System Settings - Memory usage - Application

In Memory Usage - Application, under System Settings, my slider is set to 100% and gives 2560 MB.
I was wondering where this figure of 2560MB comes from, is that the max that FCE can use/access? I have 10Gb Ram on the system in total, why is FCE only using 2560?
Is this normal, or indicating a problem on the system somewhere?
Thanks
Neil

Thanks
That has set my mind at rest. I have not broken it or done something wrong then.
I am just working my way through a basic FCE 4 tutorial book.

  • Can't see system ram/memory usage in Mavericks dock icon anymore

I used to be able to select memory usage for the dock icon, but now it seems to be gone, or not there, in Mavericks.  All I see now is CPU, Network, and Disk Activity.    Anyone know where memory usage  went?

.....update,         I found this answer on another post.    (I may have to use third party options untill Apple provides an updated memory "pressure" usage to the dock icon.
This is no longer an option, especially since Mavericks has new memory management routines (ie, memory compression) that make the charting of memory usage less straightforward. Apple has switched to a new "Memory Pressure" approach to viewing memory usage, which is available in the Memory section of Activity Monitor, but so far has not been added as a Dock icon option. Hopefully Apple will do so, as this would perhaps be one of the more useful Dock icon options.

  • Application Server Control 10g : Memory usage wrong

    Hi,
We have install an OAS 10g on Windows Server 2003 with 8Gb RAM. But on the Application server Control, only 2 Gb are display in memory usage (Application server 372 Mb+Free 1675 Mo).
How configure Application Server to see all memory available ?
    Thanks

32bit Windows have 4GB address space, which is split 2Gb system and 2Gb user. So user processes have 2Gb virtual address space (even if hw has more RAM).
Perhaps "App Server Control" mem stats system is limited by this concept. And maybe the app server is threaded?
Is it 32bit or 64bit hardware and OS?

  • System Settings/Ram

    Under the System Settings, what are the best settings for;
    Memory Usage
    Application
    Still Cache
    Thumbnail Cache
    Disk
    Ram............?
1.5 gigs is all my computer supports.
One last thing. Would it be best to run FCP under a new user name. Since I can't add more ram. Logging out of the Administrator (Me). So that what other garbage I have running in the Administrator account doesn't run, and frees up more ram/processor.
I have read some post on this topic. But, seeing I can't add more ram. I'm asking for advice.

Running the computer under another account won't really help your ram usage. Many of these are background processes that are owned by the Root. You can not kill them. Don't worry, they do not take up much ram and little cpu headroom. If there are processes that you initiated and you are interested in squeezing the machine to make every last CPU cycle or byte of RAM available, go through your user processes and kill anything that is not necessary - for example - a palm pilot background sync process.
If you are curious, in Activity Monitor, set your display to Active Processes. You'd be surprised how few there are other than the apps you are currently working with.
Also, while you are in Activity Monitor, you can get a grip on how the ram is being used by keeping an eye on Page In/Outs in System Memory. Don't worry about the Ins. The outs indicate that the ram is being overwhelmed and is swapping data out to the virtual memory (a file on your system drive). A zero here indicates the work is all being done in RAM with no page outs to VM.
This does point out why it is important to not fill up your hard drive. The virtual memory file is invisible to you but can grow to multiple GB in size. When your disk fills with other junk, you reduce the head room for disk read/write operations but equally importantly, reduce the space for the virtual memory and this can cause a lock up aka frozen system.
    good luck.

  • High RAM memory usage compared to other systems

I'm suffering with memory usage problems, only in open 2 tabs of facebook(it's only for example, any 'heavy' page freeze also) in firefox*(for example also, but this occur in chromium also) freeze computer.
I've 1GB of memory, it isn't big but also isn't very little.
I'm using XFCE with compiz (yes, compiz, since use a very lightweight openbox-based session doesn't help, then compiz...) when system start (after login) system is consuming 130MB approximately of RAM.
after 1 hour if close all open apps and see memory usage again consume is something about 350MB, "only solution" is reboot.

another example, this problem stop me make certain things, for example is impossible browsing in web while programming in eclipse, this is very uncomfortable.
other thing, this not occur in Windows XP, I can open more than 10 tabs in firefox, and eclipse open, etc...

hotvic, could you please change the title to something more descriptive? 'memory problems' sounds like you have problems e.g. remembering / recalling things, which is not an Arch issue ;P

  • Your system run out of application memory

your system run out of application memory i get this message pop up and everything freezes

There is excessive swapping of data between physical memory (that is, the memory chips on the logic board) and virtual memory (one or more files on the startup volume.) That activity is relatively slow and causes the whole system to be less responsive. It can happen for two reasons:
A long-running process with a memory leak (a kind of bug)
Not enough memory for your usage pattern
Tracking down a memory leak can be difficult, and it may come down to a process of elimination.
These instructions are for OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks.") The procedure may be slightly different for earlier versions of OS X.
When you notice the swap activity, open the Activity Monitor application and select All Processes from the View menu, if it's not already selected. Select the Memory tab. Click the heading of the Real Mem column in the process table twice to sort the table with the highest value at the top. If you don't see that column, select
View ▹ Columns ▹ Real Memory
    from the menu bar.
If one process (excluding "kernel_task") is using much more memory than all the others, that could be an indication of a leak. A better indication would be a process that continually grabs more and more real memory over time without ever releasing it. Here is an example of how it's done.
The processes named "Safari Web Content" render web pages for Safari. They use a lot of memory and may leak if certain Safari extensions or third-party web plugins are installed. Consider them prime suspects.
Another process often implicated in memory leaks is "inkjet4" or "inkjet8," which is a component of the HP printing software. If it's present, force-quit the process in Activity Monitor to solve the problem temporarily. Empty the print queues in the Printers & Scanners preference pane (which has a slightly different name in each recent version of OS X.) If you don't use an HP printer, remove the software. Otherwise, if the problem is recurrent, update the software (which may not help) or contact HP support.
"Wired" memory should be a small part of the total. That memory is not swapped, but it makes less physical memory available which may then result in swapping. If you have a lot of wired memory, that's usually an indication of a memory leak in a third-party program that modifies the operating system at a low level. Ask for guidance in that case.
If you don't have an obvious memory leak, your options are to install more memory (if possible) or to run fewer programs simultaneously.
The next suggestion is only for users familiar with the shell. For a more precise, but potentially misleading, test, run the following command:
sudo leaks -nocontext -nostacks process | grep total
where process is the name of a process you suspect of leaking memory. Almost every process will leak some memory; the question is how much, and especially how much the leak increases with time. I can’t be more specific. See the  leaks(1) man page and the Apple developer documentation for details.

