System slowdown after downgrade to 10.5.8

Hi, had to downgrade my system from 10.6.0 to 10.5.8 due to compatibility issues. Now am experiencing slowdown of overall performance.
My question is: does Snowleopard automatically install any firmware/HD driver or other updates that are NOT getting erased during a new, clean install of Leopard ?
Defintely not using any Snowleopard Backups, did a complete new Leopard install.
Can compare performance to other machines with similar setup. and it´s clearly less responsive.
Did all the system routines. Spotlight´s not running scans.
Thanks for your answers !

NO. an erase and install of leopard will wipe absolutely all traces of snow leopard. whatever problems you are having now are not snow leopard related.

  • Significant system slowdown after installation of 10.5.4

I downloaded update 10.5.4 this afternoon (about 3:30PM MDT Jun 30). Thereafter I noted a significant system slowdown. Symptoms: much slower system boot.
Safari, instead of the usual 2 "bounces" to start, took 8. I rebooted twice to confirm. (Now, even Firefox3 is faster!)
I am a relative newbie to the MacOSX world (10-year Windows veteran) so I haven't the slightest hint how to investigate... A simple-minded hint, for the likes of me, would be much appreciated! I'll check back in tomorrow morning.

    Hi fjpoblam-
I have some possible causes for you, and a couple solutions to suggest...
    CAUSES?
(Keeping in mind that some of these may be unlikely, they are all possible and shouldn't be automatically discounted because of their odds.)
    1. The 10.5.4 update may have been corrupted or done something wrong.
    2. A previous OS X update may have somehow been corrupted or done something wrong that was then made worse by the 10.5.4 update.
    3. You may have some third-party software that isn't playing nice with 10.5.4.
    4. Your unit could have a hardware issue which may have been triggered by the 10.5.4 update, or that just happened to appear at the same time by coincidence.
    TROUBLESHOOT:
(letting me know the results of these tests might help narrow down the problem)
    I. Unplug all external devices (USB, Firewire, ExpressCard, Ethernet, Monitor) and turn off Airport. Restart and see if the problem is gone.
II. From the Login screen, hold down shift immediately after pressing Login, which will prevent any Login Items from starting. Play around a bit and see if the problem is gone.
III. Startup holding down the Shift key, which will boot into "Safe Mode", temporarily disabling third-party and unnecessary extensions. Check to see if the problem is gone.
IV. Does it occur just on AC power, just on battery power, or both? Is there anything about the hardware that did not originally come with it from Apple? Do you have any third-party RAM installed?
    _(Possible) SOLUTIONS_:
    a) Download and run the 10.5.4 "Combo Updater" from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1054comboupdate.html. It should still run even though you are already at 10.5.4. This will often have the ability to fix problems that were created by previous OS X updates and/or conflicts between updates as a result of corruption or errors. *(Likelihood to fix: 30%)* +Note: I always prefer to do OS X updates via combo updaters rather than the automatic Software Updates just to be safe, even though it works fine for most people.+
    b) Do an "Archive and Install" via your original Leopard disc _(Backup everything first!!)_. This is one of the most time consuming and least enjoyable options, but almost always works. Startup from the Leopard disc and run the installer; when you see an "Options" button, click it and select "Archive and Install" and check the boxes to Preserve Users and Applications. Make sure you do not skip that option because if you continue with the install without making that selection you will loose your data. *(Likelihood to fix: 90%)*
    c) Take the unit to an Apple retail store or call Technical support. My guess is that their recommendation will be to do an Archive and Install, but if that doesn't work and it turns out to be a hardware issue they will be your only options for repair or replacement. If you go to a retail store, you can make an appointment ahead of time through this site: http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/ by selecting a store and clicking "Reserve" under Genius Bar so that you don't have to wait in line. *(Likelihood to fix: 100%)*
+REMINDER TO EVERYONE: Although hardware and software perform without problems most of the time for most people, things can go wrong for no good reason to anyone at anytime with any OS (sadly, some people get hit more often than others). ALWAYS make a backup of your data before doing major updates (especially OS updates). I know it doesn't help to hear after the fact, and backing up isn't convenient for many people, but it's guaranteed to prevent this problem every time. I at least suggest holding off from immediately doing updates and letting others be the guinea pigs instead.+

  • Help (please) w/ Full System Restore after downgrading from Snow to Leopard

Yes. I should have created a separate partition, cloned the drive, etc…. But everything was working so well I figured an upgrade to SL would make things amazing. Wrong.
So I downgraded from Snow Leopard to Leopard, using a clean Erase and Install from the OSX DVD that came with my Mac. Told by an AppleCare techie that I could restore my system from a Time Machine BackUp, I was confident that when the install successfully completed I would be able to restore from the TM Backup I made PRIOR TO installing Snow Leopard.
However, the 'restore system from time machine…' option that came up at the end of the Leopard installation told me I only have one TM backup, the latest one made under Snow Leopard (which obviously cannot be used to restore a system now running on Leopard.
When I log into the OS, I can open TM and choose the last 10.5 (Leopard) backup I made, but it seems to only let me restore the 'Macintosh HD' as a folder. So here is where I am stuck:
How can I restore my system - now on a clean install of Leopard - to the last TM backup I made under the selfsame OS. {Sorry if this is a simpleton question - I just really do not want to ** anything up}.

