Systems start-up issues - only safe mode is available

Any ideas to overcome my system start-up problem?
I have only been able to start my laptop up in safe mode today.
Attempts to overcome this by removing recently installed software and trying a systems restore to a date prior to any system changes have not been able to resolve the problem.
I followed the recommendation of looking at the systems diagnostic utility but am not really sure what I am supposed to be looking for.
Working on a computer in safe mode is not a long term option!

Hi
I agree with you working in the safe mode is not a really a solution but why dont you reinstall the whole OS???
For me its the easiest way to bring the notebook and the OS back to the life
Usually after the usage of the Recovery installation the notebook should start like a dream ;)
If there is no hardware malfunction everything will run ok

  • Firefox not responding when any button is clicked - including "options" and others needed to start it up in safe mode. How can I fix this?

I already tried re-installing but - alas - to no avail. As I stated in my questioon already, Firefox (latest version) doesn't react to anything I click, hence why I am not even able to do the troubleshooting at all nor start the browser in safe mode. In addition to this, no websites are being displayed and all I am able to see is a blank page - no matter which website I actually want to view.
Other browsers work totally fine but due to certain programs, Firefox is necessary and other browsers like Chrome are not an option.

  • First windows only safe mode boots. Now system won't power up. :(

    First A Hearty Thank You
First of all, thank you all for helping me with my issues here( https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=50738&sid=&hilight=Bamaboy ).  And thanks Bas for the heads up on the 1 Gig of RAM thing with Windows98.  That's one possibility I hadn't even considered.  (But it still seems strange that it would even go into safe-mode witth the 1gig, does it not? )
But A Whole New Gremlin Rises To Challenge Me
But now I have a whole new issue that may prevent me from even trying your suggestions from before.  While experimenting on different ways to get my system running, I took off one of the front panel USB connectors and inserted the D-Bracket thingie, and the system booted once normally (well, normal meaning I could access the BIOS/Windows Safe mode, etc ).  And after that, it won't boot at all!
    *sigh*
How do I kill THIS Gremlin?
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could have been?  I didn't smell anything fun, so I don't think anything fried, but I could be wrong.  I've tried turning off and disconnecting the power supply, but nothing.  The fan don't come on, and I don't hear anything powering up at all.
    Any ideas?

Not sure exactly what I did to do the trick.  I unplugged one of the front panel USB connectors as suggested, and I turned off and unplugged the PSU and restarted.  And everything powered up!  I still have no idea why this worked, but I'm not complaining.
Now I'm at least back to square one of trying to figure out how to get Win98 to load up.

  • Firefox Application will not start unless in PC Safe Mode

I have another kind of problem with Firefox
    == Description
    ==
A couple of days ago after seemingly working fine the day before Firefox suddenly decided to stop working. I seem to recall updating both my Adobe Flash and my Java on that day, and I'm also not 100% sure that I didn't change my Overclock settings too (but I think I did that and Firefox was still working)
Basically if I "start" Firefox from any location be it shortcut, direct executable or otherwise the application does not "run" I get the process but that is all. I have tried renaming to various combinations but still nothing appears to have any effect. Using the -profilemanager suffix in my shortcut / startmenu search and creating and using a new Profile has no effect either as does deletion, and Firefox Safe Mode shows the settings window but after choosing to open in safe mode nothing happens and I am left with the Firefox process hanging there doing nothing. I have tried multiple compatibility and administrator run settings but no effect.
I have uninstalled, reinstalled. Done full cleans deleting everything to do with Firefox and its Profiles. Uninstalled Flash and Java, and then Reinstalling FF. I have scoured the registy deleting anything obviously connected to Firefox, Mozilla and even Java to no effect (I have not cleaned out for Flash due to having multiple Adobe apps which I would prefer not to screw up.) I have downgraded from 3.6.3 to 3.6.2 and as far as 3.5.1 and then doing upgrade to the new 3.6.4. All with the help of my CCleaner to tie off any loose ends, but nothing seems to work. Can't restore pc to earlier date as I only remembered about it after I had already made too many changes.
The only time I can manage to run Firefox properly at all is when I am in Windows Safe Mode, I am sick of Google Chrome as it feels really slow and I also dislike Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer. I really do not know what else to do and would really appreciate some help so that I may use the only good browser that I have found again.

