System Restore from TM with Windows on Bootcamp

I have a question about using TM to do a system restore.  I have a MBP Mid 2010 running OS X 10.9 with 8GB RAM.  I have a 500GB HD with 260GB free space.  Boot camp partition is 35GB with 17GB free. I have Windows XP installed on a Boot Camp Partition. I use Windows to run one program for work about once a week so I must keep it.   I have current TM backups.  I have never done a system restore on this system.
In the past week my system has slowed down to a crawl.  Activity monitor shows I am using 7.99 GB of RAM. After boot it is using 5GB but within minutes it is at the 8GB. I cannot seem to find the culprit that is slowing my system down.  So I am wondering if doing a System Restore will fix the problem.
Questions...
Will a system restore from TM fix the issue or will it restore the problem?
Can I restore just the Mac partition w/o affecting the Boot Camp partition? (I no longer have the Windows CD
If I restore from TM can I choose to not restore certain Apps that I no longer use or should I just drag those to the trash?
If restore is an option, should I erase the MAC partition before doing the restore? Will this leave the boot camp partition in tact?
Should I erase the entire HD, Restore from TM, Make a Boot Camp partiton, purchase a new Windows CD and install?
Any help and direction you can provide is greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much,
Dale

Wow, I just went to check exactly when my last back-up was and go ahead with a new one, and I see that in the drop down TM menu it has grayed out "Time Machine Not Configured," which I guess is no surprise since my whole machine was messed up and I had to do the A&I Monday night (not saving user settings). Not sure what this means, but when it comes time to do the disk erase/system restore, I will need to have some communication there. Hmmm. No problem with my MBP accessing the external. Not sure if this constitutes a new problem...

  • Is there a way to system restore from Bios on Windows 8.1?

    Hello,
We just bought a Dell Venue 11 running 8.1, after a few hours of use the user forgot the password (or mistyped it when they changed it) and now we can't get back in. I wanted to know if there was a way to rollback the tablet without having access to Control
Panel. Any other thoughts about getting us back into this tablet is appreciated as well.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
If you've forgotten your Windows password, there are several ways to retrieve or reset it:
•If your PC is on a domain, your system administrator must reset your password.
•If you're using a Microsoft account, you can reset your password online.
•If you're using a local account, use your password hint as a reminder.
If you've tried these suggestions and still can't sign in:
    • If you have Windows 8.1, you'll need to reinstall Windows.
    • If you have Windows RT 8.1, you'll need to contact your PC manufacturer.

  • Mozilla apps won't load after System Restore from TM

Alas, a hard disk failure which Apple kindly replaced even though It happened 25 days out of 3-year AppleCare. Thanks!
New hard disk installed, proceeded to do System restore from TimeMachine and everything went perfectly (as far as I can tell) EXCEPT Firefox and Thunderbird. All the other apps are loading and seem to be working as I would expect (I guess I won't know for sure until I've worked for a few days) but Firefox will not load - the icon bounces in the dock for a couple of seconds and then disappears. Out of curiosity, I tired to load Thunderbird (which I seldom use) and not even the icon appears.
    I am using OS-X 10.5.7 with Firefox 3.0.11
I have tried deleting the apps and the associated files in Library?Application Support and doing a re-install from a fresh download - same result. I tired restoring the apps from TimeMachine using a restore date one day before the HardDisk failure. Same result. I have used MacTuneUp to repair permission. Same result.
Any ideas why this is happening? I am most surprised that a fresh install didn't help. And it's interesting that two Mozilla apps are affected. I can live without Thunderbird but Firefox is important as there are some websites that still refuse to open with Safari.

    [email protected] wrote:
OK - that was a good suggestion. Firefox and Thunderbird both work when I log is as a guest. Now what should I be looking for on my main account that is blocking the apps from opening? Thanks for the help.
probably something in their preferences. the most radical thing would be to delete the whole folders /users/usernmae/library/application support/firefox and /users/username/library/thunderbird. or just move those folders to the desktop. then try starting firefox and thunderbird. however, that will wipe all user info in both apps.

  • Will a system restore from Time Machine erase any of the data that is currently on the Mac and not in the Time Machine?

