  • Com.apple.launchd DumpPanic - System hangs for 5 mins on boot

We've been having a problem with one of our Mac Pro's for a while now.
It hangs for about 5 mins on boot - slowly gets past grey screen and hangs on blue screen.
    The Mac is a 2.66 Quad-Core Intel.
The problems began a while back, when running photoshop - the scratch disk filled the hard disk entirely on a really large document and the whole system died. On reboot the system started to hang in the boot process and has done ever since.
The system also appears to be sluggish and doesn't respond as well as an identical machine next to it.
I checked the boot log and noticed a few issues, some of which i've now fixed - ie a faulty USB device causing some problems.
This is what i've got now:
28/04/2011 12:41:53 com.apple.launchctl.System[2] launchctl: Please convert the following to launchd: /etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisoryd.plist
    28/04/2011 12:41:53 com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.usbmuxd) Unknown key for boolean: EnableTransactions

    28/04/2011 12:47:12 com.apple.launchd[81] ([email protected][85]) Exited with exit code: 1
    What i've tried:
Repair Disk Permissions - using disk utility and disk warrior.
Cleaned cache and settings using Maintenance and Onyx.
Turned off automatic time/date setting from server.
I then backed up and reinstalled the OS.
The OS is now on a separate 160GB SATA drive, with the previous 500GB SATA system drive as data storage.
I have installed back to 10.5.8 and still get this problem.
It seems to me that there is a delay of about 5 minutes after this line:
    com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.DumpPanic[29]) Exited with exit code: 1
However after LOTS of googling and scouring forums i can't seem to find a definitive answer as to why this problem exists.
    Can anyone help me?
My next step is to book an appointment with a Genius, but thought i'd ask on here first.
Another strange conundrum is that if i try to upgrade to Snow Leopard, i insert the disc - open up the installer - click restart and the system restarts, but nothing gets installed.
Thanks in advance for any support you can provide.
    Cheers,
    Rob

I took this machine into the Genius bar yesterday and they managed to fix it after about 45 minutes of tinkering.
The error i've detailed above is a kernel error, caused by something not loading properly as the system boots.
First of all it took ages to boot to the installed Leopard, so they tried booting to an external drive with a clean install, but that was no quicker.
They ran hardware analysis and everything seemed fine.
The fix was to clone snow leopard across from a pre-installed clean version on an external drive, onto the internal HDD and that did the trick - its back up and running and is quick as ever before.
    Thanks Genii

  • How to stop the boot process after the GRUB menu?

    Hello there.
I am getting an error message in the boot process, after the GRUB menu, but I can't read completely the message because it is shown too fast. So, how can I stop the process when I see the error message, for writing down it?
    Thanks in advance.

I didn't try this before, but if you use systemd, you may want to try systemd.confirm_spawn to invoke interactive booting process, so you can start the services one by one manually therefore locate the one throwing out error message.
It is explained in the systemd manual:

  • The maximum report processing jobs limit configured by your system has been reached.

    Hi,
We are using Crystal report in ASP.NET (Microsoft .NET 3.5) environment for a number of years but everything went quite well.
But recently, we have migrated to .NET 4.5 ,and started having this error.
"The maximum report processing jobs limit configured by your system has been reached."
As per internet search, some recommended to use the Object.dispose() approach. We have applied recently ,and it is still NOT working
Our JobLimit in the registry on production server is 75.
    This is report display
    This is report dispose
Seeks your technical expertise here  thanks in advance.

See if this Article will help:
Crystal Reports Maximum Report Processing Jobs Limit
BTW.; do not set the JobLimit key in the registry to -1 (that is for CRS OEM edition only).

  • Booting process stopped

dear hp, i'm your biggest fan for all of your product (notebook mainly). i've a problem with my first notebook (HP Mini 110-1179 TU, s/n: CNU941B4D1, p/n: VV784PA). i purchased this notebook approximately 2,4 years ago. after 7 months, i don't use this notebook for 11 months and i leave it in safe place and full air conditioning nonstop 24 hours. 6 months ago, i want to use this notebook back, so i turn on this notebook, and here the problem.
booting process stopped when the windows icon appear in the monitor. i wait it for many hours and booting process never start well. to clarify this problem, i show this image below:
so, i brought this notebook to several computer service center. i wasn't satisfied with their answer, and i lost my original windows after they offer to reinstall my notebook (from windows 7 to windows xp) but not solved my problem at all. last, hp service center in my city (pekanbaru, indonesia), they said the source of problem is "chipset" (i'm still unsatisfied with their answer). and the question, what causes this problem in my notebook? how to solve this problem?
thanks... i hope you can help me

    Hi, Dan
sorry about your problems. I don't have a 17", nor ALS, but here 3 remarks:
    1) "LED 4 lights only if the computer detects an over-temperature condition. This LED will be OFF when the computer is turned on and running at the correct temperature." from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2831, so this is no problem, and it says that everything should be fine otherwise.
    2) Your problem might be memory related. I see that you have 2GB RAM. I don't know for the 17" ALS, is that in one chip? if not, you might try to unplug all but one RAM chip and try to boot.
    3) did you try the Apple Hardware test , look here for more info: http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&q=Hardware%20AND%20test%20AND%20im ac%20AND%20g5%20AND%20als.
Hope this helps. Please, post back!

