System wont boot after restart, hangs..

Hello.
Recently i have got a strange problem.
When i restart or power on my computer without using the "main power switch on psu" my system hangs either just before cpu post or memory post.
If i turn it off  and on again using the switch on the psu it boots just fine..
I have searched alot around the internet and tried many things. Tried disconnenting devices, resetting cmos, disconnect everything from mobo and resetting cmos, tried new bios, tested my ram sticks in memtest and so on..
The funny thing is that this problem suddenly occured. My system worked fine until 2 weeks ago.
Also it have happened that it freezes in windows, screen freezes and computer stops responding. But usually in have run for 2-4 days before that happens.
It would be very much appreciated if someone could help me out with this
My specs:
Msi k8n neo2 platinum 54g
Amd 64 3200 winchester
4 * 512mb 3200 ocz ram
Mist 430w psu
4* 200gb maxtor s-ata
card reader
dvd-rw
ati x800xl
+ alot of silent fans

Ok, now i am confused.
I have discussed this problem with other people in a norwegian forum. They guess that it is the motherboard which is causing this problem.
I also think that. Because system have worked perfect until recently. As  i said earlier i have tried to disable some hardware to see how that worked and it was the same.
Now when system i booted it is 100% stable. The freezes that occured in windows was software related.
Also discovered that if i load windows in fail safe mode problem is gone! Have not been able to figure that one out.
Almost getting depressed here.
Comments? Tips?

In addition, making unsubstantiated statements as Deathstalker did that, quote "It has already been proven that 50% of all the problems relating to Vid Cards is Power Supply Related...." is not a valid argument either. If you're going to make those sort of claims, then you should back it up with firm data...
The point is, someone in the forums already did. All the forum regulars should remember when it happened too. A guy chastized us because we ask about the specs on people's power supplies. He took every post in the VGA forum to date and catagorized the solutions and found that only 50% of the problems in the forums were Power Supply Related.  To me, if one out of every two problems in the VGA Forums is Power Supply Related, by asking the question, we can identify and solve 50% of the problems.
But we are used to people like yourself coming along every few months.  Are you sure you did not used to log into these forums under the username of elzie?
Is this one of your old Threads:
    A must read for everyone....
    Richard
Yes, he does sound a bit like me doesn't he? (or vice versa). But no, we are two different people which your moderators can prove by looking at the IP addresses of both myself and elzie.
But I must admit he echo's my views. There is a definite danger that some posters who are here to help people will latch on to one supposed "solution" i.e. the PSU which is then tailored to fit all problems. Same goes for avoiding flashing the VGA BIOS especially over the Internet.
But as I've said before, 98% of system problems are software related and hardware only plays a minor role. It's a bit like a car. Without gas, you're not going anywhere regardless of all the technology that's been pumped into it. But gas can get contaminated with grit and can clog up fuel lines. So what should we do then? Change the whole car maybe? Or just replace the carburetor? After all, we don't want to risk damaging the machine by cleaning it do we?
There's just too much emphasis these days on blaming the product as the cause of the problem and replacing parts rather than taking the view that it's the user who has caused the problem himself by not following instructions when installing software. Statistics can be adapted to suit the issue too. But as I've already said, if the PSU was the main cause of failure of high end cards, the Internet would be literally littered with news about it. But there aren't any such articles, so how do you explain that?? And as Toms Hardware.com mentions here, the CPU and high end card can draw 160 watts. So it stands to reason that if you've got a 300W PSU, you've got more than enough over to run both doesn't it??
It's all very convenient to say, "replace the PSU and your troubles will be over", but if the problem persists after doing that, it won't do MSI reputation any good and the only benefit will be that a PSU manufacturer will have made a little extra profit this year.

  • System wont boot after flash

i flashed the bios the first time to upgrade to 3.6 but noticed the temps issue and wanted to revert to 3.5, now here started the problem. i downloaded the zip file from msi site, read the instructions file and since i couldnt made a boot disk for windows xp pro (tried the "make a dos startup disk" but the system wouldnt boot from it) i used the flash utility that came with live update 3. im now sure this was the biggest mistake i had ever done: i choose the A6728IMS.350 file as ROM file and it started the flash in windows (had no programs running)
after reboot the system wouldnt start
i looked at the D-Bracket and was surprised to see that it was hanging on Memory Detection Test ! so i cant use the flash recovery feature cause it wont even initialize the keyboard
any chance of recover or i can say bye bye to my bios?
P4 2.80c Ghz HT enabled no OC
MSI 865PE P series (the one with GLan, not sure of exact model)
1 Gb Kingston 400 Dual DDR (2X512 module)
    Ati Radeon 9800 Pro
    Be-Quiet 400 W active PFC S1.3 PSU

