System Software (Mail, Preview, Contacts) crashes after migration from 10.5 (PPC) to MacBook Air

Hi!
I've just migrated my old system (PowerMac G5 running 10.5) to a new MacBook Air (11'' Mid 2013) using the migration assistant. I've had problems with crashing applications (as far as I can see only Apple software has been affected: Mail, Preview, Contacts, TextEdit) since I've completed the migration.
I've already done the following: reinstalled 10.9.1 update, repaired permissions and checked volume through recovery. Reset SMC, PRAM and done a safe boot. Rebuilt the Spotlight index. Nothing has helped thus far.
Console is flooded with the following, repeated messages:
12.02.14 09:25:00,727 com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.dspluginhelperd) The following job tried to hijack the service "com.apple.system.DirectoryService.legacy" from this job: com.apple.DirectoryServices

I guess that migration assistant moved something over that interferes with the new systems. Do you have any ideas what to do? My next step would be to reinstall the system from recovery. Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

Solved. Threw away the only Imap-Account (Folder [email protected]) and it worked;

  • ITunes, iPhoto and system clock crash after migrating from Snow Leopard

    Hello everyone,
I had MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard but had to migrate to older one with 10.5.8 today.
After 4 hours it finished and everything seems fine except 3 things:
    1. iTunes crashes on each launch attempt. I even followed an article to uninstall it, got a new one from apple.com but I still have the same issue.
    2. iPhoto opens with success and shows folders overview, but when I click to enlarge a photo I get a blank screen. After about 2 minutes the program quits unexpectedly.
    3. System clock behaves really strange. It seems to ignore time zone settings completely. I select Melbourne, Australia and quit Sys preferences but when I get there back I still have GMT time. Setting manually gives me nothing - time of email is still GMT.
Anyone have seen similar problems after migrating? My primary guess is that this issues are caused by migrating to older Mac OS version, but maybe it's not the point. Anyway, would be great to have this fixed. Without iPhoto, iTunes and proper times in e-mail inbox my Mac is pretty useless...

I installed this update, restarted but nothing helped. By permissions - what do you exactly mean, how could they change or what could be broken?
I also noticed that what is broken as well are the PYM Player and Quick Time. When I open a movie, I got the sound but no video output at all. It is similar to iPhoto where I see the miniatures but normal size viewing goes blank.
Does anyone has a clue what can be broken that causes such problems?
My Mac is now really just an e-mailing and surfing machine...

  • Kernel Panic - invalid backlight duty cycle - after upgrade from 10.5.2 on macbook air A1237

Here is the short version. I bought an older orignial Macbook Air Model A1237. The hinges had been damaged, and the screen would not display correctly - it had lines all across it and you could not see what you were doing. Anyway - I replaced the screen, hard drive, logic board, upper case, pretty much everything in sucession in an effort to get the MBA up and running again and get rid of the kernel panic I keep getting, all Apple replacement OEM parts. I bought a replacement screen - making sure I checked compatibility etc.. but when it started up I felt great perfect view - all was good - then it kernel paniced. I finally figured out that if I turned up the backlight manually all the way to max or if the ambient sensor made the backlight go to max - these were the only time I get a panic. Otherwise it runs perfeclty. The odd thing is I bought the original MBA disc that would have came with the MBA brand new - and if I wipe the hard drive and install leopard 10.5.2 from the dics and do not update anything - it works 100% perfectly no kernel panic at all. If I updgrade beyond the 10.5.2 I get the panic back. So that tells me its not the hardware, and I have confirmed the hardware and firmware are all up to date, as I was hoping it would be that easy a fix of updating the firmware.  I have tried everything - googled everything - I am at the end of my rope on this one - please help.
In addition to all the repair work - i have tried test user, upgrading to snow leopard and lion, taking to the apple store, everything I can do , with no solid answer  - the apple store told me it was hardware. But if it was then 10.5.2 should generate the panic as well.  There are lots of articles and posts on other forums on this very issue - usually surrounding having the MBA display repaired and then they started getting the panics thereafter - but no one has ever recieved an answer either at all, or that works.
Here is the KP log below - please let me know your thoughts - id like to upgrade to lion to get the most out of the MBA - any help is appreciated - - - - - heres the log - - - - ( the reason the BSD states at loginwindow is the ambient sensor at that time kicks in and creates the panic ):

So I found a post on a random forum that offered a fix that I have tried and it worked. Background: I had a cracked LCD screen on a A1237, and I replaced a new screen and a battery. I started getting kernel panics when the brightness went to the highest level. Anyways, what you do is you need to get this file from a apple os x 10.5:
    /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext
    then:
Install the .kext file you just grabbed by dragging it into Kext Utility (which can be downloaded here: http://cvad-mac.narod.ru/index/0-4)
    then:
Shut down the machine. Reset SMC and PRAM (SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964, PRAM:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
and the problem is fixed. If you google a bit, you can find an os x 10.5.2 AppleIntelGMAX3100FB.kext file at to use.
The original fix I found was posted here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=880800
    Edit:
Just to clarify, my mac book air is running snow leopard 10.6.8, and I inserted the file from a 10.5.2. The fix completely eliminated the problem, now I can turn the brightness to max without the kernel panic.

