Systems preferences does not work

My Systems Preferences does not work, either reminders and messages... since Mavericks(10.9) Programs do not respond and Macbook air is not responding....  Help.....

Well, you are certainly correct that the fact that the "wired" machines work sure doesn't rule out a faulty router....But that's why (as part of a process of elimination troubleshooting scheme) I hooked up my old Linksys Router, and got the same results. Now...What are the odds of 2 separate routers acting the same way? Especially when both worked fine on my TIPB and even on my MBP until a few months ago. Plus, my 12 year old son can pull a wireless signal from the router on his console games (xbox360, Wii, PS3) with no problem
Believe me, my first thought was to go out and buy another router, but when I swapped routers and got the same problem, I began to look elsewhere, eventually coming here for help and knowledge.
I did the SMC reset to no avail. I'm not sure about the stuff in System Configuration....By "pull" do you mean to delete all the files in this folder? Move them to a temporary folder? Should I just deal with the folders that have "IP" in the "bundle" file name?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Since upgrading to Lion OS 10.7.1, the wifi connectivity keeps blocking up intermittently and we need to manually keep switching on and off the wifi utility to get the connection back. even locking the preferred wifi network in system preferences does not help. This never used to happen with Snow Leopard

This is a big thank you to Rys Sinnefeldt who posted this fix.
Rys has made this fix very easy to do and takes literally 2 mins. It involves replacing the Atheros Lion driver 4.0 and replacing it with the snow leopard driver. Don't worry, Rys has made this so simple to do even I could do it and so far I have had no more wifi drops.

  • How do I adjust double click speed in Mountain Lion. The mouse system preferences does not seem to have a speed slider for double clicking. Only the tracking speed slider is visible.

Double clicking is no longer opening my folders.
How can I adjust the double click speed in Mountain Lion to reduce the double clicking speed. The mouse system preferences does not seem to have a speed slider for double clicking. Only the tracking speed slider is visible.

For 10.8.3,  it's in System Preferences > Accessiblity > highlight Mouse & trackpad on the left.  The Double click speed slider shows on the right.  Moving it to the left gives you more time between clicks.  Moving it right gives you less time.

  • Two-side View as Preference does not work

Two Side View ist set as Preference (Edit-Preferences-Page Display - Page Layout- Two-up) but does not work when opening a File. Has to be set manually every time (View-Page Display) - any suggestions? Acrobat Reader 11.0.3

Klaus, I beg to differ: Any capable graphics app. should succeed in opening them, but the files themselves should open in the app. the user has assigned to them—usually the one whose icon they carry—and only in that app. Computers are supposed to do as they're told.
First off, assure yourself that all your maintenance is up to date: MacJanitor, or Onyx or … the like and permissions repair have helped me w/ this sort of issue.
The other sorta helpful note is that apparently there's more than one flavour of some file types like .pdfs, JPEGs and such. The helpful advice I got was to be prepared to "Change all" a few times w/ common types before Finder would finally get my drift. With Apple in the mixed up midst of file recognition by type and creator codes (old style) and by extension (their style) as well as by meta data (new style) it's a wonder anything opens, and no surprise that the Finder's 'sytsem' hiccoughs disappointingly often.

  • SYstem Preferences does not recognize my iPhoto library.

I have a sort of random problem. I can reset Preferences when restarting my computer and set system preferences for my screen saver and desktop, to use my iPhoto library which is on an external USB for what I think are obvious reasons. Sometimes the iPhoto library is available and sometimes it is not. If it does not show up in the screen saver or desktop pain it is usually grey on my external drive. I just restarted my computer and got the photos I wanted, but I know from experience something will happen and they will be lost.

Locate a file named "com.apple.iApps.plist" and move it to your Desktop (for safe-keeping just in case,) then the next time you re-save your iPhoto Library, and/or change your wallpaper/screensaver settings, these should now work, and stick.

  • My system preferences is not working/ responding. Please help.

