System-wide Spell Checker Error

I newly installed Leopard on a MacBook Pro, and now in Mail, Safari and iTunes, I get a "Couldn't contact Spell Checker" error message when I try to type in these programs. The problem disappears in Mail if I set Spell Check to never in the preferences. Safari & iTunes don't have that option, that I could see.
But that's besides the point. Spell check should be seamless and automatic. The error doesn't just occur once. It basically hangs the program because the error cycles continuously and I have to force-quit to get out of the application.
So now I am using Firefox to type this because Safari wouldn't let me type without letting me know it can't contact spell checker.
To remedy the situation, I've verified and repaired permissions, although I did not see any permissions that related to this issue. I downloaded and re-installed the 10.5.1 update. No effect. I've spotlighted 'spell checker' and only gotten the .dll file from Windows as a return.
Guesses, anyone?

etresoft, thanks for the hint. I looked and found tons of stuff, but not a thing to do with the spell checker error. I did log into another profile on the affected machine and had no trouble whatsoever. Does that mean the problem is in my home/library? I think, hopefully logically, that there's another program causing this issue. What would be the logical way to approach this?

  • Change system wide spelling checker ???

    evidently OS X has a system wide spelling checker
    I have set my region correctly but see no place to adjust the spelling checker.
    It is by default to American English and I want to change it to British or Australian/New Zealand English what ever options are available. Or do we all have to spell American?

    Hello
    Open System Preferences, International. Click on the Languages tab.
    Select Australian or British English, or what you prefer, so that it appears in the list. The choices are found on the lower right hand side : Order for sorted lists.
    Make sure your selected choice is at the top of the list.
    Note the caveat:
    +Changes take effect in the Finder the next time you log in.... and in Applications the next time you open them.+
    Open a new TextEdit document and you will see the change reflected in the spelling checking.

  • Auto check spell check error

    I have a bad habit of typing THE as TEH, usually the auto spell check pick this up. Recently the auto spell check doesn't pick up the TEH spelling mistakes. This applies to all text programs, none of them detect this specific spelling error.
    Any ideas how to reset the Auto Spell checker would be of great help.
    Sincerely,
    Steven

    Thank you for your kind reply. No I am the only user of this system.
    Auto correct spelling works in this forum, but there are no suggestions when right clicking on a misspelt word. The key issue seems to be worse with Facebook. I switched on spelling like you suggested previously, but recently it doesn't work even though the settings when I right click show that it is on.
    I have also had issues with Safari as I did a trial of MacKeeper and this has caused some sites not to load in Safari - the only way around that was to use a proxy server.
    Thank you for all your great help

  • Spell Check error

    I have been having a problem with e-mail -- that has since migrated to Safari as well. When sending a message or trying to enter a password and using a special character or carriage return I get an "Alert" that the "Spell Checker" can't be found (approx.) and the system essentially locks up.
    A search of the discussion groups attributed this to "Spell Catcher" and had a number of solutions that involved reinstalling the system.
    I used Spring Cleaning 10.0 to uninstall Spell Catcher and all linked files (extensions, etc.) and the problem appears to have been resolved.
    This is a much simpler solution.
    I am entering this here because the original discussion has been closed and no further posts were allowed over there.

    I am posting this as a service to others who may run into the same problem.

  • GW8 Spell checker error

    A user is getting the error 'Cannot load spell checker resource module' when spell checking an email before sending it. We have uninstalled, ran cleaner, reinstalled GW but it is still giving the error. We are running GW8 SP2. It has been working for over an year and this suddenly happened. I ran an utility I was pointed to at www.dependencywalker.com. I have the results if needed. What can I do to fix this??

    Hi,
    Hate to say it, but.... user profile corruption somewhere. I suggest recreating the user profile. If it doesn't follow the user it is PC related.
    Let us know how it goes.

  • Spell checker error: null cannot be parsed to a squiggly dictionary

    I organized a spell-checker with help Squiggly in my app ( http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/squiggly/).
    _newdict.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, handleLoadComplete);
    _newdict.load("dictionaries/en_EN/en_EN.aff", "dictionaries/en_EN/en_EN.dic");
    Everything works fine when the dictionary files is in the same folder as the app. But the dictionary have large size (over 5MB). Therefore load it on user demand. Files can not save the program folder, but only application Storage Directory.
    However, when initializing the dictionary there is an error: null cannot be parsed to a squiggly dictionary. I've tried both ways: file1.nativePath and file1.url, it is still the error.
    var file1:File = File.applicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath("dictionaries/en_EN/en_EN.aff");
    var file2:File = File.applicationStorageDirectory.resolvePath("dictionaries/en_EN/en_EN.dic");
    if (!file1.exists || !file2.exists){
        //download files from the server
    } else {
        _newdict.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, handleLoadComplete);
        _newdict.load(file1.nativePath,file2.nativePath);
       //_newdict.load(file1.url,file2.url);
    Tell me how to solve the issue, please?

