  • Using Photos (iPhoto) as Desktop Background and system startup time

I've been beating my head against the wall trying to figure out why my iMac is taking longer and longer to boot (mostly after software updates).
My stopwatch shows a little over 3 minutes from chimes until there is a usable UI.
Through process of elimination, I finally found the problem. We have over 24,000 pictures in iPhoto, and like to cycle through them as the desktop background. The problem with wanting to do this is OSX seems to have to enumerate through all 24,000 before it selects a "startup background", which takes around 2.25 minutes. Not bad, considering, but still an awful startup experience. I was starting to think I was running Vista or something.
Wondering if anyone else had run across this and if there was any known workaround, short of picking another style of desktop background?

I keep my favorite photos in a separate wallpaper folder. I select my photo for the desktop manually, but I wonder if you could not set up a folder of favorites and rotate among these. Perhaps with fewer photos in a folder, your computer would not have to take so much time going through them all.

  • Slow system and application startup times

    Hi,
I've got a 17" Macook Pro (Early 2011) 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 - ever since I bought it I feel like it runs a little slow.
I've been a long-time mac used but I feel a little disappointed with this machine.
e.g.: Startup time takes around 4 minutes.
Applications take around 10 seconds to start.
Chrome sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to start, about the same to quit.
My Xbench scores fluctuate wildly - best I've ever got is 220, worst is 18. 160 is about the average.

    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=537725
    http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=544252
I feel that tried everything including:
    - Creating a new user
    - Repairing disk permissions
    - DIsk verify and repair
    - Removing all startup items
    - Installing extra ram (currently at 8GB)
It runs well most of the time but frustratingly slow sometimes and there doesn't seem to be any anomalous activity in activity monitor. I feel that it could be the hard disk, but don't know (I always have 250-350gb free).
    Any help appreciated!

Thanks for the link. I've never seen that page before but I have done everything in that list.
It's not a spinning beachball issue - the system doesn't lock-up often it just takes a **** long time to do some things. I didn't really realise it as a problem until I started using other people's older/lower spec'ed macs and noticed that they run FASTER than mine.
Activity monitor pics - just after a restart with my usual apps running:

    Memory https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pq7/activity-monitor
    Disk https://skitch.com/e-hellodaniel/83pxg/activity-monitor
Even using Skitch to take those screenshots took ages.
It's almost like the disk or CPU is throttled back or bottlenecked, and always has been...

  • Start WorkprocXX, 1 times since system startup.

Getting a bunch of messages like this is the system log:
Start Workproc14, 1 times since system startup. PID 21175
Looking at the trace file for one of these I see stuff like this:
        Tue Jan  6 07:03:44 2009
         WP has reached abap/heaplimit = 40894464 bytes
        Tue Jan  6 07:04:19 2009
ThNeedWpRestart: abap strategy == kill, restart
         ThWpRestart: restart wp (pid=21140) automatically
         Disconnecting from ALL connections:
Nothing seems to be failing but I haven't been able to find any doco on this.  So what's it telling me - that the processes are using too much memory?

    Hai,
You are right this is due to abap/heaplimit parameter.
If the value of abap/heaplimit has been reached, the work process is restarted after the dialog step has ended. If the consumption of heap memory exceeds the quota abap/heaparea_(non)dia, the user context being executed at this time is cancelled before it can be completed.
Always the value of the parameter abap/heaplimit should be smaller than abap/heap_area_dia or abap/heap_area_nondia, so that the dialog step that is running can still be executed. This prevents the work process from working against the operating systemu2019s swap space limit.
In your case the wp in question has reached the heap limit and then it got restarted.
This is common, but if you want to overcome this issue you can tune the memory parameters, but you need to be very careful in doing that. Because bad tuning can lead to poor performance of the system.

    Hey there,

Looking at the times, I see this only takes a fraction of a second but my startup time is still much much longer than it ever was or should.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of this? I deleted the Captive Network Assistant.app from my computer but the checking continues. It seems to be a rarely mentioned issue doing a web search, and nothing like this, although  it's referred to in certain articles.
    Really weird.
    Gregg

I'd take another look at your startup log.
If you look closely, you'll see that all those log messages occurred in the space of 30 milliseconds - by comparison, a human blink takes about 150 milliseconds.
So while I don't doubt you're seeing slow startup time, I don't think CaptiveNetworkSupport is the culprit, per se.
Fortunately, since every startup event is timestamped, it should be easy enough to determine what task is taking the most time.
As for CNS, it's not just an iOS thing - it's standard in Mac OS X, too. I'm also under the impression (but can't confirm) that it only checks the networks that you've previously connected to, so check System Preferences -> Network -> AirPort -> Advanced -> WiFi and delete any networks you no longer use or expect to connect to.

    can you help me please?

It seems, that all Windows machines develop this type of long startup-times over time. Conclusion: Bad quality operating system . There are a few things you may try: Disk cleanup, disk defragmentation and avoiding non-neccesary start-up programs running msconfig. My experience is, that all of these have limited impact, so the ultimate solution is a clean re-install of Windows. To do this, back-up all user data and use recovery disks as available.

