System Slow during Arabesque Screensaver with Login Window
Hello!
Has anyone else noticed a problem with the screen savers in 10.9?
I put my Early 2013 15" Retina MBP to screen saver with login window security settings enabled (only open applications are Mail, FireFox, and Terminal). Upon returning and waking it from screen saver, sometimes the screensaver doesn't disengage and display my desktop background image when the login window appears. What happens is Arabaesque keeps running in the background behind the login window, and slows the entire system down. Mouse movements and keyboard inputs are delayed significantly. This did not happen in 10.8.x.
I can't reproduce this all of the time, but it's annoying enough when it does happen. I did file a bug report with Apple on it, but I was just curious if anyone else had a similar problem?
Yes, I have this problem too (and I imagine that every single person who uses the Arabesque screensaver has the exact same problem). The strange thing is that apparently there has been a bug like this with the Arabesque screensaver after every new release of OS X. Maybe it's like a running gag or something at Apple.
The problem on my 2012 rMBP 15" is that the framerate fluctuates between very slow and normal, and this will carry over even to the typing in of the password to unlock the machine (it can take one or two seconds for the system to recognize a keystroke even). On my late 2012 27" iMac, the problem is that there is a big black square that uglifies the whole thing (but doesn't drop in framerate). Both systems have top of the line Core i7's and the best discrete graphics cards available at purchase.

Can't login, the system through me back to the login window.
I need help. Once I tried to login under admin account but the system through me out after accepting a psw. It happens like it checks the psw shows the blue screen and then return to the login window. Meantime I can succesfully log in under another user account. I tried to change psw and login but it doesn't help. The system is friendly accepting the admin psw for all the possible aims but not the login. Before that happend the system was blaiming me for overfulled hard drive. Now I cleaned it but that doens't help. What shall I do, in order to log in, what is wrong?
I have a time machine copy but recovery of admin user folder didn't help. Many thanks in advance for your assistance!You can use the install DVD to reset the password, repair the disk and repair permissions. If you don't have the install DVD you could try the following.
Print the following and then follow these instructions very carefully - at each stage wait for processes to complete - spaces are important:
1 - shutdown
2 - start in single user mode by holding command (Apple key) and S while it starts
3 - type the following and hit the return key to repair the disk
/sbin/fsck -fy
4 - type the following and hit the return key
/sbin/mount -uw /
5 - type the following and hit the return key
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
5 - type the following and hit the return key
shutdown -h now
6 - start the Mac
7 - The above tricks the Mac into thinking it is starting for the first time. Follow the various processes as normal but DO NOT use a name that has been used on the Mac before. It will set up a new admin account without removing existing accounts with different names.
8 - Use the new admin account
9 - If necessary enable the root user (see Mac help) to reset passwords on other accounts. -
I teach in a computer lab that is mostly emacs connected to a server. Students log in individually so when there is no one using each machine, it remains on the login window.
I would like that window to go to a screensaver or even to sleep rather than just sit on for long periods. I don't see how to set a screensaver when the computer is not logged in to an account.
Anyone figured this out?
Peter Jonesloginsaver.sh:

Screensaver at Login Window?
Is it possible to set a screensaver to run when no user is logged in?
My screensaver doesn't seem to do that. The screen can sit on the login window forever and the screensaver will never kick in. However, the monitor and computer will sleep at the scheduled times, so I guess that is not too bad.

by mistake I've syncronized lots of photos from my Windows PC to my iPad 2 during the first connection thru iTunes. Now I can not delete those phtos because the DELETE button, which appears in RED, doesn't do anything. Any suggestions? Tks,
No such problem when doing so with my iPhone or iPad. This is not normal, so something is wrong.
The only thing I can suggest is restoring your iPad with iTunes. You can try restoring from your iPad's backup first - photos transferred from your computer aren't included with the backup but settings are. Have Sync Photos under the Photos tab deselected before selecting Restore. -
System slow during loading data from source system
hi,
I am trying to load master data from r/3 into bw in quality envirnoment by means of a process chain. The problem is it being a master data load is consuming a lot of time. My development and quality environments are maintained on the same server. I doubt about this being something related to memory. If anybody could mention the ways through which memory can be monitored along with the reason for the slow nature of the system would be very helpful.
Source system: R/3.
Environment : Q03(quality)
Load : Master data(full load)Hi,
I will suggest you to check a few places where you can see the status
1) SM37 job log (In source system if load is from R/3 or in BW if its a datamart load) (give request name) and it should give you the details about the request. If its active make sure that the job log is getting updated at frequent intervals.
Also see if there is any 'sysfail' for any datapacket in SM37.
2) SM66 get the job details (server name PID etc from SM37) and see in SM66 if the job is running or not. (In source system if load is from R/3 or in BW if its a datamart load). See if its accessing/updating some tables or is not doing anything at all.
3) RSMO see what is available in details tab. It may be in update rules.
4) ST22 check if any short dump has occured.(In source system if load is from R/3 or in BW if its a datamart load)
5) SM58 and BD87 for pending tRFCs.
Once you identify you can rectify the error.
If all the records are in PSA you can pull it from the PSA to target. Else you may have to pull it again from source infoprovider.
If its running and if you are able to see it active in SM66 you can wait for some time to let it finish. You can also try SM50 / SM51 to see what is happening in the system level like reading/inserting tables etc.
If you feel its active and running you can verify by checking if the number of records has increased in the data tables.
Thanks,
JituK -
Changing the Screen Saver for the Login Window
I've found how I can change the WALLPAPER for the LOGIN Window.
How can I change the screensaver from the default to one that I have installed?
TECH INFO:
OS X 10.6.2
Admin account has desired screensaver loaded and activated.
The screensaver I'm wanting to have as the login window screensaver is MARINE AQUARIUM 3.0 (414)
THANKS!ok, what you suggested definitely does NOT work as is. what does work as I found by doing a little googling is adding two entries specifically concerning the screensaver over login window to /library/preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist. Namely, you need to add the keys loginWindowIdleTime and loginWindowModulePath. no other new entries are needed.
for example, the following/library/preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist works for me.
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
<key>loginWindowIdleTime</key>
<integer>60</integer>
<key>loginWindowModulePath</key>
<string>/System/Library/Screen Savers/Nature Patterns.slideSaver</string>
<key>moduleDict</key>
<dict>
<key>moduleName</key>
<string>Skyrocket</string>
<key>path</key>
<string>System/Library/Screen Savers/Nature Patterns.slideSaver</string>
<key>type</key>
<integer>0</integer>
</dict>
</dict>
</plist>
so far i have not been able to make it work with any 3rd party screensavers even placed in /system/library/screensavers. launchd throws up an error when I try. still, this is MUCH better than nothing so thank you for letting us know about this. -
Input source in Login Window - how to change?
Hello,
I have a Belgian keyboard and I need my default input source to be Belgian.
Problem with Login Window : since I installed Mavericks the default input source in the Login Window is always "U.S." In the upper right corner of that screen I can change it to Belgian but how do I change it * permanently * to Belgian ?
Thanks for any help available.I am convinced that by entering the right values in
Macintosh HD>Library>Preferences>com.apple.HIToolbox.plist
you can turn around the problem.
But this is a bug. So instead of starting tinkering with that plist I'm waiting for these guys in Cupertino to come up with an official fix in the upcoming release 10.9.1 (some time November, I am told) or 10.9.2 (some time before year-end, as the rumor has it). -
Magic Trackpad's One Finger "Tap to Click" Not Working in Login Window?
Magic Trackpad's *One Finger* "Tap to Click" Not Working in Login Window:
All of my iMac's accounts have *One Finger* "Tap to Click" turned on (checked) in System Preferences. However, in the Login Window where the user decides which account to login to, the Magic Trackpad's clicking ability does not work even though moving the arrow does work. How do I turn on the Magic Trackpad's ability to click in the Login Window?After accidentally pressing down on the Magic Trackpad, I realized the trackpad has tactile feedback, that is, it is a big button that can be pressed down and pop back up like old computer mice. Though this will allow the trackpad to select the account I want to open in the Login Window, it still doesn't explain why "tap to click" isn't working in the Login Window. Nevertheless, my question can be considered as answered.

How to start a application with a login window?
hi there
does anyone have any idea on how to start an application with a login window? a login window is the first frame or window to be displayed when an application starts running. and only correct login id and password have been entered the real application will start. any sample out there? thank you.You can start a new thread by making a thread object and passing it an implementation of a runnable object. Runnable has just one method, public void run(), this is was gets executed in a second thread. perhaps the code you would use would look something like this.
<code>
// set up thread for login window
new Thread(new Runnable() {
public void run() {
// construct your login window here
// when you are done processing the
// password....
if(goodPassword) {
authorized = true; // a global variable
notifyAll(); // don't forget this
else {
System.exit(42);
}).start();
// control does not stop this code gets executed while
// the above thread is running.
// Set up main program here. This is done in the
// backround.
while(!authorized) {
synchronized(this)
{ wait(50); }
// now when the user logs in this frame pops
// up real quick.
myFrame.setVisible(true);
</code>
Hope you can figure it out.. good luck :) -
Help: Windows cannot restore a system image to a computer with different firmware
I want to recover a complete image of a Windows 7 operating system I have backed up to my other server. But I am getting the error "Windows cannot restore a system image to a computer with different firmware. The System Image was created by a computer using BIOS and this computer is using EFI"
The image was definitely taken from this machine - the firmware has not changed!
What do I need to do to restore the image?
Background Story ..
I bought a new HP 255 laptop per-installed with Windows 7 without Operating Systems instal disks (I will NEVER be stupid enough to do that again!).
I took a complete image of the systems, as suggested so that I was well backed up.
However, my machine corrupted its operating systems with a few weeks. The boot recovery CD did not work (would not boot). So in desperation, and because time was short I went out and bought another, legitimate copy of Windows 7 DVD with a license key (So now I have 2, legitimate copies of the operating system!).
I installed the new copy of Windows 7 - but it was dreadful, because many drivers were missing. Mostly the missing drivers were not available on the HP support site for this machine. ALso, boot up was increadibly slow compared to the original OS installation.
So I created a new boot recovery disk from the new version of Windows, and tried to restore using that. New boot disk loads ok, I can find the old image on my network (after loading a few network drivers). But I won't instal the image - giving the above error message.
I tried deleting the EFI partition from the disk (using GPARTED to reformat that partition). That killed the Windows 7 on the machine - but still gives the same error message when I try to re-image the machine.
I have tried going into the BIOS settings .. HP 255 has a "Legacy Mode" - which I have enabled, but this makes no difference at all!
I think that the kind of solutions I am looking for might be:
1. There is a clever way of disabling EFI on my 255 so that it looks like a legacy BIOS machine, or
2. This EFI this is wired into my new boot recovery disk - and there is a way of creating a boot recovery disk that does not use EFI
This has taken me about 2 weeks so far,please help with any suggestions!DonOxley wrote:
Erico,
I suspect that "MSDOS" is what the Gparted tool calls "MBR" for a partition table, as explained here:
http://superuser.com/questions/700770/mbr-equals-msdos-for-gparted
I think that you are suggesting I give up on trying to recover the image I have stored on my server and just to instal Windows 7 from my new copy. There are two problems with this.
1. After having systematically downloaded all of the drivers from the HP 255 notebook support page, I am still seeing missing drivers listed. Install the AMD graphics softpaq driver first. It also contains the chipset drivers.
2. The machine is taking a hugely long time to boot up, and seems much slower with this version. Maybe that is a product of using "EFI" rather than "bios" - I don't know.
My assumption is that HP had some special set-up option with their version of Windows which makes the machine more performant. It does not seem to be a coincidence that the image they deliver the machine with is not quite compatible with a 'normal' Windows 7 instal.
So my original question stands: How do I recover the image that I saved away (as per instructed) when I first bough the machine?
You still have not said what you used to create the system image. What is the "image" file's extension?
You are mistaken in your comparison. MSDOS is an operating sytem MBR is a partitioning scheme. that is comparing apples to oranges.
The article is making an oblique reference in that using GPARTED is more or less equated to using the diskpart utility at the command line. Everything done at the comand line is essentially done by use of MSDOS commands. GPARTED does the same thing with LINUX commands via a graphical interface so you don't have to type in the commands in a Linux console.
Do you mean making a backup? a backup is not a clone which can be reproduced on different hardware. The SSD disk replacement does make the hardware differ from the original configuration.
Follow the instaructions on the following tutorial to make your disk a GPT type before installing.

