System Update -- Cannot connect to proxy server - SOLVED

I'm on a ThinkPad T61 running Windows Vista.  When I try to download from System Update, I always get the error message "Cannot connect to proxy server."
I have tried connecting to the Internet directly via Ethernet rather than through a wireless router--it doesn't make any difference.
I have also uninstalled System Update and then installed the version I downloaded from lenovo.com--same result.
System Update is an exception in Windows Firewall, and I have even tried running System Update with Firewall disabled--ditto.
Can someone please help me?

I have discovered one other potential cause of this behaviour.
If your computer is attached to a Domain, ensure you are connected to the Domain using a profile that has administrator rights when attempting these upgrades.
I was using a local profile with administrative rights, on a network connection that was outside of the corporate LAN, and I was getting the "Cannot connect to proxy server" error.
When I connected to our Corporate LAN and logged on to the machine with an administrative profile, the Proxy Server error went away, and I was then able to connect and download my required updates.
Just an FYI if you are doing this inside a large, firewalled LAN running from Active Directory.

  • TV System Update hangs at 21% with message "Cannot connect to proxy server"

    Hi,
just installed TVSU (latest version) on my Thinkpad T40 (with WinXP Pro SP3, German). Installs fine, runs perfect after reboot, recognises the correct model, initiates search for updates and then stops at 21% whilst  displaying
"Downloading Packet Information: Lenovo Help Center (1 of 1)".
A few seconds later the error message
    "Cannot connect to Proxy Server"
comes up with an OK-Box. Clicking OK terminates the entire update process, however TVSU continues to run properly and the process can be restarted with the identical result. This happens with Kaspersky Firewall on and off, no difference. Even rebooting the system w/o firewall and virus protection and starting afresh does not help either. Tried perhaps 15 times over the last 4 hours with same results. I assume that the error message refers to a proxy at Lenovo since in my local environment there is no proxy involved. The system is known to be free of viruses (clean installation yesterday and virus checked this morning).
    Note:
The display/error message above were translated from German into English so the corresponding original English displays/messages may look slightly different.
    Any ideas?
    Regards from Germany...

  • IPhone update:  "Cannot connect to Apple Server"

First time I got that message when I tried to update the iPhone software!   iTunes works fine, all downloads and updates.  Used the iTunes connectivity tests, all worked fine.  My security software and all setting haven't changed.  Nothing's changed.  Sync works fine.  When I plugged in my iPhone and started iTunes, it said an update is available, but then when I click update, it tries to connect to the server but then I get the message "cannot connect to apple server."  Help!  Thx

I disagree with the above two posts.  It is probably the same issue as  described here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17784700#17784700
Try adjusting the DNS servers on your PC to 8.8.8.8 and then trying it.

  • Cannot connect via proxy server

I need to use a proxy server in order to access university resources from off-campus.  (This is set up in Firefox using Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Settings > Automatic proxy configuration URL.)  I have been doing this for two and a half years with no problems, but all of a sudden it doesn't work anymore.  I have made no recent changes to my computer (Windows XP laptop) or browser settings.  I get a connection has timed out / the server is taking too long to respond error message whenever I try to access a website via the university proxy server.  This is only an issue for websites that require the proxy, such as databases that the university library subscribed to.  I can access all public websites as usual.
I have tried Internet Explorer and get the same problem.  If I disable the proxy server then my connection does not time out, I just get redirected to the university's "you are off campus and need to enable a proxy server to connect to this resource" page.  University technical support tells me there is nothing wrong with the proxy server and that I am set up properly to use it, and that as far as they can tell the issue is probably with my ISP.
I am pretty sure this is indeed as Verizon issue, as I took my computer to a coffee shop and was able to access university resources via the proxy server just fine using the free wireless.  I also got out my old laptop, reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled the OS (Windows XP), and had the exact same problem trying to use the proxy server via my home Verizon connection.
Incidentally, I am also unable to log in to Second Life using my home Verizon connection.  I get an error message saying the server isn't responding.  Again, I had no trouble with this using the coffee shop wireless.
I have spent about three hours trying to get someone from Verizon to address this problem, but keep being told I need to talk to someone else.  I have now described this problem to ten different Verizon employees but have yet to reach anyone who even seems to know what a proxy server is, much less anyone who can help with this problem.  If anyone out there has any suggestions, I'd much appreciate it.  I cannot do much work from my apartment if I cannot access university resources.

