Systemd and Xorg.bin hog CPU

I've been getting this problem for a couple months now.
When I switch TTY from Xorg session (and back), it completely freezes and I have to wait about a minute to regain control. Only SysRq shortcuts work. Sometimes it stays black and flickering and I have to kill it with hardware switch.
Here I've captured the freeze in ksysguard (after it partially started responding):
There's no obvious error in dmesg, only this at boot (but that's likely unrelated):

and also:

There's however another condition when it freezes in exactly the same way - when a USB keyboard or USB hub is attached or detached.
That happens when I dock the laptop, or take it from dock. If I put it in asleep and power it on, I can just as well restart it, for it'll no way be usable.

(There's a lot of red lines in this message).
After that, the CPU remains hogged and xorg unresponsive for some time. Eventually mouse starts moving and all is good.
Also related, sometimes the USB keyboard completely stops responding, and I have to replug it - which triggers this whole event, of course.
Here's my kernel:
Linux x201 3.17.6-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Dec 7 23:43:32 UTC 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux
I tried LTS but it brought even more problems.
It's laptop Lenovo ThinkPad x201, 64bit, with Intel graphics.
I'll be grateful for any help about this, it's huge buttpain.
I think it's a relatively new thing, must be something about the 3.17 kernel and 217 systemd.
Please any ideas what can I try to fix it? I don't want to reinstall.

What do I run as root? If you mean LXDM, it's started by a systemd service that came with it.

  • After installing 10.5.6, finder and quicklook server hog cpu for 10 minutes

    I installed 10.5.6. Now upon every restart the Finder and Quick Look Server use 60-80% of my cpu for 5-10 minutes. This means that I can't really do anything until these processes are done because they cause constant delays. This did not happen in the previous version of Leopard, and if it's intentional on the part of Apple, it's a mistake. Very very annoying. Any ideas how to get this to stop?

    stuartwgibson,
    How did you install 10.5.6?
    If you used "Software Update," you might want to try installing the Mac OS X 10.5.6 Combo Update.

  • Mail and safari hogging cpu - corrupt preferences?

    I am having a major problem when I run Mail or Safari under Mavericks on my iMac - they hog all the CPU making it hard to do other things unless I keep quitting the Mail Web Content or Safari Web Content processes using Activity Monitor. This also has shown up in other discussions on this board and no one seems to have a resolution to the problem. But the curious thing is that I only have the problem on my older iMac, but on my new MacBook Pro that also runs Mavericks, runs Mail with identical settings (and is accessing the same server) and runs Safari with the same bookmarks there is no problem. So the problem must be with something on my iMac that is causing Mail and Safari to keep running these Web Content processes and taking over the CPU.
    In the old days I would have assumed it was a corrupt Preferences file and deleted that, but no one has sugggested this. Is this possible? If so, what should be deleted?

    While everything had been working fine, this morning I installed the latest update to the operating system and I am back with the same problem (although I am only having Mail Web Content hogging the CPU and not Safari Web content this time).  I am posting below some information from the log as you suggested (sorry if it is too much but I don't know what you are looking for). Let me know if there is anything else you need. Thanks for the help LInc.

  • Windowserver suddenly hogs cpu with Lightroom and Photoshop

    I recently upgraded these software packages to 64bit and upgraded NIK plugins for each to the 64bit versions. Since then I've had problems with PS freezing while making adjustments using a NIK plugin (doesn't appear to be plug-in specific). Looking at the Activity Monitor I see windowserver up to 90+ cpu usage. Sometimes if I just wait it will recover, sometimes I have to shut everything down.
    Anyone seeing this problem while using this software and if so have you found a remedy? This never happened while using the 32bit versions of all these packages.

    My understanding is that windowserver is an OS X application independent of software used. My question is whether others have seen windowserver start hogging CPU time while this specific software was being used and any Mac remedies that solve the issue. It's not an Adobe question.