System Preferences is inactive. On the dock the Icon has a question mark on it.
I tried other solutions on  here, but nothing has work. Please help. Thank you
    Mac OS X 10.6.8

I was asking if the problem could be reproduced in another account.  If not then we know it's something lock only to your account.  But if you don't want to create another account we'll try some alternate scheme...
Is System Preferences.app in your /Applications folder?  If it is double click it to see if it launches.
It is possible you deleted it or moved it.  That would explain the question mark in the dock since the dock entry doen't find the actual System Preference app in /Applications.
If it isn't in /Applications you need to find it.  If it is deleted you need to reinstall it from somewhere (reinstall, or a backup for example).

  • System Preferences does not open in Dock, Apple menu and in apps?

I'm experiencing an issue with System Preferences. One day the I noticed that the Icon changed to a white page with the "Applications" "A" on it. Since then, I have not been able to launch the System Preferences in my profile. In my wife's, it works fine.

It changes in the Dock, or in the stacks pop-out window? If the latter, try double clicking it from within /Applications directly.

  • System preferences does not open

Sometimes when I press the System Preferences icon in dock nothing happens except it gets a dot under it. Right clicking on it shows it is running, and it has not crashed. I get a big list of all stuff in the preferences but nothing happens. So basically the UI is gone... Anyone has this?
I must say, I don't know where the fine tune is in Snow Leopard. Still $29 down the drain. I can't for the love of life understand how Apple could release this unfinished software...

    sebrock:
Glad it worked for you. As to how it happens, I don't know. Files get corrupted, and cause problems. You should be sure that you maintain a buffer of 15% to 20% of total HDD capacity as free space to allow for directory growth and swap files. Sometimes hardware issues can cause corruption. Download and run SMART Utility - 2.0.2. It will give you an estimate of the health of your internal HDD.
Incidentally, the .plist file you dragged to Desktop can now be Trashed. The system will have created a new one.

  • System preferences is not working

The system preferences of my macbook Pro is not working. As soon as I launch the programm, this is all I see.
Is sombody able to help me? What I'v already tried to do is to reinstall O.S. Lion.

Reinstalling OS X Lion won't work for something like this is because it's located in the Users folder.
Your System Preferences preference file has become corrupted and unable to save your changes.
Use the Finder Go menu and open the hidden folder
    /Library/Preferences
and look for a file called
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
there wil be two of them, one you can move, move it to the Desktop and reboot, launch System Preferences and reset your preferences, delete the desktop file.

  • My systems preference does not have an iCloud icon.  How do I get one?

I am trying to sync my computer with my iphone 4S.  I have an iCloud account.
It syncs my contacts and calender.  I am trying to do the photo stream.  But
in System Preferences there is not an icloud icon.  There is a mobileme icon, but
I do not use a mobileme account.  What do I do to get the iCloud on my mac.

Ah, ok, so what you need to do is order the retail Snow Leopard disk first (10.6) - either from the Apple store or online resellers ($29). Install that and update to the latest version - 10.6.8. Once there, you will note a new app called Mac App Store - that is where you go (using your iTunes account) and buy Lion 10.7 - it is a very large download (close to 4 GB) and not available as a DVD. Once downloaded, dismiss the installer and immediately go to your Applications folder. Find the Installer and copy it to another location for safekeeping/future use (so you don't have to download it again). Then double click the installer and run it.
Note: PowerPC apps will no longer work under Lion (i.e. Appleworks, Quicken).

  • System Preferences Search Not Working!

    Hi,
For some reason the Search bar in the my System Preferences window isn't working. If I type "dock" into it, the System Preferences window dims like it should, but none of the icons are highlighted. The Dock icon should be highlighted, but it isn't.
Does anyone know why this is happening? Seems to be related to Leopard since I never had this problem before.

I'm using Leopard Cache Cleaner which has a special submenu that can clean preferences. It checks each file to see if it isn't corrupted and also suggest to clear too old preference files. Very useful to maintain everything in tip top conditions.

  • Open in new tab preference does not work

Although i have tried all the options in your help pages and trouble shooting pages including deleting the prefs.nj file it still does not open url's in a new tab despite that preference being selected
    == immediately i instaleed friefox

The setting in Tools > Options > Tabs: "New pages should be opened in": "a new tab/window" is for links that specify a target window to open the link in.
That option allows you to divert such links to a new tab or to the current tab.
For other links you have to use a middle-click or press Ctrl and left-click or use the context menu.
You need to left-click JavaScript links and divert them to a new tab or you get a blank tab.
Some extensions that you can look at:
