System update failed - strange behavior

Hello,
I have got the following problem: A system update (pacman -Syu) was interrupted because of power shortage. The system still boots but some things don't work anymore. For example the program wifi-menu returns the prompt inmediatly (without scanning, etc.). Then I tried to downgrade netctl  from the cache  with pacman -U  /var/cache/pacman/pkg/packagename but the the same thing happened, direct return of the prompt.
Any help would very appreciated. Thanks!
Bas

Hello,
'pacman -Sc' doesn't do anything. It's the same: direct return to prompt. As is the same with 'wifi-menu', shutdown -h "now"...
As I said this happened after a system upgrade was interrupted because the electricity went down in my flat...
I discovered at least part of the issue has to do wiith sudo. As superuser (using 'su') the programs start. But some things are still strange:
- netctl doesn't work anymore, a package (wpa_actiond) that is necessary was missing. I reinstalled it but netctl still doesn't work
- I tried to reinstall sudo but i get a lot of "exists in file system errors". When I do a pacman -Qo of the files I get the error "No package owns.."
I am starting to think that reinstalling the system would make the least effort...

Are you by chance connecting through a proxy?  If so have tried running with a direct internet connection and does it work. Also, have you tried running TVSU again through the proxy and did it work?

  • TV System Update fails to start

    Hi,
I'm running Vista SP2 32-bit on a T500.  Several months ago, TV System Update (v3.14) began to fail on startup.  The splash screen just flashes and hangs and it's difficult to stop it from within the Task Manager, so I have to reboot.  I have uninstalled System Update, cleaned the registry, reinstalled a newly downloaded copy and I've even installed the patch recommended for Vista SP2 somewhere in this forum.  I've also stopped and restarted the service within Administrator Tools.  None of this has resulted in getting past the flashing, hung splash screen.  It's driving me a little nuts.
    The ServiceStart.log reads as follows:
    Start service
The flag of monitor registry: False
    The tvsu_exe.log reads as follows:

    Hi,
go to windows services and find the services called "System Update". Open the properties of this services and go to the Log on tab. Make sure, that the "Local Systems account" is selected. Then go to Recovery tab and make sure taht by all 3 options is "Restart the Services" selected.
Let me know, if that helps.
Also check the Windows Event log if there is any note, what might be wrong.

  • ThinkPad Yoga 12 System Update fails to install fixes

I have been having the famous floating cursor problem using OneLink Doc and external monitor, mouse and keyboard. So I decided to run System Update (5.06.0034) to see if anything appropriate would inbstall. SU downloaded 4 fixes, and I selected all to install. The fixes downloaded, installation began and all fixes immediately showed "installation failed".
Therer was a manual update available in the failure message, but clicking on it did not cause anything to happen.
    The fixes displayed were
    - Lenovo Power Management Driver 1.67.10.4002
    - Lenovo Settings Dependency Package 2.3.3.41
    - Installed camera Driver for Realtek 6.2.9200.10252
    - ThinkPad BIOS Update (non-Vpro) 1.24.1.24
I went to downloads and downloaded and manually installed Lenovo Power Management Driver and Lenovo Settings Dependency Package (restarts required).
I ran SU and it showed only the BIOS update needed. I tried again to install and got the same failure.
I went back to downloads and the only BIOS update was 1.08, not 1.24.1.24. I tried to install it anyway and the install failed due to  "The process does not recognize this system. The process has been canceled."
I tried uninstalling SU and reinstalling and restart, I ran SU, downloaded and tried to install the BIOS and SU immediately displayed "installation failed".
So I have a couple of problems. SU is not working and I don't know where to look to try to determine the installation problem. The BIOS update info does not match up between SU and the downloads page.
Any ideas on where to look for the SU failure to install fixes? Do I need the BIOS?. I checked and my current BIOS shows as LENOVO GQET43WW (1.23), 1/21/2015.

  • ThinkVantage System Update fails

    Hi
I have a T61p with XP Pro.  I am not able to get any system updates for my machine through ThinkVantage System Update.  It says "An error occured while gathering user information." and then it fails.  I have no idea why it would say that.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi,
this might have multiple reasons, why this error is present. Here are only few, that I can think of:
    - registry entries with the MTM of your system information was changed, or is not present
    - the local TVSU repository was changed/damaged and therefore cannot read the the system info and the proces list correctly
In your situation I would do following:
    - uninstall TVSU using Add/REmove programs
    * reboot the machine
    - go to %ProgramFiles%\Lenovo and make sure, that there is no folder called "System Update". If it exists, then delete it completely
    - go to registry:HKLM\Software\Lenovo and also make sure, that there is no key called "System Update". If it exists, then delete it
    - download an install the latest TVUS from lenovo. com
    * reboot the machine
    - test TVSU
I assume, this should help as the error, that you are getting seems to be a system exception issue, where the applicaiton cannot reaco appropriately due to missconfiguration.
However, with the above steps, this should be fixed.
Anyway, please test it and let me know the results.
    Cheers

  • Automatic system update failed: restart ends at apple icon

I opted to accept all the suggested automatic online update performed. I got a message saying that the update of my system software failed. Now my ibook G4 won't fully restart. It stops at the apple icon. What should I do?

