System running hotter after disabling Hyperthreading!???

Hi,
I've been running my 875P in a system quite happily for the last few weeks and the Thermaltake Spark 7 has been keeping the CPU nice and cool and a decent 30c but after installing updated drivers for a modem here i found that the system crashed unless i disabled Hyperthreading - obviously the drivers don't get on with HT enabled...
Anyway, since disabling Hyperthreading my system now runs at a much warmer 42c! which is a hell of a difference from 30c average temp.
Would disabling Hyperthreading make this much of a difference ie would the CPU get hotter as its doing more work or somthing?
Its a P4 2.8Ghz 800fsb btw.
Any ideas?

yeah, BIOS v1.8 made no difference.
I'm running StatBar as i usually monitor performance and the temp is hovering around 42c with 0% CPU useage.
Hmmmm... this sucks.
Well, its the poor drivers for the modem i blame, as everything else worked with HT enabled and ovbiously it would be enabled if the drivers worked properly.
I'll only have to put up with it for a couple more months as i'll be getting dsl here and so a new modem will be going in.
I don't like it running that hot though, but its the noise from the fan thats annoying me more than anything! ;-)
So you say look through the other threads? So would you say that disabling HT in any MSI BIOS makes the CPU work harder or hotter etc is this right or would disabling HT on any mobo behave in the same way?

    Has anyone else noticed their systems running hotter than usual after updating to 10.10.3? I noticed it immediately after the update about a week or so ago, and there has been no change since. I've also installed the supplemental update, BTW.
    I'm on a 2014 Retina MacBook Pro. I've noticed that Heatsink B and the memory are reporting about 5-10ºC warmer than usual, and the CPU is about 5-7ºC warmer. The fans are regularly audible. I haven't changed how I use the computer. I've also checked Activity Monitor and nothing looks out of the ordinary.

  • Running Hotter after 10.5.3 update?

    I have a MBP 2.5ghz and it's been running hotter (the bottom) after I did the update for 10.5.3. I've restarted the machine thinking that the systems may clear the cache or some other process was making it run hotter. But it's consistently running hotter now than it did when 10.5.2. Anyone experiencing this also on their MBP 2.5ghz?

    This is what I worked out...
    I was using Fan Control before I upgraded so I uninstalled it by following the instructions here: Fan control then I downloaded an re-installed the app from the same address, and now she's purring again - Woo!

  • Macbook Pro has short battery life and runs hotter after firmware update

    I installed the macbook pro EFI firmware update yesterday and now my MBP runs hotter and the fan starts running earlier than it has ever done before. Also, my battery lasts 51 minutes from a full charge whereas, before the update, it lasted 2 hours (using the same programs and display settings).
    Has anybody else seen this problem?
    Please tell me I'm not alone with seeing this. I am hoping that there is a solution and it's better than 'buy a new battery'. The fact that my box now runs hotter with the fan on more constantly would not be solved by a new battery I think.

    Also had the problem of MBP running much hotter after most recent Firmware update.
    My fans have been running at 6k RPM constantly, and processor Temps have been running at 70-88°.
    Following the advice in this topic, I checked the Activity Monitor, which told me both my account and my son's account (which was running but had no actual applications running) had separate Airport processes going nuts – each at approx 80-95%!
    Switching off airport and logging out of my son's account almost immediately started to cool the processors, and the fans began to slow down. Switching Airport back on doesn't seem to heat things up again, but if I start to crunch numbers, it all happens over again...
    So who knows why the firmware update is making these processes freak out.... weird.

  • Running hotter after reset?

    A tech support guy had me do a PRAM and Power Management reset this afternoon. Since doing that, my MBP seems to be running a lot hotter, especially while playing World of Warcraft. The keyboard is noticeably warmer, and the strip right between the panel hinge and the keyboard is VERY hot. I don't recall the laptop being this hot before. I am running a platform fan underneath but it's not doing any good. I also heard the cooling fan kick on - it hasn't done that since I did a firmware upgrade when I bought it two months ago.
    Perhaps related - the system will no longer boot to Windows XP. It brings up the boot logo, screen goes black, that's all she wrote. I have to hold the power button down to reboot.

