Systemd graphical.target leads to black screen

Using a pure systemd setup, I'm trying to boot directly to a display manager.
If I enable the gdm, slim, or lightdm services, the system will drop to a black screen after boot.  This does not seem to be an "empty screen," but rather that the system is shutting off my laptop screen.
To regain control of the system, I must reboot and add "systemd.unit=mutli-user.target" to the boot command and drop down to the terminal.  From there I can either call "systemctl start display-manager.service" or "systemctl isolate graphical.target" successfully and boot into any of the display managers.
My graphics hardware is an AMD r600 chipset on the FOSS drivers.
I haven't been able to find any messages in any logs (xorg, dmesg, journalctl, etc.) that mention why this is happening.

No ideas whatsoever?  I've googled all over the damn place, read through lots and lots of forums that are almost helpful.  I'm at a loss here.
What would cause something to not work when it's at the end of the systemd boot process but work fine when run from the command line?

  • Linux-lts leads to black screen on rebooting even for linux (solved)

I'd like to mention a problem I faced when trying linux-lts (kernel 3.14). I had the "linux" kernel installed (4.0). If someone has an idea on what happened, please share.
    sudo pacman -S linux-lts
    , then
    grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
, reboot, choose the lts-kernel. I can login to the desktop (lxde, lxqt and i3 are all working). Then reboot, pick any of linux or linux-lts kernels. And here the problem starts: black screen.
I tried to debug the booting process by following https://wiki.freedesktop.org/www/Softwa … Debugging/. I couldn't resolve anything.
By luck I thought "what if it's the login manager (lxdm) that's black?", and so I tried to aim at the middle of the screen with the mouse on the 100% black screen, I entered my password and "boom" I was on the lxqt desktop!
I rebooted, same problem. But by trying to guess where the password box was, I could login to my desktop. To fix the problem at first, I did remove linux-lts, reinstalled linux with pacman, removed lxdm and its systemd service, installed sddm and enabled its service, regenerated the grub.cfg file. Rebooting worked, no black screen.
At that point I thought "well it might just have been lxdm not working well with linux-lts so let's try to install it again, since now I have sddm". Huge mistake... After reinstalling linux-lts, booting in it, rebooting lead again to a black screen on boot up. This time however trying to aim at the box to enter my password was impossible: I was not used to sddm so I didn't know where to click. I tried the "tab" key around 20 times, entering my password each time, without success. So I ended up using the live Arch.iso version on a usb flash drive to remove the linux-lts, sddm (yeah I went for lxdm again), etc. by chrooting. This worked again: no more black screen.
The irony is that I installed that kernel thinking of increasing the stability of Arch on my laptop. It ended up breaking the booting process of both kernels!
And since I want to understand Linux in general, I am posting this in hopes that it could help someone else facing this problem and also in hopes that someone can explain me what could have happened. Because as of now I don't understand how lxdm and sddm could appear black in both kernels when rebooting from the linux-lts kernel.
    Thanks for any pointer.

OK just to confirm that enabling the testing repository solved the problem for me as well.
These were the updated packages (excluding dbus which I manually upgraded before enabling the repo):
    Targets (18): device-mapper-2.02.98-3  filesystem-2012.12-1  isl-0.11-1  libpulse-2.99.2-1  libquvi-0.4.1-2  libssh2-1.4.3-1  linux-3.6.9-1
                  linux-headers-3.6.9-1  lua-5.2.1-2  lua51-5.1.5-3  lvm2-2.02.98-3  mkinitcpio-0.12.0-1  nmap-6.25-2  pulseaudio-2.99.2-1  talloc-2.0.8-1
                  vlc-2.0.4-5  xorg-server-1.13.0.901-1  xorg-server-common-1.13.0.901-1
It might be any of those but most likely could be either the kernel or xorg-server* (just for future reference).
    Cheers, Elisiano

Win 7/Z580: Black screen on boot up, before login screen?
    =======================================
I find some interesting posting in this forum. Thanks for keeping this forum to help windows/Lenovo community. I like to pick up the brain of this forum to resolve the black screen issue. I am not sure, whether it caused by virus. I use Microsoft Security Essentials. I am not able to run this in command prompt.
I started my laptop this morning & login screen showed up. Once I entered my login credentials, I heard the sound that usually plays once a login is successful, but I ended up with a black screen. After this occurred, I had to hold down the power button to manually shut down the computer. Once I started it up again, I was prompted to do a system repair, which eventually ended up with all successful outcomes, but I now have a black screen with a cursor before the login screen now. I have no idea what caused this to happen. My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad Model Z580 (500 GB HD, 6GB RAM).
I am not able to get into safe mode or any other mode, which all leads to a black screen described above. I am able to use the "Repair Your computer" tools after pressing F8 during booting only . All other options leads to Black screen with cursor in the middle
Last Known Good Configuration leads to same
Enable Low Resolution Video (640x480) leads to same My Z580 is not responding to CTRL+ALT+DEL Windows Logo keys as well.
**** I tried SAFE Mode. It loaded couple of drivers and paused at CLASSPNP.SYS load. It went to Black screen with cursor at center.
I am able to invoke control pannel from Command prompt of working PC by typing control.
Z580 PC is not responding to control from command prompt (under Repair Your computer)  either.
Z580 is able to use the "Repair Your computer" tools after pressing F8 during booting .
Under local user login it provided Start Repair option. As I pick this option, I got the following. Problem signature
    Startup repair offline
    1 - 6.1.7600.16385
    2 -
    6.1.7600.16385

    7 - NoRootCause
    os v - 6.1.7600.2.1.0.2561
    locale id – 1033
Under Admin user login, it provided system recovery options. It is not picking up the recovery point created a while ago.
Windows Memory Diagnostics is not launching and shows a black screen without cursor.
I am able to get into command prompt. I tried the following there.
I am not able to run cmd as admin

I did findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt I will be glad to attach the zip file that contain CBS.LOG & [SR] tag extract (xxx.txt).
I did not any find ERRORS there, SFC ended with message saying "found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them" . It is misleading. There is no [SR] tag pointing to corrupt files. Does SFC through false positive like this?

  • R9 270x Gaming 2G with B84-G43 Gaming Black Screen running win 8.1

    Hi,
My system was win 7, upgrade to win 8.1 clean install with AMD Catalyst™ 14.4 for a day then problem occur the same way which many are having "Black Screen" even restart in normal mode but not to Safe Mode.
so i decide to downgrade the system to win 7 clean install, with no display driver install/update "Microsoft Standard VGA Graphic Adapter" in high resolution the system work fine but not with MSI Graphics Driver 13.101, "Black Screen' occur during driver installation detecting VGA card.
which i believe got to be some bios malfunction during the upgrading OS & Driver. by following here i attach the link below as technical details for assistance in advance for this troubleshooting.
here is the picture for the S/N

    Thanks.

even i tried it on downgrade and upgrade motherboard bios for both OS by getting a clean/clear default setting.
    by using these method, clean OS installation with each of these driver "AMD Catalyst™ 14.4, MSI Graphics Driver 13.101, and the older link by previous post" and on-board vga as main display output;
OS win7 as a result the MSI Graphics driver both version successfully install, process for reboot after the installation of the driver and log into desktop "Black Screen" meanwhile the AMD Catalyst™ 14.4 "Black Screen" during the installation of detecting VGA card.

  • MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition (Black Screen / Reboot)

    Hi everyone !
    Here's my computer specs :
    CPU: Intel I7 870 (2.93 Ghz)
MoBo: Micro ATX from my Dell XPS Studio 8000
    Memory: 6Go DDR 667 Mhz
    PSU: Corsair HX750(w)
    Windows 7 Pro 64 Bits
    My problem :
80% of my games (Crysis 1 & 2, Bulletstorm,...) & benchs (3DMark 11, MSI Kombustor, ...) crashes after few seconds. My graphic card goes off, black screen, and then my computer automatically reboot. I've tried another PSU, same pb, and my Corsair HX750 is new. So I wonder if the problem is from my graphics card or my (dell) motherboard ? But my config has the minimum required by MSI.
    My temporary solution
After few tests with differents drivers, I've try to change the Core Voltage, no result... So I decided to downclock the GPU freqs.
In order to have something stable to 100%, and be able to run all the games and benchs, i've to downclock the GPU like :
    Core Clock : 600 Mhz (Original : 772 Mhz)
    Shader Clock : 1200 Mhz (Original : 1544 Mhz)
    Memory Clock : 1730 Mhz (Original : 2004 Mhz)
    Its a big loss frequency!
Hope a new bios will come out to fix the bug.

have you tried MSI's drivers for your card?
    ==> http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N580GTX-Lightning-Xtreme-Edition.html#/?div=Driver&os=All
Remove current driver with >>Driver Sweeper<< in 'Safe Mode' before install the new one

It's only unstable when i'm use the GPU (Games & benchs), not HD videos.
Most games/bench crashes with default clock @ 1.031v. I tried to overvolted & undervolted the GPU, but my tests were not conclusive. The only way i've found to have all games/benchs stable is to downclock the GPU as I explained in my first post.
Maybe i need a more accurate GPU voltage ? Is it important to change Memory & Aux voltage too ?
have you tested with 1050mV for core?