  • Safari hogging CPU and won't run

    Sorry for posting here, but I couldn't find the Safar for windows section.
    I run WinXP (fully up to date), with 2Gb RAM, (with one 1Gb on my gfx card), 1.8Ghz processor
    Having updated to the latest Safari I'm finding that it hogs CPU so much so that when I select a page from the top sites screen my PC locks up and I have to use the application manager to kill Safari.
    The same thing happens when I try to go to a website just by typing into the address bar.
    Anyone having similar issues, or able to help me out as to how to fix it?
    Thanks

    Try turning off plug-ins, java, javascript
    Empty history, caches, etc or go to where XP would store the application temp files, in Windows Vista/7 that is AppData\Local and \Roaming
    Disable or turn off extensions, 3rd party can break with any Safari update
    make sure you have current Flash etc
    I'd stick to Firefox or something - use NoScript, HTTPS Everywhere, FlashBlock, etc.

  • Launchd and UserEventAgent hogging CPU

    I've just taken delivery of a new MBPr for work and wanted to set up a second user account to keep my personal stuff separate.
    When I log into this account, within minutes the fans start whirring, even though no programmes are running. According to Activity Monitor, launchd and UserEventAgent are using 77% and 48% of the cpu respectively.
    When I log out, the problem goes away. I've tried deleting and the account and starting again, but to no avail.
    Can anyone help?

    Look at Applications -> Utilities -> Console
    Chances are a launch daemon is trying to start and keeps dying, so it is launch again, and again, and again, ....
    The Console should show the logs where you should see a repeating log entry for the failing daemon or launch agent.

  • [SOLVED]Problem with systemd and awesome wm

    Hello,
    I recently have installed systemd and I have enabled slim.service, but after logging in throught slim I cannot run any programs in my awesome wm. Well, actually I can, but only a few seconds after login. If I run xterm and then try to run a program throught it I get messages "no protocol specified" and "cannot open display :0.0". If I quit awesome/X and login again(without reboot) all works just fine. Could you please help me to solve this problem? Thank you in advance.

    Okay, it is working fine now I have uninstalled initscripts and installed sysvcompat.
    NOTE: before uninstalling initscripts and sysvinit, reboot your computer with init=/bin/systemd in your kernel cmdline, because you will not be able to shutdown properly due to the lack of inittab.

  • Systemd --user can't create cpu cgroup

    Hi,
    recently I've started using 'systemd --user' to manage my sessions. I've followed the wiki and created xorg.service and several others. Then I configured cgroup controllers in /etc/systemd/{system.conf,logind.conf,user.conf} as follows (only relevant changes are shown):
    $ logind.conf
    [Login]
    Controllers=cpu memory blkio
    ResetControllers=
    $ system.conf
    [Manager]
    DefaultControllers=cpu memory blkio
    #JoinControllers=cpu,cpuacct,cpuset net_cls,net_prio
    $ user.conf
    [Manager]
    DefaultControllers=cpu memory blkio
    When I start 'systemd --user', I get the following error (systemd starts fine, but cpu controller for user isn't created):
    Failed to create cgroup cpu:/user/lahwaacz/8/systemd-11815/xorg.service: Permission denied
    edit: the error shows up for every service started, not just for xorg.service
    I guess this is why the default is 'ResetControllers=cpu', but haven't found anything specific to the error. Anyone has experiences with similar issues, or anything helpful?
    Thanks

    I found a fix online that removing the SIP information will fix the issue.  It did but when I do that they have no control over their phone from Lync.
    Hi,
    would you please elaborate about the message above you provided? Did "SIP information" mean user profile?
    If yes, it maybe the issue of address book sync. you can try to force Lync to immediately download the address book with the following way:
    execute the following command from the Windows Command Prompt run as an administrator;
    reg add HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync /v GalDownloadInitialDelay /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

  • [SOLVED] Cannot start X: Xorg.bin blocked for more than 120 seconds

    I just rebooted my desktop after a couple of months and now I cannot run Xorg. When I run startx, I get a black screen for two minutes and then a backtrace pops up. At that point I can no longer interact with the console, but I can still ssh and run commands. I've tried setting Xwrapper.conf to needs_root_rights = yes and I have tried just running startx as root, with no help. I'm not sure how to isolate what would have broken this as I have updated so many packages in the last two months. Any ideas what I can try next?
    If it helps, I am using the open source ati driver and my xorg.conf.d is empty.
    Here is the dmesg showing the oops and the backtrace:

    I do not see any errors in my Xorg.0.log file, but I've posted it here

    Ok, so I tried unplugging my HDMI monitor and that seems to prevent the hang. When I plug the monitor back in and try to have it detect, it hangs again. I tried connecting via DVI (desktop)-HDMI (monitor) cable instead and have the same issue. I wonder if my monitor is causing the issue (it is pretty flaky, taking several tries to turn it on,) although I find it odd that a bad monitor would cause the driver to hang. Maybe the monitor is not sending the right data to the driver to set the mode. I'll try to find another monitor and see if that resolves the issue.

  • [SOLVED]systemd and make a camera visible GUI-wise in your filemanager

    After reading a lot about systemd in the wiki and in this forum I understand there are different opionons about systemd. Anyway, I have a adapted all the changes to rc.conf leaving out only a few daemons to start there. So why not give systemd a try? If you dont want to read the full posting I finally got it to work, basically by reading carefully and checking the suggested tests in the systemd wiki. (loginctl)
    As suggested by the wiki, I tried the systemd yesterday. Enabled via systemctl some services to "replace" my rc.conf daemons. I got what I thought everything to work, including autologin directly to my Xfce4 desktop. Everything except the digital camera.
    When starting Arch traditionally via initscripts I immediately can see the camera in the filemanager (Nautilus) when the camera is attached via USB.
    Some minutes later, after adding "init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd" to the APPEND line in Syslinux and rebooting, my machine reboots
    fine.But when connecting the camera again it is not visible graphically.
    The camera is there because when using gphoto2 (the commandline) as root I can transfer pictures etc.
    Even if I am no happy CLI user I can handle it when necessary. Handling pictures a graphical view of them is much easier...
    As the wiki about systemd says one can try it out. I have not removed anything from the system and when starting Arch again, the initscript way, I can see the camera again in my filemanager, gthumb works again and pictures can be transferred to my machine.
    In the wiki again, this time about digital cameras
    Permission issues
    Camera devices should be granted permission using ACLs. For this to work, users need to have consolekit or systemd running and the user session must be registered with them accordingly.
    Check this using /usr/bin/ck-list-sessions to verify a value of "TRUE" should be returned for both the "active" and "is-local" fields:
    $ ck-list-sessions | grep TRUE
    active = TRUE
    is-local = TRUE
    ACL=Atlantic Container Line is what first comes into my mind. I have had some connections to transport business...I admit I had to google it to find the correct interpretation of this mumbo-jumbo.
    The wiki also gives a "hint", if this is not working try to use the obsolete camera group and edit some udev rules.
    Should not be necessary when it has worked before systemd and earlier experiences
    But what is this about "Permission issues"?  Here is my listings relative the wiki hints. All seems OK.. or why the heck are there two sessions??
    [leif@krasaki ~]$ ck-list-sessions | grep TRUE
    is-local = TRUE
    active = TRUE
    is-local = TRUE
    [leif@krasaki ~]$ ck-list-sessions
    Session1:
    unix-user = '1000'
    realname = '(null)'
    seat = 'Seat1'
    session-type = ''
    active = FALSE
    x11-display = ''
    x11-display-device = ''
    display-device = '/dev/tty1'
    remote-host-name = ''
    is-local = TRUE
    on-since = '2012-10-24T07:12:56.499847Z'
    login-session-id = '1'
    idle-since-hint = '2012-10-24T07:13:26.994037Z'
    Session2:
    unix-user = '1000'
    realname = '(null)'
    seat = 'Seat1'
    session-type = ''
    active = TRUE
    x11-display = ':0'
    x11-display-device = '/dev/tty7'
    display-device = '/dev/tty1'
    remote-host-name = ''
    is-local = TRUE
    on-since = '2012-10-24T07:13:02.361157Z'
    login-session-id = '1'
    [leif@krasaki ~]$
    As one can see, the ACTIVE values are here as the wiki says. But no camera. Those values are the same, wheter which way the machine is started. But 2 sessions??
    Further reading in the systemd wiki article and consolekit vs systemd.logind gives a clue.
    From the wiki:
    In order to check the status of your user session, you can use loginctl. To see if your user session is properly set up, check if the following command contains Active=yes. All polkit actions like suspending the system or mounting external drives with Udisks should then work automatically.
    So when started via systemd and running logintctl, it gives this surprising result. Does not matter wheter as normal user, nor as root....
    [leif@krasaki ~]$ loginctl
    SESSION UID USER SEAT
    1 1000 leif seat0
    1 sessions listed.
    [leif@krasaki ~]$ loginctl show-session 1