Firefox will only open in safe mode and other issues in Firefox 3.6.8
    Rig / Set-up:
    Win 7 (U.S.) / Ultimate 32bit
    • P.O.S. Internet Explorer not installed…
    • Firefox Default Browser
    This Event:
    1. Firefox will immediately close after opening 2 blank (Untitled) tabs and /or 2 (Untitled) windows.
    2. Firefox will not open a 2nd time.
    3. Firefox will only open in Safe-mode (.exe))
    4. Firefox excruciating slow Start-Up
    5. Firefox web –surfing unbearably slow
    6. Firefox unpleasant web page hanging behavior
    7. Firefox awful flash content behavior / Obnoxious Adobe Flash Player has always been and will always be crap.
    The Cause:
    Session Manager = Corruption …!!!
o This issue was created by faulty and inconsistent and flawed M$ Win 7 legacy software support for Hardware.
 The Keyboard / Hardware would generate a separate session manager event with the action/Web key.
 Firefox and/or TabMixPlus session manger were corrupted in the event process.
    The Source:
    A: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate32-US Version = substandard legacy device handling :
B: Hardware/Keyboard (shortcut) Customization Software Conflicts causing Corruptions of Firefox-Session Manger.
    The Fix..!!!
    I. Remove from Add and Remove Programs (Win7) Hardware/Keyboard Software “only”. ..Special note: Win 7 Updated- Hardware/Keyboard Device driver does not have to be removed...!!
II. Clean and remove all Instances of Keyboard software.
    a. The “Best-est and Safest” Registry Cleaner is jv16 2010 Power Tools.
    b. Restart Computer.
III. “If” available install an older version of your “Hardware/keyboard software” compatible with Win 7 that will allow some customization of Hardware/Keyboard-keys.
    Confirm fix by:
    1. Restart Firefox from Hardware/Keyboard key (shortcut).
    2. Clean-up Internet crap and corrupted session managers...
    3. Test Launch keyboard shortcut of Firefox.exe [“after” a clean-up of all internet crap]…
    4. Test launch keyboard shortcut again / use Firefox extensively or normal use for any recurring bad web behavior.
    If Corruption events occur again:
    i. Use different and / or Older Keyboard “software” with win 7.
ii. Or you will have to wait for a Win 7 Hardware/Keyboard software update for keyboard installed.
    Note:
“Do not use the hardware or keyboard shortcut-key for Web Browsing… Or else: // This Event (See Above): …Will Continue..!!!..”
And it is “not” a Firefox 3.6.8 issue.
    So, look elsewhere.
    Look @ the main culprits:
    a. Substandard legacy device handling: Micro$oft Windows Operating System in combination / with.
    b. Customization Software for your keyboard or other hardware that generates web functions and web sessions. / Hardware driver may not be the problem.
    Add-on:
    Flash Switcher Win / 1.0.2_
    DownThemAll! / 1.1.10__
    Personal Menu / 4.3.2__
    Tab Mix Plus / 0.3.8.4__
Theme Font Size Changer / 0.2_
    MR Tech Toolkit / 6.0.4__
    Menu Editor / 1.2.6
It is with hope that this solution may help someone.?
    Happy Foxing..!!!

