System won't shut down due to timeout of some sort

I was wondering if someone can help me figure out why since a couple of weeks, one or another app seems to crash and timeout the shut down process. Which of the logs in the console are relevant and how do I read it to make any sense out of it. Maybe someone can help me with this.
Thanks,
Andreas

This problem happened to me once. It happened because I improperly quit OpenOffice. Some things to include in your question: What program is stopping, how often does it happen, can you force quit it, and what happens if you do?

  • My system won't shut down

I have a 2.1GHz PowerPC G5 with OS X10.4.8 which is 16 month old. It worked fine until yesterday. Now It acts wierd in the following two ways:
First, the computer system won't shut down. When I click on Shut Down Button on the Screen, it won't shut down. Instead the screen shows the clock for ever unless I shut it down manually by pressing the Start button at the back of the computer.
Second, when I click on Software Update, it shows "Checking for new software..." window forever with the progress bar stuck at about one fifth.
Does any of you have a solution to these problems?

  • MBP won't shut down due to Mail

    Hi everyone,
I've had this problem on 2 different MBPs now- I can't shut down or restart because the Mail application refuses to close. The only way I have found to resolve this is to force quit Mail. I'm wondering if anyone has any solutions or suggestions I can try.
    Cheers,
    Adam

I experienced this same problem for the second time today. I'm using MBP just one month. I tried the recommended directions in this thread for removing the file specified and trying again to command quit mail, without success. But this got me thinking about my preferences I set up in spaces to open mail. Voila! Opened panes in spaces and found a message for connection to my email server awaiting my response. Mail then opened and I was able to quit mail and complete shutdown. Hope this ends my recurring problem and helps you, Adam.

  • System Won't Shut Down or Restart

    Shutdown/Restart
I am trying to restart my system from the apple menu and it just does nothing, same with shutdown.
    Force Quit
When I hit apple, alt, escape it makes an error noise, but when I select force quit from the apple menu then it does come up.
I'm running 10.3.9 please tell me if you need other information, and im sorry if you couldn't understand what is happening, I had a hard time trying to explain it so if you need more information please ask.

    Hey Folks,
I'm having the identical problem.... I've run repair permissions, mac janitor, and the activity monitor and console.... nothing to report there.
I've been having intermittent problems of late where the system will take a long time to generate a menu bar on login... sometimes never.
Now the no-restart/shutdown has crept in. About to reach for the hard shutdown button. Any thoughts/help would be appreciated.
    Thanks! M.

  • Just updated my RAM and now iMac shuts down "due to error" when in FCPX

    Hi there,
So, I just purchased FCPX last week.  Edited one of my projects only to find that my RAM is overloaded and isn't allowing my computer to handle to workload.  Therefore I upgraded my RAM today to the max (16GB). Get my iMac home and up and running, everything looks good. I start up FINAL CUT PRO X, load my Library.....then boom.....shut down "due to error". THREE TIMES.  Below is my system and info on new RAM.  PLEASE HELP ASAP AS THIS IS TIME SENSITIVE!  I upgraded my RAM due to the suggestion that it would solve my slow rendering/choppy video playback in FCPX.
    Thanks. Ashley

  • External hard drive won't shut down after switch from OS10.5 to OS10.4.11

i recently chanded my OS from 10.5 to 10.4.11 (as a programme i want to use is not compatible with leopard), but since i have done this my external hard-drive won't shut down automatically when i shut down my mac. i have to switch it off at the plug instead.
can anyone suggest how i can get it to do this again?
i'm a little concerned that i'm damaging the external drive by turning it off manually all the time..
    thanks

Some hard drives shut off with shutdown, some don't. Sometimes hard drives that did shut off with one system will not do the same with a different system. My hard drives which did shut off, prior to 10.5 now stay on.
This is not really a problem as all hard drives spin down after 10- 20 minutes when not in use, whether your computer is on or off. Leaving the drive on is fine, shutting it off manually is fine.

  • 10.5.8 won't shut down after bad SD disk removal.  It stops all applications but won't get past the final shut down screen.

