Systems Preference is deleting an account in my Users

My Users & Groups, in Systems Preference, is "deleting an account" in order to clean this device back to its factory default settings, and its been going on for about 20 hours. How long does it take?  Thanks!

Hi Ralph,
If you're looking to have that second Adobe ID you created completely erased, you'll want to email your request to our Privacy team.  They can explain the risks of doing so.
If you'd like those two accounts merged under a single Adobe ID, our customer service department can help with that: http://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html
Please let me know if there's anything else we can help with!

What are the correct mail account settings and more importantly the correct DNS settings
Thank you for any help you may be able to provide
    Cheers

Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 993
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 587
              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • System Preferences on a Managed Account

I created a log in account for the kids to use.  I turned the parental controls on and made minor restrictions to keep the user from being able to destroy the computer.  However, on that account, I'd like to be able to modify the mouse settings.  But system preferences is not an option under the apple.  How do I, as the administrator, "personalize" the kids' managed account?

Did you set up the account with Simple Finder?
You may not need to restrict things as highly as you did.  A standard non-admin user cannot do anything to wreck global settings, modify other users' stuff, or delete or change anything outside his own files inside his own user account. As long as the kids don't know the password of any admin account there's little to no risk of them breaking anything for anyone else.

  • System preferences crashes only with accounts

ceated a new account now it crashes when I try to change the account in system preferences.  I can't manage them... please help!!

Backup your data to a external drive and disconnect.
Look in your user/Library/Preference folder for a file called
    systempreferences.plist
and drag it to your desktop and reboot.
You'll have to set the preferences for it again.
Also run all the cleaning and maintainence aspects of the free OnyX and reboot.

Should clean your system of any gremlins hopefully.

Are you referring to the actual application in your Applications folder or the icon in the Dock? If the latter simply open your Applications folder, locate the System Preferences application and drag its icon into the Dock. If the former then you have to reinstall it from your OS X Installer DVD:
How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
    • Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • My system preferences got deleted

by mistake i deleted my system preferences and my photo booth also.i have no idea how to put it back!

If you don't have your install disks you can get the 2 gray install disks by calling AppleCare. 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273) They can send them to you for about $16 per disk plus S & H. Just give them your serial number and they'll know which ones you need.
Or if you don't have any files you want to recover from your hard drive you can get Snow Leopard for $29 if you have at least 1gb of RAM and a working DVD drive. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY You would then erase and reformat your hard drive and install Snow Leopard. You won't need the box set unless you want the latest iLife and iWork. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps you can get them from the App Store after you update to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie and Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote and Numbers for $20 each.

  • CAN'T OPEN ACCOUNTS IN THE SYSTEM PREFERENCES, CAN'T OPEN ACCOUNTS IN THE SYSTEM PREFERENCES

i deleted the accounts on the ibook to create a new one for my parenst, but now i cant entern neither one of them, and they are not available fo clicking can someone help??? please!

Hi, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
You can try pressing the Command + s key during startup. This takes you to Single User Mode, where you will see a command line.
Type this when the command-line prompt (>) appears:
    mount -uw /
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    shutdown -h now
When the iBook restarts, you will see the setup screen. This allows you to create a new account. BE SURE to give the new account administrative privileges. You can now use this new account and set it to log in automatically with this new account if you don't want to be bothered with the login screen every time you start up.
    Good luck!

  • System preferences got deleted :S

I cannot seem to find my system preferences on my computer. About a week or two ago i saw them and i have not done much but i was trying to access them and it would not open. I searched on spotlight i could not find it. I went through nearly every folder and cannot find them. Also tried clicking on the apple on top left and then system preferences nothing opens. How can i re download it is there any link.

    Backup your files.
Get out the disk for your latest OS and reboot holding c and simply reinstall OS X, it will overwrite and replace any missing bundled programs.

  • System Preferences was deleted

I can't seem to find my System Preferences. I want to change my Screen or change my Dock, but I can't find it. I was suggested to look in my trash, or go to Spotlight and type in "System Preferences, but nothing showed up. I accidentally dragged it off of the Dock and it disappeared. Though I remember that there was a "?" over it, I tried clicking it but it never opened. Therefore I've been stuck with the same Screen. My brother gave his MacBook, because he was going to college so he got a MacBook Pro. He never Reset the computer or anything so it's still stuck under his name. Should I take it to Apple Store or what? And also, my sister thought that we could use iDisk or something. I don't know how to get System Preferences back!

System Preferences is in the Applications folder. (The main Applications, not the one in the Home folder.)
Do you have the start up disks that came with the computer?

  • How do i set system preferences to delete file cache that is not being used

My file cache is using over a GB of memory.  How do i set the system to free up memory that is being held but not used?

It's normal since Mavericks for almost all memory to be in use, either by applications or by the file cache. That's what you should want, since unused memory is going to waste. The relevant measure of whether memory is in short supply is what Apple calls "memory pressure."
Apple's explanation of memory pressure is here. If you want a more detailed, technical description, see here, and for the source code, see here.

  • My System Preferences, iCloud and Internet Accounts, are not working.

They show blank screens no matter which account I login with.
I removed every Internet Account using Mail.  Even though the account details didn't show up the + - buttons did and the prompt let me know I had the correct account selected.  After removing all accounts I rebooted and this didn't fix the problem.
I have searched for a solution to this problem and have not found any that worked yet.
    Please help.
    Patrick

I had the same frustrations, and then remembered similar problems with old stereo tuner technology.  It is called dust & corrosion; so I sprayed some electrical contact cleaner (available at some hardware or car supply stores) into the headphone port and the problem disappeared in about 2.5 seconds!  This is a more effective method to clean the micro-switch than pushing the headphone jack in and out, which could ultimately damage the switch anyway.

  • System Preferences is frozen open after attempting to delete two users

Went into System Preferences to delete two users.  Now the System Preferences is frozen.  When I try to close it a pop up box says...

    I would wait a day.
