System Resource Manager on Linux?

We run Sun SRM on Solaris which allocates max shares or slices to particular accounts on a dual CPU the machine.
In this way, not one type of process can run-away with the machine if misbehaved. Our current use of SRM is managing particular instances of Web Applications (servlets) running under Java Virtual Machines.
Is there any type of SRM software available for Linux?
Can CPU resources by allocated in this way?

I don't know about the Solaris thingy, but couldn't you use ulimit (of which the settings are maded permanent in RedHat by editing /etc/security/limits.conf)?

  • Windows System Resource Manager deprecated

    Hi all,
    starting with Windows Server 2012 the "Windows System Resource Manager" is deprecated. What is the new functionality we can leverage on to achive the tasks managed by the old WSRM?
    I plan to deploy Windows Server 2012R2 and I need some memory / CPU management

    Hello,
    We too agree with you 'Windows System Resource Manager (WSRM) is deprecated. Similar functionality is provided by Hyper-V."

  • System Resource Management

    I am trying to do display a graphic message something for a certain amount of time(eg:5 minutes). I do it this way
    int timediff = 0;
    Date d1 = new Date();
    long timeSwitched = d1.getTime();
    while(timediff!=5*60*1000)
    Date d2 = new Date();
    long nowTime = d2.getTime();
    timediff =(int)((nowTime-timeSwitched) /1000)
    d2 = null;
    This procedure seems to take away 100% of resources. I am sure there is a better way to do this which I can't think of. Does anybody have better suggestions.
    Thank You.

    You want your program to do nothing for 5 minutes, instead of checking the clock continuously? Use the Thread.sleep() method.

  • Virtualised Multi-Instance SQL Server Cluster - Processor Resource Management

    Hi - We're in the process of implementing a multi-instance SQL 2014 guest cluster on Windows 2012 R2.  To our dismay, it seems that Windows System Resource Manager (WSRM) is deprecated in Windows 2012 R2, so we're now stuck for how best to manage CPU usage
    between SQL instances....
    As far as I can see, I'm left with two options, but both of these have problems:
    1) Use SQL Processor affinity within the guest cluster, with each SQL instance assigned to dedicated v-CPU.  However, I'm not certain that setting SQL Processor affinity within a VM will actually have the desired affect!?..
    - When there is physical CPU capacity available, I'd hope Hyper-V would provide it to whichever v-CPU is demanding it.
    - When VM processor demand exceeds the physical CPU capacity, I'd hope the SQL instances would receive a proportion of the physical CPU time according to the number of v-CPU(s) assigned through the affinity settings.
    2) Use a VM (actually 2, because its a 2-node guest cluster) per SQL instance!..  This is not ideal, as we need multiple SQL instances and it would result in have an administrative and performance overhead
    Does anyone have any information or thoughts on this?  How can we manage a virtualised multi-instance SQL deployment now that WSRM has been deprecated?  Help me please!

    I'm not sure what are the requirements for each of the 2 VMs in in the SQL guest cluster.
    I'm assuming the guest cluster resides on a Hyper-V CSV with at least 2 Hyper-V hosts, and the 2 VMs are configured with Anti-affinity to ensure they never reside on the same Hyper-V host.
    I've been able to configure CPU resources to VMs from the standard controls in Hyper-V Manager:

    Hi,
    When we schedule a new job, we add a scheduled task to the c:\windows\tasks folder.
    The scheduled task will contain the following command line
    "c:\WINDOWS\system32\storrept.exe reports generate /scheduled /Task:"FSRM_Report_Task{GUID.......}"
    There is also a folder on the system drive
    C:\StorageReports\Scheduled
    We Also store information in the system volume information folder in the following files:
    c:\system Volume Information\SRM\Settings\ReportSettings.xml (we use .old and .alt extentions}
    c:\system Volume Information\SRM\reports\reportX.xml (where X = an incrementing number set, in writing to these files, we also use .old and .alt extentions}
    When experiencing issues relating to scheduled report jobs, you will want to examine these files and check for NTFS permissions issues on these locations also.
    Make sure you check the volume that you will be running the report on.