  • Blue screen on start up, even in safe mode, common fixes not working

I did quite a bit of searching for the problem I'm having, and it seems some of the symptoms are common, but none of the various fixes I've come across have worked. Any help pointing to other things to try would be appreciated, as it is getting harder to search for things without finding repeats of what I've already tried. Also, I was going to post this on the OSX 10.4 board, but changes in symptoms (mentioned at the end of this post) are starting to make me think this could be a hardware issue.
The main problem is that my computer boots normally until the blue screen just before the login window should appear, then hangs.
My system: iBook G4, 800 MHz, running 10.4.11, has an extra GB of RAM installed (for a total of 1.1 GB), new hard drive that is less than a year old.
    Things I've tried:
Booting in safe mode: No change, still hangs at blue screen.
Removing airport card, and extra ram has no effect.
    I've done a PRAM reset
    I've done a PSU reset
Checked for file system and permissions errors with Disk Utility on OS CD
Booting into single user mode works fine, where I tried:
    fsck -fy, no errors reported
running /etc/rc worked fine for a while
No unexpected errors or problems seen in /Library/Logs/Console/501/console.log, or in /var/log/system.log
I've temporarily moved /Library/Preferences, /Library/Caches, and /System/Library/Caches, /User/Library/Caches, /User/Library/Preferences, /System/Extensions.kextcache and /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb to make sure none of those were corrupted (plus checked preferences with plutil), nothing fixed.
I've double checked the permissions of the root directory.
This problem did not follow an update or installation of any kind. The computer just completely locked up in the middle of using Safari (and just typing in an edit box, nothing with much of a workload) and the blue screen hang happened upon rebooting after shutting down by holding down the power button.
Single user mode appeared to work fine, although I did get single user mode to hang when trying to back up a few GB of files onto a thumbdrive after copying about 90% of the files. And then a new problem came up where afterward, now the blue screen pops up and hangs about 30 seconds after running /etc/rc returns to the prompt (and about 20 seconds after last of it finishes outputting). I've tried clearing caches again but /etc/rc still causes this.
I was going to try to run AppleJack (recommended for checking permissions and clearing caches) after copying the files to the thumbdrive, but of course didn't think to install that until after I had a problem. And now that /etc/rc causes a problem, I don't know how to attach the AppleJack .dmg file other than hdiutil, which needs the /etc/rc to have been run, and also can't remount the thumbdrive to copy any more files over.
After this recent problem, I noticed that now booting from the OS CD goes to the blue screen too and no further. Has anyone else seen such a problem? I've heard of some issues with loose GPUs in the iBook G4, but they seem to mention scrambled or no/black video (video looks fine in single user mode and in open firmware, and up to the blue screen which is clear and bright). So now I don't seem to have an option to try an Archive & Install of the OS (which I was hoping to avoid, due to effort needed to reinstall other software).

Thank you, I had forgotten about target mode. I was able to back up all of my files. I also copied some additional 50 GB of files of the disk as a stress test and the hard drive worked fine and quick (and because it was quicker than retrieving the same files from a network drive to my desktop).
I was hoping to also unpack the Applejack files on my desktop and put them back so I could run them in single user mode without running /etc/rc. However I haven't been able to get my Linux desktop to mount the iBook in Read-Write instead of Read-Only yet (I don't have access to another Mac at the moment).

  • Can anyone ID this problem? Finder icon started bouncing, unresponsive, now Safe Mode reboot stops 1/3 in and shuts down iMac. Virus?

This started yesterday. I switch on the computer, go into my User account and the Finder icon was bouncing in the deck while a window flashed on about Restoring Windows though you could never click on it because...it kept flashing. The folders on my desktop disappeared so I went into a secondary user account and opened it to find a virus scan. That user account had no issue with the bouncing Finder icon. I downloaded ClamXav and ran it but that being a rarely used user account, it found nothing infected. I went back in in Safe Mode and was able to see my invisible files but the Finder being unresponsive, I could basically only look at them. Also, I couldn't activate ClamXav after downloading it in that user account. All it did was allow me to see my files.
This morning, while I switched on the computer the Safe Mode came on without me holding down the Shift key. Sadly, it didn't get past the third of the little progress bar before shutting down the computer. This happened trying to open either user accounts. I'm shut out. I'm so shocked this happened. I called the ISP and he said everything was normal at his end, naturally in spite of a lot of freezing and not allowing more than one device on wifi at a time. This is an upgraded Internet service after moving to a new place. Otherwise for the few moments it lights up to show me the two users at log in, nothing is visually wrong.
If this has ever happened to anyone, please enlighten me. I've called a Mac repair shop and expect to bring my iMac in. It's barely two years old. : (

  • My Mac starts up fine in safe mode, but freezes before the login screen in normal mode.

