Systemd and kernel 3.6 's hybrid-sleep
Hi!
As of kernel 3.6, hybrid-sleep is now fully working. So i was wondering: does systemd support hybrid-sleep? I use only it to suspend/hibernate (i remove upower and pm-utils, relying only on systemctl suspend/hibernate).
Thanks guys!
Ps: I don't know if this is the right place, actually linux 3.6 is in testing, but the question is not regarding it.
I have the following setup:
I've made a couple of scripts in /usr/local/lib:
/usr/local/lib/sys-power-disk-suspend
#!/bin/sh
echo -n suspend > /sys/power/disk
/usr/local/lib/sys-power-disk-platform
#!/bin/sh
echo -n "platform" > /sys/power/disk
Copy /usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-suspend.service and /usr/lib/systemd/system/systemd-hibernate.service to /etc/systemd/system
Modify both files:
/etc/systemd/system/systemd-suspend.service: Add ExecStartPre=/usr/local/lib/sys-power-disk-suspend and change suspend by hibernate.
[Unit]
Description=Suspend
Documentation=man:systemd-suspend.service(8)
DefaultDependencies=no
Requires=sleep.target
After=sleep.target
[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStartPre=/usr/local/lib/sys-power-disk-suspend
ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-sleep hibernate
/etc/systemd/system/systemd-hibernate.service: Add ExecStartPre=/usr/local/lib/sys-power-disk-platform
[Unit]
Description=Hibernate
Documentation=man:systemd-suspend.service(8)
DefaultDependencies=no
Requires=sleep.target
After=sleep.target
[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStartPre=/usr/local/lib/sys-power-disk-platform
ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-sleep hibernate
and type as root
systemctl --system daemon-reload
Now I can type systemctl suspend for hybrid-suspend and systemctl hibernate for hibernation and shutdown
The good part is that this setup works on gnome 3.4 too, AFAIK it uses upower for hibernation/suspend and upower now uses systemd when available.
It seems that systemd uses only /sys/power/state for suspend/hibernate and
the hybrid-suspend needs to write "suspend" to /sys/power/disk before. The scripts do just that, and the systemd-suspend.service change to "hibernate" produces an hybrid-suspend instead of a "simple" suspend.
Hope it helps

Systemd hybrid-sleep not working
Hi!
Today i finally tried out (only for curiosity) hybrid-sleep, and i discovered it is not working.
I'm not using testing repo. So, systemd 196 should be able to hybrid-sleep.
First problem: i need to put my password to hybrid-sleep, while for suspend and hibernate that is not necessary.
Second problem: as far as i understand, hybrid-sleep should be a normal suspend, but in background the netbook should suspend to disk too, in event of lack of energy. Is this correct? Well, on my netbook, it only hibernates, as if i did a "systemctl hibernate".
journalctl
dic 02 18:48:33 arch systemd-sleep[4421]: Hibernating and suspending system...
dic 02 18:49:09 arch systemd-sleep[4421]: System thawed.
But it is not "hibernating and suspending", it is only hibernated.
By the way, i'm not using pm-utils.
Any hint?
Thanks!I can reproduce this behaviour with systemd-196-2. systemctl hybrid-sleep just hibernates and powers off. Further investigation of this issue brought the following issues:
systemctl suspend works as expected.
systemctl hibernate works also.
Disabling hibernation (by disabling the swap and resume partition) leads to suspend to ram with the hybrid-sleep command.
Circumventing systemd does the job and correctly hibernates AND suspends:
echo suspend > /sys/power/disk; echo disk > /sys/power/state
So I guess the kernel part of hybrid-sleep and the hardware work correctly and somehow the systemd-hybrid-sleep.service does not work. The service file has the line:
ExecStart=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd-sleep hybrid-sleep
which seems to be the relevant command. -
Systemd and systemd-logind crash due to failed assertion
Hi,
my system is currently only semi-usable because systemd *and* systemd-logind seem to be aborting due to a failed assertion. All systemd- and socket-related programs do not work. There are many zombie processes. These problems started after a reboot. (To be precise, the system hung up probably because of some graphics driver/mesa-related bug and I pushed the reset button.)
I previously had testing and community-testing enabled, but disabling them did not fix the issue. Also, I was running a custom 3.17 kernel before the reboot but the normal 3.16.4, the testing 3.17.1 and the linux-ck-ivybridge 3.16.6 (from repo-ck) kernels also don't work.
/usr is not on a seperate partition.
One bug should have been fixed upstream (here) and the other "disappeared" (there).
Pacman logs are cluttered with my attempts to fix the problem by reinstalling some packages (systemd, dbus, linux) so I didn't include them, but nothing important was upgraded right before the problem appeared.
The relevant log lines in short:

Hello
So i have decided to install systemd and so far is working great and i am just getting to know it. I have one problem - i disabled smbd.service but samba is somehow enabled (tough systemd is not showing samba as enabled) because i can reach other Windows computer. What is the trick?

But this disappear when i close Dolphin.

[SOLVED]Problem with systemd and awesome wm
Hello,
I recently have installed systemd and I have enabled slim.service, but after logging in throught slim I cannot run any programs in my awesome wm. Well, actually I can, but only a few seconds after login. If I run xterm and then try to run a program throught it I get messages "no protocol specified" and "cannot open display :0.0". If I quit awesome/X and login again(without reboot) all works just fine. Could you please help me to solve this problem? Thank you in advance.

Last edited by ArtemGuzhva (2012-06-18 07:46:12)Okay, it is working fine now I have uninstalled initscripts and installed sysvcompat.
NOTE: before uninstalling initscripts and sysvinit, reboot your computer with init=/bin/systemd in your kernel cmdline, because you will not be able to shutdown properly due to the lack of inittab.

Hard Feezing and Kernel Panics - Early 11 MBP
Hey just wondering if anyone has any insight into this...
I've been experiencing hard freezing and kernel panics on my Early 11 Macbook Pro for several months. The hard freezing only happens when I wake up my system from sleep. I'll open the lid and when it happens, within seconds, everything locks up. No spinning wheel, just frozen machine and I have to do a hard reboot. I also get random kernel panics as well.
I took it in the the Genius Bar a few weeks ago, they ran tests and said the hardware was all fine and that I should reinstall Lion after a clean format. Well I did that and still having issues. Not sure if it's being caused by a 3rd party app...or if I really do have bad hardware after all.
When they did a diagnostic they said that 'soundflower' was showing up in my kernel panic log and that I should find what that is and delete it, so I did. In my most recent and only kernel panic, shown below, I don't see any 3rd party language anywhere.
Anyone have an idea of what might be causing this?

DELL Inspiron N5110 does not Shut Down and does not wake up from Sleep
Hello.
I have Dell Inspiron N5110 which cannot shut down neither in Windows 7 nor in Ubuntu Linux. I specifically booted Ubuntu Live from the CD to eliminate the possibility that the problem is in the Windows 7. Shutdown in Ubuntu does not work either. This proves that the reason in not a BACKGROUND application in Windows that remains hanging and does not allow the laptop to shut down.
The laptop cannot wake up after Sleep or Hibernate either.
I have tried every solution that you advised to all the other people in the forum that have the same issue.
1. The laptop cannot shut down in Safe Mode either.
2. It cannot shut down even after Clean Boot Mode - all non-MS services disabled and all Startups disabled.
3. I tried changing the Advanced Power Options of "Allow Hybrid Sleep" - both ON for "On AC Power" and "Running on battery" - no change.
4. I tried installing the latest video drivers for Nvidia. This did not help either.
5. Running only on battery does not change anything - still cannot shutdown.
6. Running only on AC adapter without battery - still cannot shutdown.
7. I tried removing the AC adapter and battery and holding the POWER button for 30 seconds to RESET the laptop - did not work.
ATTENTION: I've been reading your forums all day and saw at least 10-15 reports of the same problem and not a single fixed case.
8. This is why I have not tried Flashing the BIOS to the latest version - I read other people tried that and it didn't work either.
9. I loaded BIOS default settings (F9) - still cannot shutdown.
REMARK: Changing something in the BIOS and trying to Exit once caused the laptop to freeze and I had to Power Off by holding the button for longer.
10. I ran DELL Diagnostics from Boot menu (F12 at startup) - no errors found.
11. I could not locate IEEE 1394 Adapter in Device Manager to change its Power Management settings.
Actually none of the suggestions you may give for changing something in Windows makes sense because I already mentioned that shut down in Ubuntu does not work either.
The issue seems to be either in the BIOS or a hardware problem. But which component? Is it the CD/DVD drive?
This is a new laptop.
Please advice how to proceed. If you know which component fails please tell me.Remove the keyboard and palm rest (guide from dell shows you how) and you should see a small coin cell battery. Remove it for at least 10 seconds, then put it back in. Enter BIOS and make sure there isn't anything weird that was changed. It should work properly now. I have had this working in Ubuntu 12.04 for the last few days, with no problems.

