System very slow, rainbow beach ball, etc...?

My system is running very slow, I have the dreaded rainbow beach ball spinning gear. I recently shut down my computer w/out using the mouse. I have also held the power on/off switch longer then usual, and may have started a firmware update, but have no idea how to confirm this. I have performed  verify disk permissions, and repair permissions tasks. I will reboot in safe mode next. I was also getting the grey progress bar at startup. Any procedural help would be grateful.

ONE POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
I've recently had the beach ball appearing every 30 seconds or so and then the Mac totally freezes.
After trying all the suggestions online, the solution that fixed my problem was to reset the SMU. It basically forces the fan to maximum power and cools your mac down. The problems I had were being caused by an overheating Mac, even though it looked like a system software issue!
The reset the SMU:
Shut your Mac down.
Unplug the power cable from the back of the mac and any other devices (keyboard, etc).
Leave the mac for at least 10 seconds.
Hold down the power button on the back of the mac.
Keep holding down the power button and re-attach the power cable.
Once the power cable is in place, release the power button.
Now press the power button again to start-up your mac. (You can plug your devices back in now).
You should now hear the fan at maximum levels (it's very noisy!).
If you have the same problem that I had, your mac should start to cool and your mac should start operating preperly again (it may take a few minutes).
If this works, you'll then need to download FAN CONTROL FOR MAC.
It's a control panel that better regulates the temperature of your mac than the standard settings.

mac is running very slow rainbow wheel is popping up all the time

This happened to my iMac a few months ago. Back-up your data then RUN, don't walk to your local Apple repair store, your internal hard drive is failing. They were not able to retrieve any data from the original hard drive; the fix was a new hard drive. I was told the hard drives are made to last 2-5 years. Mine was about 3 years. Good luck!

  • Spinning Rainbow Beach Ball

I'm working in microsoft word and the spinning rainbow beach ball has been come up for the last 15-20 minutes.  How do I get rid of the ball and still save my unsaved work?

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • ITunes 8 - Loads Slow and Beach Balls

Ever since I started using iTunes 8 it loads real slow and beach balls as I go through my cover art. Anyone else have this issue?? I never had this problem with any other iTunes versions before.
Sidenote: The Genius is turn off.
    Thanks.

    Hi J|Spoon,
Try deleting the iTunes preference file. Quit iTunes. Locate this file: com.apple.iTunes.plist
It's here: /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to your Desktop. Relaunch iTunes and see if you can access your cover art without iTunes freezing up. If that is the case, then drag that .plist file to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. Preference files can become corrupted over time. Your Mac will create a new pref file for you.

  • 10.4.7 Runs Slow, Spinning Beach Ball, "kass" takes over system

To the helpful frequenters of this forum:
Since installing Tiger and updating to 10.4.7 recently, I have experienced some major system slow downs on my computer. I am running a Titanium Powerbook G4 with 512MB RAM and 12GB free (from a 60GB hard drive).
My problems seem to center on Mail 2 app, which runs very slowly when accessing the IMAP server (a problem I never experienced with Mail 1 in the days of Panther). However, it extends to other applications: when launching iTunes and Safari, I often get a spinning beach ball and a 10-20 second hang that I never had before. Sometimes closing programs can take a long time. Force quit often does not respond, but for some reason pressing my laptop power key (as if to turn off the computer) helps to get things jump-started.
In my Activity Monitor, there is a Process called "kass" that is eating up anywhere from 20-30% of my processor. I think that this is connected to some sort of Key Access software that might have been installed on my computer for my college access, but I am not sure. Here are the details from Activity Monitor:

What I don't understand is why this is flaring up now, since the Key Access has always been there (on OS 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3 as I upgraded sequentially). Perhaps there is some sort of bad interaction with the 10.4.7 upgrade? I'm not really sure, but I was wondering how I would go about eliminating this hang up. It might be the source of so much slowing down on my computer!
    Thank you very much,
    Matthew

    Thanks for your help, everyone.
I seem to have solved the problem. The "kass" function was linked to KeyAccess, an app made by Sassafrass. This app was installed on my computer by my University so that I could use certain programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) while on the school network by obtaining a key through the school Internet connection. For some reason this process started to take over my computer once I upgraded to 10.4.7, so I just removed the application from my computer all together. Now the hang-ups in other programs, as well as the IMAP email seem to be back to their old speediness.
    Strange how these things work.