have you tried to do the bios recovery ?
i had this same issue when i flashed the bios when i first got this mobo.
its basically bullshit on the part of MSI,  you cant flash from a floppy, it wont let you, you have to have the bios on a hard drive.
the problem with that is, that it only works for a FAT16 or FAT32 hard drive since you have to do it thru dos.
i mean is MSI thinking, how many peple with Windows XP still have FAT hard drives., luckily i do. otherwise.  ggrrr.
and you cant make a start up disk ? thats pretty wierd, format the floppy and choose Copy System Files  this will make it bootable.
just put the bios file you want on a regular floppy, i dont think i made mine bootable, and hold the "Bios Recovery" button,, sorry i cant recall what it is.
and i will use whatever bios you have on the floppy.
but please be sure to read the bios recovery tutorial.
i tried to flash with on of the bios's 3 times and it still wouldnt work, i had to keep going back to the original bios.
the latest bios flashes fine so i dont know i think there is something seriously wrong with the bios from ,, i think it was Aug, or Nov.
also have you tried moving the jumper on the motherboard ??? and starting the machine ?  this will change all bios settings to default, and could help you.

yeah thats all, after reboot no sign of life.
As this is a server i cant do any analizes. As there is no news entry on the web-page i did not expected any fundamental change which causes the server no longer to start but it seems like a switch to Gentoo is really needed after this problem is solved.
Anyay, until then, i hope you can help me with that

Same here, try to downgrade linux-lts

and here, just like your case.
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=148046
    But no solution for now.

  • System wont boot after fresh install

Hello out there, i am in need of some serious help.I decided to upgrade my pc as she was showing signs of stress. so after alot of checking i decided on the k7n2 delta ilsr (future proofing in mind) amd 2600xp barton(333mhz) pc3200 512ddr
    for the time being.
my problem is i cant get my system up and running, not even in safe mode.
I have tried alot of suggestions from tech supports and from these forums but with still no joy.
Everything seems to go pair shaped when windows is setting up, i have tried two seperate h/drives, win2k, winme (which i nearly got to safe mode with).
have been told everything compatible although will need to upgrade psu sooner rather than later and agp card later but both should be ok for now with what min drives i need.
    error messages are
    irql not less or even
    boot drive innaccessable
    config initialisation failed
somebody please help, spent whole of easter w/end trying which never went doen to well on the home fron (if you know what i mean)
am i doing something wrong, what should the cmos/bios settings be at.
my latest attempt was with min spec,: agp, 1 cdrom, 1 h/drive, etc.
sorry for the lenghy message but i am starting to loe hair over this now.
    thanks in advance,    srios

morning people, (if your up yet, its 8am)
bought a new psu from pcworld last night. they only had one brand, jeantech, i hope this is ok, i think so, i know someone running this psu with a p4 2.8/ msi system with no probs
    anyway its spec is as follows;
                        +5v   +3.3v     +12v     -5v    -12v   +5vsb
                        35a      28a       17a      0.3a   0.8a      2a
                            200w           204w    1.5w   9.6w    10w
it also has extra 4 pin cpu supply, do i connect this as well as an alternative or do i plug in to boost supply to +12v @ 17a x2 = 34a, or does it not work like that?!
right then, i'm gonna set this all up again in a little while, so is there anything else i need to do or check.
i do have one more question though, i have win2k on a h/drive now so can i just unplug old m/board and put in new one, or do i have to do a fresh install and format the drive first  and start from the begining
anyway must dash and thanks for your time and help, .....srios

    ok slight success
    now screen is on
    but with this message:
    checksum BAd
    press F1 to run setup
press F2 to run default values and continue
that's normal and expected. go to BIOS, then "LOAD BIOS OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS", then "SAVE AND EXIT". message should gone.
after that if you need to apply some custom BIOS options, back to BIOS and apply them.

If you can reach the Recovery Environment by booting that, try the Startup Repair and let us know what happens. Sometimes you need to run it more than once.