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Start from the install disc by placing it in the drive and holding down the "c" key as you restart. Click through the installation screen through the language screen and choose Disk Utility from the menu (Installer menu in Panther, Utility menu in Tiger). Highlight the drive on the left and click Repair Disk. If it reports errors and repairs repeat the process until no errors are reported and restart. If it starts you're done. If not you'll probably need to do an Archive and Install. Click on Options and choose Preserve Users and Network Settings and all of your files will remain intact. Once done go to the Apple Support page>Downloads and download the appropriate Combo down load for your OS. Either 10.3.9 or 10.4.11.

  • System Update fails on X201

I am running Windows 7 x64  with 4GB of memory and installed System Update 4.  When I run the application, it gets stuck on the splash screen for about 2 minutes and then disappears. I have powered the laptop on/off many times and no luck. Any ideas here?
    thx jc

I think i figured it out - or at least I hope.  Was trying to update my home machine via Remote Desktop from elsewhere.
When I got home, did a shutdown/restart, and tried to run again.  Of course, it worked.  Guess can't run remotely?
Now, to figure out why the Rescue/Recovery overwrote ALL of my old backups last night with a new one!  ARGH!

  • Thinkvantage System Update fails:

When executing Thinkvantage System Update on Lenovo 8168D5M  (Windows XP Professional) I get error message:
ThinkVantage System TvsuCommandLauncher has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I have downloaded and reinstalled System Update v3.15.0017.  Problem persists. .

    Hi,
can you please first clarify following sentence:
"I also tried to download manually and intall them separately"
Do I understand it correctly, that you have downloaded these files using ThinkVantage System Updates (TVSU) and also have tried to install these update using TVSU?
If that is correct, then could you please try just to deffer these updates/ just download them and then go to following location:
    %programfiles(x86)%\Lenovo\System Update\session
    - find the appropriate update(every folder name is the update name which contains also the executable)
    - once you find the corrcte update, then try to install it manually
    - once you are sure, that this update was installed correctly, start TVSU and check if the list have changed
If not and you still see the update version, that you have just installed, then this might be an issue with the version detection and might be caused, by the fact, that the update does not write the courrent version.
However, please test this situation and let me know, the results.
BTW: I assume, that you are using the version 4.0.0024 of TVSU.
Can you tell me the system, that you are using this applicaiton on? T60, or T400,....
    Cheers

  • Security update and strange behavior

First, let me say that most of the recent 10.4.X updates and security updates have casued me a lot of headache. It started somewhere around 10.4.7, and it seems that most of the updates since then have caused my iMac G5 to act up. An update would install and the computer wouldn't start back up afterward...it would hang on the gray logo screen. I have reinstalled OS X many times since then. I do not want to do it again since I may be getting a new iMac soon. Anyway, my current problem came after the recent security update 2009-005PPC - a lot of applications just won't start anymore. iTunes, iPhoto, Disk Utility, and a few others just won't start. Safari, Mail, Firefox all start fine. I can't open any .dmg files to reinstall the security update. Permissions have been repaired and I'm not sure what else to do. Any suggestions? I'm really frustrated and disappointed that this iMac has had so many struggles with OS updates over the years. No, I won't install Leopard because I've read that it will run on a G5 but it doesn't do it well.

Hi Rodney, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Permissions have been repaired and I'm not sure what else to do.
Very important, before repairing Permissions or doing any updating, Verify the Hard Drive & Repair if needed.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
What does Disk Utility say if you try to Verify it?

  • LMS 4.2.3 device and system update failing

I have upgraded to prime LMS 4.2.2 (from 4.0.1) and can not perform system or device upgrade. Using wireshark I can see why. it looks like LMS is trying to go to this old web link http://cco.cisco.com/cgi-bin/login to get software. I believe this was fixed years ago in bug CSCto46927.
Can I reapply bug fix CSCto46927 on 4.2.3 or is there another fix?
    Thanks.