  • How to configure ex90 for use with polycom resource manager GAB

    My customer has a Polycom infrastructure, including using Resource Manager for the GAB server. I also have several Cisco endpoints deployed (EX90 and C40) and I need to get these units configured to use the GAB. Polycom documentation sucks and only says:
    1. At the endpoint, enter the information required for directory set up including the Polycom Global Address Book/RealPresence Resource Manager system IP address and the path.
    For example, http://<RPRM_IP_ADDRESS>/TMS/Public/external/phonebook/PhoneBookService.asmx.
    To do this on Cisco endpoints, go to System Configuration> Phone Book Server.
    2. Wait for the connections to take effect
    When I go to the EX90 phone book server setup page, I only have ID, Type and URL fields. The type field has a drop down that only has Cisco options available (VCS, TMS, Callway and CUCM)
    No matter what combination I use, I haven't been able to get the EX90 to pickup the Polycom directory.
    Any suggestions? Thanks

    What happens when you try that URL (http://<RPRM_IP_ADDRESS>/TMS/Public/external/phonebook/PhoneBookService.asmx) from a Web Browser - do you see anything, or get an error?
    You'll need to make sure that's accessible first before trying to configure your endpoints to use it.

  • RH8 hangs with 100% CPU when closing a topic. Resource Manager to blame?

    Please refer to the following thread for background information: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/734972?tstart=0
    I'm re-listing this issue, as it has rasied its ugly head again, and I've no resolution this time.
    Summary:
    The original issue was that RH8 would hang whenever I closed a topic for anywhere between 15-30 seconds before allowing me to interact with the application again. Attempting to interact with the GUI during this freeze would result in the 'Not Responding' message at the upper-left of the application window (suffice it to say I'm on a PC with Windows).
    After much investigation it was suggested to me that my profile may be corrupt, and in order to test this, another user should log on and see whether they experienced the same problem. As it is, they did not. So I had my Systems Admin recreate my domain profile, and everything worked just fine.
    ...until now.
    Last week we all upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 (32 bit). We also changed our anti-virus software. The awful hanging issue in RH has returned.
    We've attempted the solution from last time, by recreating my profile on the domain, to no avail. We have in fact gone to the extent of reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows, the anti-virus software and RH8 (plus all available patches) from scratch. In case anyone is wondering, we've tried running RH without the antivirus installed, and when installed have also tried excluding the RH application folder and all my project folders, just in case it was the anti-virus software at fault. Regardless, the RH problem exists.
    I can't understand why I'm now having this problem. Truth be told, I never really understood why recreating my domain profile in the first place resolved the problem last time.
    However, I have now discovered something else...
    In my RH Resource Manager I have a few thousand images in the Image folder. Not much I can do about this - the applications I write Help for have many screens users can access, and I write the Help for half a dozen applications. When I delete the contents of the images folder within the Resources Manager, RH works perfectly - no hanging whatsoever. As soon as I import the images into this folder again, the hanging is back. I have tested this a few times now, and have rebooted and had another user log on to confirm, and it happens every time. I'm dumbfounded of course, particularly because the same set of images has been sitting in the Resource Manager for months (since my original post about this issue, last year), and RH has been working perfectly.
    I've also tried Peter Grainge's suggestion to create an empty BaseCSS_res.dll file (http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/rh8/using_rh8.htm), but as I've installed all the RH8 updates, this shouldn't be an issue.
    I've also tried deleting the CPD file without success.
    Thanks in advance.

    It seems this has been resolved!
    Many thanks for all the suggestions. Peter ultimately forwarded the solution - something that he'd sourced from a rep at Adobe, as follows:
    Every file/folder change in the root folder of RH8 Resource Manager triggers a rescan of all the sub-folder/files. That is why in case of thousand image it will take time. Like xxxx said we may ask user for root folder, it should not be project folder or frequently changing folder.
    Probably he is using the default path given in the root folder and RoboHelp changes a temporary css file in that folder very frequently, in fact with every topic close.
    That is causing the slowness and it should be easy to reproduce in the default scenario. This is RH8 only issue.
    So, to fix my issue:
    Open the Resource Manager Pod.
    Click the Add/Edit Categories icon. The Add/Edit Categories window appears.
    Within this window, change the 'Root Folder' path to something other than the default. In my case, I create a new folder on my root hard drive, outside of the Robohelp folder, just to be sure.
    So far this is working perfectly - no 'hanging'. I'll keep an eye on it.
    I love the comment "This is RH8 only issue."
    Oh?! Is it? Was it fixed in a patch, Adobe? Please don't tell me that it was fixed in RH9, because there's no way known I should have to pay for an upgrade to resolve something that certainly looks like a bug. As happy and grateful I am to have this resolved, it has cost me a week's work.

