Bug Report: Can't exit system preferences after creating new users
Setting up a brand new Mac Mini (Late 2014) with Yosemite. (Came installed with Yosemite). I got an i7 version with 16GB of ram and a 256GB solid state drive.
When I create a new user (either administrator or regular) and then attempt to exit from the "User and Groups" dialog box under "System Preferences" I get an error message that "System Preferences" is busy and that I have to wait. I tried waiting up to 5 minutes and still cannot close the dialog. The only way to kill the dialog box is to use Force Quit under the Apple menu. After killing the dialog with Force Quit, the newly created account DOES seem to work ok. It shouldn't take more than 5 minutes for Yosemite to simply create the default directories for a new account, so something is clearing getting wedged.
Additional details
This has occurs every time I try and create a new user (and yes I have Administrator privileges).
No other applications (either from Apple or other software publishers) have been installed on this mac.
This occurs whether the new user is set to use an iCloud Password or a Separate Password.
There IS a live wi-fi connection to the Internet.
If I create a second administrator account and then login with that account and attempt to create a new user the same thing happens.
I'm rather shocked to encounter such an obvious bug in the first 5 minutes of using a BRAND NEW Mac.
Any suggestions for how to fix this?I just tested it on my system and cannot replicate your problem. So, I would attribute it to a defective installation and suggest you do the following:
Install or Reinstall Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -
System Preferences Screen Saver Bug
I recently purchased a new iMac running Mountain Lion (previous computer was first gen intel Macbook Pro running Lion) and have noticed that a bug that persisted on my previous computer now exists on my new one!
Essentially, when I browse to the Screen Saver Tab in System Preferences, it says "There was a problem connecting to the server X" which was an old networked computer (which has never been mapped ever to my new iMac) and the prompt refuses to go away until I close system preferences.
I have restored my Pictures, Movies, Music using my previous time machine backup (no migration assistant used) and selecting the previous volume... but I don't know how that would cause the following? (See image):
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!FIXED IT!!!
Ok - so in case anybody else suffers this problem it turned out the iPhoto Library was referencing a folder of files on a (non existant) other computer. This explains why:
1. It always happened when I went into Wallpaper prefs (was looking for these non existent photos)
2. It didn't appear in Disk Utility (because it was within the iPhoto Library package itself (i.e. the database)
3. It happened on a new computer as the iPhoto library was restored from a previous computer.
In order to find this, I troubleshooted by moving the iPhoto Library to desktop (without opening it) and wall/screensaver prefs worked fine. Then, I used terminal and the grep command (screenshot attached) to find where it was referencing "kitch_n_stage" (I.e. the windows share). Then I moved those files to the trash, but the iPhoto library back and opened iPhoto. It had to rebuild the database as I removed the photos folder and the library.adpb file.
The command was grep -lr "name of shared computer" *
(Would suggest backing up your iphoto library before doing this) -
System preferences icon bug?
Hey,
Look at this:
http://tagus.ist.utl.pt/~pedro.nogueira/hum.jpg
You'll surely notice two icons that are wrong! Those on/off switches in place of the Software Update and Startup Disk icons... I made a clean install a few days ago... and I dont think it was like that before... Is it really a bug? Any help?
ThanksHi WeirdFish
I have experienced it with the Printer Pref Pane
1st try:
Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter ~/Library/Caches as the folder's location. When this folder has appeared, move the item com.apple.preferencepanes.cache to the desktop and open System Preferences again.
If that does not work
The Problem is in the SYSTEM > LIBRARY > PREFERENCEPANES
the SharingPref.prefPane needs to be replaced just dragging out is not enough
The only way I could correct it was to copy the Pane from my Bootable Backup Disk

Graphic bug in system preferences
hi. when i open the sys preferences, i always have a graphic bug, with for example the printer icon squared and very big. any solutions? thanks
Try trashing ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. (Quit System Preferences first.) If that doesn't work, try trashing ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache.

