Systemd journal size

On the top line of journalctl output, I see
Oct 22 17:31:50 caddywhompus systemd-journal[203]: Allowing runtime journal files to grow to 197.8M.
I want to reduce this upper limit.  I checked the manpage of journald.conf and the setting I wanted seemed to be RuntimeMaxFIleSize.  However, according to the selfsame manpage, the default size would play out to ~72MB*.  So, I'm wondering if I've got this all wrong or something...
* The default of RuntimeMaxFileSize is 1/8 the value of [RuntimeMaxUse], which defaults to 10% of the fs.  My /var is on a 5.8GB partition, so my calculation was:
(0.1 * 5.8GB) / 8 = 72.5MB

Doh, had a mild dyslexic episode or something.  I had it right in my head, I swear!   But thanks for setting me straight.
In any case, the defaults for System<blah> are the same as their Runtime alternatives.  And, probably important to mention, all settings are at defaults.

  • Journal size in systemd

    This would seem to indicate that there has been some sort of size control in effect since the logs only go back to Feb 23 and I've only used the defaults.  This isn't anywhere near the supposed 10% of filesystem limit default (I'm assuming that is calculated from the size of the partition and not the entire device, so it should be 19G=1.9G), so I'm not sure what to make of it.

  • Journalwatch - Minimal log watcher/notifier for the systemd journal

    Inspired by a blogpost I started a small project: A tool similiar to logwatch/logcheck, but much more KISS, and working with the systemd journal. It's written using Python3.
    Git repository
    AUR package (journalwatch)
    PyPi page
    The configuration is very simple: You define patterns for log messages you're not interested in, like this:
    _SYSTEMD_UNIT = systemd-logind.service
    New session [a-z]?\d+ of user \w+\.
    Removed session [a-z]?\d+\.
    SYSLOG_IDENTIFIER = /(CROND|crond)/
    pam_unix\(crond:session\): session (opened|closed) for user \w+
    \(\w+\) CMD .*
    Then if anything happens which is not filtered by your patterns, you get a mail (or the lines printed on stdout).
    From the README:
    journalwatch is a tool which can find error messages in the systemd journal.
    It is similiar to tools like logwatch/logcheck except it's much more KISS and only works with the systemd journal. It works by defining patterns to match all log lines which are not interesting, and then prints all log lines not matching those patterns (or sends them by mail).
    When you start it the first time, it'll write the default pattern and config to $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/.config/journalwatch ($XDG_CONFIG_HOME is your home if unset). Details on how to configure journalwatch are available in these files.
    Feedback of any kind is very welcome!

    Hello mate, a good while ago I started working on automated self adapting log analyser. I wanted something that will read audited logs and learn system patterns so during normal operation it would raise alert each time something unusual happens. I wanted this to be done in C (just a thought that C is much easier than C++ to do things right even though I'm very far to call myself a proper programmer).
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/intelligentloganalyser/
    (in progress, when busy time at day work is over I'm finishing that project off)

  • [SOLVED] systemd, systemd-journal constantly at high CPU %age

    Hi all,
    I've switched a computer to systemd, and everything works nicely. The system is responsive and booting is even faster than before. Yay!
    However, both my CPU cores are constantly between 80% and 90%. When I do top in a terminal, I see systemd constantly in the 90%-100% range and systemd-journal in the 60%-100% range, also continuously. My CPU temperature is a lot higher than normal as well (currently at 61.0C)
    Is this normal?

