System-wide kb shortcut for mail functions

I'd like to be able to program a system-wide, universal kb shortcut to:
-- start a new, blank mail message
-- check for new mail (in other words, poll my mail server) without bringing mail to the front
ideas? I've been using Butler now for a while and I like it, but it seems limited in its ability to handle something like what I want to do. an automator script could work but I don't know how to assign a script to a system-wide kb shortcut.
thanks!

QuicKeys will let you do pretty well anything.

  • System wide Keyboard shortcuts in Full Screen Apps

As a new ibook user I am trying to figure out how to make the best use of my system, and have run into a problem:
When running full screen applicationsn (like games), system wide keyboard shortcuts don't seem to behave as expected: they simply don't work. Specifically I cannot use the keyboard shortcuts for Expose or Desktop Manager when in any full screen application.
In fact, it doesn't even seem possible to leave a full screen application running and get back to my desktop. In windows I could alt-tab to another application and it would hide the full screen application minimized in the taskbar, but command-tab simply doesn't work in OSX when in a full screen app.
Is there any way to make all or particular system wide keyboard shortcuts work while running full screen applications? With the terminal or something? I'm just lost. Thanks for helping a mac newbie.
    ibook G4 1.33 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Thanks Tim, you're a genius. That gave me the clue.
The new user 'test' does not have the F5 behaviour problem.
Therefore I checked through my list of login items, and found that it was 'Contactizer Pro' that used F5 to add a Quick Task.
Changing that default stopped the problem.
(The reason this is an issue is that I have a new Kensington Wireless Presenter, and it appears that pushing the laser pointer button also sends an F5 keystroke (for some reason)- which would stop my Keynote presentation and open the 'Quick Task' window!)

  • Keyboard Shortcuts for Mail won't stick

Hi. I've created a keyboard shortcut for Mail--Command-K to Get All New Mail--and changed the conflicting command (Command-K normally will Erase Deleted Messages in All Accounts). It worked well when I set it up, but only once. As soon as I quit out, my Keyboard Shortcut for Get All New Mail disappeared. Meanwhile, my new keyboard shortcut for Erase Deleted Messages in All Accounts still works.
And there's more: if I reset the "Command-K to Get All New Mail" shortcut, it will work only until I quit. And that's the case with no matter what shortcut I set up for "Get All New Mail." What gives? Any suggestions?

I'm surprised there hasn't been a reply to this, since this discussion board is one of the best around. Is there a more appropriate board in this forum for me to you post this?
    Thx!

  • System Wide Keyboard shortcuts

F5 on my macbook (in any application) opens a 'Quick Task Entry' window.
( I am not sure where this behaviour comes from but I suspect it was from one of any number of apps I have tried out over the years).
I would like F5 to do nothing.
In the System Preferences>Keyboard & Mouse>Keyboard Shortcuts, there is no 'mention' of F5 and this action. Other applications (like Things) also create System Wide shortcuts that do not show up in this window.
How can I change this F5 behaviour?
    Thanks.

  • Shortcut for Mail Sending Account suddenly doesn't work!

A year ago or so I created shortcuts so I easily could switch what account the current mail was sent from.
If you aren't aware of this it's made from the System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts. As described here:http://articles.directorym.com/Set_Mails_sending_account_via_keyboard_shortcut-a 962070.html
This worked without hesitation after installing Lion a month ago.
Tonight, I changed one of the my emails, and hence I needed to change the shortcut. Eg: from Steve Jobs <[email protected]> to Steve Jobs <[email protected]>
After this change none of them work! Before, I could see the shortcuts in the account menu, but now I see nothing. And I haven't change anything else!!
I have restarted, and tried fifty other things with no success. I use these commands extremely often since I mail from a lot of different companies. Now it's a real pita to change the sending account.
The question is probably this: How do I setup shortcuts for the sending accounts in Lion?
    Please help!
Edit: I just noticed that when edit the shortcut in System Preferences it automatically adds an ">" in front of the shortcut name! Someone else that notice this?

I solved it by removing the name and just using the email address in the shortcut.
But I think this is solved in 10.8 though.

  • Where can I get a system wide Visual EQ for my Macbook pro?

Hey guys, I use logic pro X a lot! I love the channel EQ plugin and when I listen to music or watch a movie I wish I had the Channel EQ. Is there a way to either use that plugin system wide or is there a place i can download something close to that? I used soundflower for a while but I really want a visual EQ for those weird extreme highs from movies or bad recordings.

