System sounds cause gnome to freeze on startup

So far I've found six threads describing this problem, but all remain unresolved. So please excuse my starting yet another thread but I thought it would be the best way to bump them all.
Situation - new to Archlinux but not to Linux. I managed a network install of the base system and then added xorg, gnome and a few bits and pieces and got it all going, more or less. The problem is that sometimes when gnome starts up after the login screen, it freezes after loading the top and bottom panels. Usually the Applications/Places/System menus are visible, and sometimes the workspace switcher on the bottom panel, but no other panel app icons, nor desktop icons. There is a mouse pointer visible which I can move around but left and right clicking do nothing. Usually I can get into a virtual terminal with ctrl-alt-F1, but sometimes I get no response from the keyboard at all and I have to push the computer reset button to reboot. The following threads seem to describe the same problem:
This one. The OP suggests deleting ~/.gnome2/session but there ain't no such file/directory on my system.
That one.
Yonder one.
Another one!
Oh no! Yet another one.
The plot thickens. A clue.
I can confirm the OP's finding in the last thread. Enabling system sounds causes the problem. Deleting the ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/sound directory (not, ~/.gconf/gnome/sound) means that gnome starts up OK, but disconcertingly quietly.
So - any solutions? Any way to get gnome and all the bells, whistles, cheeps and chirrups?
Oh - and I'm enjoying Arch. I'm posting from a (silent) Arch desktop now. I needed a challenge after Gentoo.

Thanks for your comments.
I updated today which included esd-0.2.38-1, the new kernel, and other bits, but I still get a lockup if I disable system sounds. But one useful thing (for me). I installed KDE over the weekend - and it plays its sounds OK. Before that if I had a gnome freeze I had to go into a virtual terminal, take out the ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/sound directory and reboot. But now, when gnome froze, I ctl-alt-backspace'd, and then logged into KDE which played me a merry tune just to keep my spirits up. I was then able to delete the sound directory, log out and then log back into a now thawed out, albeit silent, gnome.
Avoids a reboot - which is good.
By the way. Now I've got two wastebin icons (one labelled Trash, the other Wastebin) on my gnome desktop courtesy of KDE. I know why, and I've come across this irritation before, but is there any way of getting rid of the extra desktop icon in gnome without losing the KDE one? I've never figured this one out.

  • System-config-printer-gnome utility freezes when "adding" printer.

I've just started adding my wireless printer to my desktop, and while reading about CUPS in the archwiki, I discovered "system-config-printer-gnome". I installed it with pacman, and then set it up like the wiki said. Now when I run system-config-printer and press "Add", I get this error output in my terminal:

Does anyone know what could be wrong? I've done some Googling, but couldn't find anything related to this. I also couldn't find anything related to setting up a wireless printer manually with CUPS, so this way seemed the easiest way of adding a printer. Thanks
P.S. I am using GNOME, and all my packages are up to date.

Oh wow. That worked perfectly! I guess when I saw that in the wiki I assumed that it was for USB or parallel port printers since I saw "localhost". Sorry to waste thread space!
    Thanks so much guys!

  • Latest Apple Update causes Eclipse to freeze on startup.

I've been using Eclipse for development now for the past four or five months on my Macbook Air.  However, when I ran apple updates this afternoon, and restarted, Eclipse began freezing every time I went to load it.  This is a pain in the ***, and software updates should never break working software.
This machine is primarily a development machine and I'm extremely hesitent to keep using it as such if it can't be updated without risk of wrecking my environment.
Perhaps it's possible it updated to a newer jvm version, but I'm still perplexed why this would cause an application to completely not load.  I am able to run other java programs fine from the command line.

  • System-config-printer-gnome freezes when trying to "Add" a printer

I have the same issue that was discussed in the thread system-config-printer-gnome utility freezes when "adding" printer. Specifically, when I try to add a printer using system-config-printer gui, the window freezes and throws back the following code:
    mechoid9@ordinateur:~$ system-config-printer

    File "/usr/share/system-config-printer/asyncipp.py", line 196, in send_reply

    physdev = model.get_value (iter, 1)
TypeError: iter must be a GtkTreeIter
The solution mentioned was to use the CUPS web interface. This lets me add a printer (which is part of the solution), this is not the complete solution. I've used the utility before, and I'm comfortable with it, and I think that I should be able to use the gnome utility to add the printer if everything on my system is up to date (which it is, as of this posting). I would like to know why it doesn't work anymore (and I'm of the impression that it has something to do with how I've installed python on my system).
I've googled the issue, and perhaps I didn't look around thoroughly enough, but I couldn't find a solution. So if somebody knows where to look I'd be glad to look there.

I have the same problem. I noticed that it occured only after installing the following driver packages.
    hpoj-0.91-16 hplip-3.11.3-1 net-snmp-5.6.1-1 foomatic-db-engine-4.0.6_20101215-1 foomatic-db-4.0.6_20101215-1
I did a workaround by installing the printer using the webinterface, removing the drivers again, setting the samba login details and then reinstalling the drivers.
But this problem should really be fixed.

  • Lightroom 3 freezes at startup

I have Lightroom 3 on an IMAC with 4 GB memory.
Up to a few days ago it was working properly.
A few days ago someone disconnected a photo flash card while it was loading into Lightroom. I suppose that might have caused the trouble because since then I cannot start Lightroom 3 anymore it just freezes at startup.
I deleted com.adobe.Lightroom3.plist as was recommended by the Lightroom support site but this does not help.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for any help

I had the same problem on a MacBook Pro, 4GB, OS X 10.6.8, Lightroom 3.4.1.  Specifically, Lightroom would freeze (spinning beach ball) on the opening screen.
One solution was a reboot, and I did this several times in the past.
Interesting. I'd be curious if anybody who starts seeing this with 3.5 finds it to also be related to the MassCameraStorage process or if the hangs are distinct. The symptoms sure sound right in line.
Following up on the suggestions in this thread, I did started Lightroom from the Terminal with the traceback flag.  The only output was,
2011-08-26 11:57:40.596 Adobe Lightroom 3[9398:903] Enabling noisy tracebacks.
Well that cofirms your hang isn't caused by a thrown exception in Lua. It was a long shot, so I'm not too disappointed. Thanks for running that experiment!
Looking at the Activity Monitor, the process with the highest CPU usage by far was "MassCameraStorage", with 80%+ CPU usage.  I killed that process, and Lightroom remained frozen.  However, when I restarted Lightroom, it started up OK.
I'd be curious if others run into this MassCameraStorage process. I don't see any processes by that name on my system, but I also don't have any cameras plugged in, either. I've seen a number of hangs (usually during card/camera imports) reported related to image capture. Do you know where it comes from? (an Apple component or perhaps something specific to a particular camera manufacturer). It'd be interesting to see the contents of the "Open Files and Ports" tab of the panel that comes up when clicking on the "Inspect" button in Activity Monitor. Unfortunately, it looks like that tab is only available for processing running with your logged in user's privileges and that one might be a system process.
Anyway, it sounds like maybe LR is tangling with some other process when accessing attached USB devices (devices are enumerated  in LR to determine the enabled states of import commands and "mass storage" would include hard drives, card readers, some cameras, etc). That may be useful information for others that see the hang to provide to see if there's a pattern to attached devices among the bug's victims.
It may also suggest an API we're using on the main thread (so slow response blocks startup) that we should be more cautious about.
    Thanks -- DT

  • Mac Pro on 10.6.8 freezes after startup

Since updating to 10.6.8 my 2009 MacPro will freeze after startup when opening finder, safari and itunes (so far). No beach ball and ForceQuit doesn't work. Resolved only by a hard shutdown with the off switch and restarting.  Never a problem on restart. This problem seems identical to that described in an archived discussion (after an update to 10.5).  Refer: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2018112?threadID=2018112  .
I have followed those suggestions without success:
-run AHT and no issues found
-run disk utility to verify and repair permissions
-used Rember to check memory and no issues
Grateful for any suggestions; thank you.

It means that a third-party system modification you installed is causing the problem.
Reboot as usual (not in safe mode) if you haven't already done so. Don't launch any of your usual applications. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Next, this command:
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
    ls -1 /Library/{InputManagers,StartupItems}
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • I movie 09 freezing upon startup of progam

I have i movie 09 and have been using it successfully without any problems for over 6 months. During that time, I have been working on a movie. It is currently 45 minutes long and includes sound effects and songs that I have added from garageband. I recently added a voiceover from Garageband, via i tunes and now the whole projects freezes on startup, i cant even access any of the functions.
    Could it be:
1.i tunes incompatibility, either i movie or itunes needs an update, or both?
    2. Movie is too long?
    3. Problem with i movie..
I still have another 30 mins of the movoe to complete and want to be sure that I can continue to edit this film at a later date. I would also like to store it on an external drive, but have read in other posts that this is not as easy as it sounds. Has anyone had the same problem, or can offer any assistance here.
lots of work has gone into this project and would hate to lose it so far into the project.
at the moment, I have not upgraded any program (i movie, i tunes, garageband) in fear of losing any of my projects, should i be fearful.
any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • My MacBook freezes occasionally...is there a way to bring it out of frozen?  What would be causing it to freeze?

