System Restore on Helix after 8.1

I installed the Windows 8.1 preview on my Helix and would like to go back to the Lenovo build of WIndows 8. When I hit enter from bootup and go into recovery, I only receive the option to do a clean install of 8.1.
How can I rebuild my machine with the Lenovo Windows 8 build? My Helix came documentation free (and no license key on the unit.)
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I updated my Helix last week with the Windows 8.1 Pro RTM via my TechNet subscription. I used the recovery tools in Windows 8.1 to start fresh thinking it would take me back to 8.1 Pro. But what happened was it took me back to the Lenovo Windows 8.0 Pro as if I just took my Helix out of its shipping box. Which is where you're headed.
My reason for wanting to try a fresh Windows 8.1 install was due to the Lenovo Solution Center not behaving properly (missing the upper right X to close it) and the Lenovo System Update not able to run at all. Nor could I install it again - it would begin installing, offer to keep my logs of previous updates, but then the "Next" button after accepting the license agreement to start the actual install, did nothing - install window just sat there as if the button hadn't been pushed. I called support for help and was told at that time (last week) that Lenovo considered 8.1 a new operating system and that my call was out-of-scope - my Helix was shipped with 8.0 not 8.1. They connected to my Helix and got to the point to begin the install and the "Next" button didn't work for them either.
I'm thinking the uniqueness of Microsoft's new faster Windows release cadence and in-place updating hasn't filtered down through support personnel just yet. It's not a new OS version like going from Win7 to Win8. So I accepted their offer to send me an 8.0 re-install disk-set (that I can't really use - no USB DVD Burner with which to boot just yet) and I'd just wait for a few months for the hundreds of Helix owners to have updated their devices to 8.1, support employees trained and a company-wide "YES" to 8.1 becomes the conclusion. I'm still hopeful Lenovo will not only support 8.1 but will develop any new drivers needed in advance of the public release next year when 8.2 is released and so on. I'm not holding my breath though. It just that 8.1 is just so much better, it'd be a real shame if I can't run it fully my existing Helix.
I completed re-configuring my original Windows 8.0 programs again, but with new versions of both the Solution Center and System Update. I tried the 8.1 update again, with a slight improvement of Solution Center (the X was present, but many of the program features didn't work). And the System Update still wouldn't run or re-install and the same problem with the "Next" button broken. I figured it as a long-shot, but wanted to at least try to get the 8.1 features on it. Now I'm back to 8.0 again and in waiting mode with fingers crossed.
Have you been doing with your experiments with 8.1?

  • System restore broken right after recovery

I just did a recovery on my X1 laptop. I put the recovery on a USB stick before I did the reinstall. I noticed my system restore was not working. It would say it would work, but no restore points are found.
When I first went to the System Restore properties, there were two C: drives. It was enabled on the one listed as (MISSING), and disabled on the one with the Windows logo. I attempted to enable on the proper drive and got it they way it should be like so:
Now when I try to create a restore point I get this error:
Everything I have found says to do a "Repair" on Windows 7. I can't even do that since all I have is the OEM recovery media. But if I re-image, I will be in the same boat as I am in now. I find system restore to be a huge asset and use it all the time. I am stumped on what I can do to make it work.

For whatever it's worth,  this happens to me everytine I do a restore from an image. All I do is to select the C drive that is missing and and turn off the restore function. Then I select the remaining C drive and enable the restore function and everything is then normal until I do another restore. I don't know  why it does it but I think it's something screwy with Win7 getting confused with drives before the drivers are loaded.

  • I completed a System Restore on my iPhone 3g and itunes screwed up (URGENT)

I was having major technical issues involving really bad lag and random blackouts.
So, I tried to do a system restore. Before itunes would let me do anything, I was required to do an update. After I updated, I proceeded to do the system restore. Finally after the restore process ended, my iPhone restarted and there was no data on it. On iTunes, it recognized my iPhone as "Unknown".
I have a feeling that when iTunes updates it deletes (or at least, doesn't automatically backup your device info).
Is there a certain folder (on windows vista 32bit home premium) that contains all of the old itunes data even for iPhones and other devices that I can access and manually put back into iTunes?
Please help, this is extremely urgent.

  • HT1222 I installed the most recent ITunes update after which Itunes no longer worked.. I received an error message   Error 7  Windows 193.  I did a system restore to eliminate the update.

Apple support had not responded to my requests for clarification.  The update corrupted both ITunes and Office Outlook mobileme.  The error message when I tried to start up I Tunes was Error 7 Windows 193.  I un installed I Tunes and re installed the latest ver and encountered the same error message.  I finally did a system restore.  Was this a one time problem or is the update bad.  In over 30 years I'd never had a problem with any Apple update.