  • System Memory Usage:  What Eats My Free Memory?

For some time, I have noticed that my computer gets slower the longer I leave it on and do not restart.
Recently, I began displaying system memory usage from the activitiy monitor to see what's going on.
I noticed that no matter what I do, the Inactve Memory grows and the free memory disappears.
I thought it was due to memory hogs like Photoshop, FCP, etc.  But even when I quit those programs, the Inactive Memory remains large and only the Active Memory shrinks.
The Inactive Memory grows even (especially?) when I perform finder operations, like previewing file contents in the finder.
Eventually, I get to the point where the free memory disappears and the machine begins to slow down (or at least seems to).
What's going on and what, if anything can I do to keep this from happening?
I'm running an iMac3.4GHz Intel Core i7 with 8 Gigs of RAM and OS 10.6.8.

Thanks.  I'm not sure what you mean by "screen saver without energy saver" overnight.  My settings are screen saver after about 30 minutes, computer sleep after 1 hour.  Do you mean run the computer sleep slider up to "Never?"
    Otherwise:
--I don't use any of the programs you mentioned.
--I don't think I've ever seen Spotlight indexing
--Time Machine runs every hour of course, but nothing seems to change when it does.
--My 2 TB hard drive is only about 45% full.
--I usually quit programs, and especially Photoshop, when not in use.
--I do reboot occasionally, usually when I see Free Memory disappear.  This is usually every few days.
--I use Time Machine to backup using default settings.  My 2 TB drive is about 55% full.
I'll slide the energy saver slider over to "never" per the above and see how things go after a few days.
    Thanks for your help

  • System memory usage question

I'm confused by the system memory usage as seen with the activity monitor. This is my first mac so i'm used to using windows. I see there is 5 categories: Wired, Active, inactive, used and free. Is inactive and free the same thing? I'm just trying to gauge how much ram I use and if it's worth it to upgrade to 1Gb from 512. Thanks.
    13.3" White Macbook (2.0 GHz, 512RAM)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Wired memory
This information can't be cached to disk, so it must stay in RAM. The amount depends on what applications you are using.
    Active memory
This information is currently in RAM and actively being used.
    Inactive memory
This information is no longer being used and has been cached to disk, but it will remain in RAM until another application needs the space. Leaving this information in RAM is to your advantage if you (or a client of your computer) come back to it later.
    Free memory
This memory is not being used.

and i'd say that more memory is always useful in OS X

  • How to analyse the main memory usage in SAP ERP systems?

    Dear expert,
I'm doing a research work about analysing the main memory usage in SAP ERP systems.
I would like to find out what is load in buffers and when. That means, which process have the control of these memories and which are always performing something, tables loaded, and so on. Becuase I tried to isolate the space needed by a simple webservice call (create one material) in my test system, but even after a $SYN there are something stored in the buffers. I use a BAPI to avoid the execution of the SAPGUI and its repercussion in the system (I know the BAPI called uses resources too, but when I run this BAPI to get the statistics, it's like ST02, I get different values). Could someone help me or recommend something specific to read? Thanks a lot in advance.

    Dear expert,
Thanks a lot for your answer. The point is now that I want to isolate the memory used by a webservice that I call, I mean, I would like to know how many memory is this webservice using in each buffer. And could you tell me where could I read something about the order that things happen in SAP System when a webservice is called (always memory related), that's which steps are done to store data in buffers and so on. Thanks in advance.

  • How to minimize memory usage with VM settings

Using JDK 1.4.2, I am trying to minimize the memory usage of my application.
Our GUI application consumes about ~20MB of heap space during normal operation, but it can easily grow to 50MB in some rare cases (Special feature accessed by user).
We have to be able to run multiple instances (separate process/VMs) of this application on low end Windows PCs.
The applications don't usually run for very long (less than 8 hours).
    Here is my problem.
If I set the -Xms=20M -Xmx=64M, it works fine, but the GC is not very aggressive and soon, the application starts using a lot of memory, even if it is not really needed. And it never returns the memory to Windows OS.
So each VM take more memory than really needed, which causes significant swapping on these low end PC (little RAM available).
If I reduce the -Xmx flag, than I run out of memory in the rare cases where I need the full memory.
Ideally, I would like to configure the GC to be more aggressive, i.e. the GC should collect instead of getting additional memory from the OS when possible.
I read a few papers on Sun's web site about HotSpot tunning, but most of them are geared for large servers.
    Thanks!
    Francois

And you are using the task manager to determine how "much" memory is being used correct?
I suggest that you search out and read the numerous threads on this site that discuss that subject.

    Hi lcerni,
According to your description, my understanding is that you could not access the system settings inside SQL Reporting service application.
There is a blog, the issue 3 is similar with your issue, please take a look at:
