System Slow/Locking Up

OS X (10.4.9) is relatively slow running from my internal drive as compared to my external firewire backup drive. This morning the system locked up completely. I rebooted from the external, ran Disk Utility - repaired permissions, then repaired the disk (no errors found).
Here is my console log before/during/right after the event. I see some READ or WRITE errors, as well as a 'PREVIOUS SHUTDOWN CAUSE 3'. Any help is appreciated:

Yeah, I'm pretty sure SMART is a gimmick. I'm convinced it doesn't actually work. Before my last hard drive failure, Xbench showed that my hard drive was only running at half of its normal speed and I never heard a peep out of SMARTreporter.
I've had 3 hard drive failures. SMART didn't catch one.
Backup your data, ASAP!

  • System Slow-Down After Printing

I recently installed Mountain Lion. Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed a significant operating system (10.8.2) slow down after printing with my Epson R3000 printer. This happens after every printing session. When I say slow-down I mean significant delays and dreading "beachballs" when opening applications, selecting menu items or anything else I should choose to do. I'm left with re-starting the computer to get going normally again. After re-atarting I have gone to "verify permissions" and I get approx "5" pages of permission errors, all associated with the printer library in some fashion or another. I then repair all those permissions and re-start my MacPro. The operating system then works as normal and I can use the computer with no problems (until I start printing again). I mainly use the computer for photo editing with Adobe Photoshop CS6, Adobe Lightroom 4 and Aperture 3.2.
I did not have this problem before upgrading to Mountain Lion (and then to 10.8.2). I did not get "significant" permission errors before upgrading. Since all printer drivers for this printer are handled now by Apple via the "new" Software Update process I can't even re-download the Epson printer driver and start over. I'm completely at a loss as to what, associated with the printer function, is causing these "significant" permission errors and subsequent operating system slow down. My printer is almost brand new and was working flawlessly before Mountain Lion. Let me be clear though, I can print fine. My problem is the system slow down after using the print function which I am only guessing has something to do with the "5" pages of permission errors after printting photos (with CS6/Lightroom/Aperture).
Incidently, I am not in any way a computer expert. Verifying and repairing permissions is about all I know how to do that's why I need help. I also just thought I would try the forums first before going to technical support to see what people thought about this.
Again, I repair the permission errors, re-start my system and all is fine. Any further suggestions would be deeply appreciated.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • PSE 10 system slows down when adding files to catalog

I recently switched from PSE 3 to PSE10 and had issues converting the catalog.  I never did resolve those so I decided to start with creating a new catalog in PSE 10.  My first session of adding photos worked fine.  When I restarted the task the next day, I was asked in participating in making the product better by sharing information about my use with Adobe.  I agreed to participate and very quickly noticed that my computer slowed considerably when adding photos from my hard drive.  The process still worked but I experienced a dramatic increase in the time it took for photos to be added (e.g. the cursor spins for a couple of minutes while the task is working).  I went under my account preferences and opted out of the product participation program but the problem has persisted.  I rebooted the computer to see if that would help but it has not.  I have turned off all media analysis and both optimized and repaired my catalog and while this has provided some improvement, there are still instances where the system slows down.  Now it seems that every other folder's worth of pictures (does not matter how many photos) I add causes this delay.
I appreciate any help anyone can provide in determining why this slow down keeps occuring.
FYI, I am running a new Windows 7, 64-bit system with 8GB DDR-3-1066MHz, and 2 TB hard drive.

Have you also edited the Preferences (Performance) to increase the amount of RAM that PSE can use?
Do you have many background processes running?  Having a single HDD means that everything running on your computer has to wait in the queue for disk access.
How many photos are you importing?
What file types are the photos?
    How large are the photos?

  • Compleat system slow down after current updates

Has anyone learned why we all seem to have a compleat system slow down after the current set of updates? Everything works, but is VERY slow to respond. Even iTunes 7.1.1 plays video choppy now. Audio track plays fine however. Odd.
    -Apple //GS

First of all, try repairing your permissions with Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility. Select the hard drive you're running off of and then click the Repair Permissions button.
If that doesn't work I'd do an archive and install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Then run the combo update(s) instead of the consecutive ones. That seems to be working for a lot of people, but it will probably take a while.

  • System slow down after lion update 8/18/11

Has anyone else had a problem with their system slowing down after downloading the system update for Lion on 8/18?  My system is not nearly as responsive and is only about two weeks old and have not installed any software other than Microsoft Office 2011 when I bought the machine.  Any ideas?

Ok my system is booting and shutting down faster now.. This method worked for me:
    First, I repaired the permissions:
    1) Open up Disk Utility
    2) Select your hard drive
    3) Now select Repair Disk Permissions.
Then, I deleted the caches folder:
    1) From the Finder's Go menu, select Go To Folder, and go to this folder: /Library
    2) Delete everything inside the Caches folder (This might require the Admin Username & Password)
Finally, go to System Preferences and click on Startup Disc then click on your boot drive (In my case I've selected my HD labeled "Macintosh HD Mac OS X, 10.7.1". Now do a restart by clicking on the Restart button. If you don't have a Startup drive selected your mac will waste time at boot searching for a suitable boot drive !
I Hope this works for you as well.
    Cheers!

