System Spell Checker 'stuck' on American English

Hi,
Running OS X 10.8.3.
I have my language settings set to Australian English. How ever, when typing in system applications such as Mail, or Notes, the OS X System Spell checker is spell checking based on American English.
For example;
when typing an email, it picks up the word "colour" as being spelt incorrectly (with the squiggly red line under the word).
Amerian English = Color
Australian English = Colour
Please see attached pics where i have Australian English set.
Trouble Shooting I have tried;
• verifying & repairing priveliges
• resetting P-RAM
• change language to American English, restarting, setting to Australian English, restarting
Spoke to AppleCare, they basically ended up telling me to re-install the OS.
Any input or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry, missed that.
I can't duplicate your problem:
Perhaps try setting up a new user account and see if the problem persists when you are logged into that.

• System spell checker

When I change the input source from one keyboard to another (e.g. U.S. to German) I would like for the dictionary used by the system spell checker to automatically change to the corresponding language, but I can't seem to find a way to do this. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be grateful.

You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
Also make sure that [X]"Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu has a tick.
You can also try to toggle the "Check Spelling" item off and on again.
• Use spell check for German and English

Is it possible to use German and the English spell check but not switching 'languages feature' in system preferences all the time, for a Mac book with intel core 2 / 10.5.5?
Maybe putting an icon on the dock to use when an e-mail is typed in German and switch later again to English?

flowerpotter,
I don't know about Apple's Pages, but with Microsoft Word you can turn on spelling and grammar and it will work as you type. I find that useful for possibly correcting sentences/words at the end of a session.

• Spell Checking only works for English after 10.4.9

After installing and reinstalling (combo version) of 10.4.9 on my Intel MacBook Pro, the Spell Checking is working only for the English language.
Seems that other languages are not installed (although they are at the spelling pop up). When I activate them, nothing works. No spelling as I type, no suggestions at the spelling window...
Any one know how to reinstall only the languages?

Nothing?

• Can't find the System spell checker custom dictionary

There's no /user/library/spelling.
Opened textedit and misspelled a few words.
Right click - Learn Spelling.
Red squigglies go away so it learned the word.
Looked for any file modified at this time and nothing shows up.
Where's the custom spelling dictionary?
Tried a different user and it's there.

And you've rebooted so we know it isn't like in a Cache?
I'd get EasyFind...

Add a unique spelling to the Dctionary, like QwertyChrisCA, then search for File Contents of QwertyChrisCA.

• American English to English English?

I'm getting a little frustrated with having to respell everything in my documents that is spell checked in an American English format i.e. organization/organisation pediatrics/paediatrics.
I'm sure it is simple to do but can anyone tell me how to change my spell checker from American to English?
Thanks

Use the Edit button to put British English at the top of the list in system prefs/international/language. Also check Inspector > Text > More > Language to be sure it says British English.

• I had selected Gujarati spell check instead of English. How can i redress.

In the email seciton when I tapped spell check icon, I was given a choice and through error I clicked onGujarati(which is an Indian language). Now all my work in Englsih in the email shows red underscore wavy lines. Also I cannot use spell check facilty for the English language. How can I address this problem?

At the app level, you can set the dictionary via Edit > Spelliing and Grammar > Show Spelling and Grammar
At the system level, you set it at system preferences/keyboard/text/spelling (or maybe system preferences/language & region/text/spelling).

• Wrong English spell-checking dictionary

So I didn’t install the OS on my new MacBook Pro and it has the wrong spell-checking dictionary - ie US-English and not English-English. I have no idea why. How do I sort this so I can labour and not labor, colour and not color?
And while I’m at it, can I move the user dictionary from my old PB [OS 10.4.11] to this 10.5.8 machine?

Yeah. It was the first place I looked. The /languages says ‘English’ - not British-English or US-English. Just ‘English’. There are no options.
Also you can select British English in Edit > Spelling for each app (Inspector > Text > More > Language in Pages).

