System sound disables app sound.

Certain apps unexpectedly have this issue. This applies to Garageband for example.
It has been like this forever, and it hasn't been fixed.

Example system sounds — alarm, Siri.

  • Disable System Sounds [3000 N500]

I hope this is not a double post
Please advise on how to disable the system sounds on a Lenovo 3000 N500. I'm reffering to the very annoying "beep" at critical battery power, or plug/unplug of the AC Adapter.
I have disabled all the sounds in Vista CP, but that didn't solve the problem.
    thanks in advance
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This worked on my Lenovo 3000 N500:
In "Control Panel" open "sound",Then in sound, in the "Playback" tab, double click on the "speakers" icon. This will open up a "speaker properties window. Click on the "Levels" tab and this will show two areas, speakers and PC speaker, click on the little speaker icon for the pc speaker and it should show a circle with a slash through it showing that the pc speaker is disabled. Click OK or apply whichever is highlighted.

    Low Battery Alarm -->Disable
    Volume Beep --> Disable
    Password Beep --> Disable

    Hey all
I'm using the KDE4.1 daily svn builds. Does anyone know how to disable ALL system sounds?

  • System sound when starting up, but no app sound

I was using Audacity with the lame extension to chop a sound file to make a ringtone.
Now I can't get my sound to work.  I unistalled Audacity and ran the Lame remover but I still don't have sound.
    Any suggestions?
I already repaired permissions a few times but that did not help.

Loss of sound after running Audacity
Applies mainly to Audacity 1.2.4 and earlier
An Apple issue whereby certain other applications lose sound after running Audacity has now been largely resolved in the current Audacity 1.2.5 (Intel), 1.2.6 (Power PC) and 1.3.x Beta releases.
If you have lost sound on your system after running Audacity, make sure you have the latest Audacity stable or Beta version , and drag the entire contents of any older version to to the trash.
    Audacity 1.2.5/6:
Launch Audacity and follow these steps:
    1.
Click Audacity > Preferences and on the Quality tab, set:
Default Sample Rate to 44 100 Hz
Default Sample Format to 16 bit
    2.
On the Audio I/O tab of Preferences:
Set "Recording Channels" to mono or stereo
Check the box "Do not modify audio device settings (such as sample rate)".
    3.
Set the Project Rate button bottom left of the Audacity screen to the 44 100 Hz.
    4.
Close Audacity then click on the Mac Hard Disk and then on Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.
    5.
Click on the Audio Devices tab and on the left-hand (input) side, select your built-in audio device in the "Default Input" and "Properties For" dropdowns. On the right-hand (output) side, select your built-in audio device in the "Default Output" and "System Output" boxes.
    6.
On both the input and output sides, change the "Format" dropdown boxes to have the same settings as Audacity (that is, 44 100 Hz/2ch-16 bit, or 44 100 Hz/1ch-16 bit). The "1ch" or "2ch" refers to mono or stereo respectively.
Note: If you are on OS X 10.1 or earlier, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Sound and perform the same changes as above.
    Audacity 1.3.3 and later:
Generally speaking, the later PortAudio v19 I/O library used in Audacity 1.3.3 and later should not change system sound settings. Therefore Beta Audacity does not have a "Do not modify audio device settings..." box, and it is not necessary to launch it to restore system sound. Simply follow the instructions above for 1.2.5/6 to reset system sound in Audio MIDI Setup.
However, if you have previously run a 1.2.x version of Audacity on the machine, it is recommended to completely reset the 1.3.x Preferences before launching Audacity again. Do this by opening audacity.cfg in a text editor and removing all the content except the line "NewPrefsInitialized=1". See here for full instructions.
Note: There is one other known reason why sound cuts out on G5 machines after running Audacity. It is due to a faulty headphone (external output) jack, whereby a component internal to the jack becomes bent from use so that the computer still thinks the headphones are plugged in. Because the user may be plugging headphones into the back of the computer when using Audacity, the timing of the occurrence would make one think it was the software, but it is not. When this is the problem, the user will notice a red glow coming out of the headphone jack. Try plugging your headphones back in and then gently manipulate the headphones plug up/down and left/right so as to bend back the internal component to its correct position. When done, the red light will go off and sound will be restored.