Apple would be the main supplier of any replacement parts.

  • Urgent Assistance Needed:  All Documents deleted after setting system-wide viewing preferences for Finder

I got myself into some trouble...
Following the guide here to force a default Folder view to sub folders:  http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/10488/system-wide-finder-view-preferenc es
    Which is:
    There is a simpler way.
In the Terminal, navigate to your $HOME directory: cd ~
    Remove all the .DS_Store files:find ~ -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm -f {} \;
Relaunch finder going to: Force Quit → Finder
Set your global preferences using ⌘J and press the Use as default button.
Now, every folder you open or create will have the new settings.
I now have the existing Folder structure in tact for Documents, but every single file is gone (in my entire Documents directory).
    Naturally I'm thinking two things:
    1)  Oh no.  I knew better than to go down this path without knowing exactly what I was doing.
    2)  How do I "get my files back..."
I'm not sure if they're just not viewable or if they were deleted.  Essentially everything I've configured on the machine (From Apple login to mouse scroll reversal) has been undone.  I don't have TimeMachine set up yet - I brought two remote hard drives to work today to get it done but they're both NTFS so I couldn't progress.
I'm reasonably technical but new to Mac.
Advice is greatly appreciated... I'm GREATLY distressed at the moment...
    <Edited by Host>

Ok so "DS_Store files are used by Mac OS X to store folder specific metadata information."  Supposedly they get recreated... except I didn't get a nice smooth transition of newly created invisible, instead every file on my machine is "gone."

  • Keyboard Shortcuts for Mail Message

I switched to Mail from MozillaThunderbird. In Thunderbird, one can move through OPEN mail messages via Keyboard Shortcut; a simple "F" for next message or "B" for previous message. In Mail, the only thing I've figured out is that one can arrow through one's LIST of messages, then use "Return" to open only the selected e-mail. From there, I must return to the list again (Cmmd+W)to open the next or previous message. This seems cumbersome an un-Maclike. Is there any way, from an already open message, to move to the next or previous message via Keyboard Shortcut? thanks

No. Mail lacks this functionality. The closer you can get is to have the preview pane visible below the message list and move from one message to another using the arrow keys.

  • Are there Keyboard shortcuts for Mail? How to quickly move items?

I just came from Entourage, which I was happy to leave. However I have a ton of folders where I organize my emails after I read them in my inbox. I really miss the "Move" button in the Entourage toolbar, which allowed me to start typing the name of folder I wanted to move an email to.
With Mail I have to go and find the destination folder, which is sometimes 5 levels deeps. Yikes! It does seem quicker to do it in the Message menu, but still it's clumsy.
Any tips? Any keystrokes? New to Mail and loving it!
    Jon

You can bypass the Message menu and Control-click on a message or group of messages, then select the Move To item from the contextual menu and select the folder from there.

  • CS4-How to create a shortcut for media browser icon clean up function?

    Hi again.
I recently upgraded my system, now running CS4 suite in Window 7 - 64bits. This to be able to manage AVCHD files within premiere.
I'm just starting to work with it and I'm missing the ability to create a shortcut for this function I had in PP2 cs2. I did go to the recommended reading before posing my question. There the most appropriate area I could find was about Bins Behaviours, at least I thought it was, and there was nothing in it.
I have gone to Edit / keyboard  customization then each of the 3 choices, application, panels and tools. but could not see "Clean Up"
I hope someone has an answer for me as I like to use this panel as a story board and use this function often and thank those who will try to help me.
(I'm pleased that my avchd files are now coming nicely on the timeline!)_

  • Keyboard shortcut for Compare Documents (or configurable keyboard shortcuts)

    Hi,
I'm guessing the ability to configure Keyboard Shortcuts as one can in other Adobe applications is coming soon to Acrobat (the software release cycles haven't quite synched up yet), but if there are no plans for this, I would appreciate a Keyboard Shortcut for a function I use very frequently: Compare Documents.
    Thanks much,
    Adam

If you go to system prefs - keyboard & mouse - keyboard shortcuts you can set a shortcut for anything that is in the mail menus.
click the + at bottom left to add one, select mail from the applications drop down, then type in the exact name of the mail menu item you want a shortcut for eg :Add Hyperlink . Then find a shortcut combo that isn't in use by something else & there you are.
I prefer the edit link, so's you get a neat link, rather than the (sometimes) 3 line url.

we've noticed that mail doesn't send rtf that outlook on an exchange server likes
unless you not only enable rtf, but also actually make some alteration that really requires rtf. That's to say a different font,a larger font, italics, a signature in italics, a colour etc.
The fact that your composed message displays in arial 48pt (for example) doesn't cut it - it'll still be sent as plain unless you do one of the above. Making a change & reversing it works too.