Login window crashes during login
I am having trouble with some student accounts. When a student tries to login they put in their information and press enter and the computer acts like it is going to log them in and then just refreshes the login window. The login window process does crash and creates a crashlog which I will paste at the end. The problem is not just with the machine because some other students can log into that machine.
We have over 50 students who are not able to log in right now. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

TOTAL 342.1MHi Azharislam, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward. -
System Unresponsive Once Login Window Appears
Tomorrow afternoon I'll be brought an Intel Mac mini bought almost a year ago in hopes I can fix a problem. When it boots, it displays the login window, but then doesn't respond to any action, whether selecting a user or clicking on the restart or shutdown buttons. It turned out that the wireless keyboard batteries were dead, but replacing them resulted in a "connected" message but no improvement. I had the user reboot into normal and safe mode, but neither helped. What type of things should I look for? Thanks for any advice.
When I had a chance to look at that system, it worked fine. I wonder if the problem was entirely due to weak batteries in the bluetooth keyboard. When I booted it, I did see a message about the clock being set to a time before 2008, but I'm not sure what that would have to do with the login problem.

Login window hides user with UID 1000
I had to change my primary user's UniqueID to 1000 to access NFS shares on a linux box.
Ever since then the account became "hidden" in the sense that regardless of the login window's option of "show list of users" I can only log in by selecting the "Other" option and supplying the username+password.
I have researched extensively and some people over different forums reported this behaviour as well specific to UID 1000. Nevertheless this "feature" is absolutely undocumented.
Would anyone know of a plist option that puts this user back to the login screen list?
I suppose alternatively I could change the UID back to 501 on both the Mac and the linux box so they'd be in sync...Thanks for the responce.
I realize that I need to chown some user specific folderes and files. I also did that on my current system.
Nevertheless...some thinges are still not working properly. I belive im not quite there yet.
I would like to know how to do this the simple but correct way....in LION
I think its a bit overkill to use your scripts, due to all the LDAP stuff.
There must be a specific way to add users with specific UID on LION on a single OSX installation.
I have found lots of halv way there solutions on the net..but would realy like to see something more official!
I kind of made a workaround with my NFS share on my linux sever, using a special way to mount them avoiding hte UID problems.
On the linux box in etc/exports...i export the NFS share linke this.
/media/RAID5/xxxx *(rw,async,no_subtree_check,insecure,anonuid=1000,anongid=1000,all_squash)
And ...in Finder...on the mac ...i right click and "Connect to server" like this
nfs://xxxIPxxxxx/media/RAID5/xxxx
xxxx= some folder do share.
All my linux users are as standard UID 1000, but if anyone with a drifferent UID mounts the nfs share ...they are regarded as uid 1000 in any case avoidnig file premission conflicts.
NFS is not the only reason I would like to use same UID on all systems.
Sharing files on harddisks, and dualboot systems with linux/osx are another reason.
Linux has read/write to HFS+ if not journaled..!!
(I know this is more info than needed, but if someone else reads this...having NFS issues..thay may pick up some idears ;o) -
Very slow login window on wake
My MacBook Air is very slow to wake to the login screen. It asks for my password every time, as I like it, but every time I open the lid, it's a good 10 seconds before I can even type my password. The screen turns on, but the text box isn't selected and nothing responds to keys, until about the 10 second mark, when it all seems to jolt on again, and I can log in.
It's not life-threatening, just an annoyance.
Most significantly, there is a log in the console every time I log in with the same message:
28/11/12 11:40:19.206 PM loginwindow[3191]: find_shared_window: WID -1
28/11/12 11:40:19.206 PM loginwindow[3191]: CGSSetWindowTags: Invalid window 0xffffffff
Apparently the loginwindow process is trying to find some specific window with an invalid address (0xffffffff is a little odd for a window's address, don't you think?). Of course, this problem persists over reboots, even when I've killed every single non-standard process.
Is anybody else experiencing this? And if so, has anyone worked out a solution?Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then drag or copy the text — do not type it — into the Terminal window and press return:
pmset -g
Post any lines of output that appear below what you entered — the text, please, not a screenshot.