That Trace suggests there is a firewall at play somewhere blocking ICMP Echo. Since it's timing out past the modem I do have reason to believe that the modem may be up to something. Visit http://192.168.1.1/ and check the Firewall settings. If it's set to Low or High, disable it. If you are prompted for a User/Pass, try the following:
    admin/password
    admin/password1
    admin/admin
    admin/admin1
    Your Verizon Username and Password

  • Cannot connect to SGD server via proxy

    Hello
We have a recently installed SGD server running.
Some clients have been setup today with accounts to access it but none of them can get on at the moment. The error message presented is as follows:
Cannot connect to the server sgd.ourdomain.co.uk:443
The HTTP proxy "NTLM" at devicename:8080 failed to connect to the server sgd.ourdomain.co.uk:443
    The following response was returned:
    HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden
Clearly there's a proxy/firewall getting in the way.
Client has tried to connect from a network that is behind a different firewall and has been sucessful.
I'm hoping to get further details on the proxy/firewall setup but this could take a while.
Has anyone encountered this previously and if so, can any solutions be suggested.
    Thanks,
    Rob

  • I updated to mountain lion and now mail cannot connect to my server

I updated to mountain lion and now mail cannot connect to my server.  It says check your user name and password are correct.  Well they are, and were.  Nothing has changed except the mac OS.
Has anyone else suffered this and knows a way around it?  Too annoying to log into my mail every 15mins via a web page anymore.
Efforts tried to resolve this so far:
retyped user name and password, removed account and created a new account, restarted computer, software update, searched forums.  so far all have proved unsuccessful.
I have also written to my mail provider and am waiting for feed back from them, but if anyone has any advice it would be gratefully received.
    Many thanks,
    Mike

Many users upgrading to Mountain Lion have run into this problem, myself included.  You likely have corrupted settings for your  "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" for each of the failed Accounts.  Open Mail>go to Mail's Preferences>Accounts>select an Account in the left column to work on>then set up your Outgoing Mail Server which will INCLUDE resetting up your Password, as its asking you to.  Click on "SMTP Outgoing Mail Server" near the bottom of the Accounts window while your mail account is highlighted in the left hand column.  When you click on SMTP... you will see a drop down box icon offered at the right side of the line.  Click it and then select at the bottom of the the list "Edit SMTP Mail Server".  Fill in the required settings for your ISP mail account using their recommended settings.

  • BPC Excel: The system cannot connect to the server. There might be network

    Hi Guys,
I get the following error when i try to connect to BPC Excel: The system cannot connect to the server. There might be network or security issue.
This only happen on clients machines, I have installed the client tools on the server and tested, i can connect to Excel but not on the machine. My MS office version is the same as the one on the server. BPC is ver 5.04
Has anyone experienced the same problem.
your help will be greatly appreciated.

Let me summarize your issue to see if I may help.  If I cannot, then you will need to work with SAP Support on the connection problem.
    - You have a single or multi-server setup?
    - Installed using BPC 5.1 SP3, (or 5.0.502) correct?
    - You can enter the BPC on the server, both via BPC Excel and BPC Admin?
    - When you initiate BPC Admin on your client, so can connect to the Server and perform Admin operations?
    - When you initiate BPC for Excel, and walk through the connection wizard, you cannot connect to the server?
    - When you are in the Connection Wizard, are you using a path or a Server designation?
    - Is the system on a single domain?
    - When you added users to the Admin Security profile, they were selected from a DOMAIN?
    - You have processed security and assigned ALL TASKS currently and processed the MEMBER ACCESS profiles, yes?
After all of this, have you uninstalled 1 BPC client, cleared the ProgramFiles/BPC folder, and deleted the local stored BPC information?  If you haven't, just for simplification, I would attempt this process.
You also hae read all the SAP Support Notes regarding using Excel2007 with BPC and the issues you may experience?
Please let me know and maybe we can help.