  • System sounds cause gnome to freeze on startup

So far I've found six threads describing this problem, but all remain unresolved. So please excuse my starting yet another thread but I thought it would be the best way to bump them all.
Situation - new to Archlinux but not to Linux. I managed a network install of the base system and then added xorg, gnome and a few bits and pieces and got it all going, more or less. The problem is that sometimes when gnome starts up after the login screen, it freezes after loading the top and bottom panels. Usually the Applications/Places/System menus are visible, and sometimes the workspace switcher on the bottom panel, but no other panel app icons, nor desktop icons. There is a mouse pointer visible which I can move around but left and right clicking do nothing. Usually I can get into a virtual terminal with ctrl-alt-F1, but sometimes I get no response from the keyboard at all and I have to push the computer reset button to reboot. The following threads seem to describe the same problem:
This one. The OP suggests deleting ~/.gnome2/session but there ain't no such file/directory on my system.
    That one.
    Yonder one.
    Another one!
    Oh no! Yet another one.
    The plot thickens. A clue.
I can confirm the OP's finding in the last thread. Enabling system sounds causes the problem. Deleting the ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/sound directory (not, ~/.gconf/gnome/sound) means that gnome starts up OK, but disconcertingly quietly.
So - any solutions? Any way to get gnome and all the bells, whistles, cheeps and chirrups?
Oh - and I'm enjoying Arch. I'm posting from a (silent) Arch desktop now. I needed a challenge after Gentoo.

    Thanks for your comments.
I updated today which included esd-0.2.38-1, the new kernel, and other bits, but I still get a lockup if I disable system sounds. But one useful thing (for me). I installed KDE over the weekend - and it plays its sounds OK. Before that if I had a gnome freeze I had to go into a virtual terminal, take out the ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/sound directory and reboot. But now, when gnome froze, I ctl-alt-backspace'd, and then logged into KDE which played me a merry tune just to keep my spirits up. I was then able to delete the sound directory, log out and then log back into a now thawed out, albeit silent, gnome.
Avoids a reboot - which is good.
By the way. Now I've got two wastebin icons (one labelled Trash, the other Wastebin) on my gnome desktop courtesy of KDE. I know why, and I've come across this irritation before, but is there any way of getting rid of the extra desktop icon in gnome without losing the KDE one? I've never figured this one out.

  • System sounds do not work since upgrade to ML 10.8/10.8.1

Hello.  Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I have the persistent problem of my system sounds not working, after my laptop sleeps.  Fresh after a restart, they will work..then, after screen saver or sleep, they will not.
    Here's what doesn't sound:
    - Apple mail sounds (sending, receiving)
    - alert sounds
    - Sys Pref -> Sound -> any/all sound effect selection
    - screen capture click
    Here's what always works fine:
    - the pop-pop-pop sound when I increase/decrease the volume
    - iTunes
    - any sound from audio/visual embedded in browsers
    - sound from all 3rd party apps
    Internal speakers are selected
No problem throwing out sound to airplay, etc.
No problem with non-system non-Mail sounds
All sounds work fine after a restart...but after a sleep or a screen saver, they will cease working until the next restart.
MacBook Air, 10.8.1 (also was noticed under 10.8)
    1.7 GHz, 4 GB
I do see posts where people are experiencing the same, but no real solutions.  I have found & trashed the prefs file (from other posting solution) but that did not solve this persistent issue.  The sounds always DO work fresh after restart...just after sleeping, they do not.  Thank you  :-)

Yeah, just to keep everyone breathlessly updated: there has been no fix for me.
Amusingly (mostly not..) on the plane yesterday, when I plugged in my headphones, I was greeted with about 3 weeks' worth of Sent Mail and Alert tones.   Good times.
The fix involving Audio MIDI Setup and momentarily changing the internal speakers integer dropdown list used to occasionally work for me...but lately it has not. I'm just making do with no mail sounds, like a chump.  How I wish GrowlMail worked with 10.8 because I could get my sounds that way.