  • ICal crashes after migration from G3

Hi - I just took over my boyfriend's G4 laptop after having a G3 "snow book" for years. We erased the G4 HD, reinstalled the software that came with it, used the migraiton routine to move stuff from the old G3 and then upgraded to 10.4.11. Everything is working except iCal.
iCal crashes immediately. The icon will bounce in the Dock, the calendar will appear and then disappear. I've been prompted to "Report to Apple" and I've done so at least 3 times.
How can I overcome this? How can I get iCal to work?
    TIA some expert info,
    lefty

Hi lefty, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If that doesn't help, quit all Applications, try moving these 3 files to the desktop and reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.AlarmScheduler.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iCal.helper.plist

  • Getting an error 150:30 message on CS4 after migration from time capsule to new MacBook Pro

Getting a constant error message... deleted the files stated in the forum and tried to run the LicenceRepair but nothing is happening... ran the .py file in teminal but still getting the error message... My MacBook is running OSX 10.9.3

Sorry, but Apple's Migration feature doesn't work with Adobe applications.
    1. Use the Cleaner tool to remove what you copied onto your computer:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
    2. Install CS4 from your original install discs, or from your back of the CS4 install files.

  • Severe Time Drifting after Migration from 10.5.8 - Help!

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone can help me out or shed some light on a very odd issue that came about this morning.  I'm really having a hard time figuring out a fix.
I recently upgraded one of my old Mac mini servers to some new, (to me), hardware.  The old server was a last-gen G4, and the new one is a late 2006 Intel.
The migration went totally fine, and all services are responding and working as expected.  This server really isn't used for all that much, so I didn't anticipate any real issues in upgrading from 10.5.8 (PPC) to 10.6.7 (Intel).  But after checking everything over this afternoon, I landed on a really weird issue.
I can literally watch the time progress slower on this server.  Really.  The seconds pass slower, and after about an hour, it will be up to five minutes behind all the other servers in my infrastruture.  The server is setup to watch time.apple.com as it's NTP, and there's no change with another NTP server.  I can grep the NTPd and it seems to be working fine.  I've "started fresh" by removing ntp.conf and ntp.drift, rebooted, and had NTPd recreate them after setting new time and date preferences.  That seems to have helped a *bit* but it's still persisting.  Time zone information is correct.  I've even turned off time sync altogether and it still persists, so it's got to be a local issue with the system.
Now, after some pondering, I believe I know what's causing the issue.  The person I inherited the server from replaced the stock 1.5 Core Solo with a 1.66 Core Duo, which I've seen done plenty of times before, and never heard any real issues with.  And I did physically check the upgrade, and everything seems to be perfect.  The system sees both cores fine, and everything is stable.  Except this very odd time/clock issue.  This is the only root cause that I can possibly think of for it doing this.
And what's odd, is that if the time is wrong in the menu bar, and I go into the Time and Date prefpane, it instantly updates to the right time.
Now really, this isn't *that* big of a deal for this server.  None of it's services rely on perfect time, (Kerberos and whatnot), but it's still rather annoying, especially for Time Machine backups.  My main curiousity is if anyone knows how to increase the interval for NTP syncing with time.apple.com, so it'll check every hour or so, (I believe it checks every 12 by default.  Correct me if I'm wrong).
    TL;DR
After migrating from Leopard Server (PPC) to Snow Leopard Server (Intel), my system clock is running about five minutes slow per hour.  Suspecting processor upgrade is to blame.  How can I increase NTP syncing interval with time.apple.com?
    Thanks in advance everyone!

You can add/modify the minpoll and maxpoll values in ntp.conf.  This should allow you to set the time poll and reset a bit more aggressively.
The Xeon chips have been notorious for time skew.  I've not seen the same with CoreDuo and Core2Duo.
You may also just want to periodically stop and start the NTP process.  This can be down using systemsetup command:  systemsetup -setusingnetworktime on/off
In corporate environments with Windows time servers that reboot frequently, I tend to automate a script that stops network time, waits a few seconds, and then starts it again.  This will force a sync.
Hope this helps.  Oh, and by the way, time is critically importation to Kerberos authentication and authorization from the client.  Next the DNS, time is the most common cause of access denial.  Keep DNS and time healthy.

  • Mail "unexpectedly quits" after migration from snow leopard to new iMac running Mountain Lion

Mail "unexpectedly quits" after migration from snow leopard time machine files to new iMac running Mountain Lion.  I can run connection doctor OK.  But the activity window is blank.   If you try to open message viewer window then mail program crashes.  Would really like to get my old emails back as the old imac is totally dead.  Thanks for any help.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

I have tried reinstalling. Next I reinstalled xCode. Then I reinstalled iLife from a DVD. I reinstalled the developer tools. Nothing has helped yet.
The problem is that the variable _OBJC_CLASS_$_NSObject is missing from the /usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib file.
I even reinstalled the  /usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib file from a backup when the Mail program worked but no luck.
How do we get a  /usr/lib/libobjc.A.dylib file with the  _OBJC_CLASS_$_NSObject variable?

  • Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Just got a new imac and my iwork software wont work. I have the serial numbers but after migrating from my old mac running OSX tiger it won't even give me that opportunity. I do not have any discs as this was downloaded. Help

Hi, hopefully you guys can help me out, I just
purchased a G5 iMac to replace my aging dell desktop,
and now i'm more or less completely os x dependant
(I've had an ibook for a few months now). Anyway, I
    have a few questions:
    1. Does anyone know of a (free) mail notifier tool,
that will alert me when I recieve new pop3 mail? I
used to use AIM for this in windows
The built in email program does sound an alert for new messages.
    2. Anyone know of a good (free, again) IRC client?
    iChat works well.
    3. I noticed earlier that my screen was flickering,
it seems to have subsided for now, but is that normal
to encounter in a new display? It wasn't really bad
flicker, but I could see it.
    No idea.
    4. I leave my desktops on 24/7x365, will that be a
problem with this iMac? Display shuts off of course
    after 30 mins
You could set the iMac to go to sleep after non use. My Macs are
always sleeping when not in use, waking them up takes seconds.
Unlike windoze, never knew if it would be locked up or not.
    5. Should I get the extended warranty? I'm usually
against them, but I am expecting this computer to
last me at least 3 years (for $1300 it better!)
before I upgrade, as I got that much out of a Dell
and from what I understand, Mac's do not age nearly
    as fast as Windows pc's.
It is well worth the cost. Never know what might happen. Also
it is good insurance for future upgrades. I traded in my G4 tower
purchased two years ago for 75% of what I paid for it. Apple care
transfers, giving the buyer the remainder of your warranty.
    Thank you for any help,
    -Evan

Mail, the application, should not cannot contain any message data assets. The Mail application must sit in the Applications folder, and be usable to every User Account on the Mac, and not just yours (understand you might be the only user, but making a point).
Mail, the folder of data for just your emails, should properly be at Home/Library/Mail.
Let me ask again -- in the Applications folder is there an Icon for Mail, and is it the Icon of a postage stamp, or is it perhaps the Icon of a folder?
However, let me note, that now that I have booted back into Snow Leopard, and used Get Info on the Mail Icon in the Applications folder, it is reported to be 77.5 MB! Looking at it from other boot volume (Leopard) does not see all the elements of its "package" apparently. My apologies.
Now it is time for a different test -- Create a New User Account, and as that New User launch Mail and try setting up one new email account - if POP select to leave messages on the server. See the following if not familiar with adding a new user account:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
The reason for doing this is to test the Mail app itself, and not to permanently switch to a new user account. Tell me if the behavior continues in that New User Account with Mail?

Back up all data, then uninstall the Razer and Blackberry software according to the developers' instructions. Reboot and test. Most likely there will be no change. In that case, see below:

  • My Mountain Lion mac crashes after resuming from sleep

    Hello
My Mountain Lion mac crashes after resuming from sleep every time I use it
It happens every time the mac resumes from sleep and it started like a week ago
I remember installing the new updates for flash? and xquartz and nothing else.
I have also had microsoft word installed on my mac for about 1 weeks before this problem started so might be related to that
Please share with me any tips on how to fix this because I am really annoyed of losing stuff after each time my mac resumes from sleep

I have an iMac bought may -11, and it worked fine with Snow Leopard.
About a week ago I bought and installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2. Everything went fine, and all software worked ok. iPhoto had some problems, but after installing update the system prompted to do, it has worked ok.
The propblem occurs now and then, when computer is waked up from sleep. The Desktop occurs, but no software starts, not even System Tools untlil rebooting the computer. Of course, I can not reboot the computer from "Apple menu", but holding the power button down.
This is very embarassing! OsX Mountain Lion has turned out to be a very big disappointment. I installed id because of iCloud (i have a new iPad, too with iOs 6 installed).
Can anyone help me? Is there any other way to solve the problem than re-installing good old Snow Leopard?
I would not like to do that, I bought Mac because I was bored in re-installing and recovering!
    Thank you

can only access emails through OWA after migration from exchange 2007 to 2013, in other words unable to access mails through outlook or from other Applications services.
    needed RCA ... plz help..

    Hi,
From your description, you can send and receive messages only when you use OWA after migration from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013. If I have misunderstood your concern, please let me know.
In your case, I recommend you create a new test mailbox in your Exchange 2013 and check if you can send and receive messages on Outlook. If yes, it is recommended to create a new profile to solve this issue.
Hope this can be helpful to you.