We had a lot of data on our Mac (i.e. photos, iTunes libraries etc) which we backed up via Time Machine. The hard disk corrupted so we had to get it wiped. When we got it back, my parents started using the mac as per usual but they didn't do a full System Restore from Time Machine. So, if I do a full restore now, will it erase any of the new photos, musc etc that is currently on the mac?

The Time Machine restore will only restore what is on Time Machine.  Making a clone is probably a better means of ensuring whatever data you want recovered gets recovered together with Time Machine.
Generally speaking, applications that are newer than the operating system from Apple that are included with the operating system are not supported.  So in your data recovery process from your clone, you'll have to be careful what data you choose to copy back.

  • IMac won't reboot after system restore from Time Machine

I just installed a wacom intuos pro tablet on my imac running snow leopard. The system clock reset to 1st Jan2000 and system prefenerces were no longer accesible. I performed a system restore from my time machine but now can't reboot. The restore completed succesfully (or so the it told me). When i restarted the imac i got the usual 'bing' followed by grey screen and spinning wheel swiftly followed by a light blue screen with the cursor in the top left hand corner.
There is sat for an hour befoe I switched off and tried again......same result.
The installation disc is still in the optical drive.
Any advice please on how to remidy this?
    Thanks

I have/had a similiar problem. What I did was reset the SMC and PRAM.  You can also do a safe boot. For the PRAM, I had to do three times, and my computer finally booted up. Afterwards I verified my disk and repaired my permissions. So far so good. I guessing that Spotlight needed to re-index the system.

  • System Restore from USB - problems

I just switched HDD with another macbook (a 2,1) and it works fine, now my HDD is in the 3,1 body. There was freezing from the off so I decided to restore (from USB - Snow Leopard) the system from time machine to nip any problems early on. The restore finished correctly, i reset, and it hasn't booted since. All I see is the Apple logo and the circular rotating 'busy' icon.
I checked my external HD on a different system to see if it had been corrupted - it hadn't.
SO I don't know what to do now. I think trying to restore again would make sense, but i'm not sure, and I cannot find how to access the restore USB either.
    Any advice or suggestions?

I restored from a liveUSB which I made,
    How did you make it?
thinking that it would have the same functionality as my original DVD however I don't know how to boot direct from USB so thats a problem.
See [Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310].
When I restored I did did a full system restore from my last time machine backup - however I realised yesterday that this final backup was made on the system after I switched the HDDs so would just have compounded any errors already there. I should have restored from the last fully working backup, which was the one before that.
However this was onto a new machine, so you could be onto something there. I would like to re-format the HDD and then try to install from the last working backup however as the macbook does not now boot, and I have no CD to hand (waiting for that to get sent over here) looks like I am stuck for the time being.
    Is this a fair assessment?
    Maybe.
Both macbooks were running 10.6.6 the only differnce between being one is a 2,1 and the other a 3,1 version.
If they were both on 10.6.6, unless one was brand new (and might have been on a different build of 10.6.6), the problem isn't the wrong version of OSX.
It may be that a different Mac's backups were restored, but that usually doesn't cause such severe problems, especially on similar Macs. See [Mac OS X v10.6: Issues after restoring a Mac from a Time Machine backup made with a different Mac|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3243]. As noted there, the fix is to simply reinstall OSX from the correct disc, but you can't do that yet, either.

  • System Restore does not work (Windows 7)

I believe that my internal wireless network card has died although the laptop is only 8 months old, but that's another issue.
I'm running Windows 7, and I tried to have system restore backup to a few days ago.  There have been no changes to the computer in this time other than Windows update. After performing system restore and rebooting, I have a message that system restore was cancelled because there was a file in use.  It suggested I disable anti-virus protection.  After disabling that, I tried system restore once again.  The computer seemed to be doing it right, but after reboot, I got the same message that it could not be performed due to a file in use.
I've turned off everything I can think of, does anybody know why might be causing system restore to stop and how it could be corrected?
    Thanks

If you cannot do a System Restore from the Recovery Environment (as Archie suggested), then probably the restore points have become corrupt. That's not uncommon.
To repair that, turn System Restore off and then on again. Unfortunately, that removes all the previous restore points.
Turn System Restore on or off
If you post again, tell us which computer you have.

