys stored on the controller, doesn't using third-party encryption software mean the keys themselves aren't encrypted by a user pw, making it that much easier for someone with physical access to the drive to extract them from the firmware?
-if the controller is doing the encryption, why bother with bitlocker?  is it so slightly-more-savvy-than-average joe can easily enable it, or so you don't have to write it into the firmware?  (i'm being serious, not snarky--i'm a software developer myself.)  personally, i'm dual-booting win7* and ubuntu 14, which means i need 2 separate encryption methods instead of just supplying my credentials at boot to decrypt the hd and then choosing which os to load.
-also, if i upgrade the windows os, ms requires the os volume to be decrypted first.  this would obviously not be the case if windows was unaware that it was encrypted.
*last, what about those poor silly saps who are running win7 (or earlier)?  i just read that win7 bitlocker doesn't support self-encrypting drives--it was an update as of win8.  we're just out of luck?  i realize you can't support everything, but win7 is still a ms-supported os, and it seems like a better service to (more of) your customers to enable full-disk encryption all the time.
thank you!

  • System requirements for hardware when using one server and 9 terminals?

Hi, in our school there are 9 terminals connected to one Multipoint server 2011 (CPU: Intel xeon e3-1226v3 8M cache, 3.30GHz, 32RAM).
In my opinion the choice of hardware is not suitable for so many terminals.
    The question is:
What hardware do we need if our students worked with those programs in the same time - Corel Draw, Photoshop, ect.
    Thank you!

Photoshop can be a bit pig heavy. The CPU you are using is only Quad Core and NOT Hyper-Threaded.
A bit underpowered for that many users on that App IMHO.
Also, are the clients direct connected, USB, or RDP ?
If you want to keep that machine in service, you could get another identical box and split half the users to the new one.
If you really want them all on the same box, I would prob replace the current one with something like a Lenovo TD340. Config with at least a single 6 Core XEON CPU, or Dual Quad XEON w/ Hyper-Threading, 64GB Memory, NVidia Quadro K4000 ( If there are any
direct connections ) and at least 2 10k SAS HD's. Preferably 4x 10k SAS HD in RAID 10.

  • Hardware/system requirements for OBIEE 11g

Does anyone have the hardware and system requirements for OBIEE 11g? I'm trying to procure hardware for an internal environment but want to make sure that the system requirements have not changed significantly from 10g.
Can anyone share this information? It would be greatly appreciated. I know 11g is not out yet but trying to get a headstart on ordering hardware in preparation.

I don't think there will be any major changes in the hardware side of things. Basically anything that was able to run 10g should be able to run 11g. They will probably add support for newer software components which normally happens at each release.

I'm hoping this will be a good Skype alternative. I use Linux and would love to use Hello on my old Pentium III and Athlon XP computers.

    Recommended Hardware
'''Pentium 4 or newer processor that supports SSE2'''

Been like that for quite awhile now, not new to Firefox 36.0.

  • Does not meet the system requirement for installing BB App World

I bought a Curve 8520 in Singapore yesterday. When i tried to download App world into this phone, it says "my phone does not meet the system requirement for the software".  does it refer to hardware specification or the BB O/s version on the phone. How can fix it because being able to use App world is one of the purposes that i buy a BB.
Also, How about MS Live Messenger , facebook ?  Do I need to install them seperately through App World?
    Please help!

    Hi there!
Please see these links for reference:
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/services/appworld/download.jsp#tab_tab_system_requirements
    http://www.blackberry.com/app_includes/devicesoftware/appworld/appworld_availability_en.html
A key component in accessing AppWorld is your carrier -- if they are not delivering it, then you can't get it. If you don't have an adequate plan from them that incudes it, then you can't get it. Hence, if you meet the hardware requirements AND it is available in your country, then you need to contact your carrier to find out how you can get it via their network.
All that said, AppWorld is merely a storefront, vending apps developed by others...there are many other storefronts available that don't have the same restrictions.
    Good luck!

I am trying to found out what the system requirements are for 4.0 of Firefox.
I ask this because I am currently running Firefox 3.6 on 11.3 OpenSUSE Linux. I am considering an OS upgrade. I built a LiveCD to test the new OS before installing and when I try running Firefox it crashes. It is apparently 4.0 beta or something. Nowhere can I find a simple list of system requirements for Firefox.
