System slow/clean installed
Hello and thanks for taking a peek in here:
I run a 27 inch mid 2010 imac w/ 2.93ghz i7 and 16gb 1333 mhz ddr3 running lion
My system suddenly got a whole lot slower after a recent power outage (the system was UPSed but the UPS gave out before power was restored so it was shut down quite nasitly
My first thought was a hard drive issue, since everything seemed VERY slow, i then launched from my previous leopard install disk, went into disk utility, and erased the hard drive.
I then did a clean install, and I have the same issue. Response time for anything clicked is in the minutes, web pages open very slowly, youtube videos don't show up at all.
When i took a look recently at "about this mac" The memory said 16gb??? (with the questionmarks there) So i popped in the original 2x2gb sticks that came with the mac and removed the user-installed ram. The questionmarks are gone and i'm down to 4gb of ram.
I also went into the disk utility, checked disk and persmissions without a hitch.
The mac takes over 10 minutes to boot up now.
When I click any menu, it takes 2-5 minutes for that menu to open
when I open an app, it bobs up and down for 2 mins, then stops, then opens 5 minutes later.
Connecting to wifi or bluetooth devices gets stuck on the "connecting" part for ages.
Cpu load is under 1%
Memory is 80% free
disk acitivty looks normal, from time to time it can read/write at over 20mb/s
what now?
PS: I bought this mac around 1 year ago, having it sent in to apple is impossible as I live in a 3rd world country with very annoying customs regulations. It would litterally cost me the price of a new imac to have it sent in.
PPS: "About this mac" memory option states:
"your mac contains 0 memory slots, each of which accepts a ??? memory module
No user-installable memory slots exist."
in the general window, it does state that I have 4gb of ram...

Even if they are not a big problem, can anyone tell me how to get rid of the Palm and HP startup items. They are from old devices that I do not have anymore, and I would like to eradicate them from my system.Startup items are in /Library/StartupItems/
You can delete them if you are an admin user. However it doesn't remove the actual software. The safest way to do that is to either use the manufacturers uninstaller or try to find uninstall steps listed on a forum or support site.
I'm inclear on 'Oplmgr' check that is up to date if you can, since it is using the old way to load a startup job.
Palm desktop is probably version dependant (check what you have)…
http://kb.hpwebos.com/wps/portal/kb/common/article/5916_en.html
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/505278?start=0&tstart=0
Soundflower looks out of date? Grab the installer (with an uninstaller IIRC) and update or remove it.
LogMe In, TeamViewer & Splashtop are running jobs in the system level too, so I'd spend time checking they are up to date or removed if they are not needed.
The Launch Daemons and Launch Agents are 'system level, with your own user version too - User Launch Agents.
I would clean out the failed background job…
[failed] [email protected]
It will be stored at…
~/Library/LaunchAgents/[email protected]
Use the Finders 'Go Menu > Go to Folder…' to open the hidden ~/Library & look in the LaunchAgents folder for the .plist & delete it.
Reboot for the Startup items to be unloaded. -
Where would the Bookmarks be filed in my system backup? Can I move them to the new system (Internal drive)?
Hi drnels,
Are you saying you still have access to the backup? If you do, you should take a look at [[Backing up your information]]. It will show you where all of your personal information is stored in Firefox and how you can copy it to a new install.
Hopefully this helps! -
Clean Install or keep messing up with old system.
Hi,
I have been learning about Arch for a while - mostly trying different things and learning commands and how it works. In this learning process, I install a lot of things that may not be required in long run or make system more resource intensive or just cluttered. If you have been in such a situation, Is it a good idea to start afresh or keep messing up old system and clean install should be last resort? I often find clean install a lot easier to fix but it does require some time to re install all the system back.
Thanks.There shouldn't be a need to reinstall.
If you're not already familiar with all of pacman's bells and whistles now is a good time to learn. There are various switches that will list packages that are no longer needed (eg, installed as a dependency to a package that is now gone).
Not long ago I went though the full list of all packages installed to do some housecleaning. It took a little bit of effort, but I ended up learning more about what was on my system. I learned even more when I removed something that I guess I needed! -
With the Clean Install of Leopard System Slowness
I have a MacBook Pro 2.0 Core Duo 2GB RAM (first generation)Mac OS 10.5.1 w/recent updates.
Initially, I did an upgrade from Tiger to Leo and there was no slowness. I was asked one of the external audio interface manufacturers that their driver might not work properly if upgraded from Tiger to Leo (without clean install). It needs a clean install so I performed a clean install of Leopard.
Now, my MacBook Pro is slow when I try to run (start) an applications e.g. Logic Pro 8 or when I try to navigate through folders. There is a delay in displaying icons or opening files.
Are there any services or back ground applications that I can turn off? Has anyone else experience similar issue?
Thanks
Mitchthats happening all the time. it is not a one time thing. if there was a run away process it should get killed when a reboot is performed right?
it appears that i have to modify Leo so that only needed services and apps running but not sure which one to kill -