    I'm having a similar problem.  I temporarily fixed it by replacing the cupsd.conf with the cupsd.con.default.  Everything ran great, got the printer configured again, journald stopped thrashing my precious SSD by producing millions of these warnings (I didn't wc them, but I was probably getting thousands every second) and all was well.  Until I "shared" the printer again.  Immediately cupsd got locked into restarting thousands of times every second, once again thrashing my cpu and SSD.
    Edit:
    I guess I should probably share my cupsd.conf.  I didn't manually edit it, I used the web interface:
    cat /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

    Edit02:
    I should mention that I tried the fix described here:  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146154
    Deiderick:  Have you "shared" your printer?  I suspect that this may be what is causing the problem.
    To Mods:  At this point, because the OP's problem has been resolved, and this thread is marked "solved" should I make a new thread?  It is possible that my problem is not identical to the OP's.
    As a side note, I ran "journalctl | wc -l"  it took about a minute of maxing out one core to finish.  The final number:  1232889.   I have a feeling that this reflects only a fraction of the warnings that cups produced, seeing as I only allocated limited hd space for journal messages.
    Edit03:  After re-reading the etiquette thread, I've decided to start a new thread.  This one is marked "solved" and although very similar, it may not be exactly the same problem that I am having.

  • [Solved] Systemd journal in conjunction with syslog-ng?

    The wiki has this item:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … log_daemon
    I'm just wondering what that is all about. Is that for causing systemd to be the source of syslog log entries rather than syslog?
    I don't really see the point of this, and don't want to be double-logging everything. I'm happy with the systemd journal (for now). Should I just shut down syslog-ng? I assume the command is "systemctl disable syslog-ng.service"?

    Did you make sure syslog does not show up in your rc.conf "daemons" array? That was what was screwing me up. You can tell if syslog is still operating by doing a "systemctl list-units".

  • [solved] systemd-journal and shadow.pacnew updates

    After a recent install and update I have come across the same issue described here where the user was recommended to ignore and erase some .pacnew files. My update generated the following:
    /etc/dhcpcd.conf.pacnew
    /etc/group.pacnew
    /etc/passwd.pacnew
    /etc/shadow.pacnew
    /etc/gshadow.pacnew
    The first, dhcpcd, seemed sensible enough and I incorporated the changes. The latter four all share the following characteristics:
    1. Removed mentions of systemd-journal-remote and systemd-journal-upload. I'm not sure why so I left those records in place.
    2. Changed a few permissions here or there, which i incorporated into /etc/group and /etc/password.
    3. Changed the default shell for a few users; these changes I incorporated.
    I was unable to open /etc/shadow or /etc/gshadow in write mode so I've left these files. Perhaps that's fine because the thread mentioned above says so. However, there's no explanation of why or where this information was obtained (or ordained!)
    Is it fine to leave these two files? Why have syssystemd-journal-remote and systemd-journal-upload been omitted?

    The steps you took look quite sane to me.
    These groups are not in the defaults provided by filesystem (e.g. I don't have them). see the edit
    Apparently systemd creates system groups and users on it's own, see 'man systemd-sysusers'. Do you know / can figure out why these groups are created in the first place ? not important in this case, see the edit as well
    FYI e.g.: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/41717
    The filesystem package provides those files as defaults (group, passwd, shadow, gshadow amongst otheres). However there are some packages that actually add additional groups they need (like ntp e.g.). The filesystem package cannot know about these. Therefor it's likely to have more groups in your local installation than in the .pacnew files you get.
    The same applies for manually created users and groups of course.
    If needed see the man pages for explanations of the respective files (e.g. 'man group').
    Edit: Ok, I see that after an update I have them as well, so these are apparently new systemd groups and users. I think the rest I said above is still valid, so leaving those in place was the right thing to do.

    In the Newbie Corner of the forums, there are a few stickied threads that are recommended reads.  One of which is this one.
    If the logs are not too too much, then it can be posted here with code tags. If it is crazy big, pastebin it and then post the link.
    If this is really all the information it gives about the journal being nuts, then you might want to enable debug levels of logging for the journal and then see if you can gather more information that way.  This can either by done by using a drop-in snippet to the unit file, or by turning on debug levels for the entire system from the kernel command line.
    The journal is not designed in such a way that it can be continously written to.  There are safeguards in place to ensure that masively spamming services are cut off after a certain number of log messages in a given timeframe.  Additionally, even the flush from the journal in RAM to the disk is only done periodically.