  • System wont boot up

    I have the following pc
    Leadtek 9800 GX
    MSI P45-Neo3 FR mobo
    Corsair CMPSU-450VX
    the others don't matter.
Now, the system wont boot up if I dont do the following
1 - Shut down the PSU, remove power cable, remove battery. Push the power button a couple of times. Plug the power cable in, put the battery back (or just leave it out), power on the PSU and start the pc.
    or
2 - Change the fsb jumper back and forth (at which point the system behaves as if I have removed the power cable and stuff at point 1).
If I don't do this the fan on the video card wont stop screaming and the monitor wont get any image (the card has 2 lights, one besides each dvi output. when I do 1 or 2, the lower one, where I plug my monitor, will go blue, the other one stay green).
Any ideas? The video card is ok, proc and psu aswell (since it "requires" a "fresh-bios" to boot up).. I'm lost.

My bad, forgot to mention the cpu
Pulled everything out, non-static surface. Tried with cpu, gpu + 1 memory and it works. Added the second memory, still works. Plugged in the sound card.. it works.
So, is there a short-circuit in the case? If so, how do I solve the problem without changing or modifying the case (its and antec 9000) ?
P.S. - I left all the cables case-mobo (power, reset, usb, audio, etc) so theyre not a problem.

    Edit
Effin twilight zone I swear. Put everything back the way it was before and... it works. It freaking works. Well.. I get a BSOD but at least it works :D Any explanation?

i update to mavericks. All was fine, But i allmost never shut down, or restart the imac.
After some time, I did for a reason i dont remember, had to restart the imac. while booting, it was stuck on the grey screen.. i wasn't able to get it started up, not in safe mode, not after disk repair.. i think i might have tried all the little tricks to get it running again...
luckily i did have a time machine back up...
after installing this back up, everything was fine again..
until 2 weeks later, for some reason i had to reboot again.. and again, it was stuck.. only thing to get the imac working again.. reinstall from time machine back up
after this , it tried rebooting everyday, and the imac kept working..
after a few days, i forgot to reboot for a few days.. and what did you think.. the imac is stuk again.. so while reinstalling the time machine back up. I am writing this. anyone else having this rather strange problem.. if i restart the imac now and then i keeps working.. if i dont after a few days, and i do reboot the imac.. is wont boot anymore..
    Any suggestions are welcome
    greetings

The long tone is an indication that a firmware update is installing. Do you get a progress bar at the bottom of you screen after letting the power button go?
Have you reset the PRAM? (cmdalt+PR when you restart the machine)
Also repair permissions when the machine is up and running.

  • Intel mac mini wont boot after system restore

    Hi,
I ran the system restore on my intel mac mini using the genuine leopard cd that came with it.
Now it wont boot. When you press power the light comes on but it does not chime and there is not video output to any monitor.
Anyone know what could be wrong?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You picked 10.4.1 in your profile.
Intel Mac Minis at minimum came with 10.4.4.
If it came with a 10.5 genuine DVD, it most certainly was not running 10.4.1 or 10.4.4. Perhaps you mistook one Mac Mini install DVD for another? Does your Mac Mini have 4 USB ports on back? What does the 10.5 installer disc you used look like?

  • [SOLVED] arch wont boot after triple boot experiment

    Hi,
I cannot boot into arch anymore after installing ubuntu to another partition on my hard drive.
I used grub to dual boot arch and windows, but i need to use ROS and there are no working packages for arch so i tried to install ubuntu on another partition and triple boot.
Somhow my arch got broken by the ubuntu setup.
    Windows still boots fine.
I already chrooted (to arch) from a live cd and reinstalled grub and did
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
, after that ubuntu appeared in the grub selection menu but arch still wont boot.
Arch boot hangs after checking /dev/sda6 for errors (arch partition), i cannot type or ctrl+shift+fx to another terminal
Anybody has an idea what got broken by ubuntu and how i can repair arch?

Hey so i chroot again following this artikle: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Change_Root
    then i did
    pacman -Syyu mkinitcpio linux udev
    and restarted
I tried starting arch again and it seemed to still not work, this time i gave it some more time and it actually booted.
It took very long though (more then 3 minutes or so)
in journalctl if found those lines:
Sep 09 04:20:00 meanarchy kernel: USB Video Class driver (1.1.1)
    Sep 09 04:21:25 meanarchy systemd[1]: Job dev-disk-by\x2duuid-12027d8a\x2dd4b0\x2d4559\x2daa1c\x2de3ea5ca8f5bb.device/start timed out.
Sep 09 04:21:25 meanarchy systemd[1]: Timed out waiting for device dev-disk-by\x2duuid-12027d8a\x2dd4b0\x2d4559\x2daa1c\x2de3ea5ca8f5bb.device.
    Sep 09 04:21:25 meanarchy systemd[1]: Dependency failed for /dev/disk/by-uuid/12027d8a-d4b0-4559-aa1c-e3ea5ca8f5bb.
    Sep 09 04:21:25 meanarchy systemd[1]: Starting Swap.
so it seems boot is searching for some disk device 1:25 minutes before it fails.
I think i know the reason: I resized the Partition of arch while installing ubuntu this changes the uuid of the partition, now something is waiting for this disk to become ready because it still has the old uuid written somwhere.
UUIDs really suck, they are not human readable and always have problems with them if i touch my partitions.