  • System Wide RTSI Trigger - Multiple Instruments

    Hello,
The application design requires a group of VIs whose job is to select a test point, look up what device and channel it is connected to, and then assign it as a trigger on the RTSI bus. The four instruments will then use this RTSI channel as a system wide trigger.
For example, can a VI assign Channel 3 on Device 1 as a trigger on RTSI Channel 0; then a completely separate VI that contains the driver for Device 1 (and is responsible for data acquisition) utilizes RTSI 0 as it's trigger (the same trigger that it is supplying)? There are four instruments, and the trigger can be selected from any channel on any of these instruments.
Or, does the trigger have to be set at the time of acquisition, t
    herefore, amidst initializing the driver?
    Thanks for your help!
    Mark Roberto
    MD Robotics

    Mark,
Here is how you can setup were to look for triggers. When we set a DAQ board to trigger we use Trigger Config VI which can be found in the advanced pallettes for Analog Input, Analog Output, and Digital I/O.
When we want to route the trigger setup in Trigger Config to the RTSI bus to make the signal available to other DAQ boards then we use Route Signal for E-series and Analog output boards or RTSI Connect for 653x boards.
Regarding he question about assigning channel 3 on Device 1 as a trigger on the RTSI channel, this is not directly possible.
The RTSI bus only takes digital signals and therefore you can not route an Analog signal on channel 3 to the RTSI bus. However you can setup Device 1 to trigger off an analog trigger (if the DAQ board supports Anal
og Triggering) and then pass the digital trigger that is set over the RTSI bus.
When you set up analog triggering you can only specify the first channel in your channel string as the analog trigger source. In this case you can not monitor 4 channels and trigger when either of the 4 channels reach a trigger condition. You can only monitor one channel for the trigger condition.

  • Keyboard shortcut for Control+F2, F, Enter

    Hello,
I am trying to create a keyboard shortcut that would be available to all Applications deliveres the same result as these keystrokes:
    1. Control + F2 (move focus to menu bar)
    2. F (moves focus to the File menu bar menu)
    3. Enter or down arrow (Displays the File menu)
WHat I am looking to do is create the Windows equivalent of alt+F (displays the contents of the File menu)
I have created a System Preferences Keyboard Shortcut for All Applications that has "File" as the description and ^F has the Shortcut...this doesn't work. Is there a way to assign a shortcut to display the menu bar File menu in its open state?

    ReidRik_Von
    Here's one approach to try...
    1) Open System Preferences > Universal Access and make sure "Enable access for assistive devices" is checked.
    2) Highlight and copy the block of code below and paste it into your AppleScript Script Editor (located inside your Applications > AppleScript folder):
    *tell application "System Events"*
    *keystroke tab using command down*
*set theApp to name of (first process whose frontmost is true)*
    *tell process theApp*
*click menu bar item "File" of menu bar 1*
    *end tell*
    *end tell*
Choose Save As from the Script Editor's File menu, File Format: application, leaving the Options unchecked. Give the script application a name (Display File Menu, e.g.), and press Save.
    3) To assign a keyboard shortcut, you might consider downloading and installing the excellent Spark program.
From Spark's File menu, set up a New Hot Key to launch an Application, in this case the application being your newly created AppleScript application. When the new System HotKey sheet drops down, hit the Choose button and navigate to the location where your new AppleScript application was saved. Select it and press Open. Click inside the editable Shortcut field to make it active, and on your keyboard keystroke Option (alt), plus the letter "f." Then press Create.
Start the Spark Daemon by selecting it from the File menu, or by pressing the Stark Spark Daemon button on the Spark panel itself, and then quit Spark altogether. The Spark Daemon and your enabled keyboard shortcut will run as a hidden process, using a minimal amount of RAM.
    It worked for me...
    Good luck!