  • Yosemite slow, spinning beach ball at every action

    Description du problème :
Yosemite worked well for a month or more, until yesterday. I used for the first time a flight simulator downloaded from appstore (for 30 minutes), i don't even know why i did that. After that mbp was really hot. At next start mbp was very slow showing spinningball beach ball at every action (typing, opening folders). I deleted the app, but no improvement was shown. after that i noted there was 10.10.2 upgrade (i had 10.10.1). no improvement. I thought i had to clean a little bit so i downloaded adwaremedic, which found an adware and eliminated it. still no improvement. I finally looked up on support.apple and found plenty of people with this problem and followed intructions: deleted all third party and cleaning programs (fan control and flip4mac wont disappear from system preferences, how to be sure if i uninstalled them right?). anyway still no improvement.
I followed thisguide (Guide: How to solve Yosemite memory leaks and CPU usage) but i'm not sure if i managed to reset smc, as my left **** key doesn't work (i used the right one). still no improvement.
I was thinking about using clamxav (I've read it's the less invasive) to scan the mbp, is it a good idea or not?
might dropbox be a problem (after quitting it, if i try to delete it, it says it's not possible because plugins are in use!)
should i reinstall yosemite? if yes, is it necessary to do a backup?
    Please help me. thank you

When you see the beachball, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Brutally slow, spinning beach ball all the time

In the last few months my Intel iMac has slowed to a crawl, making it virtually unusable. The simplest task (opening a new window, dragging a folder, scrolling up or down in Safari) results in the spinning beach ball, often for minutes on end.
I have used Disk Utility to repair permissions, dragged the Fonts and Preferences files from my user Library to the desktop and restarted, and done an Archive and Install, with no improvement. I have 4GB of RAM and at least 10GB of free disk space. Activity Monitor doesn't snow any obvious problems, but often showed the balky programs in red with a "(not responding)" next to each.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated, as I have now resorted to using my wife's laptop as my computer is essentially useless.

With 4GB you should not be paging to disk, but it would not hurt to monitor pageout information. You can do this with *Activity Monitor*, top via Terminal, or if you have installed Xcode, the *vm_stat 60* command from a Terminal session.
What you are looking for is very high pageout activity. But again, with 4GB of memory that should not be an issue, unless you like to run some really memory intensive programs.
After I upgraded to Leopard, I had some slowness that I did not understand. It turned out that when running Tiger, I had a licensed copy of *Little Snitch* installed. However, I did not upgrade Little Snitch to a Leopard compatible version, when I installed Leopard. My problem turned out to be that I had NOT uninstalled the Tiger version of Little Snitch, and as a result its Tiger compatible bits were causing me slow downs when running Leopard.
I actually put up with this for awhile, until I decide to do some house cleaning on System PrefPanes I was no longer really using. That is when I accidentially discovered that my performance came back after getting rid of the Tiger version of Little Snitch.
That was my experience. And I did not really get Beachballs, but I did notice the slowness.
I am suggesting that maybe you have something installed on your system that is not on your Wife's system which is affecting your performance.

  • Safari constantly rainbow beach ball all the time... help!

I am running everything all up to date on my Macbookpro, and always my safari is doing the rainbow disk, or beach ball, whenever I open it, close it, open a new tab, open a new window, switch between tabs... you get my point right?
How do I solve this issue?

    Hi,
Check for third party Safari add-ons. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Reset Safari. From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons. Click Reset. Relaunch Safari.
Open a Finder window select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder. Move the cache.db file to the Trash. Relaunch Safari. If you still have problems ...
Check for Login Items Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps you have listed there. And go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash.
Troubleshoot the Safari .plist file. Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Now launch Safari. If Safari functions as it should, move the .plist file to the Trash.
If nothing above has helped, login to another user account on your Mac. Try Safari there.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro slow? Beach ball

Boy, I was looking at a discussion of this from TODAY, about a half hour ago, and now can't find it.
"Why is my MacBook Pro slow?" brings "screen tearing issue" and other things not related to my problem.
I got and ran Easyfind, and got rid of MacKeeper.
What else do I need to do?
I have the beach ball way too often.
I just made an iMovie, but optimizing it for YouTube is impossible.  Boxes keep getting grayed out; complete hangup.
    Can easyfind help further?
    Thank you.