  • Unable to Load Windows After System Restore from BIOS freeze

I have a pavilion G6 that froze after a BIOS Update ran. Here's what happened and here is what I did:
Uninstalled HP printer software; upon reboot, BIOS Update appeared and ran.
Upon reboot, Win 7 froze @ Welcome screen.
I was instructed this am on this forum to press F8 and do a system restore, which I did.
This appeared to work until about 30 mins ago when it began freezing again and opening to Safe Mode screen.
    Now what??

    Hi
    Workaround:
There are few steps that has worked for few but not always..
Restart and tap F2.  F2  will show an option “BIOS Management” . Select BIOS Management and then select “Roll Over to the previous BIOS”
BIOS Management option will not be available if the system do not have HP_Tools partition installed or if it is deleted.
Fix if BIOS Management is not available
    i)                    Press and Hold the Windows Key and B key at the same time when the system is turned off or follow the steps from this link: Recovering the BIOS using key press combination
iii)                 Shutdown the Notebook. Remove the Hard Drive and then turn the computer ON and tap F10 to load BIOS. If it loads BIOS then it should rollback to previous BIOS or it might show a black screen. Just leave the system ON for about 2-3 mins and turn it on with the hard drive and check.
If none of the above worked then most likely we need to bench the notebook as system will not boot from recovery discs.
Let us know how it goes!

  • After Effects CS5.5 Error Rendering known clean project even after Reinstall and after System Restore

I've been getting frequent, but not consistent, errors during rendering AE CS5.5 projects with lots of 3D layers and lights. I have gone back to a known clean project to confirm the issue isn't with a particular project. The error is usually an error invoking the advanced 3D render engine. This is sometimes followed by a bad tracked memory id popup. But sometimes the program just hangs up.
    My System:
    i7 [email protected]
    24GB RAM
    Windows 7 professional 64 bit SP1
    NVidia Geforce GTX 570
I have trashed the preferences, cleaned the cache, turned off rendering multiple frames, deleted Open GL, updated the graphics card drivers and even tried reverting to old graphics card drivers. Window's Memory Diagnostic Tool didn't find any problems. System File Checker Tool didn't find any corrupt files. My system drive is not fragmented.  I have reinstalled AE, reinstalled all of CS5.5, and did a system restore to a known working point (both with and without doing the Windows updates that have occurred since the restore point). None of this fixed the problem.
I have tried the script BG Renderer to render in the background. I have consistently gotten the following error running the script, which I'm hoping will be a clue:
"aerender ERROR An existing connection was forcible closed by the remote host.
:Unable to receive at line 314
aerender ERROR: After Effects can not render for aerender. Another instance of aerender, or another script, may be running; or, AE may be waiting for a response from a modal dialog, or for a render to complete. Try running aerender without the - reuse flag to invoke a separate instance of After Effects."
The first two times I tried to render with BG Renderer, the error came right after closing AE. But I still got the same error if I left AE open and just sat and watched.
    Any help is appreciated.

Update: I believe I have discovered the problem! It was a bad RAM stick. Windows Memory Diagnostic tool found nothing wrong, and nothing in my system seemed to be effected other than the ability to render complex AE projects with 3D layers. After a complete system restore to a known working point failed to help, I opened up the machine. Finding nothing loose, I methodically tested all the memory sticks to find the culprit. Everything is running smoothly now, albeit on less RAM.

  • Firefox not starting after update to 3.6.11 from 3.6.10 on vista platform. XUL error report. Uninstall including removing mozilla items in regedit or system restore does not resolve issue. XUL error still reappears after reinstall ? in English

Problem exists on my HP C0mpaq 6720s , Vista operating system.
System restore, restored to version 3.6.3 instead of 3.6.10 . This did not start either. Previously, I used Revo Uninstaller Pro to remove all Mozilla items, checked regedit and removed all Mozilla folders, then reinstalled 3.6.11 from your website. Mozilla would not start and XUL error stated 1.9.2.10 followed by min 1.9.2.11 and max 1.9.2.11 . This was the same error report that appeared after the automatic update.
So I am at a loss and without Mozilla .

I have successfully resolved this issue on my PC by allowing updater.exe through the firewall. This updater.exe is located in the folder where your Mozilla Firefox was installed. The default folder is "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\updater.exe"

  • CS3 won't start after system restore, fails to reinstall

I am running CS3 design premium on Windows 8. I've have the computer (Lenovo with Intel i5) for two months, though I used the design suite on my previous computer. I had to run System Restore to fix a problem with Firefox, and after I did none of my Adobe products worked. I have uninstalled/reinstalled several times while following the Adobe Help page "error message at installation" guide. Each time I get the message that Acrobat installed correctly, and everything else "Component install failed." I also wiped everything Adobe off the program list (there were a few CC programs I had trialed, plus Flash Player and some plugins) ran the CC cleaner and still got the same error message. I even tried downloading the program files from Adobe in case there was a problem with my disk and that wasn't it either. I tried enabling FLEXnet and installing under a new user, each to no avail. Examining the log file found no instances of "Return value 3" and "FATAL." The search for "ERROR" found several items that I had either already tried or made no sense.
I ran the system restore again to an earlier point, and now I can't even uninstall anything. The CC cleaner tells me some files could not be cleaned, and I should close my browser and try again, but there are no browsers open. Restarted computer and tried again, same thing. It seems I've tried all the options.
    Super frustrated.