    .adamo wrote:
    Thanks, Pondini -
Good to know the AppleCare rep. I talked to (apparently) knew nothing about time machine or how to restore a system from it. I was given nothing but wrong and bad advice…
Yeah, unfortunately that seems to happen on occasion. They don't seem to have access to decent info on things they don't understand, or just "wing it" or something.
Anyway, the erase and install happened, so at least my system is 'fresh'. I booted from the OSX DVD, went into the Utilities menu, found the TM Back-up I wanted, et voila. But it seems I could have bypassed the whole erase/install thing and just restored with the BackUp from TM.
So I must say, to Apple's credit, that TM works extremely well, and exactly as described; couldn't have been more painless (not what I'm used to with computers, at all).
That's why you got a Mac! (They're certainly not perfect, but they're pretty good!).
Glad it's sorted out, and thanks for the star!

  • Missing System Apps After Downgrade

    Hello All -
I recently downgraded from Yosemite BETA back to Mavericks for multiple reasons. During my invite to test Yosemite I followed all instructions, more specifically the backing up of my computer prior to upgrading. I used Time Machine to back up.
Now that I am downgrading, I restored from Time Machine. I have 99% of my stuff back, but I am missing System Preferences from the OS. It simply appears as question mark as seen in the attached image. I see I am also missing Terminal, and possible others. What is the fix?
More Info: When I click on Apple > System Preferences, nothing happens. There is only one account on my computer and I am the Administrator.

Step one is to DL and reinstall the 10.9.4 COMBO update. If that doesn't fix things, DL the full 10.9.4 installer, save a copy, and reinstall it. If neither work, contact Apple since they recommended that you rely on TM for restoration, rather than a bootable backup/clone of your previously good 10.9.4 installation.

  • T400 downgraded from Vista to XP resulting in system freeze after 10 min activity

    Hi,
I just purchased a T400 and have gone through the process of (re)grading the OS from Vista Business to XP. From the moment the setup dialogue for XP started (machine name, date, users etc), the whole systems freezes after working the machine for around 10-15 min. First, I suspected it to be a mouse freeze, but I get no reponse from neither the keyboard nor mouse (not sure if it is a complete system freeze or to do with mouse/keyboard drivers). Even the clock in the bottom right corner stops running.
To get the system going I need to force the system to reboot using the power on/off button.
The XP restore disc I used came from Lenovo with the computer, and I have followed the instructions by point. Do any of you recognize this problem? And more importantly, know how to deal with it

Message Edited by Missmostly on 10-16-2008 08:56 AM

    Hi,
I posted a message on the forum 5 days ago, and got no replies.  I agree the  problem description might be a bit vague, so here we  go again:
I recently purchased a T400 (model 2765, 21g) with the XP downgrade option (the MS Windows XP Conversion Kit containing 2 CD's: Lenovo's Rescue &  Recovery plate + XP product recovery plate with SP2). During the installation of XP (the end part where you set up your user) the computer freezes (no response from keyboard). I power the machine off and on again, and the installation continues as it were. I finish the installation and the computer is set. After additional 10 min the computer freezes again in the same style.
I imagine it to be a powermanagement disagreement between MS system and Lenovos powermanagement system, and set every parameter to be always ON and full performance ( I am running on AC). This time the freeze doesn't happen for an hour. I then begin to reinstall the powermanagement drivers and the general drivers for this particular model running XP (from Lenovos drivers Matrix), and now I am looking at two hour before each freeze. That is if I don't plug in any external hard drives (then the system can crash within 15 min or an hour), and we turn a blind eye to the occational freeze after 10 min on the first boot of the day .
At some point I suspected there to be a conflict with the existing SATA drivers that I also have reinstalled for the occation.  Still the system is NOT stable.
And the frustrating thing is that I have no clue why. The sympthom is always the same, complete screen freeze ( I do not know if the system is active behind (no hard drive running)), that can only be cured with a forced boot.
If any of you reconize this, please assist me to a solution. I have by now installed all programs to my liking including all MS updates (SP3 etc), and hope there is a way to get to the core without a complete reinstall (or worse, return to the realm of Vista)

  • [SOLVED] System freeze after upgrade linux-3.12.9-2 to linux-3.13.4-1

After upgrading from kernel 3.12.9 to 3.13.4 (booth x86_64 architecture) i detected system freeze after round about 0.5s of the login screen about 80% of the time.
So i first thought it coulbe be the the ati driver and uninstalled that via livecd/chroot.
But the same thing happens in comand line only mode.
Afterwards i setup at ssh server to get into the maschine if it is still running, but is was also not responding to that.
Downgrading to 3.12.9 solved the issue. In journalctl i could not find any usefull information.