    Subhranshu,
    Remove the CO extension and check whether it still throws the same error, or it throws the error when u extend the CO.

  • Spell Checker errors & auto-correct gone mad

    I have had a problem for awhile now with bad spell checking.
    If I make a typo, the softeware learns the mispelled word - and edits properly spelled instances of the word to be wrong later.
    ("the softeware" - I don't know if its Apple's or a 3rd party's).
    I am getting "Teh" errors, transpositions & complete case changes, for example words ending in "-ed" being changed
    to "-ing" endings here & there. A few other recurring ones, as well.
    Its acting like a keylogger associated with firmware in the darn keyboard!
    I've run checks for spyware & keyloggers & they came up negative.
    I can't tell if its in the core OS softeware, or being driven by a third party test drive.
    I can't seem to shut off enough spell checking to solve the problem.
    Example: the "e" in softeware above was an autocorrect, not what I typed & saw typed.
    The corrections are more than "ie" & "ei" transpositions & sometimes involved letters across the keyboard.
    Any ideas or solutions for this? Am I the only person with this problem?
    (I tried to find a close enough topic, but they were either old & archived, or not really quite my issue).

    How do you mean "don't know what software I'm using?"
    If the phenomenon occurs across most apps that are word intensive, then it appears not to be tied to any one.
    Something is recognizing a problem not there & "correcting" it, because I can see it happen & its not all due to operator error typos.
    I gather there's predominantly one spell checker engine across most applications, not one for each, if the symptoms are broad. IF that can be pinned on a "spellcheck" function. It isn't strictly a spellcheck.
    "Substitutions" yes is more accurate than calling it true spellchecking & I might be rmisrepresenting the phenomenon to call it that.
    Whatever is causing it, is learning & auto-correcting words that were may or may not be wrong. 2 letter pairs is mostly what happens. Or a capitalization of the 2nd letter in a word, to match the first letter: "IT" paired at the beginning of a sentence is a common manifestation.
    I can't find anything that could be left from an uninstalled test driven application.
    Your pointing to "Language & Text" may be valuable. The "ie" & "ei" substitutions are fairly common & German was one of the language options turned on, along with French & Italian – although I'm not sure what that panel even controls. I'm removing all options except English.
    I haven't seen a lot about this kind of thing on here, so I am assuming that its rare & likely something not part of the Apple suite of applications. I'm simply trying to narrow down what's going on.

  • CS6 Spell check error: The operation cannot complete because of an unknown error [CANT]

    Hi Everyone,

  • Firefox 14.0.1 has a spell checking error./ bug in the code

    I just had all my machines update to 14.0.1 (WIN XP SP3)
    I had a clean boot right before the update occurred.
    This is the first time I had used this version on this machine.
    When the program came up, I had no access to the spell checker at all. Nothing I did could change this (checking and un-checking the feature in the right click menu.
    So, I selected the option of restarting the browser in "SAFE MODE" with no add-ons. There was no change at all (still no spell checking)
    So, I went to this site, made an account, activated the count (this entire time FIREFOX had no spell checking) and I created a report.
    I was most of the way done writing the report when suddenly the spell checking started to work. I made no changes to the settings, when suddenly I had spell checking working.
    This means there is an intermittent error;p often the hardest to find from my 20+ years of programming experience (Senior IT contractor)..
    So, have find finding this one. Intermittent bugs are the hardest to track, and tend to come from issues like scope issues, settings stored in files/registry, overly convoluted code (like a rush job that isn't fully understood & was just hammered on until it seemed to work). From my experience it often happens in the last steps of finishing a release - accidentally introducing a bug into what was a working section of code (unexpected ramification are a suspect) into a previously working program piece of a program.