MBP 2012 still slow after clean install of Yosemite
Hello,
I'm hoping someone can help me, I've done just about everything I can find online to get my MBP to work like it used to. After unsuccessful attempts at different workarounds, I decided to wipe everything perform a clean install of Yosemite.
Still no luck!! #nobueno
Problem description:
After clean install of Yosemite, my MacBook Pro (2012) continues to run at a snailspace. Very slow!

Feb 18, 2015, 10:03:37 AM Self test - passed
Feb 18, 2015, 09:55:07 AM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/mbpluginhost_2015-02-18-095507_[redacted].crash1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/libexec;clear;cd;p=(1248 ' 0.5 0.25 10 1000 15 5120 1000 25000 1 1 0 100 ' 51 25600 4 10 25 5120 102400 1000 25 1000 150 40 500 300 85 25 20480 262144 20 2000 exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I may not agree with them.

Same issue here I have done clean installs using Super Duper (Back-up All Fresh clean slate...)
and still Mavericks is getting slower and slower.....
Using Gimp it now takes 5 mins to export a .jpeg file 500k !
OSX 10.9.1
Processor 2.26ghz
Ram 2gb
250gb HD 196gbfree
Even just now I did a clean install and i'm seeing the spinning beach ball with Firefox, and it's slow to opening up volumes.
This is Ridiculous Apple! -
Do i need any of the operating system disks if I clean install?
My MAcbook pro is getting serously slow esp on the internet. So from what I understand the best method is a clean install.
However I do not have any of the previous operating system disks like Snow leopard and Lion. I am currently using Mavericks.
My worry is that the computer will go back to it's original operating system (i think Tiger), and I will not be able to update to MAvericks because I don't have any of the operatings disks before that.
Or maybe I don't need them? I have backed up everytjing on my computer and used time machine as a back up.
Thanks in advance,
LDid you do an Over the Top install? That is where you reinstall right over OS X that is already on your system.
If you did and it ran fine for a day or so I suspect you are having some hard drive troubles. With an over the top install that replaces system files, OS X files, and makes them fresh. But if after a short while the system starts to run poorly again that comes from some corruption of those files. That only happens when there is drive problems.
If after doing a real clean install, first erasing everything off your system with Disk Utility, you still are having slow downs first thing I'd do is check out the drive for errors and personally I'd replace the drive.

