System settings regularly get lost

Every day or so I find the settings for mouse buttons have disappeared. At one point Time Machine was also turned off without my knowing it. Has anyone else had this happen?

According to your description, my understanding is that you could not access the system settings inside SQL Reporting service application.
There is a blog, the issue 3 is similar with your issue, please take a look at:

We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple.
Have you tried closing all apps via the iPad's multitasking bar and then doing a soft-reset and seeing that helps ? To close all apps :
iOS 7: double-click the home button to open the taskbar, and then swipe or drag each app's screen from there up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
iOS 6 and below : from the home screen (i.e. not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

This is really unfortunate. I'm sorry that nothing works. I was going to mention holding down the power button and doing a force shutdown but you already did that. You might need to take it into the Apple store. I don't know if booting into safe mode would help. You would have to turn off the machine again, hit the start button and hold down the shift key after you hear the tone, but normally you would let go of the shift key when you see the apple logo and spining wheel. Maybe by holding down the shift key after you here the tone will cause the screen to come back on? The other option is to start up from the 'install disk' if your machine came with one. You would insert the disk, then shut down the computer, and hold down the C key right after hitting the start button.

Genius bar told me to erase the harddisk and install OSX Maverick again. This has not changed the problems with the system settings

You need to Repartition the drive as One partition which will erase all data from it and then reinstall OS X. then with the initial setup system you chose the language on the first screen that comes up. That sets the language for the whole system.
There is no other way of completely removing certain information created by a previous owner. this hold strue whether you are selling or give a Mac to someone.
To do the repartitioning you need to use the Online Internet Recovery system, if the Mac came with Lion 10.7 or above, or from the original system reinstall discs that came with it when it was new.

Windows updates removes all tabs and tab groups so I have to regularly do a system restore to get them back.

The preinstalled apps, those that came as part of the iOS, cannot be deleted and will not shake or provide the black circle-X for deletion.
Others should do that if you touch and hold for a few seconds.
If they are not, do a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if that appears.

I lost my system settings

I clicked on my system settings on the dock, picked it up by mistake and it diappeared in another application. Now I can´t find it again. Does anyone know, how I can get it back?

The application System Preferences should be in your Applications folder. I just tried dragging the icon off the Dock, making it disappear, and restored it by dragging from the Applications folder.
If it isn't in your Applications folder, and you can't find it elsewhere, then it is apparently gone. You would have to reinstall from your install disc, unless you have a system backup on, say, an external drive.

Try doing a SMC and PRAM resets. Sometimes it takes 2-3 attempts for them to work so be a little persistent if they fail the first time.
SMC RESET
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
Release the power button.
Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
PRAM RESET
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Automating system settings in FCP 7 using Automator

Hi all,
I feel like a child writing this, but anyways...
Trying to write an Automator macro to streamline resetting my autosave folders in Final Cut Pro, since I change them everytime I switch to another project (to simplify backup). There are 4 different things that have to be changed when I do this. Since they all go to the same location. I figured I should only set this once and let the Mac do the rest.
What I have already done is have the script ask me for the file location (e.g. "/Volumes/Backup1-A/EOTN/FCP files/") and I afterwards "Set Value of Variable" as "FCPPath". Then I recorded myself switching to Final Cut, hitting a hotkey to bring up the System settings window, click the first option, and when Finder pops down, I hit "/" for the "Go to Folder" option. Here is where I am stuck.
I am totally lost (and a little frustrated, so pardon my hostility). All the Finder modules don't apply to an "in-application" finder window.
The idea of a simple "Write blank as text" option in Automator has thusfar eluded my simple mind. So I first use a "Get Value of Variable" from "FCPPath". Then I pass that to a "Run AppleScript" module. However, any command (write, display, type,) doesn't want to work. I am stuck thinking it should be as easy as:
on run {FCPPath}
write FCPPath as text
return FCPPath
end run
But I get generic error messages telling me to check my processes.
Could anyone direct me how to write the value of a variable (containing a file path) into the "Go To folder" text field within a "Save as" dialog box in FCP?

System Settings-Audio Capture

In FCE, trying to capture VHS via DV converter box. The sound is not coming over. In system settings/scratch disk (internal hard drive) the audio capture is grayed out. Analog RCA composite video & stereo audio connectors in place. How do I get my sound?

You can't get audio during capture as firewire has control.
Use the audio from the play device if you need to hear what's happening. You will notice latency on the FCE capture window, that's normal as well.

Is there a way to default scratch disks in system settings?

This might be elementary, but is there a way to default the scratch disks in system settings to match the project that you are currently working on?
What I mean is when I switch from project to project my auto save files get all jumbled up.. then when I really needed to retrieve one I had to search them out in folders from different projects.... it was a mess
So as I have it now.. I have to open a project then go to system settings and switch all my scratch disks accordingly.. but I always forget to do this not to mention that it is a pain in the *** and time consuming..

I just create one master file for all my FCP projects inside it there is the autosave folder, thumbnail and waveforme cache folders.. then inside each one FCP automatically creates a seperate folder with your projects name.. so you can find them easily

Look iTunes>Preferences>Devices...is a backup listed for your iPhone 5 dated BEFORE you restored your iPhone 4 backup to your iPhone 5? If not, your data is gone. If there is a backup, on your iPhone 5: Settings>General>Reset>Erase All Content & Settings. You should now be able to restore that backup, if it exists, to your iPhone 5.