  • DATABASE RESOURCE MANAGER ( ORACLE 8I NEW FEATURE )

    제품 : ORACLE SERVER
    작성날짜 : 2004-08-16
    DATABASE RESOURCE MANAGER ( ORACLE 8I NEW FEATURE )
    ===================================================
    SCOPE
    8i~10g Standard Edition 에서는 Database Resource Manager 를 지원하지 않는다.
    Explanation
    Database Resource Manager란 OS에서 제공하는 자원 (예 : CPU 자원 )에 대해 DB
    차원에서 계획을 세워, 세부 관리를 할 수 있도록 해 주는 서비스이다.
    예를 들어 주간에 batch 작업을 처리하더라도, OLTP 업무에는 지장을 주지 않아야
    할 경우 batch 작업에 CPU 자원을 적게 할당해 주는 것이 바람직 하며, Resource
    Manager를 활용하여 CPU 자원을 batch 작업과 OLTP 업무에 서로 다르게 할당해 줄
    수 있다. ( Oracle 8.1.6 까지는 Resouurce Manager에서 CPU 자원에 대해서만
    관리만 가능하다 )
    1. 용어
    1) Resource Consumer Group
    사용자 session들의 집합. Resource에 대한 요구사항에 따라 나뉘어진 그룹.
    2) Resource Plan
         Consumer Group에 자원을 할당 해 주기 위한 resource plan directive들을
    포함.
    3) Resource Allocation Method
         Resource Manager에서 자원을 할당해 주는 방법/정책.
    4) Resource Plan Directive
         Resource Plan에 대해 자원을 할당해 주는 세부 내역.
    2. Resource Consumer Group
    * 기본 group
         [ 사용자가 삭제, 수정할 수 없는 group ]
         OTHER_GROUPS : active plan schema에 속하지 않는 consumer group의 모든
    session
         DEFAULT_CONSUMER_GROUP : consumer group을 지정하지 않은 모든
    session.(default)
         [ 기본적으로 제공되나 사용자가 삭제하거나 변경할 수 있는 group ]
         SYS_GROUP : SYSTEM_PLAN에 대한 high priority consumer group
    SYSTEM, SYS user에 할당한다.
         LOW_GROUP : SYSTEM_PLAN에 대한 low priority consumer group
    3. Resource Plan
         Consumer group에 속하는 session들은 해당 group에 대한 resource plan에
    따라 자원 할당이 결정되며, 자원 할당에 대한 세부 사항은 resource plan에
    대한 resource plan directive에서 지정된다.
         Resource plan은 subplan을 둘 수 있다.
    4. Resource Allocation Method
         Round-robin Method : Consumer group 내에서 session들에 대한 CPU 할당
         Emphasis Method : Consumer group에 할당되는 CPU
         Absolute Method : Parallel degree 한계 ( 예 : Parallel Query에서의
    degree )
    5. Resource Plan Directive
         Resource Plan Directive에 지정된 내용들은 resource plan에 따라
    consumer group에 자원을 할당할 때 반영된다.
    6. 구현 예제
         MYDB PLAN +-> MAILDB PLAN +-> POSTMAN GROUP (40% Level 1)
         | (30% Level 1) |
         | +-> USERS GROUP (80% Level 2)
         | |
         | +-> MAILMAINT GROUP (20% Level 2)
         | |
         | +-> OTHER GROUP (100% Level 3)
         |
         +-> BUGDB PLAN  +-> ONLINE GROUP (80% Level 1)
         (70% Level 1) |
         +-> BATCH GROUP (20% Level 1)
         |
         +-> BUGMAINT GROUP (100% Level 2)
         |
         +-> OTHER GROUP (100% Level 3)
         위 예에서 MYDB PLAN에는 2개의 subplan ( MAILDB PLAN, BUGDB PLAN )이
         있으며 각각 30%와 70%의 CPU 자원을 할당하였다.
         Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 는 우선순위 레벨을 의미하며, 하나의
         resource plan에서 동일한 level의 합이 100%를 넘지 못한다.
         ( Level 은 1부터 8까지 지정할 수 있으며 level 1이 가장 우선순위가
         높으며 level 8이 가장 우선순위가 낮다 )
         예를 들어 전체 CPU 자원의 70%를 할당 받은 BUGDB PLAN은 다시
         ONLINE GROUP과 BATCH GROUP을 두고 있는데, 이 둘의 Level이 모두 1이며
         두개의 percentage의 합이 100%이다. 하지만, 즉, level 1인 ONLINE GROUP
    에 90%를 할당하였다면, level 1인 BATCH GROUP에는 10% 이상을 할당할 수
    없다.
    Example
         * 구현을 위한 코드
         BEGIN
         /* PLAN schema 작업 영역 생성 */
         DBMS_RESOURCE_MANAGER.CREATE_PENDING_AREA();
         /* BUGDB PLAN, MAILDB PLAN, MYDB PLAN 생성 */