  • Error -42408 after downgrade n iphone content unreadable

    Hi,
I recently deleted the new itunes 11 from the apps folder, downloaded and installed the old itunes 10.7 in it's place instead. But everytime I start itunes, I get the error -42408 and itunes keep telling me it cannot read the content of my iphone and I have to restore it. This never happened prior to the upgrade to version 11 so I am thinking it's a problem with the downgrade?
Is there something I am to delete or??
    Thank You.

What you need to do depends upon how you did the downgrade.
    =Downgrading from iTunes 11 to iTunes 10.7=
You may be able to go back with Time Machine but this may involve restoring other items too (https://discussions.apple.com/message/20441404).  Alternatively:
Back up your computer first, in case the unexpected happens.
    Quit iTunes.
Get iTunes 10.7 from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576 or the direct download link at:  http://appldnld.apple.com/iTunes10/041-7195.20120912.d3uzQ/iTunes10.7.dmg
Do a few preparatory steps by making sure all iTunes components are not running and cleaning old files.   See https://discussions.apple.com/message/20475394.  Do steps 3 and 4.  Steps 6-8 may be also useful but I don't know if they are essential.  Some of the other steps are not necessary, duplicate steps listed later in my post or are perhaps even unhelpful in the process.
Replace the iTunes 11 application with iTunes 10.7.  Simply dragging the application to the trash may not work. Lion (OSX 10.7) and newer systems have iTunes integrated into the operating system and deleting is a bit more involved.  Two ways to do this are:
    1.  Use the shareware Pacifist utility (http://www.charlessoft.com/) to install iTunes 10.7 including all associated system files. Details at http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=16400819&postcount=6
    2. Check this reference on how to delete the iTunes application itself:
Delete iTunes in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion - http://osxdaily.com/2011/09/13/delete-itunes-in-mac-os-x-10-7-lion/
After deleting the application there may be other files that need downgrading too. See the note about error -42408 at the end of this post. You may want to tuck these away somewhere safe until you have completed the installation of iTunes 10.7.  I have not tested this but ideally if newer versions are not found then the installer will put in the old versions. This may include these files in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ which apparently get updated by iTunes 11:
    AirTrafficHost.framework
    CoreFP.framework
    DeviceLink.framework
    iTunesAccess.framework
    MobileDevice.framework
After doing one of the two procedures above you will have to rescue the most recent old iTunes library from your iTunes > Previous Libraries folder. Rename it "iTunes Library.itl"  and replace the existing one in the iTunes folder. A newer version of iTunes irreversibly updates your library file so you have to replace it with the old one or you will get an error message. Note, this will revert your library to the version at the time of the upgrade and you will have to update any changes made since.  See:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/20401436 - turingtest2 11/2012 post on rebuilding empty/corrupt library from previous iTunes library file after upgrade/crash.
iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1451
    Other issues:

    - If you encounter error -42408:
iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting - http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297 > Specific Conditions and Alert Messages: (Mac OS X / Windows) - including specific error codes.
Alternatively, check https://discussions.apple.com/message/20441424 which requires you have a Time Machine backup (though possibly if you remove the newer version of these files old ones may be installed with the iTunes 10.7 installer - untested).  A  variant of this is at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/20448184

  • Can't use apps after downgrading then restoring

There are some apps that I can't use after downgrading from Lion to Snow Leopard, then restoring the system back to Lion from a Time Machine backup.  These are things like Address Book, Mail, the App Store and Preview.  I get a message that says the program "couldn't open because of a problem".  How do I get these to work, short of having to buy Lion for 69.00 (as I can't use the App Store and get it for 29.00)?

similar issue looking for an answer as well
I just lost my HD after upgrading to Lion.  I don't have a lion boot up disk and I can't restore my Lion time machine backup using the Snow Leopard boot disk.   I tried installing snow leopard fresh with the thought of upgrading to Lion and restoring time machine backup from there.   Once I  install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard the App Store does not run saying I need Lion to run it which I can't get without the App store.