I have the 2012 MBP, 4 GB of RAM, 500GB HD, 2.5GHz Intel i5 processor.  Everything worked fine, until one day it freezes all of a sudden.  I shut down and restarted.  The Apple logo appears with the loading animation underneath.  A few moments later, the animation disappears, and the mouse cursor appears.  This is normal.  What's not normal is that it stays on this screen forever.  I can't get to the login screen even after waiting sooo long.  Even restarting 5 times only repeats this problem.  I finally boot into safe mode.  I am able to login and get to the desktop in safe mode, but not normal mode.  Clearing every startup item in System Prefs, and in the startupitems folders does not solve the problem.  Disk utility says no problems.  Resetting PRAM does nothing.  Can anyone please tell me what I should do next?

Do you hear the startup chimes?
If so, then the startup disk may need repairing ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.
Make sure to back up all important files first before using OS X Recovery.
OS X Recovery does require a broadband high speed internet connection.

  • My iMac freezes up after starting, works fine in safe mode. What to do?

    Hey,
I've got an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 24" with Mac OS X 10.5.8 and a few days ago it froze while playing a game and watching an online video at the same time. When I turned it on the next morning all seemed fine but after half an hour it froze up again while doing the same thing. After this it froze up everytime within minutes of starting up. When it freezes it gives me a light purple, dark or grey screen. No error messages or anything.
When I start it using safe mode it works just fine.
I've tried all the usual stuff: resetting RAM, testing hardware and even running it on both my 2 GB RAMS seperately. None of this solved the problem or gave me any clue what to look for.
I've also tried reinstalling Mac OS X but after a while of showing me the apple and the loading circle it just gives me an empty grey screen.
Has anyone had similar problems, or advice what to do next?

Haven't Updated in a while, but at some point I got the thought that it was some sort of monitor problem, so I tested my comp with an extra monitor connected. As it turns out, there are no problems whatsoever when I connect one. It doesn't freeze up! The monitor doesn't even have to be turned on!
Does anyone have enough knowledge of the technology/system to conclude what the problem with my Imac is?
Little piece of extra info: The color the screen turns when it freezes seems to be the color in the exact middle of the screen. (Example: Light purple from the default mac background)

  • I can't start my MacBook in safe mode or recovery mode

I have a 2009 MacBook pro (bought in August), I am running Mavericks on it  Not entirely sure the exact patch. Last night it froze up on me out of the blue. I was able to move the mouse but wasn't able to click anything, open applications or even pull up the force quit window. The cursor was replaced by the psychedelic pinwheel. I turned off my computer by holding down the power button. When I went to turn it back on the Apple logo appeared with a loading bar. After the bar was about 50% of the way through the logo and status bar were replaced by a prohibitory sign. I then tried to boot in safe mode and got the same results. I have also tried to boot from the recovery drive. I held down the option key (the cmd+R method doesn't seem to do anything) and selected the recovery drive but received the same results. I have also tried to boot up from an external harddrive with some time machine backups and received the same results. I do not have my copy of the install disc on me but  waiting to borrow a copy to try and boot from the cd. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and what you did to resolve it. Or if anyone has any idea what the is causing the issue.
Thank you for your time. Apologies for any grammatical errors. I am typing this from my phone.