  • Verity vspider.exe process never stops and sucks system resources

    I'm running a scheduled task to index a site on a Win2k3 server running CF8. I'm having a problem where the vspider.exe process never stops and sucks up system resources, slowing my whole server down. It actually is doing quite a bit of work... I'm directing the output into a log file, and I'm getting 300 K of information and it seems to be walking the site just fine. But it ends up not finishing the job and running forever. I have to open the task manager to terminate the process and then the server runs better.
    Any ideas?

    I have not found an answer to this problem, though it hasn't been a problem lately. I now send the output of the vspider.exe process to a log file and can check the status of the index job. I index nightly, so if the process is running at anytime, I can look at the results of the index job in my log file. This might give some clues. I have a feeling I had a corrupt index and vspider was choking. Try rebuilding your index from scratch.

  • MQSeries as a Transactional Resource Manager with Weblogic Server

              I am trying to setup the example given in the BEA white paper:
              Using MQSeries as a Transactional Resource Manager with Weblogic Server.
              Version 1.
              October 25, 2001.
              I followed the instructions given in the documents, but when i run client program
              >java MQClient t3://localhost:7001 "MQSeries test"
              I received the following exception below. Does anyone how what is the reason for
              this exception(s) and how i can solve the problem? My MQSeries Server and Weblogic
              6.1 sp2 are installed on seperate NT machines. I installed the MQSeries classes
              for java and the MQSeries classes for Java Message Service on the weblogic

    The point is that over TCPIP the MQ XA connection factory is not available.
              The MQ shared memory/JNI driver is required to access it, which limits
              access to those processes that are on the same box as the MQ q manager.
              This is an MQ series limitation.

  • BEA-141230 Could Not locate descriptor file for System Resource: DS name

    Guys,
    When I start the Admin and Managed server ..I get below warning message.
    *<Warning> <Management> <BEA-141230> <Could Not locate descriptor file for System Resource : datasource1.>*
    I know that weblogic server is unable to locatie datasource1.xml file at <SOA_HOME>/user_projects/domains/base_domain/config/jdbc
    Is there any way to to get rid off from this error? I tried to delete datasource from weblogic Admin console, but get below error:
    java.lang.NullPointerException
    All changes have been activated. No restarts are necessary.
    Errors were encountered while performing this delete operation.
    Thanks,
    Ab

    Are you starting servers with the root user? make sure that using whichever user you are starting server, it has full access on MW_Home and it's sub-directories. You may consider raising a support SR.

  • [823] [HY000] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The operating system returned error 1450(Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.) to SQL Server.

    Hi,
    I am facing an issue while loading fresh data into SQL server database.
    we are able to load data into staging area, but while processing stored procedures system face bellow error message :
    [823] [HY000] [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]The operating system returned error 1450(Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.) to SQL Server during a write at offset 0x00000243bd0000 in file 'E:\SQLDB\DBName.mdf'.
    Additional messages in the SQL Server error log and system event log may provide more detail. This is a severe system-level error condition that threatens database integrity and must be corrected immediately. Complete a full database consistency check (DBCC
    CHECKDB). This error can be caused by many factors; for more information, see SQL Server Books Online.
    we use windows 2008 R2 with SQL server managment studio 2008.
    Appreciate your suggestion.
    Thanks in advance.
    Best Regards,

    Hi Manorath,
    Based on my research, this issue can be occurred in the following scenarios:
    You are running a DBCC command on a large database. For example, you are running the DBCC CHECKDB statement on the database. At the same time, you run many DML statements on the database.
    You create a database snapshot for a large database. At the same time, you are running many DML statements on the database.
    In these scenarios, the SQL Server service stops responding. The DBCC CHECK statement is never completed, and you receive the error message repeatedly.
    This issue occurs because the sparse file for a database snapshot file has exceeded the file size limitation in NTFS file system. When the operating system error 1450 occurs, SQL Server enters an infinite retry loop.
    To fix this issue, please download and install Cumulative update package 1 for SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. Besides, because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous
    SQL Server 2008 fix release. We recommend that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix.
