System Restore: plus recent documents?
OK, I give up. The 10.5.6 Update has completely messed up my Mac, as I've documented here:

I only wish to Restore my System to 10.5.5, however, I have downloaded iTunes, downloaded my recent Mail, and created documents since the date of the Update install.
My Questions: How do I restore my System to a specific TM backup date AND retain/restore my recent data?
After reading your previous posts I wouldn't bother going back I'd reinstall.
Backup recent items to DVDs if you don't have a spare drive plus the older TM should have you covered. Hopefully you have other Backups from when everything was working OK.
No point making a clone of a messed up install.
Archive and install keeping settings will give you a new system to run a Combo updater on.
Checking Console (in Utilities) for any errors and flaky 3rd party apps might give you a few leads too.
The update has been fine for most users so lets look at other options.

I just updated my MAC operating system and when I went to open a recent document in numbers, the document that opened had none of my data and was formatted differently. Can I get my document with all my information back?
I suggest the easy stuff first:
1) quite Numbers and restart Numbers
2) reboot the computer

No. A full system restore erases your internal HD, then copies everything from the backup you select. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for details.
You can then restore selected things from the most recent backup, via TM's "Star Wars" display, per FAQ #15. -

You don't.
The music sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases.
The iphone is not a backup device.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer. Certainly you did not restore your system without making sure that your backup copy was up to date.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good) then you can transfer itunes purchases from the iphone. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases -
Apple support had not responded to my requests for clarification. The update corrupted both ITunes and Office Outlook mobileme. The error message when I tried to start up I Tunes was Error 7 Windows 193. I un installed I Tunes and re installed the latest ver and encountered the same error message. I finally did a system restore. Was this a one time problem or is the update bad. In over 30 years I'd never had a problem with any Apple update.

After System Restore Mozilla Firefox icon is still on the bottom of screen but now when I click on the icon the Firefox browser does not open. I have a number of bookmarks saved that I would perfer not to lose - is there anyway I can restore Firefox without losing bookmarks?
Using System restore can cause your Firefox installation to get corrupted because not all files are restored, so be careful with doing a System Restore.
Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

Installed around 8 important Windows 7 updates over the past 3 days (so, nothing I could uninstall as they're security updates mainly). Since then, Windows Live Mail doesn't respond in Firefox. Did 2 System Restores and downloaded Live Essentials again but nothing works.

1.Backup to External drive 2. CoverArt lost after Windows system restore
I recently spent many hours searching for and applying cover art for my music which was mostly ripped before cover art was readily available.
Because of this investment, I want to be sure my library is fully backed up. I want to use space on an external drive, rather than DVD's.
I noticed as I added art, iTunes started acting sluggish. I thought it might be because of the new version or a recent Windows Vista update. So I decided to run system restore. I was appalled to discover that restore wiped out the art I had added. So I reversed the restore and the cover art returned. It became clear to me that the art must be stored in some other way than in the actual music file. I've searched the forum and found others who had problems with system restore, but no explanation of exactly what I should do if I want to proceed with a system restore. I use system restore several times a year and I have never lost anything in iTunes before I started adding cover art. I also never had a problem with sluggishness til I added a bunch of cover art.
My library is large at 3000 items.
Is there a way to compact or optimize the database to improve responsiveness?
Is there a way to backup to an external drive? Is it just a file copy and export library file?
If I export the library as an xml file before I do a system restore, can I then replace it after the restore and protect my cover art.To be completely sure what you're doing please take a look at your iTunes Folder and see what Vista stores inside it. To find it, go to Start>Computer>Hard Disk C>Users>Your Name>Music>iTunes>.......
Please note there is an artwork folder PLUS a music folder!
My guess is that your system restore point pre-dated the time you added artwork to your iTunes files. (Celebrate that system restore still works for you--I have not been able to successfully restore for over a year now--Norton Internet Security causes system restore failures for many Windows users! I've tried to do this using Windows XP and Vista--and I can never successfully restore anymore.)
To fully backup your library, just copy the entire iTunes folder to another source--second hard drive, USB drive, or burn it to a CD or DVD, etc.
If you're experiencing "sluggishness" it may be due to the amount of RAM on your system. iTunes needs a great deal of RAM to run smoothly. You can choose to: increase the RAM on your system, OR, turn off cover flow/album view and see if things run more smoothly. -
After system restore i reinstalled firefox, how to get back bookmarks etc with old firefox data?
After system restore the only thing i have is old firefox data on desktop if all bookmarks, passwords are recovered it will be great help.