I had a disk error with a SD disk from my camera.  Removed the disk from the card reader and got the Disk Removal Error alert.  Then the whole thing froze up on me.  Noting else would eject, No other apps would shut down and basically nothing worked.  I couldn't shut down so I removed the battery.  Restarted the computer ok then tried to repair the SD disk in question.  No luck on the repair so ejected it again.  Then tried to restart OS and it won't shut down again except everything still works but it just won't shut down.

  • Mac shut down due to problem; I rebooted fine. how do I determine what the problem was?

mac shut down due to problem; I rebooted fine. how do I determine what the problem was?

When shut down and rebooted, the Mac OS X does background maintenance on the system. That can solve minor issues.
Beyond this, it is a good idea to run Disk Repair yourself just to make sure.
Reboot with the option key held down. On the screen that comes up select the Recovery disk icon and Continue.
On the next screen Clcik Disk Utility and Continue.
In DU, in the list on the left select the drive to be repaired - click the item that is indented to the right, not an an item whose name starts on the far left.
Click First Aid, then Repair Disk.
After that is done, quit DU and restart as usual.

  • Windows won't shut down

I got a iPod nano about a month ago, and installed iTunes on my PC. All is well so far... until I try to shut down. The computer restarts instead. After installing and unistalling iTunes from the cd and apple.com nothing changes. I've tried shuting down all iPod and iTunes related processes in the task manager before shutting down, but the result is always the same.
Called Apple help, and they've never heard of this problem.
Can someone help? I like iTunes to much to give up on this one.
    Morten G
    Trondheim, Norway

What makes you think iTunes is causing this?
Are you getting some kind of error? Have you looked in your application & system event viewer logs?
I mean, if you've shut down iTunes & iPod processes in task manager, and Windows still won't shut down.....why would iTunes be causing this?

  • My mini won't shut down

when i try to shut down my mini, it keeps running. it gets to the point of logging out and i can see just the plain desktop picture. the fan is going, the monitor is on. it won't actually turn off. i've waited for 30 minutes. finally, i'll just unplug it (probably not good.)
    any suggestions?
    thank you.

Usually if the system refuses to shut down it's because a process is running that it can't force-quit, often related to an external device, but sometimes an installed application attempting to communicate.
Often the only way to resolve this is to power down by pressing and holding the power button for 5-10 seconds. This is not an elegant shutdown, particularly if the system is attempting to write to the hard drive in the hung activity, so on the next reboot, it is wise to run Disk Utility to verify the internal hard drive and ensure it hasn't developed a problem.
There's no simple way to troubleshoot this sort of problem since the devices connected to the system and the software in use all vary from system to system, but it's best to start by disconnecting all external devices other than keyboard mouse and screen and booting the system, then trying to shut down again before running any application. If that works fine, then it's a problem in an app or driver or external device. If not, it's in MacOS or hardware.
If the latter, it's probably a good starting point to repair permissions using Disk Utility, though sometimes a little more drastic spring-cleaning is needed using one of the general purpose utilities such as OnyX or YASU (YASU being my favorite for simplicity of use and the lack of options that can do more harm than good). Running all YASU tasks can help a range of behavioral problems. Another good utility to have on hand for these type of problems is Preferential Treatment, which can be run on both system and user levels to find damaged or corrupt properly list (plist) files which can also cause unpredictable behavior.
If the former, then it would help to know what devices and software you are using, but troubleshooting would typically need each to be connected/used individually to see at what point the system then began to have problems again.

  • Macbook won't shut down unless i force quit!

Hi my  macbook won't shut down unless i force shutdown.... it's been like this for a while so i hardly ever shut it down..... can't even close the case as it will then just continually shutdown and re-start itself on n on n on, whilst shut!!!
It does occasionally shut down successfully ...... but today it shut down fine.... 1st time i tried it for well over a week! But then refused to start up! 1st time it's done this!! it took over two hours to convince it to start!!! Any thoughts would be massively appreciated ..... apple care run out and ZERO funds to have fixed !!! : (( v sad as i love my mac and can't do without it!!!