    Surprising? Should it not have been Active=Yes? So something is wrong in my settings although it had worked "before" starting using systemd..
    OK, so far. Lost? Not yet. Double check again everything and I found the culprit, my  ~/.bash_profile which had worked before seemed a bit different to what is suggested in the wiki. The old one, actually started 2 sessions, as also could be seen here above checking ck-list-sessions. That was the problem
    Using a fresh edited ~/.bash_profile as suggested here, the camera is visible graphically
    Finally, just for fun, start again the old initscipt way. Enabling daemon and so on. Still 2 sessions going on....Here it was the "/.xinitrc, which also had some old fashions and I removed the ck-launch-session from the exec line. So even here, now only 1 session..
    Anyway, now the camera is visible, both starting with initscripts, naturally also some daemons active in rc.conf and by starting with systemd.
    I rest my case and it seems systemd works with everything on my machine which is just a normal desktop used by an old man.
    Thanks for reading...

    Solved now! Boot times are as fast as posssible on my HDD I think. Only thing after uninstalling initscripst and initscripts-systemd was that locale was not set inspite of a correct /etc/locale.conf. I had to make /etc/profile.d/locale.sh with this content;
    if [ -s /etc/locale.conf ]; then
    . /etc/locale.conf

  • Systemd and systemd-logind crash due to failed assertion

    Hi,
    my system is currently only semi-usable because systemd *and* systemd-logind seem to be aborting due to a failed assertion. All systemd- and socket-related programs do not work. There are many zombie processes. These problems started after a reboot. (To be precise, the system hung up probably because of some graphics driver/mesa-related bug and I pushed the reset button.)
    I previously had testing and community-testing enabled, but disabling them did not fix the issue. Also, I was running a custom 3.17 kernel before the reboot but the normal 3.16.4, the testing 3.17.1 and the linux-ck-ivybridge 3.16.6 (from repo-ck) kernels also don't work.
    /usr is not on a seperate partition.
    One bug should have been fixed upstream (here) and the other "disappeared" (there).
    Pacman logs are cluttered with my attempts to fix the problem by reinstalling some packages (systemd, dbus, linux) so I didn't include them, but nothing important was upgraded right before the problem appeared.
    The relevant log lines in short:
    systemd[1]: Assertion 'a >= 0 && a < _JOB_TYPE_MAX_MERGING' failed at src/core/job.c:314, function job_type_lookup_merge(). Aborting.

    I worked around the issue myself by manually commenting the offending assertions out in src/core/job.c, so this is an upstream bug. I will report it at the systemd bug tracker.

  • ITunes 10.5 has three processes that hog CPU 100%

    Since I updated iTunes to 10.5, there are three proceses that hog the CPU to 100% and everything comes to a screaching slow mode. These are APSDaemon.exe, MDCrashReportTool.exe, and AppleMobileDeviceSerivce.exe. Even when I close iTunes, these processes keep running and continue to hog the CPU.
    I am running Window XP on an IBM (Lenovo) Thinkpad T60 machine with 2GB Ram and T2500CPU @ 2.00GHz.
    What are these processing doing that takes so much CPU poawer. Before iTunes and iPad updates, they use to function properly.