Append 'init=/bin/systemd' to kernel command line
I have just updated my Arch_64bit and have been adviced by Pacman to ":: Append 'init=/bin/systemd' to your kernel command line in your bootloader to replace sysvinit with systemd".
I dual boot Ubuntu and Arch and use the GRUB2 from Ubuntu. I have installed Arch's Grub to its own partition.
However there is no /etc/default/grub in my File System instead there is /boot/grub/menu.lst... mine is a recent Arch install and I wonder how I ended up with Grub1.
In /etc/default/grub I would have edited: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash init=/bin/systemd". I have no idea how to deal with Grub1 /boot/grub/menu.lst.
Pointers will be helpful.
Also, why do I need to append 'init=/bin/systemd' to the kernel command line? Without doing so my Arch is booting and working fine. So far I haven't encountered any issues I can tell with my current Arch, the way it is.
Do I need really need to append the above to my Kernel command line?

Thanks Jason, (and thanks for the quote I use as signature)
However, it turns out that I may NOT have installed GRUB during Arch install... 'coz there are no 'stage' files in the /boot/grub there is just menu.lst and also because mine is only a few months old Arch install.
#pacman -SS does not show GRUB as installed. So I did not install it.
So how do I go about it? Do I have Install GRUB now to "append 'init=/bin/systemd' to kernel command line"? -
Hi,
I have an Imac 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo desktop which I have upgraded to lion.
Recently I keep getting kernel panics when waking from sleep mode and I cannot figure out what it is.
I am not very computer savy - I.e. I use a computer but don't know programming etc.
The computer then asks me to shut down and restart.
Any help would be much appreciated as this is driving me crazy.

DaveHi, for other peoples information - I finally figured out the problem. It was actually a faulty RAM module which I had bought. I had upgraded from 2 to 4 gb of RAM using an approved type of RAM for my particular computer. Finally I removed one module of RAM (after doing nearly everything else under the sun including trying to reinstall the operating system and wipe the computer etc) and the computer worked fine.

Kernel panic when waking from sleep
My eMac (1Ghz, 256 Mb RAM, dual boot OS 9.2.2/OS X 10.2.8(upgraded from 10.2.4)) has a recurring but intermittent issue where it suffers from a kernel panic when waking from sleep.
In the past I managed to fix the issue by resetting PRAM and NVRAM, but this doesn't seem to work anymore.
Things I've found out until now:
- Apple Hardware Test and Techtool Deluxe can't find anything wrong (all tests are passed).
- No kernel panic log is written - apparently the kernel panic occurs before the log can be written.
- Crash appears to be network-related. My IP address and network card address are shown at the bottom of the panic window.
- After restarting, Finder windows revert to a state from two or three days ago...
- Login items aren't the problem. I removed them all - this doesn't make any difference.
- no weird things in the startup items folders, AFAIK.
I'm on the verge of reinstalling OS X, but I think I already did this a couple of years ago, and it didn't help.
Please help.
ThomasNominally, you'd download the OS X Update Combo 10.2.8 after reinstalling 10.2.4, then use Software Update to identify any additional security and other software updates. There was an issue with early builds of 10.2 failing the 10.2.8 udate if done directly, but working fine if one first updated to an intermediate version such as 10.2.6; I think that problem affected 10.2 through 10.2.3 and your 10.2.4 should be good to go directly to 10.2.8, but if there are any problems, you can go back to 10.2.4, then search the Apple Downloads link for 10.2.6, then 10.2.8
With 10.2.x, it's prudent to run Repair Permissions after each OS and security update before moving on to the next. -
Kernel panics on waking from sleep
Hi
I have a problem with my MBP, which is up to date with all the latest OSX and firmware updates as far as I can tell.
Quite often - at least once a day on average - the computer will go into a kernel panic on waking from sleep. It's not every time, and I haven't noticed any pattern in terms of battery state or whether it's connected to the power adaptor.
The computer wakes, and responds to keyboard/trackpad for about 2-3 seconds before grey comes down the screen and I get the box asking me to restart the computer.
I didn't have this problem before 10.5.6 although I did have some more minor problems with an earlier version (10.5.4 I think).
Does anybody have any idea what might be causing this? Could it be anything to do with using an external HD networked to my router for Time machine backups?
Thanks
julianThe problem seems to have become less frequent since I installed 10.5.7 and (ii) turned off automatic Time Machine backups to the NAS. I now just run TM manually when I know the computer is going to be on for a while.

[SOLVED] Question about /etc/fstab, systemd and lvm.
Hi,
something happens which I cannot explain:
At the beginning of my boot process it's taking 10 seconds to wait for a device by UUID, but this very UUID is not listed in my /etc/fstab. Afterwards the boot process succeeds without any errors. Why does this happen? Has systemd its own service for mounting (my old) devices?
I'm running lvm on luks and changed the size of my swap partition a few days back. That resulted in a new UUID and I edited /etc/fstab accordingly.
Maybe I just overlooked something trivial in my setup, but anything besides /etc/fstab in use to mount partitions into the filesystem would be new to me.

It still waits 10 seconds for a depreciated UUID, even though I have nowhere specified this UUID.
I didn't find much information on systemd on that matter either.

Systemd doesn't seem to load swap. It loads /home however, whose UUID has changed as well.
Could it be that systemd tries to do so using the initial UUID?
EDIT: No, it doesn't either:
$ cat /run/systemd/generator/home.mount

[Mount]

Any ideas or a direction?

Greetings,
I'm using systemd as default init system and before I'm buying a solid state disk, I want to know some information about the boot time with my hdd, so I installed bootchart from the AUR. The wiki says, I should add init=/bin/bootchartd to the kernel line of the menu.lst grub file. But because I'm already using systemd, the kernel line has already init=/bin/systemd at its end. Is it possible to use both systemd and bootchart? I know there's also another way (putting it into /etc/rc.sysinit), but I would like to prevent that, because the wiki disadvises to do it.
Regards,
NilsIf you look through the systemd thread here, there are instructions. Basically, install bootchart2 and enable its service, if I remember correctly.

Systemd and Webcam and Suspension on Lid Closing
Yesterday I finally switched to systemd and two problems came along.
The first one is that my computer now suspends when I close the lid. The screen goes dark and I have to hit buttons, this didn't happen before. Oh, now that I write this post I remember that there was an xscreensaver update, and maybe it could be related.
The second one is that the webcam light now turns on randomly at times. I might be going paranoid, but I just don't like it, I feel like I'm being spied on. I am sure no Kernel update caused this too. How can I blacklist/rmmod my webcam driver/module? I don't know how to find it, and because I'm on a laptop I can't remove it. I could tape it, but I'm looking for a cleaner solution.
Any ideas? Thank you in advance.
After some testing, I discovered that the webcam light is turned on ONLY when I get back from a "suspension". So, the issues are related.
Last edited by ephan (2012-10-21 09:31:30)derhamster wrote:
For the first one: Its probably not related to xscreensaver. Check
/etc/systemd/logind.conf
and
man 5 logind.conf
That worked, thanks a lot!
However, I can't start "xinit" on tty1 now. It says (davidarch is my hostname):
davidarch login: [OK] Started Network Manager.
Starting WPA Supplicant
[OK] Started WPA Supplicant
And then it just sits there and I have to start X on tty2.
Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks. -
Hi.
I just installed pure systemd and is working ok... I'm using plymouth with that and... plymouth is working ok when booting but plymouth is not working when rebooting or shutingdown PC, why ?
I'm using nvidia drivers with v86d to get plymouth to work and I have added it to mkinitcpio.conf and rebuilded mkinitcpio. I have enabled gdm-plymouth.service to start gdm automatic...
any ideas why plymouth not working when rebooting ?
thanks,I'm starting plymouth with mkinitcpio.cong not from systemd because I can't find right service to start it...