  • Lag when system sounds play on Retina MacBook Pro

I have a problem on my Retina Macbook Pro (Mid 2012, running on 10.9 Mavericks) that has persisted for quite some time.
Essentially the problem is that whenever an application plays a system sound, the application lags for a few seconds. However, this comes and goes.
For an example of what I mean, the lag happens when I make the following actions:
    - Deleting a file in Finder (Trash sound should play)
    - Using a 'find' prompt in an app like Chrome, Xcode, TextEdit, and entering a string that cannot be found. That is, the lag occurs when I type the character that causes no result to be found. (Beep should play)
    - Pressing 'delete' (backspace) in any app's text field with no text present (Beep should play)
    - If I go to System Preferences -> Sound, and select a new 'alert sound' in the Sound Effects tab, the lag occurs and the Console prints "System Preferences[52828]: Error 268435460 setting AlertSound"
While my computer is in 'problem' mode, every single app is guaranteed to lag when these events happen.
But as I said, the problem comes and goes. It first happened after I had to reinstall one day. I think I screwed something up with preferences, permissions and such, because it took a while for me to fix everything up. But I don't think I quite fixed everything, because this problem started to occur ever since then.
The problem will appear for days or weeks at a time and then disappear for weeks. Just now I'm posting this thread because it had actually gone away for months, and just reappeared today. Nothing that I have found can explicitly start or stop this problem from occurring, it's seemingly random.
Does anybody have any idea why this would occur, and what can be done to fix it other than a complete clean reinstall?
    Thanks!

Sorry wrong post to this thread.
    Now the right post.
No OS X can not use all 8GBs of RAM when the Windows Virtual Machine is running. As long as the Win VM is up and running it take all the RAM you allocated to it. So if you allocated 2GBs of RAM to the VM OS X can only use the other 6GBs. As for the CPUs OS X can use all the cores and or Virtual core as all current Intel CPUs show as double the physical number of cores. So if you have a Dual Core i5 it will look like you have 4 cores. It's done with HyperThreading.

  • Lost system sounds, then all sound gone even after installing a Live! 24-bit ca

I'm having a migraine over a computer at work. It has Windows Xp Pro installed as the OS, and originally had an integrated sound card. At some point, before I was even hired in, the system sounds stopped playing. The BIOS for the machine showed that sounds were On. The Windows Default sound scheme was selected, nothing was muted, volume was cranked, no system sounds. When you even tried to test system sounds in Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Sounds Tab, the Play button was greyed out. At one points CD's and other sounds could be played. Now nothing plays, with an error stating the device is not working properly, or is in use. So today I installed a SoundBlaster Li've! 24-bit PCI card. Card went in, installed all the drivers, installed all software from the install CD, opened the Creative sound manager to test the speakers. Clicked the 'Channel' button and 'Left Channel' was heard from the left speak, and 'Right Channel' from the right. Clicked the noice button, both speakers played noise. So card works and speakers work far as I know. However same old story with system sounds and any other sound, no matter the sound file type. Cannot play music from a CD. I've tried disabling the old integrated sound device, still no luck. I've never had this much trouble over sound, and of course as luck would have it the machine is for a user with a ton of sensiti've and very important data so I want wiping the system to be an extreme last resort (the user is also important enough to bother with the demand for sound for the sole purpose of hearing the .wav sound played when Outlook gets a new e-mail otherwise I would not have spent more then 5 seconds dealing with this.) Anyone have any tiny clue as to what could effecti'vely tell a machine it's not allowed to play any sound whatsoever?

well.....in what ways it isn't good and what are you comparing it with?

  • Media Volume has Influence on System Sounds??