    since you did a reset maybe you should go to their support page and try the download for smcfirmware upgrade. that sets the fans a little higher. this is apples upgrade, and warrantied. but if yoiu want to go a step farther try out the smcfancontrol program that someone has taken this upgrade a step further and given you better fan control, however this is NOT an apple approved program. i use it and love it, not a big fan of the fanspeed program though, there are 2 of them out there. search the boards and you'll find them

    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

    First I could not download Itunes new version 10.5.3.3 by clicking on down load in Itunes. I had to open my browersand go to Apple site and down load.     First time poster. I bought a E105-S1402 yesterday from Best Buy. The computer was running at a comfortable tempture up until I updated the bios per the download and drivers page, http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=DL&os=&category=&moid=214052....  Now, the laptop runs much hotter. Does anyone else have the same issue?     You might try to update your bios to v 1.5. It is the very latest bios update (late April 2009) for the E105-S1402.
    My E105 does run a little hotter than my previous HP laptop, however, I have gotten used to it. I'm guessing the fact that the body is made of aluminum, rather than plastic, is the reason why it feels hotter. However, what we get with warmth as a negative, we gain in build quality and ruggedness as a positive.
    As long as your laptop has not shutdown on its own, which would be an indication that the computer tried to save itself from damage due to excessive heat, then you are probably fine, albeit uncomfortable.

    Yes. After running the CPU at high speeds for a period of time, it will get hot. You do not need to worry about it since the fan will turn on if necessary. There are some tools to help you satisfy any curiosity you might have. Activity Monitor (/Applications/Utilities) has a small CPU meter (hit apple-4 or apple-5) to let you see when your iBook is working hard for extended periods of time. The other one is Temperature Monitor, which you can find through Google. It tells you what your temperature actually is. My processor has maxed out around 165° F during heavy loads and I'm still doing alright.

    I have a HP-Pavilion dv6 6121TX, with AMD 6770m gpu.
    The fan of the gpu runs constantly even after disabling it using the following command
    echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
    the output for "cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch" is as follows

    It shows that the DGPU is off and yet the fan for the same runs continuously at full speed.

    You might also try a different battery if you have access to one. Unfortunately, many of the replacement batteries being shipped by Apple are defective. They don't fit properly into the battery bay. I suspect that if the quality control is this poor, then it seems likely that other problems will arrise as well. Check carefully that the battery itself is not overheating. Another possibility which also happened to me is that after installing the last upgrade to the operating system, one or more of the third party widgets became problematic, causing the same problem you describe. After removing all third party widgets, the problem stopped. Good Luck

    We are trying to execute multiple commands via "Operating System Command Before/After Message Processing".
    When we use single command say for example cp or mv (copy or move) the commands get executed fine.
    eg: cp %F /var/opt/data/outbound/Test/Dummy.txt 
    /this works fine/
    when we club commands together or try to redirect the outputs of commands, none of the commands get executed.
    eg:
    cp %F /var/opt/data/outbound/Test/Dummy.txt ; rm %F
    or
    wc -l %F > /var/opt/data/outbound/Test/Dummy.txt
    Is it possible to execute multiple commands or redirect the output  of commands without using a shell script? The PI server we are working on iis hosted on UNIX environment.

  • How do I turn Exposé/Spaces off, without access to System Preferences because I disabled it's space?

    I accidentally disabled a column of spaces where I had my System Preferences running, in "Exposé and Spaces".
    Now I cannot access my System Preferences at all.
    I can see System Preferences as a running application in the doc and command tabbing though running applications. I can also get to it this way and see the menu bar on the top of my screen and click through the menus and drop down menus, however I cannot see any windows.
    I know that I can open different windows for if the System by selecting something in the drop down menus. Then I see the selected window if I click and hold down on the dock icon of the system preferences. However, as soon as I try to click on the window it disappears.
    I know that my problem would be solved if I could turn off Spaces but how do I do this if   I cannot access it though System Preferences?

    After a long struggle and research I found a solution.
    I discovered Spaces exists in the Utilities folder in Applications.
    When I opened the application from here it gave me the 3 spaces I had assigned, vertically displayed, with the system preference window sitting, outside and fairly large, hovering, partially infront of it all the other screens.  After several tries of grabbing and disappearing it finally let me drag and drop the window into one of the screen.
    I am really relieved now!!

  • System hungs up after an upgrade (because of the virtualbox ?)

    I just update my system's virtualbox to the newest version.
    After the upgrade I found my system hungs up after an random period of running...
    anybody knows what happened ?