Is it important to change Memory & Aux voltage too ?
normally not, but depend what exactly is unstable
But it should work fine by default as is

  • [SOLVED] linux-3.13.6-1 and systemd-210-3 causes black screen

My computer boots into total black screen after recent update, including linux-3.13.6-1, xf86-video-intel-2.99.910-1 and systemd-210-3.  I have tried all combinations of rollback, I find  linux-3.12.7-2  + systemd-208-2 resolves my problem.
As I dig on, I find it a problem with systemd-backlight. With running kernel-3.13 and systemd-{210,211},  disabling systemd-backlight service either through kernel parameter systemd.restore_state=0 or by masking systemd-backlight service can fix my problem.
Still, I am not the only one experiencing black screen and unresponsive X input with 3.13 kernel: several radeon user seem to have similar phenomenon but cannot be fixed by disabling backlight restore.  I would suspect restoring backlight is just one of many ways to trigger this issue, I not experienced in kernel, but I will try to debug the problem. Help will be appreciated.
There seems nothing wrong with X, but a problem with power management.

Hello! I seem to be having a similar problem to what is being discussed here. So I figured I would add what is going on with me.
I will try to keep it short but I apologize in advance for it being a bit long.
Hardware: 2006 Imac with Radeon mobility x1600
For me there was no problem before the systemd upgrade to 210 and the upgrade to 211 did not fix the problem of black screen on boot.
Also I upgraded my kernel from 3.13.5-1 to 3.13.6-1 after the problem with systemd started.
Downgrading systemd to 208.10 ( the kernel had been upgraded already) got the system working properly again.
I have since gone back to 211 and have found that:
If I wait for 5 - 10 minutes after the computer boots when I move the mouse the screen wakes up and I can unlock the screen and the computer works as normal.
Note: I am using gdm and gnome3. I think from this that my problem is a brightness/screen not being turned on issue?
If I add nomodeset to the kernel boot parameters the computer works but the Radeon drivers are not loaded.
and after booting with nomodeset if I use "sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1" my computer screen blacks and I have no response.
With both 210 and 211 I can press ctrl+alt+F2 type my username and password into the blind and give commands like "sudo reboot followed by the password" blindly to the computer and the computer will execute them.
I hope that this can be fixed soon... It is annoying at best.
    EDIT
I tried  "sudo modprobe radeon modeset=1" again and found that I can press ctrl+alt+F2 and get a terminal login prompt that I can use and see! Although gdm login/gnome is still a black screen...

  • [Xorg] Black screen with 2nd graphic card

    Hi !
I'm a french (Sorry for my English) and new on ArchLinux.
I have a problem with my laptop, he have 2 graphics cards, the first one is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD4200 series and the second it's an ATI Radeon HD 5650.
The problem is when I want to use the second card,  I have a black screen when I start X. It's the same problem with ATI driver and xf86-video-ati driver even if my card is detected with "lspci" and by "aticonfig --list-adapters" with catalyst driver.
If you need, this is my Xorg log :
    Xorg.log with catalyst
    Xorg.log with free driver
And if you want  my xorg.conf , very basic.
    Thanks for your help.

    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 6#p1133766 FGLRX Configuration
I use one card and found I needed catalyst-dkms pkg as well as catalyst & catalyst-utils
    Hope this helps.

  • Black screen on startup - Radeon graphics driver or EDID issue?