ThanksThe "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop has been created as the consequence of resetting Firefox.
Doing a Session Restore may have reverted the profiles.ini file to a previous version that hasn't registered the new profile folder that a reset had created, so you may need to check for this.

The "Application Data" folder in XP/Win2K and the "AppData" folder in Windows Vista and Windows 7 and later versions are hidden folders.

If you have a profile folder that is more recent than the "Old Firefox Data" on the desktop then you can use edit the profiles.ini file and change the path of the currently default profile to the name of the profile folder as you find in Document and Settings.

It is always best to be cautious with using System Restore as this can cause some file to be replaced with older copies, i.e. your Firefox installation and profile folder can get inconsistent and you may have to reinstall Firefox as well. -

Ideacentre D400 Purple LEDs after system restore
Hi. I recently bought ideacentre d400 without hard disk. I have formatted my disk and tried to install windows home server from recovery DVD. Everything seems doing fine, but when installation reboots server it stays in initial mode. Disk LEDs are purple same as system status LED. When I'm trying to install Connector it says that it can't download some files from server. When I connect via browser windows server page loads correclty. What can be causing this trouble?

Inverted logic to yours. Restore... is unchecked. Nonetheless, re-opening is not effectively deactivated. For ecxample when I reboot the Mac with a lot of Applications + Documents open, and when I start the one or the other application then it comes up with the recently opened document. Even Terminal shows me the whole recent contents of a ssh session to a database server.
In the "Do you really want to Restart? Are yor 1000 % sure?" box, re-opening apps is deactivated.
On a travel, visiting customers, Keynote at customer B, automatically came up with a presentation for the customer A (competitor of B). This was very embarrassing and this is inacceptable. -
Can not open itunes after system restore????

I recently used system restore to fix some problems with my computer. After that, everything runs well except itunes. Whenever I double click on itunes, it prompts error box "itunes encountered a problem and needs to close, we are sorry for any inconveniences" and gives me options of sending the problem to Microsoft or not. hmmmmm. if you system restore over a fresh itunes install (or QuickTime install), you can strip out installation registry entries for itunes. (people typically get the "some of the required files are missing" message after doing that though.)
(MS) Frequently Asked Questions Regarding System Restore in Windows XP
let's try scraping your existing itunes and quicktime out of there, and reinstalling.
first, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (we will be using it later on.)
next, use the complete uninstallation instructions in the following document to remove your existing itunes and QT:
Trouble installing iPod, iTunes, or QuickTime software in Windows
if you run into trouble on one of the uninstalls, use Installer CleanUp to remove the installation configuration information for the program that is giving you grief, and then use the complete uninstallation instructions as a guide to a manual removal of leftover program files and folders.
even if you don't run into trouble, run Windows CleanUp after you've completed the uninstalls, to check to see if there's any leftover itunes or QT installation configuration information on the PC. (if you find any, remove it.)
reboot the PC. download and save a fresh copy of the itunes installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.

Access Time Machine partial backup after system restore
My iMac crashed. I ran Disk Utility Repair Disk on the hard drive and received this message: "Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files".
I had had Time Machine backing up regularly wirelessly, and previously hadn't noticed any problem with it. So I thought everything had been backed-up properly.
I reformatted the hard drive and chose to restore the system from Time Machine back-up. It turned out that you can only restore from full system back-ups and my Time Machine hadn't made a full back-up for half a year! Previously it had made full back-ups every 2 or 3 days then it stopped doing full back-ups half a year ago without any warning.
I went ahead with the system restore from the half-year-old full backup thinking that I would be able to access the partial back-ups once the system is restored. But I can't! If I access Time Machine, the most recent back-up I can see is the half-year-old full backup from which I restored the system. There are documents, music and hundreds of photos, originally saved to the hard drive since the last full back-up, that I cannot access, even though Time Machine had been backing up every day until the iMac crashed.