• Switch iPad to spell check uk english for crying out loud

Started with simple document created on iPad2 using Pages 1.6 (504) - noticed spell check default is US English (eg summarize) but I need UK English.
Went through all the settings in iOS Pages to try to switch - no luck.
Went to my iMac, Safari, iCloud, pulled down document, (incidentally noticed it had a problem with missing font despite fact that I'm using defaults throughout), opened in Pages '09 v4.1 (923) selected all, went to inspector, changed to UK English, saved.
Uploaded document to iCloud/iWork - selected 'replace' when given option.
Went back to iPad. Noticed Pages documents had not refreshed. Shut down iPad. Re-started. Selected document, opened, and magically it had reverted to US spelling. Also now has a problem with missing font Calibri - in fact I don't give a tinker's cuss which font it uses, I simply want it to spell in vernacular.
Repeat all of above. Confirmed document when opened on iMac had indeed kept UK spelling, ie problem has something to do with iPad settings.
All-in-all wasted an hour. So much for iCloud/iWork. iGiveUp.
Any ideas?

what's not clear is which keyboard is active since there's no indication.
You can make it clear by holding down the "globe" key and choosing what you want from the list. Or how about deleting the keyboard which does not say English (UK).
Spellcheck normally follows the keyboard on iOS devices and what app you are using is irrelevant.

• Spell checker/Other languages

Unlike other applications I can't seem to change the dictionary file on iWeb so right now I'm stuck with american english, any way around this or some way to let the developers know they forgot something?

There does not appear to be an option in iWeb for spelling but, for me at least, it seems to pick up on the International settings you have in System preferences.
I tried this by typing colour and color - the US version was highlighted as wrong giving colour as the correct version. Despite looking everywhere I can't find an option to change language so check to ensure your language settings are correct (I think you need to restart if you make changes).
Best of luck,
Michael

• Delete spell check languages

Hi,
I type with a mixture of british english and french and I switch way too often to change it in the spell check every time so I put the spell check language to multilingual. But there's too many languages in the list and I'm afraid that a misspelt word can be a valid one in italian or portuguese or american english and make me overlook the error. Is there a way for me to get rid of the languages I won't use?
And one more question about the spell check. Does the language selection affect the spell check in every Cocoa program? And is "multilingual" only an intermediate state for the language setting and change as soon as I start typing a few words and it decides which language I'm typing it?
My ultimate goal is to have the spell check verify for british english and french only for every application I run.
Thanks

Is there a way for me to get rid of the languages I won't use?
I don't think so.
Does the language selection affect the spell check in every Cocoa program?
I think you choose the dictionary for each app independently. The default is determined by what language is at the top of system prefs/international/languages.
And is "multilingual" only an intermediate state for the language setting and change as soon as I start typing a few words and it decides which language I'm typing it?
An app has no way to figure out what language you are typing in. It just applies whatever dictionary you have chosen.

• Customising OsX built-in dictionary/spell checker

Hi,
I am running 10.3.9.
The buit-in spell checker seems to be set for American English. I would like to set it to spell check in U.K. English as default. Is this possible?
Christo.

Hi Christo
Yes. In System Preferences > International, tab to Languages where you can select British English, so in future 'colour' for example will be shown as spelled correctly. If it is not in the list click on Edit to find it. Once found move it to the top of the Languages list by dragging it.
Also, if you select a word the dictionary doesn't know you can tell it to learn it, so next time it won't show as incorrect.

• About spell checker

Hello
At this time, the embedded spell checker is gone.
Of course the System's spelling checker is available BUT for a foreign user it's boring.
As a french guy for instance, my checker is set to check french.
When I enter this forum, I am polite enough to try to write in "quite" english.
With the old embedded checker it was automatically set to english.
Now, I must set my system checker to english and reset it to french when I leave the forum.
This is exactly what I describe as upgrading backwards.

Yvan,
you could simply set your system spell checker to "Multilingual" - works just fine for me for writing in multiple languages...

• Safari spell checker

Hi all, could someone help me with something that's probably staring me straight in the face anyway?
I want to change the spell checking in Safari from English US to English UK, and for the life of me can't remember how to do it.
ta very muchley!

Hi Sinisterish!
That is a system-wide setting.
Go to System Preferences/International/Language
Drag 'British English' to the top of the list.
Job done!
