[Systemd] Very long boot time

I have a very long boot time with my Arch.
Startup finished in 828766ms (kernel) + 63430ms (userspace) = 892196ms
Especially after login into gnome, it takes quite a while until the desktop is visible. In meanwhile, I only see the wallpaper.  Does anyone has a suggestion how to fix that?

  • Macbook Pro 15inch Early 2011 very long boot time, Macbook Pro 15inch Early 2011 very long boot time

    I have the macbook pro early 2011 15inch. i7 processor, 500gb hard drive, and 4gb ram and have Moutain lion installed. The computer takes a good minute to boot to the login screen and then probably another 30 - 45 seconds to actually login and be able to do stuff on the desktop.
    The comptuer has plenty of hard drive space, about 370gb. I dont think it should be taking this long for my comptuer to boot up. What can I do to make this boot time faster? (I am currently looking to get an ssd but that wont be for a while untill i get the money) So what can I do in the meantime to help it boot faster?

    First go to Disk Utility and verify disk and repair if needed then repair permissions. Do you have any antivirus installed? Then go through all of your apps and check to make sure they are compatible using www.roaringapps.com. I guarantee it is an incompatible app or antivirus causing the issue. Also, look at Thomas A Reeds, Understanding Upgrade Nightmares article, http://www.reedcorner.net/understanding-upgrade-nightmares/

    Wow, that solved this problem. I had 5 GB of systemd logs. I deleted them (after making a backup on another disk), I limited the journal size to only 50MB, and now NetworkManager only lasts 4 seconds to start, and GDM appears 10 seconds earlier. Thanks a lot

        Feb 17, 2015, 05:36:32 PM    Self test - passed

    Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
    Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
    Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
    The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    Shut down from safe mode. Same problem?
    After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Long boot time since last security update?

    I updated my father's mac mini over Christmas with the latest security update and ever since then it seems to have a very long boot up time....seems to vary between 5-45 mins ?
    Once booted everything works fine and as normal - just the boot process takes a long time.
    Has anybody else experienced this?

    I would have suspected a drive issue if the bootup seemed to delay in the blue screen phase, since at that stage it's reading from the drive, but during the grey screen, aside from checking components and data integrity, it hasn't got that far.
    You can, of course, check the drive manually using Disk Utility. That will certainly find any errors if you click on 'verify disk' (you can't select 'repair disk' for the drive you booted from), and indicate possible failure by anything other than SMART status showing as verified.

  • Windows partition ignored by macos, long boot times

    So, after boot camp refused to resize my Windows partition, I decided to use the old standby of using GParted off of a linux live cd. I just kinda assumed there would be no problem, but after the fact I've discovered there could be some problems. The most specific thing I can find is that the "msftrees" flag will be set on the partition you make and that it can also cause some trouble with updating the GPT and MBR.
    Anyway, here are my symptoms:
    1. MacOS pretty much ignores the Windows partition (It's Windows 7). It doesn't appear in the startup menu at all and I don't have access to the drive. You might be able to mount it manually, I haven't tried.
    2. Very slow boot times for windows. You can select the option to boot from the Windows partition by holding down option at boot, but the boot takes a very long time. When you select the windows partition, it goes to a blank screen with a blinking underscore character in the upper left for 2~3 minutes and then finally shows the windows loading screen and continues to boot normally.
    Here is my partition layout:
    * Report for internal hard disk *
    Current GPT partition table:
    # Start LBA End LBA Type
    1 40 409639 EFI System (FAT)
    2 409640 560668499 Mac OS X HFS+
    3 560668500 625137344 MS Reserved
    Current MBR partition table:
    # A Start LBA End LBA Type
    1 1 409639 ee EFI Protective
    2 409640 560668499 af Mac OS X HFS+
    3 * 560668500 625137344 07 NTFS/HPFS
    MBR contents:
    Boot Code: Unknown, but bootable
    Partition at LBA 40:
    Boot Code: None (Non-system disk message)
    File System: FAT32
    Listed in GPT as partition 1, type EFI System (FAT)
    Partition at LBA 409640:
    Boot Code: None
    File System: HFS Extended (HFS+)
    Listed in GPT as partition 2, type Mac OS X HFS+
    Listed in MBR as partition 2, type af Mac OS X HFS+
    Partition at LBA 560668500:
    Boot Code: Windows BOOTMGR (Vista)
    File System: NTFS
    Listed in GPT as partition 3, type MS Reserved
    Listed in MBR as partition 3, type 07 NTFS/HPFS, active
    Thanks in advance.