Having installed Arch, I am only able to boot into Linux (console mode) when I pass the option "nomodeset" in GRUB to disable KMS. If I try to boot with KMS enabled then the screen goes black almost immediately upon boot. There appears to be no further activity from the system: I can't even reboot using CTRL-ALT-DEL. Nor is there any log activity that I can find. The system appears to just hang.
My graphics card is a Radeon 9200. From a general websearch, other people have reported a similar issue with this card on other distros, but the "solution" they get is usually "it now works with the updated version of $(DISTRO)". My next move should probably be to try the Catalyst driver, but there's one other thing that suggests to me that the problem is more to do with the monitor (specifically, with the EDID provision) than the driver....
Running "vbeinfo" at the GRUB command line shows the default resolution as 1280x1024x32. When I run "vbetest" at the GRUB command line, I initially get the graphics test pattern displayed correctly. However, when I press enter to end that test pattern I don't return to the GRUB command line. Instead I get a black screen with a blinking white cursor. No input from the keyboard is displayed if I type, but pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot does work from here.
I've looked at the section on the Wiki about Forcing Modes and EDID, but this area's still very much a mystery to me, and the Wiki itself says that this secition is still "a WIP". I guess I'm just wondering if, from the behaviour above, if the problem with using KMS is due to an issue with the graphics card itself or if I should be trying to generate my own custom EDID file, which sounds painful . Passing the built-in resolution 1280x1024 via the drm_kms_helper.edid_firmware option, as suggested on the Wiki, made no difference in behaviour at all. Trying to pass 1024x768 in the same way did make snowy artefacts appear on the monitor, but didn't get me to a point where the system appeared any closer to actually booting up.
Any advice would be appreciated. I've currently got the X running fine using the VESA driver (no custom Xorg.conf file needed), but it's more than a little slow. I'd like to have 2D acceleration available at the very least.

If its a laptop, your screen brightness might be getting set to 0 on boot. If so, try attaching an external monitor to test the theory and set the brightness from a terminal.
    export DISPLAY=:0
    xbacklight -set 100
Unfortunately it's a desktop with a flat-screen monitor; VGA cable connection. The only information on model that I have is from the monitors' configuration menu:  "Dell E248WFP".
More detail on the graphics card: "lspci|grep VGA" gives "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (rev 01)"

  • Black screen after login while on battery with graphics switching enabled

Getting a black screen after entering my password while logging into my account while on battery with graphics switching enabled. Everything is up and running, I just can't see it.
I can log into the guest account on battery
I can log into my account while plugged into power
I can log into my account on battery if graphics switching is disabled
I believe something that is starting up in my account is causing the system to switch from integrated to discrete graphics on login, and that switch isn't working correctly on battery power.
As a work around for now, I can run with graphics switching disabled, but I'd like to solve this so I get longer battery life.
    MacBook Pro Retina 15"
    Mountain Lion
    All updates applied

I had the same issue and managed to reslove it.
    Shut down your machine.
Power it back on while holding the 'shift' key (left or right, doesn't matter)
You will see a greay progress bar go across the screen while you boot in to 'safe boot'
Once booted, login, and go to Energy Saver and turn on 'Automatic Graphics Switching'.
Reboot back in to normal mode, and you should be able to log back in and see again.
I did this without being plugged into AC power.
    Hope it helps!
    Cheers!

  • Intel hd graphics, black screen on tty switch and more

    Hi,
This is my first post on the arch forums, after having used this wonderful distro for half a year. I look forward to being a more active user in the future.
Last week, my laptop HD crashed and i had to re-install arch on a new one. With this came the 3.14 kernel, which I had been holding back at 13.12 previously.
At first I expected something was off with the KMS, but now I am not sure anymore. I can start the system just fine, problems arise when I try to start X, then the screen goes black. Same problem arises if i issue lspci (odd huh?). If I use vgaswitcheroo to switch to the discrete readon, and then back again I can start X and issue lspci just fine. When X is started, I cannot turn it off again (black screen), or change into a vc (same black screen).
I realize this is little to go on, but I would greatly appreciate pointers to what the problem could be and where to look for useful log/debugging information.
    Graphics hardware:
    Intel hd 3000
    Mobility Radeon hd 5470

I downgraded to 3.12. Now everything works like a charm, but I wouldn't call downgrading a fix. I am still open for suggestions.

You should go into the "Display" settings in the Win 7 control panel and have a thorough look through all the settings available there!

I hope you have a backup if you don't want to lose your iPad contents. You have to restore the iPad now using iTunes on your computer. That's what the message on the screen means.
    Take a look at this.

