System Restore - what drivers do I load?

I had a self-induced computer crash with a new Lenovo x120e and am trying to restore my system. The Lenovo Operating System Recovery Disk did nothing (went to Restore and Recovery and then crashed) but fortunately someone recommended getting a Windows 7 recovery disk from NeoSoft (for $10).  That at least allows me to get to Windows System Restore!
Now the problem is that System Restore can't find my operating system, and asks me to load drivers. I have no idea what drivers to load!  There is a DVD with drivers...but as this computer has no DVD that isn't terribly useful to me.
I did find a folder drivers when I ended the command line prompt through System Recovery...but still at at a lost for what drivers to install.
Can anybody help here?  Thanks.

Uh, tough call, you'll have to check what is used with a PC, drivers or driver+software.
If driver+software then that's a problem as they likely won't write one for OS X.
If drivers you can install these open source one and hopefully it might work,  Dell and Apple don't get along so you likely won't see Dell drivers installed by Apple in OS X like they do for others.

  • How can I "see" what drivers are currently loaded in memory

I am currently trying to track down an "apparent" memory leak where the performance of my relatively idle Macbook degrades over time due to an ever increasing allocation of wired memory (as viewed from Activity Monitor). Within about two hours of rebooting with only the essential processes running, I see my wired memory continue to increase up to and beyond 700 MB. About this time I experience intermittent spikes in the "CPU-%System" allocation of 25% and more which causes severe lagging in my mouse and keyboard. The machine eventually becomes unusable and requires a reboot.
Because I see the wired memory continue to grow inexplicably over time and I am unable to isolate this to any processes listed in the Activity Monitor pane I have to believe that it is something not "visible" from the AM pane. I have read that wired memory is responsible for hosting the VM objects, the VM buffer caches, the I/O buffer caches, and the drivers.
FWIW, I downloaded "Main Menu" maintenance software from Santa Software and ran all of the cache maintenance scripts - unfortunately, this did not effect any discernible improvement.
My next guess is that there is some ill-performing driver loaded into memory that is chomping on my wired memory but I do not know how to "view" what drivers are currently resident.
Is there a way to view each of the drivers that are currently loaded in memory?
And, better yet, is there a way to view what amount of memory is currently allocated to each such driver?
Any help is much appreciated - thanks in advance!

You would certainly see SOME "depreciation in memory", due to e.g. spotlight indexing and other processes. But it should be nowhere near to what you describe to the point where your CPU fan runs.
Without any further detailed technical expertise, I would assume that it could be a RAM stick that is not working as it should be, resulting in the CPU having to make the extra "effort" to compensate for lack of RAM.
Have you taken the RAM sticks out and reseated them? An dust preventing good contact?

  • Itunes wiped after system restore - what can I do?

I know that i was really silly by not backing up my itunes but I was anxious to get laptop fixed so had system restore done and am now wondering if there is any way to get my library off my ipod and into my newly downloaded itunes?

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to sync automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchased songs and in some cases, videos and games) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

A selection of iPod to iTunes utilities:
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
SharePod Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows

iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
Music Rescue Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • After system restore, no Apple applications will load

I have a Mac Mini (on Snow Leopard) that I recently needeed to restore using Time Machine. I wiped the hard drive and restored everything from a good backup. The machine boots up fine (10.6.8), but when I try to run any of the Apple applications (System Update, App Store, Mail, iTunes, iWork and iLife apps, etc.), the icon bounces for a bit, and then nothing. No application starts. Other apps do seem to work (Chrome, Firefox, Boxee,.. )
I've run the Other Installations from the Snow Leopard disk to reinstall the Applications, but still the same results. I reran the iLife installation and still nothing.
What do I need to do to get the Apple applications to work?