  • Imac wont boot after this last update

I downloaded an update (automatically through software update). After it installed it told me to wait for computer to restart and then hold power button until the long tone, then it should be done. I did that with no problem.
Ever since then though it wont boot regularly. It wither sits at grey screen forever OR gives me the prohibit sign. The only way to get it to work it to hold that power button until the long tone again.
Any idea whats wrong and how i fix it??
Thanks in advance for any help.

The long tone is an indication that a firmware update is installing. Do you get a progress bar at the bottom of you screen after letting the power button go?
Have you reset the PRAM? (cmdalt+PR when you restart the machine)
Also repair permissions when the machine is up and running.

  • Imac wont boot after 10.8.5

white screen after update. 2012 imac 27". was originally leopard i think. actually third time the same machine has done this on updates since lion installed. Last two times took full erase and re-install to get started. Boots fine in safe mode. disc utility runs fine although repair permisions shows a ton of itunes issues that wont clear in safe mode. Boot in R mode and they show to clear but show up again after restart. Ready to go Office Space on this thing.  nothing connected. add on software is Quickbooks and office only

    updates
jan 6 - erased drive, reinstalled 10.6 using disc, update software. gets to 10.8 and white screens on restart. disc utilities agian, repair disc-no errors, repair permission has a few that wont go away
jan 7 - erased drive, reinstalled 10.6 using disc - works great, update software to 10.6.8 - works great, download and install 10.9.1 - white screen, agian with disc utility etc, also tried internet recovery
jan 8 - wiped drive again. downloaded discmaker x and bought new 8gb jump drive. download full version installer 10.9.1. make bootable disc. restart and boot from disc. installs and restarts to finish install. then grey screen
i dont know what else to try here. ive called several local places and left msg's. im currently doing the erase thing again but this time with secure 3x overwrite option.
    drive is 1TB ST31000528AS
since 10.9.1 install there are two other drives showing up on disc utility.
    disk 2 - OS X Install ESD
    disk 3 - OSX X base system

  • Wont Boot after unplugged?

Just received an iMac g4 and it didn't come with a power cord. I will be receiving one in a couple days anyways. I have to unplug the cord and use it to charge my laptop and am wondering if this is the reason why my imac g4 700mhz 256 mb ram wont boot up. It hangs at the apple logo with the spinning loading symbol. I usually have it unplugged for a max of 12 hours and most often have it unplugged for about 3-5 hours though. Now when I get a chance later today I am going to attempt to reset the pram and check to make sure my imacs startup disk isn't set to network boot. Any help would be well appreciated.

You could try to boot the computer while holding the Shift key down, but
if you do not know the Admin password, you won't get past the next step
where you'd have to log in with that, in order to proceed. This step can
take time, as you hold the Shift key to start in SafeBoot mode, and at the
login, you let go of the button (to be sure it boots Safeboot.) Then one can
generally run Disk Utility, and choose 'repair disk permissions' in Disk First
Aid, on the volume Macintosh HD, or the name given the computer drive.
If the small battery on the logic board of the iMac G4 no longer has power,
it would need to be replaced. The battery is a 1/2AA Lithium 3.6v battery.
And getting there is a chore.
You could try resetting the PMU (power management unit) as one of the
temporary last resorts; since the lack of a good battery on the logic board
may require this action if resetting the PRAM/NVRAM doesn't help it.
    • How to reset PRAM and NVRAM:

    • Resetting the iMac's (Flat Panel G4) - Power Management Unit (PMU)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1712
A take-apart guide is available to help get into it, to replace battery and
also upgrade RAM and both kinds of drives within the computer.

The original power cord with the 'odd end' that goes into the iMac G4
is one of the harder ones to get; except for the fact some PC portables
use a similar cord to go into their power brick, may help find another.
Usually, the original cords go missing if a computer is sitting around
where someone may decide to use it elsewhere, or on another iMac.
    Hopefully this helps somewhat.
    Good luck & happy computing!