Hi,
I did reinstalled the computer yesterday. It seemed to work fine, and a lot faster. Unfortunately today it is back to a slow pace again. I will try the next step to clean install.
Thank youlowluster for your advice too. Very helpful. I will let you know how it goes... -
IChat with clean install of Lion, video slow on Core2 Duo
After a clean install of Lion on a newer iMac things are MUCH faster than when I had installed it OVER Snow Leopard.
However, ichat video is about 1 second slower than the audio and frame rates (of my own video) are about 5 frames per second.
Full screen makes it worse.
Anyone have any ideas? I have not installed any files or apps (except Flash for safari).... this is a FRESH Lion install from the Apple USB Lion. Wiped drive prior to install.
Definitely frustrated with 10.7.... and I have it on 3 different Macs.... wishing I didn't.OK, you're right. I wish Apple would get rid of the Applications Folder in the User Folder.
If you haven't read this yet:
How to use Migration assistant to transfer files from another Mac
I still believe you are relatively safe in not porting over trouble from your previous System.
What trouble are you having -
Re: Satellite A500 slow even after clean install of Windows7
My laptop suddenly slowed down hugely about 4 weeks ago and seemed to have a virus problem causing a BSOD. Any attempts to solve this were unsuccessful so we have just done a clean install of Windows7 in the hope of solving the speed issue.
However it still takes several seconds to respond to each mouse click at a stage where only Bullguard anti-virus and Windows 7 are installed on the laptop.
I've checked that the latest BIOS is installed v1.90.
I've checked that all device drivers are up to date.
I've checked the hard drive for faults and bad segments.
Please can anyone offer help or advice?
Many thanks.Hi
Toshiba recovery disk allows you to set the notebook back to factory settings.
So using recovery disk you will get the same state like at the first day of purchase.
But nobody can say if your notebook would run faster after recovery procedure.
Usually the notebook should work properly also with installed Win 7
But if the notebook will work correctly after the installation of Recovery disk, then there must be something wrong with the installed Win 7 system. -
SLOW and SLUGGISH after clean install PLEASE HELP!
My Macbook Pro started acting slugggish a few nights ago, and it seemed after a reboot that it ran better, but quickly slowed down. I ran permissions, disk repair, reset the PRAM the SMC and etc... nothing helped. I tried to do a Time Machine restore and after 10 hours of SLOW restoration (it still had 70 hours left) i decided to do a CLEAN INSTAL of Yosemite 10.10.
Same thing, takes over 10 minutes to boot up and i click on something and the beach ball will spin for a minute.
Disk Utility says everything is OK.... but even the internet is sluggish as if the entire machine is not processing the information fast enough.
ANY HELP is greatly appreciated as this is on day 4.
Thanks
SteveCLEAN INSTALL took over 8 hours to complete, as if everything is running in slow mode.
Also, i ran this app as i see most ask for it.

