System resource hog and Windows crashes....
Recently I have been having major issues with iTunes. The amount of memory it is using is very high and if I use anything else it crashes my system. I am running the current download of iTunes v7.0.2.16
In order to do anything with iTunes I have to shutdown all but the minimum things running on my PC.
I have taken a snapshot which can be viewed below.
Any help would be deeply apreciated.

Also you need Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP Home Edition SP2, or Windows XP Professional SP2 to run iTunes.

System.exit(VALUE) and Windows 98?
Has anyone got System.exit(integer) to return a value other than 0 under Windows 98?
Regardless of what integer I enter as an exit code, java.exe always seems to return 0. This does not seem to be the case under Windows NT, where the correct exit code is passed back.
Is anyone aware of this problem/found a workaround?I found the same behaviour of Java between NT 4.0 SP 4 and Windows 98.
Are you sure you get the exit code right in the dos box?
%ERRORLEVEL% is NT specific, I think.
In normal DOS you can only ask e.g.:
if ERRORLEVEL 3 goto three
and this will jump to label
:three
if the exit code is >= 3 !!!
Test your program by this bat file:
java ...
if %errorlevel 6 goto x6
if %errorlevel 5 goto x5
if %errorlevel 4 goto x4
if %errorlevel 3 goto x3
if %errorlevel 2 goto x2
if %errorlevel 1 goto x1
goto x0
:x0
echo was: 0
goto end
:x1
echo was: 1
goto end
:x2
echo was: 2
goto end
:x3
echo was: 3
goto end
:x4
echo was: 4
goto end
:x5
echo was: 5
goto end
:x6
echo was: 6
goto end
:end
echo End.
You see:
7 or higher goes also to :x6 -
Backup of solution manger system on DB2 and windows.
Hello Gurus,
I am new to this DB2 database. I have newly installed the Solution Manager 7.0 on windows 64 bit EE and DB2 V9.5 UDB. I am not able to take full backup by choosing the action 'Database Backup to Device'. I am also confused for what value to be entered for Number of Buffers,Buffer Size,Parallelism,Priority in Action details. I am getting the following error in Action log tab.

You are cyclically overwriting your log - that´s why you can´t do an online backup. To change that, you have to configure logging properly and then do an offline backup first. After that you can do online backups (also see https://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/db2luw/v9r5/index.jsp?topic=/com.ibm.db2.luw.messages.sql.doc/doc/msql02413n.html)
To get an idea what you need to do configure check the guide

System error message and application crash - ModName: lvrt.dll Offset: 00080a6a
I'm running into an error message which is proving particularly difficult to debug. After my built application has been running for some time, a windows system error will pop up telling me my application has done something bad and needs to be shut down (and sorry for the inconvenience). Clicking through to the "see what the error report contains" page reveals the issue as being in the lvrt.dll module at offset 0080a6a.
This unfortunately doesn't mean much to me.
On some occasions when I click "Don't Send", another error message pops up informing me there is "Not enough memory available to complete this operation".
The program will typically run between 8 and 24 hours before the error occurs, though I've had it run error-free for upwards of 48.
My program is unfortunately fairly large, and depends on communication with proprietary hardware so can't be uploaded in a functional state. In general terms, the body of the program (which is executing when the error occurs) involves RS-485 serial communication and simultaneous display of data to 7 continuously updating strip charts (producer-consumer design), along with envalope detection and RMS calculations in real time, all of which is multiplied by two parallel channels (around 1Mb/s data rate for each). The data is also buffered and stored in binary files for later review. Binary files are closed and a new one is opened for every 10 minutes of data collection (approx 50MB of data).
There are also about 40 user controls associated with each channel, and are polled periodically (a couple times a second). The crashes occur during over night tests, however, when there is no user input. Globals are used for inter-panel communication, but no global is written to in more than one location (most are read in multiple locations).
I know this is a bit of a shot in the dark here, but does the lvrt.dll error at offset 00080a6a mean anything to anyone? Are there any "typical" causes for a failure in lvrt.dll having to do with prolonged high data rate serial communications? For reference, this has occured on multiple machines, but all the machines it has occured on are identical out-of-the-box laptop models running XP 32. I'm going to try to run an overnight test tonight on the development machine and see if I get any different results (Vista 64 vs Windows XP 32).
I can't say my hopes are high with this one, and I'm gonna continue to comb over the code for any possible conflicts, but any insight would be appreciated.Claire,
Next time the error message comes up I will take a screenshot of it for you. Unfortunately that may not be until Monday, as tonight is the soonest I'll be able to run another long-term test. The time between failures is the most frustrating part to debug!
There are no errors on compiling or building the application in LabVIEW. My testing has been done mostly on the distribution laptops in application form, with no LabVIEW dev tools installed, Windows XP 32 bit.
The overnight test I attempted on the development machine (within the LabVIEW environment) welcomed me the next morning with a rebooted machine, and so I wasn't able to see an error message (if there was one). Vista 64 on the development machine. Reviewing the data files, I got about 9 hours worth before the crash.
Given the time between failures and the large volume of data I'm passing around, this seems like memory leak type behavior. I'm a bit confused by the fact that it seems to fail in lvrt.dll every time, though. I'm don't know what that indicates, if anything. -

Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

XP SP2 system random reboots and app crashes
I got this new setup in signature about a month ago... Installed XP SP1 and right away put SP2 on it. At times it can run nice for a number of days, other times it acts weird applications crash and without any warning system reboots - looking in system log there's an error with "Error code 00000019" that I can't make anything out of.
Got latest BIOS and drivers from Live Update.
CPU TEMP 46 C and SYS TEMP 40 C CoreCenter shows when idle. Heavy use CPU goes up to 63 C, SYS only rises a couple of degrees.
Windows Memory Diagnostic reports no errors.
Any ideas and suggestions? What else can I try? Is it a OS or hardware prob most likely?
Thanks in advance
I read the thread about SP2 not booting but I've never had any problems booting my Windows...
I got "DEP for essential windows programs and services only" set, I've tested the other one too for a while but that failed curing my illness.

Using iPod classic on two systems: OS X and Windows
I've bought my first iPod, a 160 gb classic. Now I would prefer to use this device on my Mac, but also on my pc. It works fine with OS X, but Windows (XP SP 2) can't use/enter it now. Do I need te reformat my iPod drive to use it on both systems. Are there any other solutions?
(I'v installed the latest updates for the iPod and iTunes as well)*Do I need te reformat my iPod drive to use it on both systems.*
Yes that is one solution. Macs can read Windows drives so you could restore and format the iPod on a PC. iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac. I've no experience of the iPhone or the Touch but Apple has until now only fully supported using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. in other words all future software updates for the iPod would have to be carried out in Windows to maintain the formatting. If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats).
*Are there any other solutions?*
Yes there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows though to be completely sure they will work with the latest iPods you need to check out their web pages. XPlay and MacDrive for instance get good reviews. XPlay is an iPod specific program and can be used as an iTunes alternative, MacDrive is more general and lets you access various types of Mac formatted drives on Windows such as CDs, DVDs, hard drives etc:

How to set-up a wireless system for Mac and Windows?
In a few weeks I will visit my brother in Tennessee, USA who has a cable modem (very good speed - "Comcast") connected to one desktop PC (Windows XP I believe).
I want to spend 2-3 weeks at his home using my MacBook core duo (May 2006 version) via wireless-- and what is the BEST way to install a wireless internet access for my brother that I can use for the 3 week visit? NOTE: After I leave, this has to work for him wireless with his PC's - not Macintoshes. But I want to have the flexibility to be in several rooms of his long (but single story) home during my stay.
Can I use an AirPort Extreme Base Station "n" and if so, will my MacBook work with this at maximum download / upload speed (i.e. equivalent to the cable) - and will my brother's PC's also be able to connect? Or is there another Airport base station?
OR-- should I head down to "Generic Computer Store" and just by a wireless router (WiFi)(think that's what they call them) and connect this to his cable modem? IF SO WILL THAT WORK FOR MY MAC?
Thanks for any comments or references here -
Regards,
SteveCan I use an AirPort Extreme Base Station "n"
Yes.
and if so, will my MacBook work with this at maximum download / upload speed (i.e. equivalent to the cable)
The speed of your internal network generally is much much faster than the speed of your internet connection. Unless he has an internet connection faster than approx 6Mbps then even dropping down to the old 802.11b Airport would not seen any decrease in speed of downloads etc...
and will my brother's PC's also be able to connect?
If his PC is 802.11b/g-compliant, it shouldn't have any problems connecting to the AirPort base station.
Or is there another Airport base station?
The other AirPorts would work, but the AirPort Express & older 802.11g AirPort Extreme base stations have a max. range of 150 feet.
OR-- should I head down to "Generic Computer Store" and just by a wireless router (WiFi)(think that's what they call them) and connect this to his cable modem? IF SO WILL THAT WORK FOR MY MAC?
That is always an option as well, especially since he will be the primary user throughout the year. I'd suggest going with a brand name, like Belkin, D-Link, or Linksys for the wireless router choice. -
Why is mail so slow and uses all of system resources?
I want to use Mail on my Macbook Air 2010. I use it on my iPhone with no problems at all. I have several gmail accounts and me.com accounts. I have tried even just using only my main account in Mail. I am now using a system resource monitor and can see that Mail takes up 100% of resources while appearing to do nothing. When I click on Sent or Drafts, it often shows nothing when I know that there should be stuff there. I have tried "rebuild" which did not seem to do anything. Also, it takes forever to quit.
I cannot understand why this program does not work for me. I have not done anything out the ordinary that I am aware of. Does it not work well with gmail accounts? If so, why does the iPhone version handle gmail so well?
I will try that, just using my iCloud account only. I just want to make sure that when I mail a link from safari or a photo from iPhoto, that it actually goes out and goes in a reasonable amount of time.
Mail for me is a system resource hog. I am afraid to open it.I stopped all processes and deleted all accounts and started over with the gmail account. This time, I chose the option to not store anything locally. It warned me that I would not be able to read email offline. When I clicked "save" from preferences, it froze for about an hour with CPU maxed out. I am going to force quit mail, delete the account again and just go with my fresh iCloud account. I can set my gmail account to forward messages and then I can freely delete them from the iCloud account knowing that they are still there in gmail. I guess this will work ok. I just won't be able to send out from my gmail account from Mail which will confuse some recipients and then lead to people sending mail to the wrong account.
I wish there was an option in Mail to "act like iOS Mail." I believe that would solve my problem. -
Mac Pro crashes on Leopard and Windows XP
Hello,
I've a quite interesting problem here!
It started with a crash this morning while running Minecraft (a 3D game): The music was still runing normally, I could still move the mouse cursor, but couldn't access any windows or applications. I couldn't use my keyboard neither. I was however able to run Mac OS X normally after this incident.
Then, later on Windows XP I ran a 3D game and Windows crashed (death blue screen).
From this moment, I couldn't start Mac OS X anymore. It goes well until the small apple and the waiting circle, but then the circle stops, I see vertical light blue lines over the screen, and black&white horizontal lines at the bottom of the screen. Then, I've got a blue screen still with the horizontal black&white lines and it stays like that.
I'm able to start Mac OS X on safe mode, but I have horizontal white lines all over the screen and my mouse cursor is a square of about 1cm.
I'm not able anymore to launch the startup disk, because, when I boot from the disk, it crashes after a while on the apple screen and I've got the same vertical light blue lines.
I was able to run the disk utility, it says everything is OK. I ran the extensive hardware tests and it also says everything is fine.
I cannot neither run Windows, I just get my screen turning off (black screen without signal).
The graphic card is a GeForce 8800 Gt.
Any idea???? => I'm ready to reinstall Mac OS X, but I need to know how since I cannot run the install disk!
Thank you really much for your help!
leoLack of cooling under Windows.
A graphic card dying. ATI 5770 upgrade.
Disk Utility First Aid isn't 100% fool-proof.
FBDIMMs need cooling and could be dying also (AHT won't pick that up).
Disk Warrior for Mac OS; chkdsk for XP along with:

Never forget to check and try to rule out any USB or other cables, extensions, devices etc. They can cause mischief. USB keyboards, hubs included.
Not a lot that can be done under Windows to improve cooling like you can with SmcFanControl under Mac OS but there is/was "InputRemapper" that does help - a lot. -
Satellite Pro A200 (PSAF4A) - HDD stops and computer crashes
Hello
This is my first post in this forum but definitely not my first issue
I recently had to re-install Windows Vista on my Laptop because I had an undetectable virus that attacked Windows and rendered it useless.
Before then I had many, many start-up errors and windows crashes but all of which were avoidable or fixable. After the re-install I noticed the stability of windows was much better until recently.
I have not changed any settings or anything what so ever on my Laptop that could affect performance in any way but I am having new problems occur.
If I have my computer running, performing basic tasks for a few or more hours I notice the performance drops and suddenly my computer will completely stop responding.
The disc doesn't show any sign of life after this point and its only solution is a "Disruptive Shutdown".
This shows up in the Reliability and Performance monitor as just that, there are no errors shown before it and nothing is done after.
I have also noticed if either windows defender or my other virus protection runs a system scan my performance is reduced to the point where I can not perform as simple a task as open an explorer window. This also results in complete non-responsiveness. This never happened before about a week ago and now it happens every time.
Both of these started within the last few days and there is no obvious reasoning behind it. My CPU idle is still the same, no new processors added and no settings changed.
Could this be a problem with Windows, my HDD, my CPU or something worse?
Is there a reason why this might be happening and is there a fix for either of these problems?First of all, did you reinstall Windows with the Toshiba recovery disk or Microsoft disk?
This is strange and not easy to say what is wrong but in your case I would test the HDD and RAM.
There are special tools to test these parts:
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
http://memtest86.com/
On both website you can download a CD image. Burn it on a CD, boot from it and then you can test the parts.
Good luck! -
Labview Full Developement System 8.2 on Windows 7
Hi there,
I have a question about the compatibility of Labview Full Developement System 8.2 and Windows 7.
Is it possible to run this system without problems on a PC that is using Windows 7?
I am also using the Labview DSC module (version 8.2.1).
I'm just wondering if I will get problems when I am going to run programs that I made, in Windows 7.
Or is there a new version of Labview that is compatible with Windows 7?
If so, is it possible to use older versions of Labview in this new version (bij transfering the files).
I hope to hear soon from some of you.
Regards,
KennyLabVIEW 2009 is the first LabVIEW version officially compatible with Windows 7 (see also)
Quote: Starting with 6.0.2, LabVIEW should run on newer, unlisted versions of Windows without error messages, but these are not officially supported.
(However, I was able to run LabVIEW 8.2 just fine under windows 7 64 bit. I don't know if there are potential DSC issues. Another option is the windows XP compatibility mode virtual PC available for some version of Windows 7).
LabVIEW 2009 and 2010 are fully compatible with Windows 7. You should be able to open your LabVIEW 8.2 files fin in any newer version. For details, have a look at the LabVIEW version compatibility matrix.