  • Huge amount of virtual memory and system slows to a crawl

I have a mac mini with 5 GB of memory running os x mavericks and server 3, prior to the mavericks upgrade, it ran fine. Now it is showing an excessive amount of virtual memory in use, 40-70 gb, and the system slows to a near stop: e.g. switching apps takes over 30 seconds, starting one takes well over a minute, pressing command tab doesn't respond with list of apps and the display doesn't always wake up.  A hard reboot (hold down power button to turn off, then back on) seems to be the only thing that works to get out of this. I tried scheduling a shutdown and reboot with energy saver but that just resulted in a completely non-responsive system.  When the display does wake up, there's nothing in the activity monitor memory display that indicates a high memory usage.
I'm considering wiping out the hard drive and reinstalling unless somebody has some other ideas.
Does anybody have similar problems with mavericks and server 3?

I managed to look at it before the system hung up and it looks like devicemgrd is the top user of memory.  Of course, I don't know if this is indicative of a problem as I have only 1 server.   I saw it up to 1.4 GB just a little bit ago and now it is down below 800MB and dropping.

  • System Status Lock

In my company I am creating project, with reference to WBS / Activity we are creatin Purchase order. We want a temporary status in project by virtue of which we can avoid any further PO against the particular project. How to achieve this ?
I tried to do this with lock status in PS but although I set up Lock for Header level WBS still I can make PO against the project.
Wht is significance of system stastus lock ?
    Pl suggest.
    Regds

You can either use user status for controlling this, I've mentioned about how this needs to be done is previous post, link below:
    Re: Project Purchase order
Else you can set Lock Account Assignment  for the WBS, this will stop PO creation against the WBS.

  • What is causing system slow down? Why is my screen now in contrast?

Does anyone know what type of diagnostics or utilities to run on a MacPro OS X 10.6.8 (mid 2010) when the system slows to a halt every few minutes? Today, besides becoming even slower, the screen has gone to a "contrast" setting.
Any solutions for the "beach ball of death"?
    Thanks!

go to spotlight and type disk utility
click on it and it'll take you to this
click on Macintosh HD then click vertify disk permission
then it'll run after that click repair disk permissions
then thats it it'll run and repair everything

  • Cross system object lock -how to build up lock entries for existing request

    Hello,
we implemented ChaRM for some years and  intend to activate cross system object lock (CSOL), now.
But there are a lot of existing transport requests, which have not been imported to productive system, yet.
It would be very helpful to create lock entries for objects, which are assigned to those transport requests.
Does anyone know any standard report for this purpose?
Thanks a lot for any hint.
    Best regards
    Horst

If anyone else needs that feature:
Report TMW_TRKORR_LOCK_UPDATE (executed in satellite system) will lock the objects of a transport request in solution manager system.

  • *** System Prefs Locking Up ***

Anybody having problems with System Prefs locking up when left open for a while? I have to force quit it.
    Am running 10.4.10
    Mac Pro 2.66Ghz
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I know this sound general, but did you repair your permissions? Create a different user account, and see if it still does it. It probably won't.

Re: Changing desktop pictures locks system preferences. Info: MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)   This is very similar to my issue:
When I select System Preferences from the Apple System Preferences menu, both laptop and extended monitor screens immediately jump to the Change background/screen windows and locks me there with the spinning beach ball, while the text on the Change screens reads, "Loading ....".  Then I have to move to Activity Monitor and Force Quit System Preferences which indicates in parens "System Preferences no longer responding."
    I have tried LInc's solution re finding both plist files:  Caches/com.apple.systempreferences  which I cannot find;
I have found and moved the following item to the Desktop:
    Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Retesting by launching System Preferences again produced the same results. I then replace the Desktop's plist file where it came from.
BTW:  The standard Utility Disk checks indicate no errors.
    I'm stuck. Any more ideas?
    Thanks.

  • System wide Lock timeout

    Hi,
I'd like to set a system wide lock timeout to 10 secs, i est I want that if a transaction waits for a row more than 10 seconds, the Oracle forces a ROLLBACK!
Looking in the documentation I found the trigger:
    CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER resumable_default_timeout AFTER SUSPEND ON DATABASE BEGIN DBMS_RESUMABLE.SET_TIMEOUT(10); END;
... but it seems not to work.
Is there any system wide parameter, or another trigger, or I missed something with the above trigger (I shutdown any session to test)!
    thank you
    G.

    Steve,
your answer is complete, the problem I am facing is that:
1 - I should instruct my programmers of the usabily of this tecnique the SELECT ... FOR UPDATE WAIT n, so the timeout is faced from application perspective, and it isn't so bad, in fact every single query could be customized regarding the WAIT time!
The drawback is that if the programmer doesn't use this technique, the application waits for the eternity.
2 - A system wide lock timeout, in any case could force, in any case, a default behaviour, ...
3 - If you are doing a porting from a different RDBMS see DB2, that implements a db lock timeout, you should recode all the SQL, and the porting needs more review and testing of the application!
    Thank you
    very much
    G.

  • Media Encoder only using 15% CPU, and system slows to cement

Not sure what's going on, but trying to export from Premiere CS6 to Media Encoder and very basic 640x360 H264 4 minute clips are taking 40 minutes, only using 15-30% CPU (on 2011 Macbook Pro 2.3 core i7), and the system slows to a cement crawl (had to stop it just to type this post). Nothing else is using any CPU and RAM is 25% free.
I don't even know where to begin to troubleshoot. Tried restarting is all so far. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Brandon

It seems there is a problem with the Mercury Playback Engine on my MBP. I turned it off and switched to software only mode, and now CPU is screaming at 750% on export and estimated time is about 8 times faster

    ups,
I forgot that part, we are giving the answer in small pieces

    1) Connect to the database

    2) Unlock the user ( as  William Fee post )
    ALTER USER xxxxx ACCOUNT UNLOCK;
    3) Change the password ( as my post )
Alter user system identified by <newpassword>
    4) a bit optional ( IMHO ) change the profile  ( as  William Fee post )