Whenever I try to open my System Preferences it takes a long time to think about it then crashes, below is the error report.
Also noticed that Safari opens automatically when I turn my Macbook on. About 6 weeks ago I had trouble with the Macbook picking up our wireless connection at home so I went and fiddled with some things in System Preferences (ill-advised as I know nothing about these things) so have I just unticked something important or do I have a bug? Any help is appreciated!

Still can't open System Preference still crashes and cannot be opened. Whenever I spend too long looking around in the Users/yourname/Library/Preferences folder the whole Macbook freezes and I have to force switch it off.
The reason I asked about QuickLook is because there's something in the Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ called com.apple.quicklookdaemon.plist that keeps returning evening when you trash it. Thought this might be suspicious. -
(noob) Where to file a bug of OS X 10.6 System Preferences?
Hi there,
I found a bug in my system preferences. I'm using the german localization and the UI in the preference pane "energy" is broken. Where shall I file this bug so that Apple can fix this?
To view the broken UI click here: http://skitch.com/yaun/dys8j/bildschirmfoto-2010-04-26-um-23.17.04
Thanks for your help.Tach,
you can use the official feedback site over here:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
If you are an ADC member (free membership is sufficient) you can submit a bugreport:

I don't know how report a bug in Mac OS X (10.5.3) for this reason I post in this forum.
If I set the language of the system to "Español" (Spanish) since 10.5.2 appear a visual bug in +System Preference+, exactly in *Desktop & Screensaver* with the right scrollbar. This bug doesn't appear if i switch the system language, example, to English.

I've just witnessed something rather interesting: System Preferences is hung and can't be quit, not even force quit. Restarting the system did not work; I'll need to power cycle the machine.
I was trying to view energy saver preferences from the toolbar battery charge indicator.

Janet DavisThanks everyone for trying this out and proving me wrong. After a reboot, I am unable to replicate this issue again. Hopefully it was merely a fluke (though Software rarely has flukes that don't have some underlying reason).
I'm happy this doesn't happen for everyone, or me anymore.
Thanks again! -
System Preferences - screen saver... bug or feature?
10.6.8 MBP
I have a folder which contain several sub folders - the contents of one sub-folder I use as screen saver.
In the System Preference pane for desktop /screen saver I can see the standard options of:
iPhoto
Flagged
Last 12 Months
I don't use iPhoto & the library is empty & I've trashed the associated iPhoto.plist's - therefore when I click the "Flagged" & " Last 12 Months" of course as expected I see the message ' Your selected submissions have no pictures. You can change…. etc"
However if I select the iPhoto box - then the screensaver displays the contents of all the sub-level folders. When it should display the same 'Your subscriptions…' message.
Why?FIXED IT!!!

Odd bug: "keyboard and mouse" within "system preferences" will not open!!
After having to Archive and Re-Install yesterday and installing "X11", I have an odd problem:
- apple+i leads to crashing and restart of "Finder"
- when investigating this I found the "keyboard and mouse" registry in "system preferences" will not open.
Any ideas what could be wrong?
Is there any other remedy short of another Archive and Re-Install?
In the system library I have "Keyboard.prefPane" version 3.13. Clicking on it opens a blank "system preferences" page entitled "keyboard and mouse".
Your help would be greatly appreciated!
PowerBook G4 1.25 GHz Mac OS X (10.4.9)Reinstallation solved the problem.