  • MacBook pro Extremely long booting time After 10.10.1 + strange icons when booting

    Hi all,
    since the Yosemite update and the sequential patch, I've been experiencing lots and lots of issues with this releade
    I posses a
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)
    2,5 GHz Intel Core i5
    After a week after the Yosemite update my Mac just froze, and for a couple of days I was unable to access it. after 4 attempts of Clean install i was finally able to restore it. but the issue with long booting time and free after sleep/wake action are the same .
    I'm experiencing strange icons during boot as follows:
    Only after a second reboot and clearing ram with Cmd+Alt+P+R i'm able to get rid of this , and the reboot shows this
    That after 5 mins changes into this
    This routine keeps happening, every single time i have to restart my mac.
    Any suggestions?
    tnks

    Well , i guess i a HDD issue, when i was experiencing the initial issues with yosemite , I've installed the system an external Hdd and everything was working fine.
    So i guess my suspicions were correct. I have to change my hdd.

  • Very long publishing times

    Hi,
    since a week know I'm facing problems with very long publishing times.
    I also get error messages during publishing which tell me that the "target server failed to respond".
    Are there any known issues?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Best regards
    Felix

    If the disk is getting hit VERY hard during the GC, then it is possible that your system is thrash its page file. What else is running besides the Java process? If the total RAM size (not including page file) is smaller than the working set (which during GC basically includes the entire JVM heap) the system will hopelessly thrash.
    You probably need a smaller heap, fewer other processes running or more RAM.

    Hello everyone. I'm using Arch Linux x86_64 with LXDE. My spec is Celeron G1610 with normal HDD drive. I know it is not the SSD but can i improve boot time?
    Systemd-analyze:

    And blame:

    I think it boots pretty fast as it is.
    You can see how it compares to others https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=147841
    Times like https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 4#p1300124 are possible on SSDs.
    When posting configs, code or command output, please use [ code ] tags, not [ quote ] tags https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode
    like this
    It makes the code more readable and - in case of longer listings - more convenient to scroll through.

  • Very Very long ping time, only on arch, and preload doesn't work

    Arch is the most amazing Linux system I have ever used. I get like a 30 second boot time from start to finish, i'm just wowed.
    I am using arch64, and have only 2 problems!
    1. I have like a 32ms ping, for any site, toooo big. I have a 3com NIC card which Is currently being used as eth1, and an nvidia network controller on my board eth0. The nvidia controller doesn't work right, so i am using the 3com, with a huge ping time
    2. preload isn't working. I have 3gb of RAM, and AMAZINGLY only 400mb of RAM is being used, with 9 tabs in firefox open, compiz-fusion, gnome desktop. DAMN! I want more RAM being used, what is wrong with this?? (the problem is that things start up a little slow, so it must mean it is not staying in the RAM)
    Please tell me what I can do to fix these problems!
    EDIT: Could it have something to do with the groups I am in, or the preload.conf settings, or the rc.conf file?

    I saw your latency thingy... though that aint so bad
    PING fk-in-f147.google.com (209.85.129.147) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from fk-in-f147.google.com (209.85.129.147): icmp_seq=1 ttl=242 time=146 ms
    Pinging from norway to... wherever that node is.
    and compare that to a norwegian host
    PING www.sau.no (194.63.248.23) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from web.domeneshop.no (194.63.248.23): icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=86.6 ms
    all in all, you should not be so annoyed unless your used to sub 10 ms ofc.. but this is still very quick for a webhost, atleast i think so.