Note that Install DVDs are model specific so you can only use one from a MBP that is the exact model as yours.  Otherwise the disk will not work.  Duplicate Leopard disks may be obtained from Apple Customer service.  You will have to provide them with the serial number of the MBP (on the bottom) and there is a charge.
Based on the symptoms that you describe, your internal HDD has failed and will have to be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • Firefox won't start (not even in Safe Mode) on Windows 7 x64

    I am Running Windows 7 x64 and Firefox 3.6.15.
Since the day before yesterday I am unable to start Firefox. Even in Safe Mode it just won't start.
I click the Firefox icon, the mouse cursor changes to indicate the computer is doing something. After 3 seconds or so the mouse cursor again changes back to its default state. Nothing else happens.
The Task Manager in Windows shows me that an instance of firefox.exe is running, but I see no Firefox window.
Then if I again click to open Firefox, another firefox.exe instance starts, but again I see no Firefox window.
There isn't even a warning about one instance of Firefox already running.
    What I have tried:
I have uninstalled Firefox, removed all the Firefox files and folders from c:\users\username\AppData\Local and Roamning. I re-downloaded the 3.6.15 installation package and re-installed.
    No change.

    I have the same problem.
The only Firefox version working is the 64bit nightly build 6.0a1. No 32Bit version of Firefox works!. Chrome, Safari and Internet Explorer all work well.
Another Problem I have in this context is, that the Firefox Installer hangs in the tidy up step - even for the nightly 64Bit version. I have to kill the setup.exe process but the Installation seems to be completed.
Before my change to Win7 64Bit I had OpenText NFS Solo 14 installed on a 32Bit Windows7 and no Problems.
Is there a solution for this problem without uninstalling OpenText NFS Solo 14?
I need the NFS Server at work.

Have you changed your java administrator password recently? If so, have you changed it in the configtool as well?

  • When I try to use teh search space I get Access Denied. I never used to. Please help me. Yesterday I was told to empty cache. I did, or start my Mac in Safe Mod

I can attach a screen shot of what I get. The Safe Mode may have shut off my link to my printers. I spent $85 to have an IT guy get my printers responding again. What's going on? Please help.

  • Blackberry 9800 Torch not starting up or entering Safe mode

    Hi all,
I am owner of a Blackberry 9800 Torch for about a year and now it does not startup. I turned the phone off last night and this morning it does not start up. I didn't make any changes to the phone so very strange.
The behaviour is that when I take the battery out and it turns on, the load screen start but the little white line only starts a little(2mm line) and then it restarts and does the same thing and loop over and over again in this till battery runs out.
I have tired to enter Safe mode by holding in the Escape bottom when the load screen starts or when the red light turn off but it does not enter Safe mode.
Please can anybody advise how I can fix this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Stefan

Are you able to restart your device in safe mode as shown in KB17877?
I assume, since it's caught in a reboot cycle, when you connect to the Desktop Software it doesn't take a stable connection to reinstall your software?
If that is case, remove your battery and keep it out when you connect to the Desktop Software. You will get a pop up that the device can't connect and there should be Retry, Update and Cancel buttons. Select Update and you will then be able to reinstall the current device software version.
When the load is progressing, you will see a step that says "Wait for device initialization". At this point, insert the battery and the reload should complete.

  • Firefox crashes on start-up, even in safe mode

Back in March/April 2012, Firefox started crashing for me on start up, possibly after the automatic/remote installation of MS security patches. After that time, I've not been able to start Firefox without it going directly to the Mozilla Crash Reporter. I've tried everything I could think of including safe-mode, uninstall/re-install, uninstall/back-up profiles directory/wipe profiles and all registry entries/re-install. This continues to fail since version 11(?) through 13.0.1. Even Sea Monkey crashes same manner. BTW, clicking on the "Details" button in the Mozilla Crash Reporter has no effect for me. I was trying it to help fill in the Troubleshooting Information box below as I can't get to "Help > Troubleshooting Information" as Firefox doesn't start.

What was the location of the file?