Blank white System Preferences window
Hello all,
I purchased a secondhand G5 for the purpose of having a second internet station at home (I do most of my work on a late 2008 MBP but we've got multiple people here who like to use the Internet at the same time). When I set up this computer, it was hooked up to an old flat screen monitor (bought when they first came out) the HD was wiped clean, Leopard was installed, the internet was set up and working and everything seemed good to go. However, I wanted to get into the system to change the monitor resolution setting since the type/icons were a little big for my taste.
When I pulled up System Preferences, I got a completely blank white window. This happens every time System Prefs is launched. I can click on this window where normally icons would be, and things seem to happen (the window changes size) but it remains completely white. Moreover, all of the pulldown menus from the top menu bar also are blank white. I can move my mouse down in the File menu where Quit would normally be, and I can click on it and System Preferences quits. If I quit out of System Prefs, the Finder and other software windows act normally. When I log into System Prefs again, same blank white window, same problem.
This blank white window thing also happens with Preview, but I have not noticed it with any other programs on the system (yet).
Here's what I've done to troubleshoot:
Discarded appropriate systempreferences.plist file in the User>Library>Preferences window, also appropriate file in User>Library>Caches. Emptied trash and rebooted. Same problem.
Reinstalled Leopard, 10.5. Tested, same problem. Upgraded with combo pack to 10.5.8, tested, same problem.
Swapped out video card for a known working video card, tested, same problem.
Swapped monitor for known working new monitor, tested, same problem.
Am I missing some other .plist or similar file that should be discarded? Has anyone experienced anything like this and been able to solve it? Would this be due to software issues, or some kind of hardware issue? Because I can't see System Preferences, I can't create a new user account and discard the old one to try and resolve any software issues, my only choice is to do a clean install (which I have done to no avail).
Help? I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks in advance.
RajiWell, at least we are seeing some light here. I forgot about Safe Mode! When I started up into that, I can see the System Preferences windows just fine... it's no longer white, and I can select what I need and make changes.
However, I have done permissions repair from every possible angle (both from HD and DVD), I have reset the PRAM, and I still get a blank Sys Prefs window on normal startup.
The only thing suggested here I have not tried is replacing the PRAM battery (since at the moment, I don't have one). That will be the next angle of attack but I'll have to wait to get one in.
Other than the battery, could this be some kind of peripheral or software conflict?
This is bugging me! I mean really.... it's just an Internet station, but one does want things to work properly nonetheless!
Thanks for the help so far.... ! It has been useful. -
Unable to open AirPort options sheet in Network System Preference
Hi there,
There are several posts (and a Radar bug number, 4273111) reporting a certain difficulty with systems that have been upgraded to Tiger. For some reason: When viewing the AirPort network interface in the Network system preference, certain installations do not allow one to open the "Options" sheet.
To reproduce:
1. Open System Preferences.
2. Click on the Network system preference.
3. Show -> AirPort.
4. Click the "Options" button.
Normally, this should open an options sheet. However, on three separate systems I've encountered that have been upgraded to 10.4.x from earlier versions of Mac OS X (Jaguar to Panther to Tiger), the sheet does not open at all. Console reports the following when the button is clicked:
2006-11-07 09:55:22.206 System Preferences[379] * Assertion failure in -[PreferencesApp _commonBeginModalSessionForWindow:relativeToWindow:modalDelegate:didEndSelector :contextInfo:], AppKit.subproj/NSApplication.m:3057
2006-11-07 09:55:22.229 System Preferences[379] Modal session requires modal window
I've tried replacing the following items (then repairing permissions after each attempt) with a known-good copy from another 10.4.x system (same OS version/build in each case—as of this post, tested through 10.4.8), without effect:
/Applications/System Preferences.app
/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/
/System/Library/PreferencePanes/Network.prefPane
/System/Library/Frameworks/Preferences.framework
I've seen references to a similar error in Safari that was able to be fixed with a reinstall of Safari—apparently, something corrupted in WebKit.framework. I'm presuming something similar would work here (and it's been reported that an Archive and Install will fix the problem, but that's certainly overkill to correct such an issue).
I've got clients that are not happy about this and the problem has apparently been documented for well over a year now. The following Discussions threads cover it as well:
"can't open airport options"
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1125018
"Network system preferences stuck"
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1123291
"Airport Preferred Networks"
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=722797
I'm happy to lend whatever troubleshooting assistance I can, so if anyone else out there can similarly recommend files I might try replacing that I've not already mentioned here, or any other information that could be helpful, I'd certainly appreciate it!
Thanks much,
MBJ