    Hi Tomo 2,
Kim Komando said get Sophos, so I did.  I see it found something called Bredo-K on Nov. 22.
It's now scanning my OVER 5 MILLION FILES.  Seriously, I don't think I need that many.
Right now about 50% of CPU idle,
    about 1.03 GB Ram free.
Sophos is using about 90% of whatever.
This scanning could take all weekend.  I need to get rid of some stuff.  Hard to know what, though.
    Thanks for any more ideas.
    Jerry

  • Itunes in external HD slow with beach ball on only certain songs

My itunes folder has always been in an external folder and ran smooth and quick when I would choose any random song. I have about 1500 songs yet only some songs will load with a 5 second delay and rolling beach ball. Is it the newer 8.2 version of itunes, is it the HD? Help.

I've just had exactly the same problem and it coincided with me moving my music folder to a new external hard drive (it was previously on another smaller drive and also upgrading from Panther (10.3.9) to Tiger (10.4.9). I don't think it's a drive problem and name length issue as during the 4 hours last night I was trying to sort this out by moving around folders, consolidating etc etc the actual albums that were getting lost were changing! At one point I transferred all of my music back to the internal drive (to rule out the external drive issue) and using the same library, pointed at the new folder and it all seemed to work OK. However, after a bit more fiddling I started to lose links to albums from there as well. I then looked at the iTunes Music Library.xml file and it seemed that those that were missing had paths to the other external drive still. No matter what I did, I could not get it to rebuild the library with all music in the same location. In the end I trashed the library and dragged all of the music back into iTunes again, which seems to be working OK at the moment - but all of my music is now on the internal drive taking up space whereas I really want it on the external drive again. In the process I have obviously lost all my playlists (why can't I just drag them back from my iPod as they're all on there, but I can't seem to be able to copy them back into iTunes which is a pain?).
I'm still going to try to get to music back onto the hard drive when I get some more time and have noticed in another thread that some people actually have the library on their exetral drive as well, whereas mine has always been in the iTunes folder on the internal drive. How to I move it to the external drive as well - just pick up and drop? Would this help?
I notice that everyone with this problem has OS 10.4.9 - is this just a coincidence? Did your problems coincide with the update as well?

Please someone help me!

    Hi Jordan,
Sorry to hear you're having problems. One rule of computer ownership I like to encourage to my users that I support.... Don't ever delete/move/rename a file or folder that you're not absolute certain the purpose and function of on your computer.
Sounds like whatever you deleted caused some havoc. Without having been there to see it, it's difficult to guess, so I won't bother to waste anyone's time.
Have a backup? If not, you can start first by backing up any important personal data you've loaded onto the machine. I'd then proceed with reinstalling the operating system and any of the 3rd party programs you've installed which are not working correctly, like Office and iWork.
The Apple Store may assist you with reinstalling the operating system onto your computer, but their primary support is hardware and software troubleshooting / advice. I know stores use to perform OS installations and such at the Genius Bar, but I'm under the impression that they don't typically do that much anymore. It's worth a visit, if you get stumped on doing the actions yourself, however.

  • System very slow..keeps hanging up in Firefox

My system is very slow and keeps hanging up in Firefox...I can type half  a sentence, wait 30-45 seconds..continue.
    Thoughts?

What is the exact model MBP that you have and what is the installed OSX?
Have you tried another browser such as Safari or Opera?  There may be other reasons for the problem.
    Ciao.

  • Fan going crazy every time we run anything  - system very slow. Connected?

System has slowed down dramatically of late. Now fan is going crazy. Are they connected? Any way to speed things up ?

You should be comparing it to the size of your hard drive. Look in About this Mac>more info>serial ATA which will give you the drive size. If it's the original, it probably is 160GB, so you have more than enough space.
Have you emptied the caches and reset the SMU? And vacuumed the air vents?
You have amazingly little memory. I would add at least 1GB, which you can find at [macsales.com] or [smalldog.com] or [newegg, com]. Make sure that whatever you buy has a lifetime guarantee. I suspect once you add more memory, your troubles will be over.