Exactly what did you do to run Disk Utility and exactly what happened up to the freeze?
I called some place to ask for advice and they said it could be my logic board???
That's an easy answer to give but not necessarily the correct one.
If you have the system restore disc that came with your Mac, boot with that disc in the Mac while holding down the "D" key. That will invoke hardware diagnostics. Run those several times to investigate the possibility that your Mac has a hardware flaw.

  • G5 dual 1.8 WON'T shut down with TIGER 10.4.7

Hi all. Updated the G5 dual with Tiger, did the 10.4.7 combo update and it still won't shut down. Have to hold the power button. I've tried creating a new administrator but to no avail. Logging out won't do it either. I upgraded from 10.3.9 for music software reasons--too bad I was "forced up" since 10.3.9 worked fine. My G4 laptop 1.33 has no issues with Tiger at all.
    Any suggestions??

    Contributed by Fumiaki Kawashima a Level 4 here;
There are many reasons to become unable shutting down or restarting from Apple Menu. Some were explained by other posters.
Most importantly, loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action. However, the issue proves that somewhere in those routines cannot be performed.
Users authentication system seems to be intact because you can restart or shutdown from the login window. However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and affect loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart mentioned above.
Test if you can shutdown from the keyboard-- Holding down controloptioncommand keys, and then press the eject key.
Check if the loginwindow plists are corrupted. To do this test, remove the followings to temporary folders on the desktop, and shutdown from the keyboard shortcut combination. Restart the computer to test the recurrence.
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
    /Users/HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
Try disabling Login Items for third-party applications via the Accounts system preference, if any.
Verify whether any third-party kernel extensions (including device drivers) interfere with the loginwindow hooks process-- Start up with a Safe-mode, then test the Restart from Apple Menu to see whether it works. Also, boot into a Single-user mode, and test if "reboot" command is available from the BSD layer. The I/O Kit API for software developers provides a shutdown hook so that ".kext" troubleshooting may need to be considered. Besides, some bad programmed extension may not be unloaded automatically at a shutdown or restart.
If the computer is configured with Irish language Input method and/or third-party Irish keyboard, try disabling them to test.
A third-party application or custom script may interfere with the loginwindow hooks for the Shut Down or Restart. For example, if you install an application that prevents casually powering down a system, the Shut Down and Restart buttons may not work. Also, if you install a P2P file sharing application, try uninstalling it.
As last resorts, troubleshoot a bad RAM and consider "Erase and Install" solution.
    OPTION:
Post a part of system.log that indicates events from "localhost kernel[0]: standard timeslicing quantum is 10000 us" to the next same line.
This may help to narrow down because restarting or shutting down the system process can initiate the procedure programmatically by sending an appropriate Apple event to Mac OS X Tiger's system process (loginwindow).
Likewise, check console.log whether any failures is reported.
    Corrections:
Most importantly, the loginwindow (the parent process is launchd.) close out the user session, continue to set the device permissions and user preferences to their defaults in a restart action, or the process power off the system in a shutdown action.
However, the admin account authenticated by the Tiger security systems could confuse somehow and it may impact on the loginwindow process for setting up the user environment. This may result in interfering with the process for the shutdown and restart as mentioned above.
    Addendum:
If you post a copy of system.log, consider to edit the Ethernet interface ID to a fake value.
    API = Application Programming Interface

  • PS cs3 and Illustrator cs3 won't shut down

I have these apps intalled on two other win 7 x64 computers with
out any problem but on this win 7 x64 system both ps cs3 and illustrator cs3  hang up when I try to close them. It is a little intermittent on illustrator and at least once it has closed properly but most of the time it takes about 2-5 mins to shut down or it won't shut down at all.
Photoshop is worse and always either takes 3-5 mins if it does shut down but in most cases it will not shut down and I have to force quit the application. Any suggestions please.

Security settings for the Adobe licensing service or something liek that, possibly Version Cue! Run as admin to diagnose, then manually configure the services...