  • Stuck at 'Reached target graphical interface'

    Edit:
An important edit on mkinicpcio. Previously I reported it the other way around.
I went through a complicated process of turning my first single-partition arch install into a Windows 7 dual-boot install (windows first) with separate /var and /boot partiotions.
    Notable stuff:
    0. Now MBR instead of GPT
    1. PArtition order changed
    2. fstab now uses by-lebel (custom unique labels) mounting instead of UUID's
    3. I had problems recreating kernel (initramfs) images. During the last, successful attempt I issued:
    mkinitcpio -p linux -k linux
    instead of
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    (I was desperate )
    4. Since restoring clonezilla image of my arch was braking the existing Windows installation I restored my arch install using
    rsync -ax <source> <target>
This should be a complete list of the stupid things I did.
    Now I get just
    [OK] Reached target graphical interface

My first thought was to wonder why on eath you installed so many video drivers.  That likely would not cause this problem, but it is just silly - and it is a separate symptom of the same underlying problem:
We've now learned that you did not install these drivers, nor the system, but two different people (neither you) have installed and configured your system.  One of these people doesn't even use archlinux, and as you say has "limited knowledge" about it.  Talk about the blind leading the blind ... but you are not blind, you've just opted to close your eyes and not learn anything about your system.
There is no way for us to know what is happening on your system when you yourself are clueless.  You should just start from scratch and do it right following the beginner's guide.  But even this should happen only after you ask yourself why on earth you'd want to use archlinux - it's really not what you seem to be looking for.
As for losing your usb drive ... can't you find another anywhere?

  • System always starts fsck's at boot and can't start normally.

First of all, let me say that this forum is awesome. I've just started my first real ArchLinux experiment and you guys have helped me out so much already!
Anyway, my system keeps starting fsck's at boot. It then starts counting to 1 minute and 30 seconds, after which it stops the fsck and drops into into emergency mode. I can only boot by passing the "fsck.mode=force" parameter to the kernel from the boot manager.
I copied what I think are the relevant lines from journalctl:

  • Cisco Aironet 1262N stuck during boot process

I am banging my head against the wall trying to figure out why my AIR-AP1262N-A-K9 will not boot all the way. It will get all the way to initiating the interfaces and stop. I can never get to controlling the cli. This is my first time with a cisco ap but from everything that I read it seamed very easy.
This unit from what I understand will work all on its own with no controller. Hence it is called a "standalone" model. Yet it seems to be looking for something to finish during the boot. Below is the out put during boot. The last line is where it stops.

  • Boot process stuck

I rebooted my system and now it always gets stuck at [OK] Reached target Graphical Interface
    The problem is similar to
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 5#p1204195
    and
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 8#p1195188However I can't do anything no key work
    not enter
    not even CONTROL+C
I'm posting this using mint live cd and wanted to back-up my home dir but i apparently don't have to permission to see the files in it as the rights belong to root of arch install so the only option i now have is to rescue/repair my arch install
PLZ note that i have posted this on my other thread but i think i am required to create new threads for different problems
I thought this problem is related to my other thread
    I don't know.....
This is my other thread : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=155983

First, if you have somewhere you can back up your data to that's always a good idea, but I suspect you should be able to solve this without any damage to your home partition.  But to be on the safe side:
    1) Boot into a live disk - Mint should work fine.
    2) Mount your archlinux home partition.
    3) copy all the files you need, or everything if you have space, to some other disk/media
-- If you do not have access to the files, something is wrong with how you mounted it in Mint, this has nothing to do with accounts in the arch install.  Don't use GUI tools, they just get in the way of you knowing what's really happening.
    To start fixing things:
    1) Boot a live media again.
    2) Mount all your partitions properly and chroot into your system (there is a good wiki page on this)
    3) Disable any network services (eg `systemctl disable netcfg` or whatever else you may use).
    4) Reboot, remove live media, and successfully boot your arch system
    5) Return to troubleshooting the blocked wireless issue.
This is sounding more and more like the problem I had last year.  Not booting is an *easy* fix.  It fails to boot because any attempt to bring the wireless up freezes everything.  You must have a service trying to bring up wlan0 on boot, which then causes this freeze.  Again *this* part is easy to fix.  Disable that service and you'll be able to boot just fine and your system will be no worse for wear.
The wireless problem, if it is like mine was, will be a little more pesky, but also very solvable.  But lets go one step at a time and get you back to a bootable system.
I just wanna inform you all the things i did trying to configuring my wifi
    1st : i installed all of these  wireless_tools, iw, wpa_supplicant + netcfg
    2nd : Then i downloaded this compat-drivers-patched 3.7_rc1_6-3
Now after all this i kept on getting that rfkill error
so i used the info on this blog :
    http://www.geekmind.net/2011/01/linux-w … e-due.html
After which i did manage to turn hard and soft block to no
to try to get it work and it was after that i rebooted the system
Also i rebooted again you were right about something being wrong with netcfg because my screen flickers when it initiates netcfg
However i still don't get how to solve it
    1. you say any live media but how am i supposed to change root in my linux install
    2. When i use arch cd after the cd loads all the files i finally see the same terminal that i saw when i first installed arch
Its the one where the cd logs in you automatically into the root account... Should i use this terminal?
    3. if the answer to the 2nd question is yes then since arch already exists due to the execution of the following command when i first installed arch
    # mkdir /mnt/arch
should i create something like arch2 or archlinux instead or arch(which alreay exits)
Finally which article were you refering to : i think its the change_root article but i wanna make sure

    OR

  • [SOLVED] GDM: black screen after "Reached target Graphical Interface"

    Hi all,
Since an upgrade on my work PC a week back or so, it no longer boots properly into GDM / Gnome. It will boot up to this message:
[ OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface
Then the screen will flash to black and back, then again turn black permanently. I can still go to other tty's. It's just GDM that's being frustrating.
There are no useful logs for either GDM or Xorg - the last log for both dates from the last time things worked properly. Nothing useful in dmesg either. I've already reinstalled xorg, xorg-drivers, gdm, etc., but no luck.
Some guidance would be most appreciated!

I finally found an answer here:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=188434
I've been using infinality-bundle, and those packages seem to have been moved (?) I had to add this repository to `/etc/pacman.conf`:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/un … ity-bundle
Then a system update, and presto!

  • [Solved] Boot process hangs for installed Arch and installation usb

Hi. I've been using Arch Linux for around 6 months now and I'm in love with it. It is now my primary OS. However, I might have done something or performed some update, and I can no longer boot into Arch. The boot process hangs right before it should show the login screen (I'm using Gnome 3.6 with GDM). I see the following messages on the screen:
Loading Linux core repo kernel ...
    Loading initial ramdisk ...
    /dev/sda3: recovering journal
    /dev/sda3: clean, 330610/1749664 files, 5585671/6996827 blocks
And then it hangs right there. I have to hard-reboot after this.
I then tried to boot using the Arch Linux Installation USB (archlinux-2012.12.01-dual.img), which also hangs at a particular point, before it should show me the prompt. I took a picture of the screen where it hangs: Screen Capture. This is an issue with just my laptop, because the USB boots just fine on another laptop I tried.
I also have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.10 installed on my system, and I'm able to boot into both of them.
I have 2 hard drives: /dev/sda is a 120GB SSD, and /dev/sdb is a 500GB hard disk. My partitions are as follows:
sda1 - Windows 7 100MB System Reserved Partition (boot flag enabled)
    sda2 - Windows 7 OS
sda3 - ArchLinux (boot flag enabled)
    sdb1 - Ubuntu 12.10 (boot flag enabled)
    sdb2 - Just data
I ran bootinfoscript and below is the output:

Ok.. So my Arch Linux randomly decided to work. I'm sure I didn't do anything between my last "not working" state and my current "working" state. Below are a few things I tried:
I thought of trying an earlier build of ArchLinux, and downloaded archlinux-2012.11.01-dual.iso and made a bootable USB out of it. It still hung.
I was getting error messages during Arch boot that the last access time for the disks was at a future date. I found out that Ubuntu was using localtime instead of UTC and screwing up my hardware clock. I fixed it, and thought maybe the time issues were causing the boot problem. But fixing time didn't solve my problem.
I chrooted into Arch from my Ubuntu install, ran 'sudo pacman -Syyu' and updated my Arch install.
I thought maybe GDM isn't starting up. I re-enabled the service using 'systemctl enable gdm.service'.
I removed OpenNTPd and installed NTPd. Enabled the daemon using 'systemctl enable ntpd'
None of the above solved the problem, and rebooting to Arch still hung the system. So I stopped fiddling with it yesterday. Today, as usual, I just tried logging into Arch.. And it just worked out of the blue. The solution to me is as mysterious as the problem.
I told this to my friend who introduced me to Arch, and this is what he said:
Damn it computers, you were supposed to be deterministic!

    Yea I m using light-dm.
Ok, I just did another reboot to check the log files in the plugged-in/out case and I discoverd, that the boot process can not be completed as long as the HDMI cable is plugged in. (So my first Headline was unintentional right : ) )
I checked dmesg I both cases and they only differ only in the last few lines:
    PluggedIN case dmesg:
    [ 7.411395] brcmsmac bcma0:0: wl0: brcms_c_d11hdrs_mac80211: txop exceeded phylen 137/256 dur 1602/1504

    [ 67.101403] fuse init (API version 7.23)
As you can see at the time stamps, the boot process stops as line 3 and only continues at line 4 when I pull out the cable.
    PluggedOUT case dmesg:
