System Uses 80-90% of cpu on Original Macbook air

I am looking for a solution that reduces the system from using 80% of my cpu. I am getting frustrated

If you are using Mac OS X Lion then I'd suggest to downgrade to Snow Leopard.
Lion is more resource hungry than Snow Leopard, this makes the CPU heat up more.
If the CPU heats up the computer throtles it down to a lower speed for it to cool down. When this happens you'll see your CPU usage go up too, to keep it as simple as I can: imagine you are using 50% capacity at 1.86ghz and the computer throtles down to 0.93ghz, with half the processing speed the laptop would need double the usage to run the same app at the same speed, so it would use 100%. It can even go over 100% if you push it enough.
Sometimes the system will report that it's using 80 or 90% to prevent other apps from stressing the processor and heating it up even further or it will even shut down one of it's cores, a common issue on early 2008 models.
I have a 2009 2.13ghz Macbook Air and after having some performance issues with Lion I reinstalled Snow Leopard, my mac runs much cooler with it and my battery life is one hour longer since it's less stressful on the processor and memory.
You should also google around Coolbook for Snow Leopard, it brings the temperature down and therefore the laptop can run more time at full tilt before it slows the processor down, meaning better performance.
Just my two cents.

Keep in mind you can also use the optical drive of another computer to upgrade OS X. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2129 has information on how to do that. This works on a Windows PC as well as a Mac.

  • Problem to install Windows using Boot Camp 3.0.4 in Macbook Air (2008)

    Hi Folks!
    Please I need help.
I have a original Macbook Air of 2008 (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP8?viewlocale=pt_BR) with the Mac OS Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I want to install the Windows 7 Professional x64 as a secondary partition using the BootCamp 3.0.4. After steps necessary for create a new partition with the BootCamp, I rebooted the machine with the "Windows 7 Professional installation DVD" in DVD device, but then the setup Windows installation does not appears, showing the initialization white screen of the Mac OS with the apple image, a symbol of emptiness and a folder with a "?" symbol within alternating infinitely and do not finish.
I tried with the Windows Ultimate Vista x86, but occurs the same.
Please, what can I do to install the Windows in my Macbook Air?
    Thanks a lot!
    Regards,
    Jonas Presse

No, I did not get a solve. Actually, my problem worsened. I tried it again, but this time the computer wouldn´t detect my alu keyboard, hence I couldn´t select a drive to tell the bloody thing where to boot from. That is weird, because at the time I opened this thread it did work. I actually had to borrow a wired keyboard so I could hit alt and get it to work.
At the moment I am not so keen on trying it again......

Hi I bought 2TB WD my passport for mac but I do not know what I can delete from the original macbook air. Thank you.

That depends on what you have on the MBA...if you have videos, move the videos to the external drive.  If you have a lot of music, create a folder/library for the music and point iTunes there for the music.  If you have a lot of photos for iPhoto, make a new library on the external drive and move our photos over there and then select that library as the default library for iPhoto to use.
Those are the big files and should take a lot of the load off the internal storage.

  • I have Works and Pages installed in my iMAC? I am wondering if I can use the same license installed in my MacBook Air?

    Hi there,
I have Works and Pages installed in my iMAC? I am wondering if I can use the same license installed in my MacBook Air. Appreciate your help.

    HI Pam,
You've posted this question in the AppleWorks community, meant for discussion of issues and techniques involving Apple's now discontinued productivity application, AppleWorks.
The answer to your Pages question depends on how, and with which licence, you purchased iWork or Pages.
    If you:
-Downloaded the thirty day trial of iWork, then purchased a registration number to activate it,
    OR
-purchased and installed iWork from the boxed DVD retail package,
then you purchased either a one user, one machine licence, and will need to either remove the iWork applications from your iMac when you install the package on the Air, or purchase a new copy of the individual applications you want and install them on the air.
    OR
you purchased a Family Licence, which permits you to install and use iWork on up to five computers owned by members of the same family, living under the same roof.
If you downloaded Pages (with or without the other iWork applications), then your licence permits you to download and install the application(s) on any compatible device attached to the same Mac app store ID as was the Mac on which it was originally installed.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Can't use Launchpad on 10.9.5 on Macbook Air

Can't use Launchpad on 10.9.5 on Macbook Air
The Launchpad can be launched, but when I try to swipe either way, it just moves the icon panel from one side to the other but doesn't move to the next or previous page. I observed this on Macbook Air. Mac Mini seems not affected. Both system run exact copy of the system configuration and applications.
I do have a couple of 100's apps installed but I didn't see it as a problem since the Mac Mini works.