  • Error code 0xe0ef0003, No "BOOTMGR" after a system restore, no disc/self system.

So ... my HP Pavilion dv7 NB, that I've owned just a mere two days shy of three years, decided to get extremely lazy late last night. I have malware programs in place, strong security, etc. but I suppose that something might have slipped in ... but unlikely because of the issue I'm having. Which is the same issue that, well, everyone else is having! I do use my PC a lot so no big deal. Since I did everything that is suggested to do prior to an extreme act like a system restore I figured that I had no choice but to do a restore and that all will be well. Saved what images, music and a couple of other things that are important to me onto a disc and started to wipe things clean. I've done this before on my desktop ... which I've had since 2004 (Sony VAIO VGCRB42G) and is still going strong even though it's considered a "relic" at this point. I do take very good care of my things ... So after saving what I wanted I began what I thought was going to be a fairly short process. That started last night. 24 hours and hundreds of posts later I am no closer to figuring out what is going on. Maybe the OS? Microsoft and W7 really isn't ALL that ... it's good but not great by any means. Or could it be the components? Built by HP ... or FOR HP over seas, maybe? Regardless, my experience with HP products lately has been less than stellar. And after reading reams of the same issues that others and I share, with no cure for the elusive 0xe0ef0003/No BOOTMGR bug, it seems that my actions of a mere 6 months ago were spot on .... stop buying HP products.
There was a time when HP was king. They had great products, built right in my own backyard. Heck, my mom used to work for Fairchild. Who probably made some of the components that HP used in their products ... I think ... right here in the good ol' U.S. of A. I used to deliver skids and skids of freight to HP way back when. Now their campuses look like ghost towns. Yet there was a recent major ad campaign and their brand is still taking up shelf space at Fry's on Durham Rd. ... uhh, 'scuse me, Automall  ...
I've read a number of "Solved!" messages to which none helped me. But I do appreciate this community for trying ... sorta. Too many of these 'Solved!" messages included the suggestion of purchasing a restore disc, HD or something else. A recovery/restore disc ... something that was always included for free when one bought a new PC. Something that I got with my VAIO. Something that I've only needed to use once with my old a$$ VAIO! I am amazed that my ancient relic of a desktop outlasted my NB by 6+years ... and still going.
So after searching high and low and employing every other suggestion that I haven't tried already, all one of them, that doesn't require me spending more money I've resigned myself to accepting that if I want to be "mobile" with my PCing ... I'll have to buy another. Brand. Don't get me wrong, I love to spend money and I would gladly spend the extra dough if my NB was a little older but since it's so young and already needs a "heart transplant" I'd say the outlook for the rest of it's existence is pretty short and dismal anyway. So I'll just be "putting her down" ...
I'd like to thank you for allowing me the space to rant a little. Please be kind in your responses. I'm not really looking for help to fix my NB. I consider her dead. There are plenty of posts with folks who have the exact same issue. A ton. Mega tons! Chock full of replies and answers on this issue already. Do a search for yourself if you don't believe me! No, I just thought that maybe a muckety muck might be listening. I doubt it but ya never know!
As I am typing this up on my desktop I can't help but notice that I still have two pieces of HP product that I'm still employing: The wireless keyboard and mouse that I'm using at this moment. I sure do hope they don't burn up under my hands before I hit "Post"!

    you can't reactivate ps cs.
however, adobe allows you to use ps cs2, http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/creative-suite-2-activation-end-life.htm l

  • Firefox will not run after System restore or running in compatibility mode for windows 98. How do I fix this? I already tried all other solutions on this site.

I was running Firefox fine just yesterday. I screwed up the registry a litle while removing an installed program completely, so I restored the system and everything appeared to work fine. I then decided to play an old video game, Return to Krondor, which was made back in 1998, so I ran the program with no other programs running in compatibility for windows 98. After finishing the game, I closed it and put the computer in hibernation mode. I come back today and firefox will not run at all. It is not running in the background and there are no programs running. There are no services running which could interfere with it. I think somehow Firefox may think I'm in compatibility mode still, but I have no idea.
I'm running windows Vista 32 - bit with an AMD 2.4ghz processor, 4gb ram on an Emachine computer. I have already tried system restore, restart, processes etc. Nothing works. I can still run Internet explorer and all other programs.