Using system resource to redirect class loading
It seems to be an open secret that the JVM can be manipulated to load classes (or packages?) from alternate locations.
Take, for example, this excerpt from a SAX user guide:
In case your Java environment did not arrange for a compiled-in default (or to use
the META-INF/services/org.xl.sax.driver system resource), you'll probably need to
set the org.xml.sax.driver Java system property to the full classname of the SAX
driver, as in
java -Dorg.xml.sax.driver=com.example.xml.SAXDriver MySAXApp sample.xml
So what is the "META-INF/services/org.xml.sax.driver" system resource? Clearly this resource is tied (historically) to the Manifest file in the jar archive format. Is the META-INF/services prefix special for remapping class names? What other services are there? What other resources can be placed in the META-INF directory? Does this work only for Manifest files in jar archives, or does it also work for conventional file systems?
Does the -D option set class locations or package locations? How is the replacement class located (using the same class path)? Is the actual package/class name available for every (potentially) loaded package/class?
How does this work? Where is this documented? What is this called? Thanks for the reply, but this doesn't really answer
the questions that I intented. Let me try again.
The original posting shows two ways that the JVM can
be coerced to load a implementation from an alternate
location. This coeretion process seems to be an
undocumented, ad hoc extension to the JVM. For the
purposes of these question, I call this process "class
substitution".No, you are misinterpreting what you are seeing there.
The example command that you gave does nothing but define a property which is available via System.getProperty().
That is all it does in terms of java (actually Sun's implementation of java.)
>
A) Where in the Java documentation is this type of
class substitution discussed? I have searched the
Java language definition, Sun's Java site, and "Java
In a Nutshell" for references to "system resources",
"services", and various alternatives to no avail. The
documentation has some reference to Properties, but
the connection to class substitution is opaque to me.
There is no class substitution.
There is however, class loading. And that can be done in several ways.
1. For one you can write your own class loader - see java.lang.ClassLoader.
2. Or you can also load your own classes, which is likely to be what the command line you see is doing (when you run other code associated with that in your own application.) That is called reflection. You could start with the java.lang.Class - and practically any java book will cover it.
3. And it is possible to to load your own class instead of a core class. For example you could replace java.lang.String. Your command line does not do that. But if you look that the documentation for java (Sun) you will find references to the Xbootclasspath option.
For 1 and 2 above the Sun JVM will do nothing with the command example you gave unless you write some code or use some code (outside the sun jvm) that uses it. For 3 it doesn't have anything to do with example you gave.
B) Can I achieve this result (class substitution) If I
put a META_INF directory in a normal file system class
directory, or does this only work for JAR files. I'm
sure a simple experiment would suffice, but I'd like
to know WHY? -
Oracle 10g XE and Windows Vista
I bought a laptop with an excitement; and installed oracle 10g XE, now I can't run the oracle on this Windows Vista? Any guidance and suggestion would be much appreciated.
I couldn't dare to install linux fedora on this laptop which has Windows Vista for a dual boot sytem because I read all negative things in google about the dual bootying system of fedora and windows vista. Any suggestion and guidance would be one again would be very much appreciated.
[email protected]I have a problem with Oracle XE installed on my laptop 1GB RAM with Windows Vista :).
It installed ok, but when I run my program (Visual Foxpro 9) it stays 30 seconds up to a minute to make a few selections.
The same program on my laptop works fine with other databases installed on windows xp or windows 2003 server.
Also, from other computers I can connect to Oracle XE on Windows Vista and make those selections fine.
I uninstalled Oracle XE from my laptop.
I downloaded Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) Enterprise/Standard Edition for Microsoft Windows Vista and I installed it.
It's the same problem.
On my laptop, my program (VFP9 - connects through ODBC) or PLSQL Developer freeze when I do a select from a table with 72053 rows (the result has 2000 rows).
If I connect from another computer, where I installed Oracle Instant Client from Oracle Database 10g Client Release 2 (10.2.0.3) for Vista, the select runs instantaneously :)
My head hurts very much at this time.
We bought the laptop with Vista OEM for presentations :) - it's unusable at this point :)