  • 8 minute long startup time

Here is my console system log. Not sure how to interpret this. I just wiped the hard drive and installed leopard and then migrated my stuff from the tiger backup. Tiger startup was a minute or less. Now it is 8-10 mins. Any thoughts?

Hi r, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I don't claim to know how to interpret these things, but that's one of the more interesting I've seen!
    MechanismDestroy
Can't imagine what that's all about.
    A few ideas anyway:
Basic, run Repair Permissions, and run Repair Disk.
That Gas Dashboard widget keeps showing up. Turn it off.
Open Activity Monitor and see if any processes are taking a large amount of CPU. If so, quit them.
Go into Sys Prefs, Network, and see where your AirPort is on the list. How are you connected anyway?
One more: in Network, click on Advanced. How many networks are listed? Drag the one you use to the top of the list, and get rid of others you don't use (make sure to click "OK" and then "Apply" when exiting). It looks like the MBP is looking for a network it can't find, and that can take significant time.

  • IMac  with SSD and Hard drive very slow startup time

I have a new mid 2011 iMac with a 250gb SSD drive and a 2TB drive. All are from Apple as BTO options. When I first used the iMac my typical startup time from the hardware check chime to desktop was typically 12 seconds. Something, somehow has been changed because now it takes over one minute to boot up from the SSD. After the chime I hear the fans running and also the 2tb drive.  After about 20 seconds I hear the hard drive spin down and then after another 20 seconds it starts up again. Once it starts up the boot up sequences contiunes and returns to the desktop. After this the iMac perfprms as normal. I have tried running disk utility from the recovery partition. I have also reinstalled Lion as well from the recovery partition and neither of these change the outcome.
When I first got the iMac I used time machine to restore from a previous machine into the 2tb partition and then went into advanced options in System preferences>Users&Groups to point to my home folder on the 2Tb drive rather than the default one on the SSD. That was working fine until I discovered software problems with both Preview and Textedit where they would not start up with this arangement. I then repointed my home folder to the default one on the SSD which cured this issue with these programmes leaving my data remaining on the 2Tb drive. Since doing this I have had the one minute boot up problem.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how I may overcome this problem and get my iMac back to starting up in twelve seconds from the SSD as it did before.  Any help would be appreciated on this topic.
    Thanks.

Where do you maintain your Home folder - on the SSD or on the HDD?
If you want to do a clean install (from scratch) then do the following:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Before you go to the extreme of the above would you do this:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Just in case your system slowness is due to something eating up CPU time. Oh, and if your system is brand new check the upper right corner of the menubar for a "dot" inside the Spotlight glass. This means Spotlight is indexing the drive. Until it finishes your system will be quite sluggish.

  • Energy Saver Startup times

I wrote a script that opens an online radio station when iCal tells it to to act as a sort of alarm clock for me. The only way that this works is because I tell my computer to turn on at 9:55am via the Energysaver Scheduler option so that the computer can start up and allow iCal to open and activate the script. However, being that I am in college, I do not wake up at the same time everyday. Energy saver can only schedule the same time for every weekday, everyday, or one day at a time. Just one time. Do any of you know a way to set my computer to wake up at different times on different days?
    Thanks

Jegdart: I have no intel-mac at home, but tested that too on a friends intel-mac. Set startup-time on MacOS, shutdown and indeed machine starts into windows. Later my friend said that it didn't work anymore after he had once booted into windows and shut it down before the startup time would kick in (startup-time settings lost?). I would be very gratefull if you/someone could verify this.
    1. Also we found out that when you restart into MacOS again, the system clock is way-of and back in windows, again way of. Both have a different system time but after a short period (network time server) this gets corrected. Documentation suggest the chip time is/should be GMT.
    2. Bootcamp/EFI acts as a bios-driver for windows to be able to run. So i have to test if
a tool like http://www.boraxsoft.de/CMOSTimer_eng.html will be able to poke thru and
really set the RTC timer. (It would be sad if i destroyed my friends chipset with such a tool)
Way better would be if Apple added startup-time to the bootcamp control-panel in windows.
thanx for your suggestions so far.

  • Weblogic 7.0 startup time is very bad

We just upgraded to weblogic 7.0, jdk1.3.1_03 and are on solaris 8. We find that
the startup time is horribly slow and very pathetic. Talked to support, not much
of help there except that they accepted the fact. Removed UDDI, webservices.jar.
Any startup performance improvements from anyone out here? The startup time sucks
a lot and the support wants us to wait till SP1 which would eat away a lot of
developer time waiting for the server to start. Does anyone else have a problem
regarding the same? In 5.1 the whole application used to start up like in 2 minutes,
now we see that it takes about 8-10 minutes which is totally unacceptable.
Any help would be appreciated as this is wasting a lot of our time out here. Is
migrating to weblogic 7.0 worth it given its performance compared to 5.1?
    Shiva.