  • System Restore DVDs Vista vs Windows 7

I am brand new here and I appologize if this has been asked before.  I looked around and tried searching but did not find my answer.
I just reveived my new HP Pavillion dv7t last night.  The Notebook Essentials booklet says to create a set of System Restore DVDs, but that this can only be done one time.  I am in the process if registering for the upgrade to Windows 7 snce it is due out in less than week.
Should I go ahead and create the System Restore DVD set with the Vista OS, and if I do will I then be able to create another System Restore DVD set for the Windows 7?
I would like to make sure I have a System Restore based on both of the operating systems in case I need to go back to Vista, but still have a System Restore for Windows 7 if it proves stable and I like the OS.
    I hope this makes sense...
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Make your Vista Recovery DVD's. Two reasons...
1.you won't be able to make a Win 7 Recovery set, (unless HP offers some magic here).
2.if you install Win 7 and later need to reinstall it you will have to start over with Vista installation and do the upgrade process again (unless HP's version of upgrade works differently than retail version...haven't gotten an answer on that one).
Of course you could always use an Imaging app to make an image of the freshly installed Win 7 to use in the event of a reinstall.Acronis True Image or Macrium Reflect are 2 good choices.Macrium is my preference.

  • Downloads folder missing after system restore from Time Machine

I installed a new HDD, installed Leopard, and the did a system restore from Time Machine. Everything seems to work fine except from a big question mark in the dock, where downloads folder should be. Any suggestions pls?

Thank you very much for your quick answers.
Probably the problem originated from excluding the Downloads folder from my backup, although it should have been there in my new installation. The interesting thing was that this folder were nowhere to be found in the Finder, and by trying to download something from Safari, it just wouldn’t.
I did a Repair Permissions from the HDD, not the Leopard DVD, and all came back to normal.
I have to admit, that coming from The Win world, this HDD replacement was the easiest and fastest ever, by far!

  • Unable to Load Windows After System Restore from BIOS freeze

I have a pavilion G6 that froze after a BIOS Update ran. Here's what happened and here is what I did:
Uninstalled HP printer software; upon reboot, BIOS Update appeared and ran.
Upon reboot, Win 7 froze @ Welcome screen.
I was instructed this am on this forum to press F8 and do a system restore, which I did.
This appeared to work until about 30 mins ago when it began freezing again and opening to Safe Mode screen.
    Now what??

    Hi
    Workaround:
There are few steps that has worked for few but not always..
Restart and tap F2.  F2  will show an option “BIOS Management” . Select BIOS Management and then select “Roll Over to the previous BIOS”
BIOS Management option will not be available if the system do not have HP_Tools partition installed or if it is deleted.
Fix if BIOS Management is not available
    i)                    Press and Hold the Windows Key and B key at the same time when the system is turned off or follow the steps from this link: Recovering the BIOS using key press combination
iii)                 Shutdown the Notebook. Remove the Hard Drive and then turn the computer ON and tap F10 to load BIOS. If it loads BIOS then it should rollback to previous BIOS or it might show a black screen. Just leave the system ON for about 2-3 mins and turn it on with the hard drive and check.
If none of the above worked then most likely we need to bench the notebook as system will not boot from recovery discs.
Let us know how it goes!

  • System Restore from Time Machine Back up and Mail

    Hi
I have around 16,000 Messages in my Mail 3.2 Inbox. I use Gmail IMAP service. One thing I like about Mail is that next to all my messages there are these arrows that indicate whether I have replied to or forwarded a particular message and clicking on them takes me to my response to a particular email.
I need to reformat my MBP HD and want to do a system restore through Time Machine.
My question is, will Mail return to my current state (with all the arrows and tags) after I do the complete restore from Time Machine.
Any help on this is highly appreciated.
    Cheers!