    When I called Apple Support to ask about the 100%  CPU usage, they wanted to charge me because my Ipod was out of warranty.  I insisted on talking to someone and finally got to talk to a software engineer for free.  He said that he had never heard of the problem in his three years at Apple.  Nonetheless, he sounded really interested and suggested that it might be a conflict with anti-virus software.   I deleted the antiviruse and that DID NOT HELP AT ALL.
    It seems as if Apple could care less.    There is no official response.   Their primary response is to look at the Forum.   At least you find out that the problem isn't your fault, it really is Apple!!!!
    So far the best solution is just to delete iTunes and use Mediamonkey to sync your pod.
    Apple, please fix this!!!!!

  • Xorg.bin use a lot of ram Catalyst

    Hello! After installing catalyst from Violo's repo i have noticed that Xorg.bin use a lot of ram(when i start the laptop it is 25mb but it keep rising till it get to 1.5gb in about 2h and I restart to free memory) This is on X-server 1.7 and now i downgrade to 1.16.4 but no effect. Can someone help me please. Thank you!

    elll wrote:Do you know how to downgrade catalyst? Should i use pacman -U catalyst? [link]https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … s#Warnings[/link] And if yes do i have to downgrade Xorg too because i allready do that?
    The nicer way to do this is to use the [catalyst-stable-14.X] repository databases in this manner (where you replace X with the corresponding number):
    [catalyst-stable-14.X]
    Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst/$arch
    elll wrote:Does someone know how to fix this issue or if there will be released fix for this?
    No idea. Ask the AMD Developers upstream.

  • [SOLVED] systemd, systemd-journal constantly at high CPU %age

    Hi all,
    I've switched a computer to systemd, and everything works nicely. The system is responsive and booting is even faster than before. Yay!
    However, both my CPU cores are constantly between 80% and 90%. When I do top in a terminal, I see systemd constantly in the 90%-100% range and systemd-journal in the 60%-100% range, also continuously. My CPU temperature is a lot higher than normal as well (currently at 61.0C)
    Is this normal?

    I'm having a similar problem.  I temporarily fixed it by replacing the cupsd.conf with the cupsd.con.default.  Everything ran great, got the printer configured again, journald stopped thrashing my precious SSD by producing millions of these warnings (I didn't wc them, but I was probably getting thousands every second) and all was well.  Until I "shared" the printer again.  Immediately cupsd got locked into restarting thousands of times every second, once again thrashing my cpu and SSD.
    Edit:
    I guess I should probably share my cupsd.conf.  I didn't manually edit it, I used the web interface:
    cat /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
    LogLevel warn
    SystemGroup sys root
    # Allow remote access
    Port 631
    Listen /var/run/cups/cups.sock

    Edit02:
    I should mention that I tried the fix described here:  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146154
    Deiderick:  Have you "shared" your printer?  I suspect that this may be what is causing the problem.
    To Mods:  At this point, because the OP's problem has been resolved, and this thread is marked "solved" should I make a new thread?  It is possible that my problem is not identical to the OP's.
    As a side note, I ran "journalctl | wc -l"  it took about a minute of maxing out one core to finish.  The final number:  1232889.   I have a feeling that this reflects only a fraction of the warnings that cups produced, seeing as I only allocated limited hd space for journal messages.
    Edit03:  After re-reading the etiquette thread, I've decided to start a new thread.  This one is marked "solved" and although very similar, it may not be exactly the same problem that I am having.

  • Systemd and slim on tty7 ?

    Systemd and slim works fine except that X is on tty2, I'd like it to start in tty7 or maybe tty4. I have tried to add tty7 and vt7 respectively to the Execstart line;
    [Service]
    ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/slim -nodaemon
    in /etc/systemd/system/graphical.target.wants/slim.service. The complete slim.service looks like this;

    There's no problem with tty1 and as I understand, tty3 and 4 is socket activated when needed, they work ok here.
    Google and manuals or wiki doesn't enlighten me and so how do one create more ttys and get slim/X to tty7?

    The info is also available on the SLIM wiki page for future reference.