    Hi
I've set my Ringtones and Alert Sounds to full volume and turned off the ability to change the volume with the volume buttons at the side of the phone.
Now if I lock or unlock my Phone, I can hear that typical Lock or Unlock Sound at a "normal" volume.
Those sounds keep having the same volume even if i change the media volume (for example full volume), using the volume buttons at the side of the phone.
If I turn on some music or other apps, using the Speaker, i hear it with the volume I want just as it should be.
BUT if I now lock or unlock the phone (turned off music before), I hear it with the volume I just listened to my music before.
It doenst matter how high or low the volume is, it is always the same.
So, the system Sounds usually dont react on the media volume setting. But in case i listen to any media, the system Sounds will automatically use the media volume setting i just used.
I can not imagine that this is a wanted thing. Has anybody else got the same issues?

    Hi samiam,
From the right corner click Volume icon. And choose “Mixer”. You will get this ,here you can choose the application sound level.
Just as S.Sengupta said, right click the volume and choose “Sounds”, you will get this. Here we can choose all the program event sounds.
    Best regards

  • System Sounds Have Started Playing Through Internal Speakers

I have a Presonus Firebox sound card through which I play all my audio. Suddenly and mysteriously, all my system sounds (email sent, email received, trash emptied, etc.) are going through my internal speakers, while all my apps remain as they were -- iTunes, FCP, Firebox, etc., all play audio through my sound card and speakers. In System Prefs, the Firebox is chosen as input, output and sound effects.
Why is this happening, and how do I fix it?
    Thanks,
    Giraut

    Hi Giraut,
I don't have such a device to check, nor even external speakers, but I suspect this invisible file is corrupted, I'd drag it to the desktop and see if you can set it again...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/.GlobalPreferences<12digitHexNumb er>.plist
Might check Midi Setup Utility to see if it's set for 44.1K also.

Did you remember disable the integrated (onboard) audio and uninstall it's drivers/software?
Have you tagged the "Use only preferred devices" -option on Windows Audio config (on same page you set the Sound Play/Recording and MIDI playback devices)?

My audio problem is opposite to one of your bullet points. I have a new operating system, sound was working fine, now on skype cannot be heard, iTunes will not load. All were fine before the change over. Over the past few days have gone through every type of troubleshooting offered online, my HP dv1000 came with the problem and I fixed it on the old os, just forget what I did. • Keeping FCP audio levels separate from system sound

    All --
Apart from completely shutting down Mail and iChat and any other app that could conceivably make a noise, is it possible to adjust the monitor volume of FCP separately from the system sound? Sure, I could ramp up the master levels in the audio mixer, but that would affect the actual sound levels in the edit, no?
Obviously, I want to crank my speakers when editing, but I'd also like to know when I got new mail or an iChat invitation without the alerts blasting my ears off.
    Any ideas? Thanks!
    -s

Sean - I'm not sure if you can do that. I'd guess that both the internal speakers and the stock outputs of the Mac Pro would be on the same 'circuit'.
I have an RME Fireface 400 firewire audio interface (probably overkill for your needs). In FCP preferences, I can chooose the Fireface as my sound output device.
All the system sounds go out the internal speaker of my Mac Pro.
There are lots of 3rd party audio interfaces that are far cheaper. You might ask which would be best in your desired price range on the Logic or Garage Band forums.
    Does that make sense?

  • [SOLVED]XMMS stops playing when KDE plays a system sound!

Well the subject says it all... if KDE reports an error or something... and plays a sound... XMMS stops playing... it's really annoying...
I use ALSA for the sound server and for XMMS output... never had these problems on other distros...

I assume you are using ARTS for kde sounds ?
Try setting the auto-suspend delay to 0 , Control center > sound and multimedia > sound system , general tab
If that doesn't help, disable the sound system.
In order to get kde to play system sounds without ARTS :
Control center > sound and multimedia > system notifications > player settings > use an external player
the play command from the sox package works very well.