I have one domain running. In development mode we have only one server.
The development server without anything deployed in it alone takes more
than 2 minutes to startup. Below is the complete dump of the server when
there is nothing deployed in it.
    Time stamp here is 10:39:29.

  • Keep Web Sharing from launching at System Startup

    If I run
    $ sudo apachectl start
and look in Preferences > Sharing
Web Sharing is checked (and rightly so).
But, if at this moment I were to restart my Macbook, Web Sharing (Apache) would be started.
How do I keep Apache from starting at System Startup?
Ideally, I would like to be able to 'manually' start and stop Apache using apachectl, and I don't want to have to run
    $ sudo apachectl stop
    or uncheck Web Sharing
before shutting down or restarting the computer.

If web sharing is on when you restart your Mac, the Mac will restart the service automatically (I'm hard-pressed to think of a reason why one would not want it to work that way, and I suspect the devs had the same problem).  If you don't want that to be the case, there are a couple of options. Easiest, I suspect, would be to create a script (using the apachectl command you already know).  You can set that up with launchd to disable web sharing at login time (for various reasons running scripts at shutdown - though possible - is discouraged; such scripts can accidentally cancel shutdown, and obviously won't be run if there's a crash or power interruption).  You can adjust the permissions so that it can be executed by a normal user while still running as an admin (make sure you disable user write permission to that file, so someone can't hijack it to run other commands as admin), and then the script can be used to manually start/stop web sharing as well.
so, the script in /path/to/script.sh (owned by an admin account with 755 privileges)
    #! /bin/bash
    if [ "$1" = "start" ] ; then
         apachectl start
    else
         apachectl stop
    fi
the launchd script (saved in /library/launchagents as user.apache.stop.plist)
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

set response to button returned of (display alert "Enable or disable web sharing?" buttons {"Cancel", "Enable", "Disable"} default button "Cancel" as informational)
if response is "Cancel" then return
if response is "Enable" then set todo to "start"
if response is "Disable" then set todo to "stop"
    do shell script "/path/to/script.sh " & todo

  • Applescript "deamon" on system startup or login item

    Hello:
I wrote an AppleScript script and saved it as an Applet that needs to run in the background whenever the system is up.
1/ I tried to set it as a startup item, so that it would start running as soon as the Mac is on -- however without success. I did not find out what the proper way is of doing this.
2/ Then I tried to set it as a login item for each user. This is not as good, but I thought it may an alternative, 'buying me some time' to figure out how to do it properly as a system startup item. Launching the app works fine, but the user cannot log off again, because the system cannot seem to quit the script. So I have to stop the process in Activity Monitor, obviously not a solution.
3/ Also, I would prefer the script to not show up in the Dock.
Any help is appreciated, especially on question #1.
    Thanks,
    HAL

    Hello twtwtw:
Thank you for your excellent advice and sorry for my ridiculous late reply.
Your first suggestion works smoothly, adding the "Application is agent" key to the Info.plist file via Xcode hides the app.
Also, I created the launchd launchagent plist file as you suggested and put it into /Library/LaunchAgents. The file name is irrelevant, I presume. The app itself is now in a subdirectory of /Library/StartupItems, which I thought is the appropriate place.
However, the app does not start, when a user logs in, instead I do have a permission problem with the following entry in Console:
    Apr 29 19:08:31 My-Conputer com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[114] (...[277]): posix_spawn("/Library/StartupItems/SlowFan/SlowFan.app", ...): Permission denied
    Apr 29 19:08:31 My-Computer com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[114] (...[277]): Exited with code: 1
    So I have 4 questions:
1/ I do not understand why I am getting the permission error, because "System" has read & write access to the folder as well as on the application. What am I missing? My own user also has the same read & write permission, so if I start it myself, it works fine.
2/ Just out of curiosity, do you know what is the difference between the files in "/Library/LaunchAgents" and "/Library/LaunchDaemons"?
3/ In addition, what I really wanted was to launch the app, when the system starts, even if no user is logged in. Is this possible?
4/ If not, how do I avoid that the app runs multiple times in each user context? I want it to run once only.
As usual, any hint is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    HAL

  • Attach CSV volumes from filter driver during system startup

    Hi,
We have written a filter driver to track Hyper-V CSV volumes in order to track the modifications in those volumes for backup purpose. When the Hyper-V host is running, we are able to attach the CSV volumes from the driver without any issues. But during Hyper-V
host startup, our driver failed to attach the csv volumes.
We suspect that filter driver failed to attach CSV volume, since Cluster service was not started at that point of time during the system start up. If we attach the CSV volume later, it works. However, for the continuos tracking we want our driver
to track the modifications from the system startup itself. I believe, we need to load the filter driver once after the csv service is started.
Configurations of filter driver are as following(inf file).

I don't reboot much, but when I reboot my Mountain Lion MacBook Pro (Late 2008) it takes much longer to boot. Shutdown seems to take forever to get to the Boot beep,  then after the system gives me the apple screen it takes a longer time to get to the logon screen.