  • Intermittently nursery GC is taking very long pause time

    Hi,
    I have jboss application server running with JRockit R27.6.5 on RedHat Linux. I see that the nursery GC is taking very long time. Some times it takes more than 10 seconds. This causes TLA-fetch error for all the threads.
    High nursery time -
    [memory ][Sun Jul 10 23:10:18 2011][05730] 23340.903: parallel nursery GC 3270701K->3100453K (6144000K), 2740.705 ms
    Usual nursery time -
    [memory ][Sun Jul 10 23:27:23 2011][05730] 24368.799: parallel nursery GC 4361524K->4191033K (6144000K), 63.751 ms
    This behavior is puzzling because it was working fine till last week. We have two applications running on this server which are totally different in nature but we see the same behaviour wrt nursery GC. This high nursery GC is happening even when there is absolutely no load on the server. It is happening every 10 minutes or so.
    Infact we thought that this is something to do with hardware and we replaced it with new but we see the same behavior on the new hardware.
    We have given 6GB RAM to one server and 3.5GB RAM to another server. The machine is 24 cpu.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply.
    I would expect fragmentation of memory would happen over a period of time. I am also facing this problem on other servers with large heap.
    But this is different. Below are JVM settings for two servers running on the same machine.
    JAVA_OPTION="-Xms${6000}m -Xmx${6000}m -Xgc:gencon -Xverbosetimestamp -Xverbose:memory,cpuinfo,opt -Xgcpause -Xgcreport -Xmanagement:ssl=false,authenticate=false -Djrockit.managementserver.port=7090"
    JAVA_OPTION="-Xms${3500}m -Xmx${3500}m -Xgc:gencon -Xverbosetimestamp -Xverbose:memory,cpuinfo,opt -Xgcpause -Xgcreport
    The nursery pause time is high right after the server restart. Most of the time its fine but intermittently there is a spike. Sometimes spike goes all the way upto 10 seconds.

  • Very very long execution time

    hi,
    working with 10g XE
    new_header table has 9749 rows and consist of two column : itemsets and codes like that
    AST:GLU:KREA:Na:IBIL, 2380. codes starts from 1 to 9749
    when I run belows pl/sql codes, it takes very long time in fact it can not be complete without error
    declare
    cnt1 number(15) ;
    cnt2 number(15) ;
    itemset1 varchar(800) ;
    itemset2 varchar2(800) ;
    begin
    select max(codes) into cnt1 from new_header ;
    cnt2 := cnt1 ;
    for f in 1..cnt1 loop --cnt1 loop
    for l in 1..cnt2 loop --cnt2 loop
    itemset1 := 'AST:GLU:KREA:Na:TBIL:IBIL' ; ---given for exeample
    --select itemsets into itemset1 from new_header where codes = f ;
    insert into k1
    select REGEXP_SUBSTR (itemset1,'[^:]+', 1, level)
    from dual
    connect by level <= length(regexp_replace(itemset1 ,'[^:]*'))+1 ;
    select itemsets into itemset2 from new_header where codes = l ;
    insert into k2
    select REGEXP_SUBSTR (itemset2,'[^:]+', 1, level)
    from dual
    connect by level <= length(regexp_replace(itemset2 ,'[^:]*'))+1 ;*/
    check_it ;
    commit ;
    end loop ;
    end loop ;
    dbms_output.put_line(myres.count) ;
    end ;
    I wanto to get each part of itemset1 seperated by : k1 global temporary table has one column varchar2 will be used in check_it procudere to compare with a table values. please give me some advice urgent..what can i do. what can I use instead of regexp_substr or any idea..thanks..

    The regexp_substr isn't the problem.
    The problem is your table has 9749 rows and you're doing this:
    for f in 1..cnt1 loop --cnt1 loop
    for l in 1..cnt2 loop --cnt2 loop
    end loop ;
    end loop ;i.e. you are trying to execute the code in the loops 9749^2 which is roughly 95 million times. And you wonder why its taking a long time.
    I havn't even tried to work out what you are trying to achieve in the rest of the code - maybe you could elaborate.
    I suggest you rethink your approach to the problem though. Oh, and no, it's not urgent.

  • Is it just me, or does mountain lion have more beach balls, longer boot time, and other unexplained weirdness that clears up with a reboot?

    I'm having mixed feelings about Mountain Lion.  On the one hand, I like some of the features that more closely integrate with my iWhatever.  I appreciate having the notes, reminders, imessage, etc that makes it so I can switch from a mobile device to desktop device.
    But on the other hand, I see far more beach balls, such as when simply starting Safari.  Applications take a long time to initialize as they try to, I'm guessing, sync with iCloud.   I get more application hangs.  You know, the ones that leave you dead in the water until you reboot, but then mysteriously vanish for weeks.  and boot time is frustrating.  I spend far more time waiting for my desktop and applications to initialize and stabilize after a login.
    Granted, much of my frustration here is not based in the technical.  It's based on "user experience" where I don't normally pay attention when it's working well. It just feels to me that the behaviour of ML is much more similar to windows of the past, where a reboot once or twice a day cured most ills.
    Is it just me or does anyone else have similar feelings of disappointment.
    thanks!