  • [SOLVED] Journal size limit

    Hello,
    I added a size limit for the journal according to the Wiki
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … size_limit
    But during boot I'm getting the following message:
    systemd-journald[161]: [/etc/systemd/journald.conf:18] Failed to parse size value, ignoring: 50MB
    What is the problem?
    Thanks!

    The problem is a little typo you've made.
    It should be 50M, not 50MB

  • [SOLVED] Systemd journal not preserved through reboot

    It appears that my journal in /var/log/journal is being flushed just before reboot. Every time I view the journal with the --all flag, the furthest back I can go is to right before the last reboot or power-off. Moreover, my /var/log/journal directory seems incapable of growing bigger than 2.6Mb or so, even though I have the journal configured to max out at 50Mb.
    Here's my /etc/journald.conf:

    Also of free space and that will trump SystemMaxUse. I know because it happens on my system. As /var fills, systemd keeps smaller persistent journal records.
    EDIT:
    SystemMaxUse= and RuntimeMaxUse= control how much disk space the
               journal may use up at maximum. Defaults to 10% of the size of the respective file system.  SystemKeepFree= and
               RuntimeKeepFree= control how much disk space the journal shall always leave free for other uses if less than the disk space
               configured in SystemMaxUse= and RuntimeMaxUse= is available. Defaults to 15% of the size of the respective file system.
               SystemMaxFileSize= and RuntimeMaxFileSize= control how large individual journal files may grow at maximum.
    Strictly speaking this seems inaccurate, though. You have more than the value of SystemMaxUse available so SystemKeepFree should not apply. However, it does.

  • Tip regarding the "systemd[1]: Failed to start Journal Service" error

    Just a tip regarding the well-known
    systemd[1]: Failed to start Journal Service
    error (which I ran into last weekend) to maybe save one or two among you a couple of hours of your time:
    The error is described here https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151012 as well as in several other threads in other language boards / in other forums etc. It is usually (as in the linked thread) 'solved' by reinstalling the system - good old Windows magic, also useful when dealing with systemd.
    The Problem with this error is that you do not get into your system. Instead, systemd will print you the mentioned "Failed to start Journal Service" error message a couple of million times. There are also no logs that you could retrieve (when booting from a livesystem) and that would give you any helpful hints, since journal is systemd's logging service, old-style system logs are not kept, and the dmesg log doesn't survive the reboot with default settings.
    As pointed out in the above mentioned thread, you will see a few more instructive error messages when adding 'emergency' to the kernel line in the bootloader config.
    Now there may be plenty of reasons why the systemd journal service might not work. The most common and most annoying, however, appears to be this one:
    In this case you will see that the problem actually lies in
    systemd[1]: Cannot open /etc/machine-id: No such file or directory
    Now, 'man machine-id' reveals that "the /etc/machine-id file contains the unique machine id of the local system that is set during installation. (...) The machine ID is usually generated from a random source (...)". It is obviously perfectly justified to refuse to boot the system because an absolutely insignificant random number is missing. As far as systemd is concerned anyway.
    Usually, it seems, the /etc/machine-id is set by /usr/bin/systemd-machine-id-setup during installation or system upgrade. It is not documented anywhere that this is a rather important step and that you should better check if this was or was not actually done before rebooting. Obviously (but for no apparent reasons) systemd fails to run this (or to run this successfully) sometimes.
    Also to be recommended: Always retain (back up) your old kernel and initramfs and edit your bootloader config appropriately to be able to boot with your old kernel again ... just to have one or two options left to get back into the system in case of running into an unpleasant surprise from the side of systemd or other packages.
    The solution is, obviously, to create this file /etc/machine-id ... You probably want to do that from a livesystem (if you want to try it from the emergency shell, you would need to remount / (i.e. root) as rw and hope that systemd will not punish you for that) by just running the program that was designed for creating this file manually:  /usr/bin/systemd-machine-id-setup
    http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.s … devel/7528 states that it might also work with merely creating the file 'touch /etc/machine-id'. Though I didn't try that since I had enough fun with systemd for one week and didn't want to break my system again just to see if that works.