    Hi BarleySinger and thanks for reporting us this issue.
    Yes. Intermitent bugs are really difficult to track and solve, so please try to do this things:
    * Try to reset Firefox so all settings that may be creating this problems will be removed.
    The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
    Note: ''This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.''
    To Reset Firefox do the following:
    #Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
    #Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
    #Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
    Further information can be found in the [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]] article.
    Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    * Try to perform a antivirus scan on your computer so you check you have no malware.
    Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.
    You can try some of the following programs to scan for malware:
    * [http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware]
    * [http://support.kaspersky.com/faq/?qid=208283363 TDSSKiller - AntiRootkit Utility]
    * [http://windows.microsoft.com/MSE Microsoft Security Essentials] (A good permanent anti-virus if you don't already have one)
    Further information can be found in the [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]] article.
    Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    * Send us troubleshooting information.
    In order to be able to find the correct solution to your problem, we require some more non-personal information from you. Please do the following:
    *Click the Firefox button at the top left, then click the ''Help'' menu and select ''Troubleshooting information'' from the submenu. If you don't have a Firefox button, click the Help menu at the top and select ''Troubleshooting information'' from the menu.
    Now, a new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    *At the top of the page, you should see a button that says "Copy all to clipboard''. Click it.
    *Now, go back to your forum post and click inside the reply box. Press Ctrl+V to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.
    If you need further information about the Troubleshooting information page, please read the article [[Using the Troubleshooting Information page]].
    Thanks in advance for your help!
    * Check the issue is still reproducing intermitently, and it was not an isolated problem (Maybe Firefox was still preparing the spell checker).

  • Spell check error: Inteligent s/b Intelligent

    In what has to be one of the great oxymoron's of all time my spell check does not read inteligent as spelled incorrectly. It should be intelligent.
    While I did not intentionally change anything, I need to know if there is a way of getting into the spell check and removing the word as being accepted as correct.
    I went to the help web site and it said the following :
    +If you accidentally add a misspelled word to the dictionary, type the misspelling in the Spelling and Grammar window and click Ignore, or Control-click the misspelling and choose Unlearn Spelling from the shortcut menu.+
    I opened a new mail and typed the word in and highlighted it.
    (1) The ignore tab is grayed out, that does not apply.
    (2) There is no Unlearn Spelling from the shortcut menu when you control click.
    Do the two suggestions only apply if I accidentally hit the add (LEARN) button.
    Any other suggestions or am I doing something incorrectly.
    Thanks,
    Greg

    Hi Greg,
    I think the answer to your question is clear from the material quoted from the Help website:
    "If you accidentally add a misspelled word to the dictionary...choose Unlearn Spelling from the shortcut menu."
    Only something that has been "learned" can be "unlearned."

  • Spell checker error: VerifyError: Error #1053: Illegal override of UIMovieClip in mx.flash.UIMovieCl

    I am getting following errors when we moved from flex 3 to flex 4.
    VerifyError: Error #1053: Illegal override of UIMovieClip in mx.flash.UIMovieClip.
    at com.adobe.linguistics.spelling.ui::HaloHighlighter/doSpellingJob()
    at com.adobe.linguistics.spelling.ui::HaloHighlighter/spellCheckScreen()
    By the way, if we build the client application from eclipse, everything works ok. If we build it from mvn, the error will be appear(both worked fine before we moved to flex 4).
    Does anyone has any idea about what could cause this problem?
    Thanks

    This looks like a problem with components built with different versions of Flex. AdobeSpellingUI.swc is meant for Flex 3.x while AdobeSpellingUIEx.swc is for Flex 4.x
    Please try using AdobeSpellingUIEx.swc in your application to see if this fixes the problem.

  • Disable/configure spell checking??

    Hi,
    a short question about system-wide spell-checking in Mac OS X... can it be disabled?? i don't really understand how it came to it, but now several applications (e.g. Adium, Safari) keep underlining all words in red... not that i'm particularly bad at spelling, only they're all assuming i'm typing in german!! the only reason i can think of which may explain that is that i actually live in germany, and i've set it up somewhere in my system. but since i'm often typing in other languages as well, it's not really helpful... i've checked the preferences in adium, safari, as well as the system preferences, and i haven't been able to find how to change that...
    anyone has an idea? it's getting kind of annoying... :-\
    thx a lot!
    Pagod

    Caitlin,
    Thanks for your answer! Since then, I figured out that I could change those settings in about:config by selecting them and pressing enter.
    By the way I installed the nightly Fennec build, and it seems more responsive than the Firefox-named release version. It doesn't support the Adblock plugin, so that may be reason enough to switch back to the 1.0 version.

  • Leo's spell check: I WANT IT OFF!!!

    The new system-wide spell checker abilities are not for me. I work multilingual and the red dotted underlining is driving me crazy!
    Some apps will let you turn it off (edit menu), but some others won't, like iCal: you can only choose to show or not show the spelling and grammar pane... but I want it OFF!
    Any ideas?

    was also my first instinct
    ...still the red dotted lines...