    Hmmmmm... OK y'all have got me thinking.
    I normally run disk check and repair, this time it found a number of files and links related to printers and image devices, stuff that isn't likely part of the issue.  There were three links, however, related to core graphics.  the permissionss were  rwxr-xr-x when they should be rwxrwxrwx.  I don't think those are involved, but alas they are fixed.
    It seems like much of my issues seems to revolve around the mounting/access of resources outside my laptop, be it icloud, nfs server, samba server, etc. RIght at this moment, Finder is hung hard.  I tried to force restart it, and in the Force quit menu I now see two Finders.  One will kill and restart immediately, one does nothing.   And I can't open a finder window period.
    In fact, just before writing this, I was attempting to edit a text document in StarOffice, and StarOffice went to lunch trying to access my samba share.  Now before y'all go nuts about any samba server side issues, let me say that while my MBP is having issues accessing my samba shares, none of my other computing devices are.  W7 laptop pulls up samba file system as fast as if not faster than it's own local file systems.  My other MBP (older core2 duo, but still on mountain lion) does not seem to have any issues.  I don't believe it a server side issue.
    So I asked myself, what's different on my 2.66 gb i7 MBP??  It just occurred to me that I have one piece of software that's pretty deeply rooted in file system management....   Tuxera NFS.   I see that it has not been updated since updating to Mountain Lion, so I am going to check that out, and will post results.

  • Menu Bar Icons disappear/Long boot times for apps

    This is what my menu bar looks like. Also, it is taking forever for apps to open and boot time is longer than normal. Any Idea what could be the problem? I already deleted any 3rd party app I recently downloaded and deleted all files I recently downloaded as well. Let me know what you all think. Thanks

    I don't think that is the issue, as I do not even have that option in my Desktop & Screen Saver preferences. Below is what I see.
    Also, notice the forward and back arrows in the top let, as well as the + and - icons are missing. This is how all of my windows are. Any other ideas? Any other info I can provide to help?
    Thanks

  • [SOLVED] systemd-fsck prolongs boot time considerably

    Hi folks, I've searched but come up blank on this one...
    I've just migrated fully to systemd and all's working well apart from my boot hanging for around 16 seconds on fsck. Disabling the checks via the final column of fstab reduces my boot to under 9 seconds, which is roughly what it was with initscripts. Boot drive's an SSD, all other partitions on 2 SATA HDDs.
    Here are the relevant parts of fstab
    # /dev/sda3 - Backup
    # ========= ------
    UUID=7e23c7f4-acf6-477c-9705-15ae8870181e /media/Backup ext4 defaults 0 2
    # /dev/sdb2 - ROOT (+/home)
    # ========= ------------
    UUID=ee99e089-a642-41c8-b1f4-5dc80307d438 / ext4 defaults,noatime,discard 0 1
    # /dev/sdc1 - Data
    # ========= ----
    UUID=66c7a8dd-8d92-4353-a4eb-1da425449322 /media/Data ext4 defaults 0 2
    # /dev/sdc2 - Scratch
    # ========= -------
    UUID=a8ca4753-ccca-4360-b702-8c12004bf8f8 /media/Scratch ext4 defaults,noatime 0 2
    # /dev/sdc4 - bootISOs
    # ========= --------
    UUID=eea21a23-b3fa-479d-8a62-2502f4f9edfc /media/bootISOs ext4 defaults,noatime 0 2
    I do have /var on the "Data" partition and a few other relocations...
    /media/Data/var /var none bind 0 0
    /media/Data/logs /home/paul/.logs none bind 0 0
    tmpfs /home/paul/.thumbnails tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noatime 0 0
    tmpfs /home/paul/.Skype/Logs tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noatime 0 0
    tmpfs /media/Data/wine/drive_c/windows/temp tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noatime 0 0
    Without fsck
    $ systemd-analyze
    Startup finished in 1280ms (kernel) + 2220ms (initramfs) + 5112ms (userspace) = 8614ms
    With fsck (typical)
    $ systemd-analyze
    Startup finished in 1276ms (kernel) + 3224ms (initramfs) + 20327ms (userspace) = 24829ms
    Any ideas as to the slowdown or is this to be expected with this many partitions?
    Thanks.

    WorMzy wrote:You can add "noauto,x-systemd.automount" to the options of non-essential partitions. That may speed up your boot time.
    Sorry, I should have mentioned I already tried this with the "Data" partition and just got a permanent hang in the boot sequence.
    Edit: I've had 2 boots where it's not had the delay but I've no idea why, nothing was changed.
    Edit2: Seems I was too quick to dismiss "noauto,x-systemd.automount"... I've applied it to all partitions except "Data" (and root, obviously) and now I'm consistently getting boot times under 9 seconds. Marking this thread as solved. Thanks to all who contributed