  • Safari has no graphics just a black screen

Safari has no graphics just a black screen,
This is from launch, the button and window frame are ok but the text look a bit odd on the bookmark bar and the url field is black and the content of the window are just black. I have reinstalled it with a fresh copy from apple.
    Help

This is from launch, the button and window frame are ok but the text look a bit odd on the bookmark bar and the url field is black and the content of the window are just black.
Okay ... that is usually caused by a problem that also makes the iTunes Store go black too. So even though Drgoo's post about fixing it in the following post is about fixing the iTunes issue, fingers crossed it should also help with your Safari problem too:

  • Boot Camp Windows 7 Black Screen After Graphic Driver Installation

    Hi,
I have MacBook air (2012 model i think). I tried to install windows 7 64 bit using bootcamp. On the first windows boot and before installing boot camp drivers windows was fine. After installing bootcamp drivers and windows restart the windows came up to a black screen and stuck forever. When I uninstall graphic driver (intel HD 4000), windows is good again. Tried to reinstall different graphic drivers versions - didn't work. searched internet everywhere and didn't find any solution.
    please help!

I have solved this issue now but seem to have encountered another one. I solved the above issue simply by keep on trying time and time again, partitioning the hard drive and trying to install windows 7.
Anyway, I have encountered this error: windows setup could not apply the configuration set. The WINDOWS folder cannot be found.
    Please help!

  • Onboard and PCI-E Graphics shows blinking black screen on 8.1

I have a homebrewed 3rd Gen Core i5 on an Intel DQ77MK motherboard which has onboard graphics. I also have an nVidia Quadro FX 3500 PCI-E graphics cards.
The Quadro has two DVI outputs connected to two monitors, I connected a third to the onboard graphics. So I have three monitors.
This worked fine with Windows 7. I go to install windows 8.1 and I turned off auto-updates and all the auto device driver junk. I installed the Intel drivers and the nVidia Drivers and three monitors working fine. I go to update to grab a package to remove
that stupid "SecureBoot isn't configured properly" watermark and I reboot to black screens with a cursor and nothing else. I reboot to the BIOS and turn off the integrated graphics and I can get back in - but I really want my triple monitors.

black screens with a cursor and nothing else.
So, if there is a cursor, it's not really "black", just blank.  But to be really clear "cursor" means an underscore at the top of the screen, or something else?  I have seen the former myself but don't really know what it means.  Also it has
only happened occasionally and I can't remember whether it shows on both of my monitors when it happens?  I think that when I have seen that I have had to unplug some other USB devices to get past that symptom.  E.g. my usual tricks with Win-P or
Ctrl-Alt-Delete or Shift-F10 etc. did nothing--no beeps and no drive light activity.
A reason that it could be important to know if the underscore appears on all monitors is that sometimes the boot seems to get confused about which monitor is primary, so if both monitors have different attributes (as mine do) then perhaps the symptom
could be understood as the wrong monitor getting the controls that were meant for another?
reboot to the BIOS and turn off the integrated graphics and I can get back in
That sounds like a driver problem but I don't know for which component, e.g. WinPE? Boot Manager?  OS?  So instead of doing that have you tried using the Advanced Boot Option to use low resolution video (AKA VGA mode)?  The BCD allows even
other video related settings.  While you are having problems it would be a good idea to turn on the Boot menu prompt, even if you don't have multiple partitions to boot, just to make it easier to use those options.  FWIW a surprise for me when I
tried this is that we are not restricted to what drivers the OS can use later.  E.g. I just used Win-P once in the OS and could make everything work normally after that.
Another thing that you could try is tracing your boot activity with xbootmgr and then finding out what is different for your two cases.
    Good luck

  • HP Pavilion DV3 41700-EE Problem-Black Screen after installing graphic card driver

    Hi,
Laptop Model : HP Pavilion DV3 41700-EE Entertainment series.
I download the latest official driver for my lap top from this link : http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-93326-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&...
After the installation i rebooted my device and after the windows loading i got a black screen ! i went to safe mode and unistall the video card and also it's driver from device manager and when i came back the black screen was gone but i have only my onboard Integ graphic which is very slow.
also i went to AMD web site and get AMD Catalyst from their web site but nothing happened after the installation and i think they don't provide an appropriate driver for my lap top.
i also tries to go to device manager and with right click on my display adapter and update driver point to the display driver location on my syste but this time it does not take time the black screen after restart, and in the middle of installation i got a black screen.
Also i upgraded my BIOS Firmware from 16 to 24, but nothing changed.
i just wanna know is it a software problem or hardware problem ? how can i find out that ?
also i don't want this switchy manner and i don't care about the power efficency. i just want to my device work on maximum performance.
What you suggest i do ?

Use the recovery manager to reinstall the original AMD graphics driver and Catalyst Control center.