After receiving an error when I try to install the latest update of OS-X, I took my laptop to oour schools IT dept. They tried to run the update in safe mode and then they got an error saying the system could not find the hard drive. Now they want to run a clean install which loses 1000's of docs and pictures. I have Block I exams in med school next Monday and all of my notes and slides are on that hard drive.
The IT dept took the hard drive out and tried to back it up and they said they other computer could not connect or find my hard drive.
Major panic....
I have Norton antivirus and have never found any viruses on the system. I also have a program called ExamSoft which some other students here have noted they had similar crashes. Not sure if that is the issue...Several take home messages here:
always back up before you update.
always back up anything you don't want to lose. Kind of like flossing. Only floss the teeth you don't want to lose.
Norton is very, very bad software, and you should get rid of it.
You don't need antivirus software on your mac. Antivirus software on macs causes more trouble than it is worth.
Your hard drive may be failing and thus may not be salvageable.
You could try booting into the recovery partition and seeing if you can repair your hard drive.
If that doesn't work, then there is a small chance that a third party utility (like Disk Warrior or TechTool) might be able to fix your drive (if it is not failing).
If that doesn't work, you may be able to send your drive and a lot of cash to a drive recovery service and see if they can get your files off it.
In the mean time, get notes and slides from a (smart) friend. -
One of my main goals is to be able to run a Windows application on my iMac, purchased in July, 2012, with the Intel 2.5Ghz i5, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive. At first I installed Boot Camp and then Win 7, then the application I need to run, and I don't recall having problems. But I tired of the required reboot each time and got greedy and needy - so I installed VMWare Fusion, only to be told that the W7 software I use won't work with Fusion, but it will with Parallels! So, I was able to get Parallels at a discount (because I had Fusion), and decided I would import Boot Camp into Parallels.
Then the problems began. I suspect I did something I shouldn't have during this process, but to shorten the story I did a clean install of ML, set up iCloud, and monitored Console for problems. And problems there were - lots of them, and they all seemed to reference iCloud in some way. Since I have the ML installer on a thumb drive I thought I'd see what happened if I did another clean install, but this time I'd ignore iCould altogether (yes, I have everything backed up to mypcback.com) and proceeded. As before, the errors streamed down Console's face as if it were my own. I've run OnyX, which seemed to help, but many of the issues persist. I'm at a loss as how to proceed other than invoke Apple Support, which, BTW, is not covered under Warranty.
I need to have a stable ML platform before I start using W7 and refuse to believe that the OSX is "just buggy." Can someone help. I have no other iDevices that need to be synced, and really don't see the need to set up iCloud. Noone else than I use the iMac. It should be pretty simple to create a stable OSX so I can go where I need to go. I realize 4GB is not a lot of memory and will look into that. For the moment, I can stip down Win 7, and OSX for that matter, to free up memory. I didn't want to included a bunch of log files, but I will if someone thinks that it would be helpful.
The follow are the latest entries into my system log file, after I lost connection to the internet, and then regained connection after rebooting my cable modem:

This DNS change is only the lastest manifestation of what seems like an endless list. Can anybody give me some direction before I have to pay Apple to fix what I think they broke themselvesa?!? BTW, I am not a tech. Thanking everyone who read this and especially to anyone who can help.Linc, thanks for the tips. I knew you'd have a good method. I asked for it because I have learned of some of the myths about OSX and it's need (or lack thereof) to be scrubbed, rinsed, and blown dry; suckering folks into buying all manner of utilities to keep your Mac spiffy at all times, when in fact it rarely needs any intervention at all because of its Unix background. In fact, I rarely shut mine down and I've learned that the system is actually designed to be left running under most circumstances.
To keep your data secure the three most important things to know is backup, backup, backup. I use a third-party, cloud-based back-up system. It can automatically make backups every hour if that's what I want and I can supplement that anytime by simply dropping a file into the application's desktop interface.
Since I last posted my Mac has been running smoothly and I've been able to install Parallels and Windows 7, as well as the VantagePoint software I mentioned. Though it crashed once this morning and I submit one line from the log file:
12/20/12 10:31:00.639 AM appleeventsd[54]: BUG in libdispatch: 12C60 - 1510 - 0x4
After a reboot, log entries spewed all manner of troubling messages, from those that are osascript-related to broken forks, etc. but as far as I know there were no actual crash logs generated until this afternoon, one being just a few minutes ago. Linc, would you be so kind to take a look and tell me if there's something I need to do?

Can't upgrade or clean install new Blackberry Link in Win 8 32 bit system
Hi Helpers,
I cant install the New BB Link version on my system - (the previous version ran perfectly).
Whether I try to update or clean install (old version now uninstalled). I get a pane saying that Microsoft visual C ++ 2008 Sp1 redistributable - W8 needs to be installed first.
The process starts that install - but alwayys fails. After that the BB Link install just closes.
I can't seem to attach any screenshots (be helpful to be able to 'navigate' to them rather than type in a path). But I havepasted below the full txt contained in the 'windows installer' pane that appears when the install fails.
Can anyone suggest any way to correct this problem please? Btw, the new BB Link installs perfectly onto Windows 7.
Thanks in anticipation. (On trying to post, I was informed that some invalid HTML has been removed - presumably that was in the 'paste' but I've no idea what it was or whether it affects anything, sorry).
Regards, gil69.