  • Major problems after downgrading to 10.2--stuck in console

I just created a disaster after downgrading my old G3 iMac from Tiger down to Panther (10.2). When I did the installation from the install disc, I set it to archive the old system and save all user settings. After the installation, I could not log in to any of the users accounts with the old passwords, which I know are correct. I then booted from the install disc, went into disc utility, and repaired permissions. Then, I (perhaps stupidly) used the "reset passwords" utility to reset the passwords of all the user accounts (to the original passwords). After rebooting, I was able to log into to each of the accounts, but immediately after logging in, I was immediately sent to the console! ("Welcome to BSD/Darwin," etc.). I was able to log in through the command line, and did a ls -l to confirm that the directories were still intact, but my unix skills don't go much beyond that. After exiting, I got bounced back to the (graphical) login screen. Could someone please help me out of this mess? I do have a Powerbook G4 and an external bootable hard drive that I could use to boot from (in addition to the install disc, of course), if needed. Thank you!

    Paul:
I hope you backed up at least your Users Folder before attempting this major procedure.
Here are a couple of articles you may have already seen that pertain to the operations you attempted to perform:
Mac OS X: How to reinstall a prior version
Mac OS X: About the Archive and Install feature
Here is what I suggest you do to extricate yourself from your predicament. Boot from the external HDD and see if you can access the info on your computer and try backing up your Users Folder which contains your data and library. You can use Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone it, or just drag and drop it. After you have secured your Users Folder then boot from the install disk of the OS of your choice, wipe disk using a simple erase, then reinstall your OS. You can then migrate your Users Folder back.
    Good luck.

  • System freezed after "startx"

    Hello,
after updating with "pacman -Syu" my system freezes after boot-process at the loginscreen.
To be more exact: When X starts, all my input-devices doesn't react anymore. Even new plugged-in keyboards doesn't do something.
Numlock doesn't change lights on my keyboard.
As far as i know pacman shows me while updating a message about udev.
Pacman has updated udev, kernel26 and some other packages.
In GRUB I've appended "single" to get a terminal after booting and before X starts.
I've tried to reset X by replacing xorg.conf with xorg.conf.backup, but no effect.
Everytime I enter "startx" in the terminal, I can see some white textboxes, but can't move my mouse or enter anything with my keyboard.
Hardreset is the only thing, that helps.
So anybody know what to do in this situation or has any tips for me?
I would appreciate it if somebody can help me... thanks in advance!

Yes, I have a .xinitrc in my $HOME.
I've tried several things and found out, that not X is the problem alone.
It's more the udev update, which doesn't recognize my hardware anymore.
When I type in startx in tty, X now starts with my KDE, where I could see, that stuff is loading (so it's not freezed).
But KDE alerts me, that some audio hardware were removed and even in tty i couldn't mount my usb harddrive or start my notebook-wlan.
So I came to the conclusion, that only my hardware were not recognized..
Is there a way to get udev recognize my hardware again? I've even downgraded udev and kernel26 to versions, which worked properly..., but that doesn't help.
    hope you can help.. =/

  • Xorg slowdown after last update?

Somewhere after the last X update, Xorg/OpenGL performance took a dive with Composite enabled, almost halving FPS with 3D applications. The only solution is to turn off Composite in xorg.conf (which isn't nice)
I'm using the Ati OSS driver w/ an old Radeon 9200 PRO on a barebones Fluxbox setup, normally glxgears gives me > 2000 FPS, but with Composite on, that number drops down to < 600 FPS. And I'm sure I didn't mess up my configuration - I just enabled Page Flips & HyperZ in driconf.
Does anyone else experience the same problem? Or did I just b0rked Xorg on this machine?

I had the exact same problem here. Apparently, it's caused by package xorg-xkb-utils. After downgrading it, everything went back to normal.
No space or rights problem on my system so far… Has someone an idea of the problem or should I just report a bug ?

Need help. Greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Logical System Conversion after system refresh failed

    Hello,
Logical System Conversion after system refresh couldn't complete as the printer was locked. This job was run in the background. In SM37, the  job log of RBDLSMAP shows as job finished, but it took only 40 seconds. Now I see that the logical system got changed(Converted) in the client settings scc4 but I know that this client being a production client and would run for couple of hours. Here is the job log information.

When try to rerun bdls again, it shows that it is already available and it says "The new logical system name is already assigned to the current client".
    Any suggestions on this?
    Thanks,
    Mahesh

    Hi ,
Rerun the BDLS again as this took very little time.
When you try to run again it popsup message saying it already exists just delete that and again put the Logical system name and run it will run that time.
May be while scheduling the job you gave for spool I am not sure why is it looking for Printer which is locked.
    Thanks.