Seems to me your TimeMachine drive is messed up somehow. Disconnect it
Copy your users file folders (Music, Docs etc, not Library) to a regualr external drive, export any bookmarks, product license keys or any data (program names) you require to rebuild the machine from scratch with. Write down your User name, case sensitive. Disconnect.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 installer disk, use Disk Utilities under the Installer menu to Erase > Security Option > Zero All Data the ENTIRE boot drive, it's on the far left with the drive makers name and size.
Let this complete, it's going to take some time to finish and really scrubs the drive, makes sure all the bits are working.
Next install 10.6 and reboot, setup with the same name as before and use Sofware Update to get the machine on 10.6.8
Next, install your programs from original sources, (like from the 10.6 disk) as many as you possibly can, they will run faster if they are installed before your huge files. This is also you get a nice clean copy free of issues.
Last, hook up your external drive (not TimeMachine) and return the contents of Music to Musc, Doc's to Doc's and so on into the same named user account folders.
If you keep your boot drive below 50% filled, it will operate very fast forever, just don't move it while it's running. The Zero Erase hopefully fixed any bad or damaged sectors on the boot drive that might be the reason for your problem, or it might not have been, I don't know.
Once you have a yourself a nice and clean fresh install, take this moment to erase the external drive (no data) and use Carbon Copy Cloner (free) to clone your internal boot drive to the external drive.
You can hold the option key and boot from this drive at anytime, setup CCC to auto-update the clone as a backup.
You can access the files on the clone drive too, just like any other drive.
Far as TimeMachine, you can still use that, do the same Zero Erase on it and set it up again.
Reducing bad sectors effect on hard drives
What I suspect happened is something corrupted your data on the TM drive and thus when you restored it was corrupted. Bad sectors on hard drives can do this.
    Good Luck

  • How do I perform a system restore in Windows 10?

QuestionHow do I perform a system restore in Windows 10?
AnswerNote: This article is about Windows 10. Separate articles are available on performing system restore in Windows 8 and Windows 7.
System restore rolls your system files back to a restore point from a previous date. You can make restore points manually, but Windows will also make them automatically. This will undo system settings, changes from Windows Update, and changes from newly installed software (including removing software installed since that restore point).
Your data, documents, and most programs won't be changed. This makes system restore a great place to start when you're having a problem and don't know how to fix it.
System restore reverts drivers installed since the restore point was created. Programs and apps installed since the restore point was created will also need to be reinstalled.
To view other recovery options in Windows 10, read this article:
What recovery options are available in Windows 10?
To perform a system restore, follow these steps:
Open the Start Menu and select Settings.
Select Update & security and then Recovery.
Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
After the computer restarts to a screen with various options, select Troubleshoot.
Select Advanced options and then System Restore.
When you reach an account selection screen, select an account.
Enter your password and select Continue.
Follow the prompts, choosing your desired restore point. (You'll most likely want to use the most recent restore point from before the problem started).
You can also watch this video to learn how to perform a system restore:

If you want to create an image of the entire disk, then `dd' is an option. But you can also use ufsdump to create an image of a filesystem running on that disk, but you need to do that for every filesystem on the disk and please keep a copy of you vtoc for the future if you need to restore everything.
On the other hand you make me thing about someone who wants to clone machines and then a Flash Archive can also be an option. Please keep in mind to ask the question in the future instead of conformation of your answer ;-)

  • How do I restore System Restore?

How do I restore System Restore? I am running Firefox 17.0 on Windows XP SP3.

The pop-up asking if I wanted to upgrade to FF 17.0 had a link to a warning that it might disable System Restore. I clicked “No” for the update not wanting to lose System Restore but 17.0 somehow loaded anyway. Since Mozilla techs knew that 17.0 could cause System Restore problems, I am hoping they will know how to fix them.

  • On boot ATI Radeon HD 4200 drivers fail to load. To recover, must use System Restore

I have an HP Pavilion p6737f with Windows 7 64-bit. No error message. No changes to system.
When I boot the computer it comes up to a resolution of 800 x 600 which is the "rock bottom" of the spectrum for my computer. I check the device manager and it tells me that the driver - ATI Radeon HD 4200 failed to install on boot. In order to return to normal I have to do a "System Restore" to a time that I created. Otherwise, I can't use the higher graphic settings.

    Hi Tom,
Reinstall the video driver using the HP Recovery Manager (drivers only).  The driver on the hard drive may be corrupted and then Windows will use the default VGA driver.