The person that I was assisting, has Windows 7 which has 64 bit system. Her browser was IE 10.
Was IE11 ever offered (or installed) via Windows Update?
Is her computer currently fully-patched at Windows Update?
Is Adobe Shockwave Player v12.1 (or higher) installed on her computer?
Is Adobe Flash Player v15.0.0.189 (or higher) installed on her computer?

  • Recently upgraded to new version of Firefox and after a Windows System Restore was performed today Firefox is no longer accessable (clicking Firefox icon results in nothing) what can I do?

After System Restore Mozilla Firefox icon is still on the bottom of screen but now when I click on the icon the Firefox browser does not open. I have a number of bookmarks saved that I would perfer not to lose - is there anyway I can restore Firefox without losing bookmarks?

Using System restore can cause your Firefox installation to get corrupted because not all files are restored, so be careful with doing a System Restore.
Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 9.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • Start and Start apps don't work after System Restore

Hey guys, I tried to install Andy (Android emulator) on my PC today and I had to reboot after the setup was complete. This time when booting up, my computer froze before login screen. I've restarted the computer several times, but no login screen.
So I used System Restore to restore my system (refresh point is 2 days old) and voila, everything works like it should...
Except for Start menu, Cortana & search bar and notifications. Restarting explorer.exe didn't fix the problem. Even Start menu apps like Music or Store don't work... Only way to open the Settings app is to click on my network connection icon. Help please!
    I'm using build 9926

..............So I used System Restore to restore my system (refresh point is 2 days old)...............
It is possible that you are missing the updates that were installed in that 2 days. You rolled back 2 days, now you need to reinstall those updates.
If you cannot use Start Menu, please follow this instruction given by Insider Hub......
Checking for updates may fix this problem. To check for updates without the Start menu, do the following:
    Select the Internet Explorer icon.
Type http://update.microsoft.com into the address bar and select
    Enter.
If you are prompted to run a control, click
    Yes or Confirm
This should bring up the Check for updates window. Install updates.
If no update is available, or the available updates don’t fix the issue, restart the device–this should make the Start menu appear. To reboot without using the Start menu:
Hold down the Windows key and select L to lock the device. Swipe up or select
Enter to open the sign in screen. Select the
Power icon on the log in screen to restart the computer.
    OR
Hold down the Windows key and select R to bring up a command prompt. In the prompt, type
    shutdown –r to restart
    Good luck.

I did a system restore, trying to get rid of the new update (which I HATE), and now when I try to open iTunes, I get an error message telling me that "This version of iTunes has not been correctly localized for this language.  Please run the English version."  You can't change the language option unless you can open iTunes - and IT WON'T OPEN!!!  What a piece of crap!  If there existed an iTunes substitute, I would purchase it in a hot minute!

Strip it out and start again.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you really want to roll back to 11.4 uninstall all iTunes/Apple components as described in the second box, restore the pre-upgrade version of the library as described in Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash, then download and install from one of these direct links:

  • 1.Backup to External drive 2. CoverArt lost after Windows system restore

I recently spent many hours searching for and applying cover art for my music which was mostly ripped before cover art was readily available.
Because of this investment, I want to be sure my library is fully backed up. I want to use space on an external drive, rather than DVD's.
I noticed as I added art, iTunes started acting sluggish. I thought it might be because of the new version or a recent Windows Vista update. So I decided to run system restore. I was appalled to discover that restore wiped out the art I had added. So I reversed the restore and the cover art returned. It became clear to me that the art must be stored in some other way than in the actual music file. I've searched the forum and found others who had problems with system restore, but no explanation of exactly what I should do if I want to proceed with a system restore. I use system restore several times a year and I have never lost anything in iTunes before I started adding cover art. I also never had a problem with sluggishness til I added a bunch of cover art.
My library is large at 3000 items.
Is there a way to compact or optimize the database to improve responsiveness?
Is there a way to backup to an external drive? Is it just a file copy and export library file?
If I export the library as an xml file before I do a system restore, can I then replace it after the restore and protect my cover art.

To be completely sure what you're doing please take a look at your iTunes Folder and see what Vista stores inside it. To find it, go to Start>Computer>Hard Disk C>Users>Your Name>Music>iTunes>.......
Please note there is an artwork folder PLUS a music folder!
My guess is that your system restore point pre-dated the time you added artwork to your iTunes files. (Celebrate that system restore still works for you--I have not been able to successfully restore for over a year now--Norton Internet Security causes system restore failures for many Windows users! I've tried to do this using Windows XP and Vista--and I can never successfully restore anymore.)
To fully backup your library, just copy the entire iTunes folder to another source--second hard drive, USB drive, or burn it to a CD or DVD, etc.
If you're experiencing "sluggishness" it may be due to the amount of RAM on your system. iTunes needs a great deal of RAM to run smoothly. You can choose to: increase the RAM on your system, OR, turn off cover flow/album view and see if things run more smoothly.