    Hey jamesondavy,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to update the OS. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
About the OS X Mavericks v10.9.5 Update
Use Software Update to check for the latest Apple software using the Mac App Store, including this update.
Other software updates available for your computer may appear, which you should install. Note that an update's size may vary from computer to computer when installed using Software Update. Also, some updates must be installed prior to others.
You can also download the manual update installer. This is a useful option when you need to update multiple computers, but only want to download the update once. Standalone installers are available from Apple Support Downloads.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,

  • HT201700 Voltage input range for original Macbook air 2008/2009

My charger (A1244 | 45w) no longer works. And I need to buy a new charger. Since this is for an old 2008 macbook air, the smart thing to do is buy a charger that will work with new models (that require 85w).
Apple doesn't make this power tolerance specification easily available online. This page is helpful, but doesn't provide the tolerance specification....

    Question:
I want to make sure that the (minimum) voltage input range for my original macbook air is between 14V and 18.5V.
Does anyone have a definitive answer for this?

"the smart thing to do is buy a charger that will work with new models (that require 85w)."
No, the smart thing is to buy the proper replacement for the power adapter.  Since the power adapter connector has changed, you'll also need to purchase an adapter for the MagSafe connector.

  • How can I use migration assistant to load my new Macbook Air?

How do I use migration assistant to load my new Macbook Air?  Can this be done only wirelessly?

No, you can transfer from a Mac wirelessly, wired ethernet, Thunderbolt or Firewire. Your older Mac must have the same connection, but you can use adaptors if necessary. For example, you can use an Ethernet cable with an Ethernet-Thunderbolt adaptor if your older Mac has an ethernet port.
Wireless tends to be pretty slow (can take many hours) so it's recommended to choose a wired connection whenever you can.

I received an email containing a spreadsheet created using Mac Office 2004 on my new MacBook Air equipped with Mac Office 2011.  When I saved the document, my Finder lists the document without the .xls file extension. Why?
All other .xls documents created by Mac Office 2004 retained the .xls file extention when I migrated them over to the new MacBook Air.

I know what happened.  When I saved the document I somehow hit the Hide File Extension box.  Sorry to trouble this group. I simply resaved it w/o activating the Hide File Extension feature.

  • How can i use a second external webcam on my MacBook Air 11

How can I use a second external webcam with my MacBook Air 11" 2011?
    Are there specific compatible webcams?
Can both cams be use at same time?
How would I choose which cam would be the active one, for example with FaceTime or Skype?
    Thanks for any tips.

paolo@spring wrote: How can I use a second external webcam with my MacBook Air 11" 2011?...
Plug it in and launch the app you will use to run it.
paolo@spring wrote: ...Are there specific compatible webcams?...
Yes.  In general, any current USB model (will meet the "UVC" standard) can work on any Mac running Mac OS X 10.4.8 or newer.
    More specifically:
    (1) You have a choice of many Mac-compatible USB cam.  Some examples of current compatible cams are described at  http://www.mac-compatible-web-cam.com/.
    (2) If you want a wireless cam, consider http://ecamm.com/mac/webcam/bt1/
    (3) OS X already has everything it needs for Mac-compatible cams.  I recommend that you not add any OS X software that comes with your chosen camera to your OS X Mac, at least until you have tested your new cam without adding anything.
paolo@spring wrote:... Can both cams be use at same time?...
Multiple cameras can be connected at one time, but asking your Mac to actually use (capture and process) more than one video stream at a time might cause processor and data bus capacity problems.  The normal method is to connect your cameras and switch between them as needed, actually using only one at a time.
paolo@spring wrote:... How would I choose which cam would be the active one, for example with FaceTime or Skype?...
The software you use to operate the cameras controls that.  For more info, start with the answer in this topic link.