  • Unable to Load Windows After System Restore from BIOS freeze

I have a pavilion G6 that froze after a BIOS Update ran. Here's what happened and here is what I did:
Uninstalled HP printer software; upon reboot, BIOS Update appeared and ran.
Upon reboot, Win 7 froze @ Welcome screen.
I was instructed this am on this forum to press F8 and do a system restore, which I did.
This appeared to work until about 30 mins ago when it began freezing again and opening to Safe Mode screen.
    Now what??

    Hi
    Workaround:
There are few steps that has worked for few but not always..
Restart and tap F2.  F2  will show an option “BIOS Management” . Select BIOS Management and then select “Roll Over to the previous BIOS”
BIOS Management option will not be available if the system do not have HP_Tools partition installed or if it is deleted.
Fix if BIOS Management is not available
    i)                    Press and Hold the Windows Key and B key at the same time when the system is turned off or follow the steps from this link: Recovering the BIOS using key press combination
iii)                 Shutdown the Notebook. Remove the Hard Drive and then turn the computer ON and tap F10 to load BIOS. If it loads BIOS then it should rollback to previous BIOS or it might show a black screen. Just leave the system ON for about 2-3 mins and turn it on with the hard drive and check.
If none of the above worked then most likely we need to bench the notebook as system will not boot from recovery discs.
Let us know how it goes!

  • Mozilla apps won't load after System Restore from TM

Alas, a hard disk failure which Apple kindly replaced even though It happened 25 days out of 3-year AppleCare. Thanks!
New hard disk installed, proceeded to do System restore from TimeMachine and everything went perfectly (as far as I can tell) EXCEPT Firefox and Thunderbird. All the other apps are loading and seem to be working as I would expect (I guess I won't know for sure until I've worked for a few days) but Firefox will not load - the icon bounces in the dock for a couple of seconds and then disappears. Out of curiosity, I tired to load Thunderbird (which I seldom use) and not even the icon appears.
    I am using OS-X 10.5.7 with Firefox 3.0.11
I have tried deleting the apps and the associated files in Library?Application Support and doing a re-install from a fresh download - same result. I tired restoring the apps from TimeMachine using a restore date one day before the HardDisk failure. Same result. I have used MacTuneUp to repair permission. Same result.
Any ideas why this is happening? I am most surprised that a fresh install didn't help. And it's interesting that two Mozilla apps are affected. I can live without Thunderbird but Firefox is important as there are some websites that still refuse to open with Safari.

    [email protected] wrote:
OK - that was a good suggestion. Firefox and Thunderbird both work when I log is as a guest. Now what should I be looking for on my main account that is blocking the apps from opening? Thanks for the help.
probably something in their preferences. the most radical thing would be to delete the whole folders /users/usernmae/library/application support/firefox and /users/username/library/thunderbird. or just move those folders to the desktop. then try starting firefox and thunderbird. however, that will wipe all user info in both apps.

  • After doing a system restore, Firefox won't load pages.

I restored my laptop a couple of days ago (from a previous date, not a full system restore), now firefox will open to the home page (google), but will not load any other page. It doesn't even bring up the "page won't load" page, it just continually says 'connecting' forever. I also noticed, even when I first open firefox, and it opens the google homepage, it doesn't have google.com in the address bar, it has 'about:home'. Internet explorer seems to be working fine, and my internet connection is fine, so I am not sure what the problem seems to be.

hello rlyslowff, one thing you could try is to remove all program rules for firefox from your firewall/security software and let it detect the program again...
please also [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/ update your plugins] (some of them are out-dated & have security vulnerabilities that are actively exploited on the web).
in case this didn't solve the issue, go to the firefox ''menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information'', copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum, as this might give us further clues what is going on...

  • After a System restore event I am unable to 'unpack' the Abobe Creative Cloud App to load it.

I purchase a subscription to the cloud (Lightroom / Photoshop).  The APP all downloaded fine after the purchase and the short cut worked, I managed to download the 2 software packages and started to use them.  I then had to action a Win 7 Systems restore.  Following this the software was no longer on the Laptop.  I therefore tried to re-download the APP.  This initially seemed to work OK but when running it, the APP appears to start the loading process, then just disappears after a few seconds.  I have waited for hours to see if it would finally burst into life.  Can anyone suggest what I need to do to restore functionality and what the issue is?  Many thanks in anticipation.