"It is fixed now and the issue should resolve for all the LMS server's."
    Are you sure?
The error message is missed, so I asume the web page is answered correctly,
but something is wrong with package checking.
For example, at my LMS 4.2.3 the ASA package is 7.0. After checking it shows there is no package to update (Popup - "No updates available in Cisco.com for selected products")
    Tcpdump shows:
                284259296
Cisco Prime LAN Management Solution 4.2
                        283418817
LMS Inventory Config And Image Management Device Package Updates
                                ASA(7-1)
                                ASA(7-1)
                                    7
                                    4.2.2
                                    1
So there is an update to 7.1. Same problem with NAM (my ver is 6.0) and the newswest at cisco.com is NAM 6.1,
On the other hand the  " 4.2.2" is weird.
If a have a newer (patched) version, the packages are not available to me??
    Dont understand...

Trying to do a system upate. Tells me iTunes can't be installed. Asks me to quit the application but iTunes isn't open. Same message appears even when I shut down and restart. I have a mac OS X 10.5.8.
Not sure if this is what's causing everything to disappear from my iPod Classic (80GB) so that it leaves a black and grey screen.  Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

    Hey Paxos2001,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with your iPhone 4 after an update. If your issue persists after a normal restore with iTunes, you may need to attempt a restore utilizing recovery-mode:
iOS: Unable to update or restore

  • PS3 System Updates Failing at 99%

Thank you do much to Sevan68 your solution worked brilliant, just wish Sony would pass on decent advice l like this and not try selling you new ps3.
For those asking when to insert usb flash drive, I did it on second time of pressing start + select, and it worked great.
You will then be prompted to install the failing update via USB storage device by pressing Start & Select at exactly the same time on your controller. DO NOT Insert your USB storage device at this point but still press Start & Select on your controller, another message will then appear saying ‘No Update Could Be Found’.
Gently push your hard drive back into the PS3, press X on your controller (enter USB now) and repeat the update process by pressing Start & Select on your controller again.

Step 4. under 'IMPORTANT' section highlighted in RED has been UPDATED THIS IS THE QUICKEST & BEST METHOD - NO HARD DRIVE EXCHANGE REQUIRED Tools required:A Laptop or PCUSB Storage DeviceSet of Precision ScrewdriversStopwatch (explain later) Download the v4.50 update from Playstation website onto your laptop or PC.
Insert a USB storage device into your computer and navigate into this and create a new folder named PS3 now double-click into this folder, then create another new folder called UPDATE, (*Note the folder names must be in CAPITAL letters) now navigate to the v4.50 update file calledPS3UPDAT.PUP on your computer, right-click on it then copy & paste into the UPDATE folder (so technically you have the PS3 update file inside the UPDATE folder and this UPDATE folder inside the PS3 folder).
At the left-hand side of your console is a small panel that pops open to reveal a small blue screw which holds the hard drive in place (this is for the FAT version of the PS3, you will have to search the Internet to find where hard-drive is located on other versions) just below blue screw is a small metal pull out tab which forms part of the casing that holds the hard drive secure. (DO NOT PULL THIS OUT….YET).
Turn ON your console, as soon as the failing update screen appears gently pull the metal TAB to remove your hard drive from your PS3. Wait around 30 seconds to a minute and you are prompted with an error message and a 60-second restart timer which is counting down. Let this timer count right down to 0 and allow your PS3 to restart.
Turn your PS3 OFF and push your hard drive back into console. This was the tedious bit for me (getting the timing right) but hopefully the following info will make it easy for you.
IMPORTANT: Turning your PS3 back ON and starting your stopwatch at exactly the same time is the vital step to this process (I used the stopwatch on my i-Phone).
When the stopwatch reaches anywhere between 4.5 and 5 seconds….. quickly (but gently) pull the metal TAB to remove your hard drive from the PS3.
After approximately 10-20 seconds a screen prompts you to connect your controller to the PS3 via your USB cable and to press the PS button. NOTE: You will only get this prompt by gently (but quickly) removing the hard drive at precisely the right time otherwise your PS3 will continue to try and update via the corrupted 4.50 version and if you are seeing the update attempting to re-install or seeing blank, blue, or ‘No Signal’ screens or any other message for that matter you will have to start  from beginning of section 5 again until the connect your controller prompt appears.
You will then be prompted to install the failing update via USB storage device by pressing Start & Select at exactly the same time on your controller. DO NOT Insert your USB storage device at this point but still press Start & Select on your controller, another message will then appear saying ‘No Update Could Be Found’.
Gently push your hard drive back into the PS3, and it is at this point that you insert your USB device that contains the v4.50 update and repeat the update process by pressing Start & Select on your controller.
    6. The update is found and installed, the PS3 restarts and everything is back to normal, everything is intact, no data loss and more importantly no long tedious phone calls to Sony support and they cannot charge a penny trying to sell you a replacement PS3 console! Happy Days!!!!!Sevan68
