System Sleep During iTunes Play

Why doesn't iTunes override my system sleep settings when it's playing music? When iTunes plays videos, the computer stays awake regardless of sleep settings; why won't it stay awake when playing music?

Recovery Mode
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

You can use the "psshutdown" command-line tool to have your machine sleep/hibernate/shutdown after a timeout or set time.

Avoiding system sleep during export in FCPx 10.1

Hi There -
I'm using a Mac Pro 6,1 (late 2013) and Mavericks 10.9.2. I set a 10 minute 1080p movie to export, left my desk for 20 minutes, and when I came back, the computer had gone to sleep with 95% of the movie exported. I sat for another 10 minutes and the movie would not finish exporting.
I would like to change the settings on my computer to prevent the Mac Pro from sleeping when it is doing a key Final Cut Pro X task like rendering or exporting.
After doing some research, I'm going to switch on "Prevent App Nap" under get info for Final Cut Pro X. I'm posting here to see if anyone has any other experience or suggestions!

"Prevent App Nap" should always be checked for FCP X, so that is a good move.
HOWEVER, this will NOT prevent your mac from going to sleep.
You need to go to System Preferences->Energy Saver and change the settings for "Computer Sleep".
If in doubt, set it to "Never".

Hi there, i had the exact same problem and posted a thread a few above yours, and these forums wasnt much help nobody replied, so i did a bit of research and followed all the intructions on this site: http://www.gearsoftware.com/cfknowledgebase/articledisplay.cfm?articleid=296
If you follow the steps very carefully and do as each says, this will solve your problem.. Now i am very happy i can actually install iTunes and use it for my iPod.
Remember to be carefully with the steps as the things you will be deleting are very important to your comp.

Computer sleeps while iTunes is playing

Just like the title says, my Mac goes to sleep even when iTunes is playing. This is pretty ludicrous. Is there anyway to prevent this other than changing my power savings settings to never let my Mac go to sleep? I don't want to do that, I want my computer to go to sleep when I am not using it.
This sure seems like a bug. I am running the newest version of iTunes as well as Lion. Thanks for all your help.
My current energy saver settings are:
Computer Sleep: 15 min
Display Sleep: 15 min
Put hard disks to sleep when possible - yes
wake for network access - yes
allow power button to put the computer to sleep - yes
start up automatically after a power failure - no
restart automaticall if the computer freezes - no
Again, I would rather not have to change these settings in order to keep iTunes playing. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Jake, did you find any solution? I'm having exactly the same problem, though I just upgraded to OSX 10.8.2. I have basically all the same settings as you have. In fact I did try unchecking the "put hard disk to sleep whenever possible" for a while, but didn't help. Still goes to sleep after about 1 hour of otherwise inactivity (i.e only itunes playing). This has got to be a bug, and seems to be affecting a lot of people. I'll keep an eye on this topic.

I recently had to reinstall my software for a
dell computer a dell latitude d 830, then after installing all of my software and such including itunes the player did well even record to disks with no problems now that my system has done alot of updating of system files....now the itunes does not burn to my cd...error message 2131 this time ..this has occurred several times on this sytem and and as well as other system this one has window vista 64 bit home prem. why is the itunes not working to burn my disks
it worked fine before the updates to the system and the itunes software is up dated as well...can someone suggest something

The 2131 usually indicates firmware needs to be updated on a drive.
Head to your drivers and downloads page for your latitude at Dell, and check for updates to your firmware for your optical drives. If you're behind and you update, does that clear up the 2131?

IMac crushing when simultaneously online + listening iTunes + playing chest

I have a brand new iMac ( 2.4 GHZ, Intel Core 2 Duo, OS X 10.5.4). Purchased on August this year in Beijing, China.
Each and every time I am simultaneously online + listening to iTunes + playing chest my iMac crushes !
This happens always when above three things (applications) are run together.
During the "crush" all applications are on hold, you can't use keyboard neither the mouse and there is this load and continues sound " dum dum dum..." which you can't in anyway turn off or reduce its volume. The only way to get iMac " back" is to turn it OFF !!
Now this is not really a thing that you would expect to have on the new iMac.
Local Apple services provider has no clue what seems to be the problem.
Anyone out there with a clue how to fix this issue?

Out of 1 GB memory I still have 560MB free of use.
I do understand that application use some memory, but this is brand new iMac!
I do not use it for any gaming, don't download any music or movies from Internet. So having such bizarre problem makes me wonder. Specially when in Beijing there is no real Apple service provider. Everyone talks about " unstable softwares" or "reseting system" (sic !!). I did not buy a PC!
So the question remains. Unless my iMac is one of the million that requires to add RESET BUTTON.

Prevent monitor going to sleep during long slideshows. It's very annoyng having to 'shake' your mouse every few minutes to prevent screen blackout.
Some programs do that (e.g. BSPlayer when playing movies).

Since you can isolate when the issue happened the first thing to consider is doing a system restore to a time before the issue happened.

Sleep freeze when playing games

i have a MAC OS X panther version 10.3.9 and during gameplay, i play world of warcraft, it goes to sleep while i play and thereby freezing the game and then i have to force quit it and start all over and it gets really annoying after a while and i tried cleaning where air get through and it kept going to sleep other players online get mad at me because i always get disonnected Also sometimes it even goes to sleep during regular use I have already email the game developers and they told me to get a temperature monitor and i noticed that it goes to sleep when it reaches a maximum of at least 85 degrees
Does anyone know what i should do?

I'm sorry to hear that - it doesn't sound good at all that you tried to cool it, but it still overheats. You should click on the "Support" tab at the top of this page, scroll down until on the right side you see "About Your Support Coverage," enter your iMac's serial number in the box, and click the "Go" button to find out how long your first generation iMac G5 is still under warranty.
If still under warranty, call Apple to start a service ticket on it immediately, and make a note of the ticket number they give you. If not still under warranty, and you do not have an AppleCare Protection Plan, you should have it checked out by an Apple certified repair technician to see if it will be covered under the "iMac G5 Repair Extension Program" that I mentioned previously in an above post.
I would be certain of that possibility of free service under the special program, prior to beginning to work on it myself. If you are denied any free service, then it wouldn't matter any more and you can fiddle with it to your heart's content. Remember that with a valuable lcd display, your iMac will still have value, so be careful not to treat it as if it's worthless.
The first gen iMac G5 is user serviceable without impacting the warranty at all, as long as your work is confined to the areas accessed in the Do-It-Yourself Instructions. As an example, since those instructions do not include how to remove the lcd display, your warranty could be voided if you were to remove it. Anything that is listed as user serviceable in those instructions should be relatively easy for most owners to do for themselves, but most people can realize how far there own ability extends by reading those instructions. Rentals can only play on one device/computer at a time. Have you tried to play on the computer and still have that window open?
Have you transferred the rental to iPod/iPhone or iPad to watch?