My MacBook freezes @ least once a week.  I have to shut it down.  What might be causing it to freeze & is there another way to bring it out of frozen other than shutting it down?

Not enough free space on the disk can cause the system to freeze...
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space
Check the startup disk in case it needs repairing >  Using Disk Utility to verify or repair disks
MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.5)  <  your profile
If that is correct, when you can, you need to update to v10.6.8
Updates are available from your Apple menu > Software Update...
Not enough RAM can cause the operating system to freeze also. You may want to consider increasing memory. To see how much memory you have installed click your Apple menu icon then click About This Mac. That will prompt the System Profiler. See Memory under Hardware on the left.

  • OS 10.4 freeze on startup

My iBook G4 is freezing on startup:
After pushing the power button, the gray screen appears with the MAC logo, then the spinning gray/black wheel begins it's cycle, then stops spinning after approximately 30 seconds, then the whole system/computer shuts itself down.
    Please help.......thanks a million
Note: I have recently encountered a battery issue which has the battery yielding about 25 minutes of power before shutting down.
Also do not have my startup disc any longer.....strike 2

While the battery may very well be the cause; I am inclined to think you have a Kernel issue. The spinning gear is a visual que to the kernel loading. If that process does not complete and you never get to a blue screen (the blue screen seen just before the loginwindow launches), then the kernel is not completing its initialization. Haver you tried a boot into verbose or safe mode?
If you are unfamiliar with booting into such modes, additional resources can be found at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
While the safe mode may not do the trick, you can try verbose mode by holding keys: command + V immediately after starting your machine. While verbose mode may get you started, it is always risky when you are in single user mode -- so be careful and consult resources, such as the Apple Knowledgebase.
    On a last note, if it is a battery issue; one other soultion might be a reset on the Power Management Unit: you can achieve such a reset by skimming through the following resource;
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
--remember to read through the entire document and attempt to pick out the procedure that matches your machine.
    Hope that helps

  • No System Sound

All of a sudden my MacBook doesn't play any of the system sounds (alert, new mail, empty trash, etc.). It just stopped working the other day.
Today I was trying to figure out what happened, and went into the sound section in System Preferences, and I noticed that the drop down menu next to "Play alerts and sound effects through:" is grayed out. I don't know if that's the problem, or it the problem is something else. Either way, I'd like to be able to get my sounds back. Any suggestions?

Well, it seems to have corrected itself. The only thing that changed was I removed the SuperDrive firmware updater from my startup items, which had installed itself after the recent software update. I'm not sure if that was the cause of the sound problem or not.

  • MacBook Pro Freeze on Startup

    Hi there,
My MacBook Pro is freezing on startup. When I turn it on it makes the startup sound and gets to the Mac OS X blue bar, but the blue bar only gets to about halfway and then it just stops. i have to hold down the power button to turn it off.
I've only been able to start it up by reinstalling from the MAC OS installion discs (archive and install), which I've had to do three times. When I turn it off though and restart, same problem all over again. I've also run the repair authorisations etc in Disc Utility - everything seems ok.
It will start up if I hold down command V ( which I think is safemode) but not normally at all.
Once the system is actually going, it's all fine, so I'm thinking it's not a hardware problem, only a software one. Maybe something to do with an update I've downloaded? But I have no idea how to ID the problem... and I'm back to my orginal OS X operating system now.
I've had my MacBook Pro for just over a year and until last week, no problems at all. Only thing that's changed is that I've started using the airport for the first time - till now I connected to the internet via a USB ethernet adaptor. Perhaps that has something to do with it?
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks so much.

How did you "switch?" as the only way Vista 64-bit to install over 32-bit is a clean install.
Or explain both machines. Are you running Vista 32-bit on one and a separate licensed 64-bit on 2nd machine?
Have you run chkdsk or tried to verify that all these hard restarts aren't adding oil to the fire?
Not what you want but have you taken a look into OpenOffice 3? not bad.