I replaced the internal because I need more space, I'm not an expert, but I've done it before. I wasn't having trouble I was just running out of room and decided to upgrade?
Ah, ok, that rules that out.
I think it wasn't backing up because it was showing I had files on the external but I couldn't locate them. It's my understanding that the external must be blank to back your computer up with time machine.
No, it doesn't have to be empty (although Time Machine works best if it has its own, exclusive space).  Without the error message(s), we don't know what is/was wrong.
I have run the Verify Disk on the internal and it says its all good.
Ah, good.  That means you don't have directory problems.
I have not run a Repair Disk Permissions. I am not sure how to do that? Is that also located in the Disk Utility.
    Yup, same window, different button.
I tried to just run the update from the update software option in the apple on the top left. I also then ran the combo that I downloaded from the apple site.
With what results?  Did they compete?  If not, what message did you get?

  • Will a 10 point touchscreen work as well on a mac with windows 8 (Bootcamp) as it would on a normal PC?

I'm just on the verge of purchasing a touchscreen monitor and a Mac Mini and installing Windows 8 using Bootcamp. I was just wondering if anybody knows how well supported Windows 8 is on Macs?
I have a Macbook Air with Windows 7 and it runs exactly as it would on any other Windows only laptop, but I wondered if this will be the case with Windows 8 as it's a newer OS, especially the touch control?
I would use windows 8 75% of the time and specifically rely on the touchscreen interface so I would really need the touchscreen to be flawless while in Windows 8. Alternatively the monitor I'm looking at can be purchased as an all in one but I'd really prefer the Mac Mini for the awesomeness of Apple Care and to have the best of both worlds as far as OS's are concerned.
Any info or advice from anyone that's using Windows 8 with Bootcamp and specifically with a touchscreen monitor would be awesome!

http://www.trolltouch.com/ is probably your best bet as they made their software for all operating systems.

  • USB ports don't work after resuming from standby with Windows 8 on X230 tablet

I have just done a clean install of Windows 8 on my X230 tablet.  Before installing Windows 8 I installed the most recent BIOS for this machine (version 2.50).  After installing Windows 8 I installed System Update from the Lenovo Website and downloaded all the recommended drivers and other files.  I've also installed all the latest Windows 8 updates.
Here are the symptoms of my problem: After resuming from standby/sleep mode, my USB ports do not work.  My computer has two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.0 ports.  All exhibit the same behavior.  After resuming from standby mode I have tried inserting both my mouse and a USB thumbdrive, but neither are recognized.  After restarting Windows, the USB ports work again... until I resume from standby mode again.
I hope there is a solution to this issue.  It is very frustrating.

Thanks for the suggestion about tweaking the "Allow this computer to turn off this device" feature.  I un-checked that box for every entry I could find under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" in the Devide Manager.  Unfortunately, the same symptoms of my problem persisted.
I went back and looked at the README file associated with the BIOS 2.50 download on Lenvo's support site.  At the bottom of the file it gives a "Summary of Changes".  Under version 2.03 of the BIOS (the version just before version 2.50), it says:
    - (Fix) Fixed an issue where USB device might not detected when system resume from sleep mode.
This indicates that Lenovo support was already aware of such issues.  The problem was intended to be fixed in version 2.03 of the BIOS.  However, the issue persists on my machine, even with the latest BIOS.
Hopefully someone from Lenovo can comment here.

  • DVD optical drive no longer works with Windows under bootcamp or parallels

For some strange reason, the DVD optical drive- Optiarc 5680 on my 27" iMac, no longer works anymore with Windows under Parallels or Bootcamp. It used to work perfectly fine before, but now it just shows up with a yellow exclamation mark under Device Manager and Code 39 "Windows cannot load the device driver..."
The DVD drive continues to still work fine with OSX. But it won't work anymore under Windows via Parallels or bootcamp, despite trying to uninstall the optical device drivers, update, reinstall, etc. Anybody else experiencing this or have any ideas?

Finally found the solution for anybody else who runs into this problem. It was solved by doing a registry mod in Windows from this site:
    http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
described in “My CD drives have vanished (from Explorer, Device Manager, etc.)”
After applying the registry changes the DVD optical drive worked instantly again with Windows....sigh...guess I can't blame the Mac on this one.