    Jristz wrote:
    ackalker wrote:Sorry for necrobumping this.
    Generating the machine-id in a consistent way is very important when working with KVM and containers, where the machine-id can be set for the VM or container. See `man systemd-machine-id-setup`.
    Again, _don't_ just put some random UUID in there, especially not in the systemd package install script, this makes provisioning Arch Linux containers a PITA.
    If you thing that the way that arch is handlynbg the machine-id is wrong or can be improved, then file a bug.
    He already did.
    Jristz wrote:Anyway, I thing if reinstalling systemd package or if systemd have a command to reinitialize the machine-id file.
    Like so many of your posts, I had to read this a half dozen times before it made any sense. I think you're hinting at the utility that ackalker already pointed out in the post you're replying to. And, if you read the install scriptlet, you wouldn't need to think about whether or not reinstalling would be an option. You would know that it isn't.

  • [SOLVED] Problems with systemd's journal when using syslog() in C

    Hi,
    I have a problem with journalctl and syslog output within a C program:
    When I use journalctl in follow mode:
      $ journalctl -f
    and I run the folowing program in another terminal
    #include <stdio.h>
    #include <syslog.h>
    int main()
    FILE *pf;
    int i;
    /* logging made in file /var/log/syslog */
    openlog("martins",LOG_CONS,LOG_USER);
    pf = fopen("not_here","r");
    if (!pf)
    syslog(LOG_ERR | LOG_USER,"oops -- %m\n");
    return 0;
    no syslog error message appears in the journal.
    But, when I modify the programm by adding a 'sleep(1);' right before 'return 0;'
    there is a correct error message shown in the journal.
    Is this a bug in systemd? Or do I understand something wrong with systemd's journal?
    I'm actually running
    linux-3.10-12-1-lts
    systemd 207
    with a 32Bit installation
    Thanks for any hints,
    Martin

    Now, I understand what's going on:
    1) There is an known issue about a race condition in journald when the logging process exits. In this case the message isn't assigned to the user whose process generated the message.
    2) Apparently the group of the journal files have been changed from 'adm' to 'systemd-journal' in Arch Linux around April 2013.
    But still I only have been member of 'adm' as described in the journal tutorial on http://0pointer.de/blog/projects/journalctl.html. So I  can only see syslog messages, which are correctly assigned to my own user account. The messages with the race condition, as mentioned above, have been invisible to me.
    After joining to the new right group again:
      $ sudo usermod -d G  martin systemd-journal
    I also see the syslog messaes just before exiting the process again :-).

  • [systemd] shutdown takes a long time

    Hello.
    It takes quite a long time for my system to shutdown. The systemd ArchWiki suggests to log the shutdown like this. I am not quite sure what to look for. I suspect that smplayer or deluged might be the problem. Am I right and furthermore what can I do about it?

    Should I file a bug report? If so, with Arch or upstream?

  • Systemd and systemd-logind crash due to failed assertion

    Hi,
    my system is currently only semi-usable because systemd *and* systemd-logind seem to be aborting due to a failed assertion. All systemd- and socket-related programs do not work. There are many zombie processes. These problems started after a reboot. (To be precise, the system hung up probably because of some graphics driver/mesa-related bug and I pushed the reset button.)
    I previously had testing and community-testing enabled, but disabling them did not fix the issue. Also, I was running a custom 3.17 kernel before the reboot but the normal 3.16.4, the testing 3.17.1 and the linux-ck-ivybridge 3.16.6 (from repo-ck) kernels also don't work.
    /usr is not on a seperate partition.
    One bug should have been fixed upstream (here) and the other "disappeared" (there).
    Pacman logs are cluttered with my attempts to fix the problem by reinstalling some packages (systemd, dbus, linux) so I didn't include them, but nothing important was upgraded right before the problem appeared.
    The relevant log lines in short:
    systemd[1]: Assertion 'a >= 0 && a < _JOB_TYPE_MAX_MERGING' failed at src/core/job.c:314, function job_type_lookup_merge(). Aborting.