    1. Unistall BPC

  • [SOLVED] Cannot connect to NFS server.

I'm trying to setup a NFS share at home. I have one laptop configured as a server, and one desktop client. Both are running Arch. I can ping both in either way.
For some reason, I cannot connect to the server. At one time, I could connect, but only while having an empty /etc/hosts.deny file (which obviously is very insecure). Now, I cannot even reproduce this.
Thus, I believe the problem is caused by either /etc/hosts.allow or / and by /etc/hosts.deny.
    Here is my server's /etc/exports:
    /shared 192.168.x.xxx(rw,sync,no_subtree_check,no_root_squash)
    And here its /etc/hosts.allow:
    ALL:192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0
    And finally its /etc/hosts.deny:
    ALL: ALL: DENY
Running 'rpcinfo -p' on the server shows output, while running 'rpcinfo -p <server-ip>' on the client prints out 'No remote programs registered.'
From what I've read, when the client wants to connect to the server, the server first checks in hosts.allow to see if the client's allowed to connect. So in my case, it should be able connect.
    However, when I run
    sudo mount -t nfs 192.168.x.xxx:/ /mnt/SERVER
    it tells me
mount.nfs: mount to NFS server '192.168.x.xxx:/`failed: RPC Error: Program not registered
And even if outcomment both hosts.deny and hosts.allow, running the same command prints out
mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting 192.168.x.xxx:/
I'm clueless. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Missed a detail on first reading. Your server's exports file makes the /shared directory available to 192.168.x.xxx, but your client mount command tries to mount the server's / i.e. root directory. You can only mount directories that have been exported.
btw, there's no need to conceal internal addresses like that - we all have them, and there's no way anyone can use them to track you down. My laptop address is 10.12.62.99, my server is 192.168.10.10, and my irssi/bittorrent/whatever machine is 192.168.10.69. I challenge anyone to hack me.
But if they know his IP, couldn't they use the lan IP to gain access easier than if they didn't know the subnet addresses? Since the thread is solved, I figured I would ask since I've always wondered about it.
Btw, for anyone have unresolved NFS issues, see this bug report. The arch devs aren't responding to it for some reason, can anyone tell me why?

    I do not know if you have this solved but I may have a solution. I have a MacBookPro early 2011 model with iTunes 11 installed. This is what I did to get it working;
    1. Close iTunes
    2. Open System Preferences
    3. Clicked on Network
    4. Select WiFi in the white column on the left
    5. Choose the Advanced button in the lower right hand side
    6. Press the Proxies tab
    7. Choose Auto Proxy Discovery (a tick will apear)
    8. Press Ok, then Apply on the Network section and close the window.
    9. Relaunch iTunes and see if it connects
    Hopefully it works for you.

  • I would like to upgrade my firefox but when I do it cannot find the proxy server

When I try to up grade to the new firefox 5.o from the 3.5 I currently have it cannot find my proxy server and I do not know how to fix this

In current Firefox versions the default connection settings are set to "Use the system proxy settings".
You can find the connection settings in Tools > Options > Advanced : Network : Connection<br />
If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then select "No Proxy"
    See "Firefox connection settings":
    * [[Firefox cannot load websites but other programs can]]
    * [[Server not found]]

  • RD Gateway Manager cannot connect to local server

    Hi,
I've come across a problem today where I'm unable to connect to our locally hosted RD Gateway server. We have one Server 2012 R2 machine with the Remote Desktop Services installed. The system was setup following the configuration wizard in Remote Desktop
Services section of Server Manager. One of our users has gone to connect to the main remote app hosted by this setup and received an expired certificate error. No problem I thought, checked the certificate on the server and it does indeed expire today. I'll
re-issue a self signed certificate through the RD Gateway Manager and all should be ok. On loading the RD Gateway Manager, clicking Connect to RD Gateway Server and selecting Local Server I get the following error.
"The RD Gateway Manager snap-in console cannot connect to the server "SERVER" because it is not a RD Gateway server."
I've checked that the services for remote desktop are running which they are, and I can connect to the server using standard RDP remote desktop.  Any ideas on where to go next to solve this problem?
    Rob

    Hi Rob,
It seems the issue related to certificate as can’t properly configured. You need to import the certificate and store in local computer/personal store. Please check below article and verify the steps for certificate and other related setting,
RDS: The RD Gateway server must be configured to use a valid SSL certificate

    Hope it helps!

    Summary
    Symptom
Some users cannot longer connect SAP GUI to any SAP systems e.g. via SAP Logon, SAPShortcut etc. although they have not made any update to either SAP GUI or SAP system. The attempt to connect to the SAP system ends with  error messages like this: "Logon balancing error: could not connect to message server (rc=9)", "service sapmsXXX unknown" or "service sapdp## unknown".
The detailed error information is as follows:
        Error: service 'sap...' unknown
        Component NI (network interface), ...
        rc = -3, module ninti.c, line 463
Detail NiPGetServByName: service 'sap...' not found

    MSN Messenger 7.5,Connection Troubleshooter
    Reason and Prerequisites
The reason for this malfunction is, that the datatype of the registry value HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters\DatabasePath
was changed from REG_EXPAND_SZ to REG_SZ.
The following programs are currently known to cause this registry change:
Starting MSN Messenger 7.5 "Connection Troubleshooter" (Build 7.5.0299).
Installation of MSN Messenger 7.0 or MSN Messenger 7.5 with the option automatic scanning and configuration of ports.
This modification prevents the expansion of environment variables in the value of the parameter. Therefore,
          %SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc
    is not translated to
       c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc
and the services database is not found by the API function getservbyname().
If you have checked the datatype of registry value DatabasePath and it is REG_EXPAND_SZ, apply SAP Note 52959 to check the appropriate settings in the services file.
    Solution
Start the registry editor and rename the registry value HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters\DatabasePath
Create an Expandable-String Value (REG_EXPAND_SZ) with the same name and value.
If more PCs are affected, you can export the correct value to a .reg file and import the .reg to other PCs.
If you have the same problem although you have not installed Microsoft MSN Messenger 7.5, create a customer message, collect the following information and attach it to the message according to note 541726 or upload it to sapservX (see note 40024):
Scan your workstations for spyware and viruses with up-to-date virus definitions. If you already did that what was the result ?
What software has been installed recently ? (client software, Firewall)
Create a registry export of the following key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstallon the affected and the unaffected PC respectively and attach the two .reg files to the customer message.
Are the users on the affected workstations logged on with administrative credentials (local administrator ) ?
Create an MPS Report Networking and Setup Perf of an affected workstation so that we can check if they use an software in common.
You can download the Networking MPS Reporting Tool at:
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd915706/MPSRPT_Network.exe
You can find a short description about the features of the tool at:
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd915706/MPSRPT_Network_Readme.txt
The Setup Perf MPS Reporting Tool is located at:
    http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd915706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE
Run this report too on identically configured workstations, which are not affected.
If you have already changed back the DatabasePath parameter and if after a while the value was switched back to REG_SZ perform the  following steps to help us to identify the reason for this problem:
Switch the datatype back to REG_EXPAND_SZ
Download Regmon from http://www.sysinternals.com on the affected machines
Enable auditing on the affected clients
Modify the settings of the eventlog so that no important entry is deleted!
    Open Regedit and highlight HKLM\System\CCS\Services\TCPIP\Parameters
Right-click on "Parameters" and choos "Permissions" and click "Advanced".
    Choose "Auditing" and "Add".
Add "Everyone" and select "this key only" under "Apply onto".
Check the boxes "Set Value" and "Delete" and click "OK".
    Apply these settings
Start Regmon and apply the correct filter settings:
Press the "magnifying glass" button  to stop the monitoring.
Press the rubber button to delete  all logged entries.
    Go to "Options Filter/Highlight".
Copy the following value to the include field: tcpip\parameters\databasepath and click "Apply".
Start Regmon by pressing the magnifying glass button
Verify that logging starts when you double-click the TCPIP Key in regedit!
If the datatype will be changed again,  provide us the output of the monitoring tools.
    Solution provided by Microsoft
This issue is said to be fixed as of build 7.5.0311 of MSN messenger.
