SystemUIServer and loginwindow process showing memory leak causing Lion to stop responding
I have shut down almost all apps, except Activity Monitor, and both SystemUIServer and loginwindow process continue to grow over 1GB.
I could kill SystemUIServer and it will relaunch itself and the symptom resurfaces quickly. loginwindow couldn't be killed.
The virtual memory involved are even larger in terms of 10GB to 20GB until my hard disk runs in panic mode.
Restarting my Lion doesn't fix the issue. Login using a different user profile does not experience the same symptom.
Is this a Lion bug?
I reinstalled Lion OS X using the command-R feature at startup. Everything solved.

I am running XP. I recently loaded Firefox 4.0 on my system.
There were a lot of problems loading some web sites. Your help system suggested to disable all plugins. I did this and I don't have problems with web sites anymore but I cannot view any videos. I have tried reinstalling Adobe Flash but it just causes Firefox to stop responding.

After i upgrade to lion and updated logic pro to version 9.1.6 stops responding when loading "Ryu Chords" it stops responding on certain moment, i tried to reinstall freshly and update to version 9.1.5 but problem same so at this moment version is 9.1.6. I tried 64bit too but no changes. And the thing is that i need studio and i need to sort this problem quick.
Please everybody if you had same problem give me answer or any idea what to do
ThanksThe sample rate is not 128 or so, you probably mean the buffer size...
But the performance drop makes sense: switching between a 64 bit process and 32 bit doesn't come free: it cost performance and creates a jitter, which also either shows as performance lost or instability.
You really have to move away from outdated 32 bit AudioUnits, sorry. Ask the vendors to finally release 64 bit versions, it has been several years since 64 bit is available. -

Launching Mail becomes a runaway process and creates a massive memory leak in the kernel task
I have 16gig of ram, my kernel task is currently using 12gig, Mail is no longer responding while using all remaining ram
Mail has been jammed at 100% of one i7 core for about 2 hours now, disk activity is almost nonexistant.
it was running poorly yesterday, rebuilding the mailboxes did not yeild a positive effect
permissions and drive check out
Quicklook is also reporting a lot of bs when finder windows are open:
example:

I hate the new activity monitor so much, none the less, "Memory Pressure" is pinned
Seeing a whole lot of this in the console as well:

Mac Pro with 32 GB, and Mail takes about 5 minutes to "start" - well, show the Mail Menu. Then, another few minutes to actually draw the window... but wait, it STILL needs more time to actually show the accounts and mail.
The (stupid) new Activity Monitor show Mail using 12 GB of RAM, and several com plist files also sucking up CPU time and RAM. Why Apple has to dumb-down good information to "Memory Pressure" is beyond me!
I have reported thsi to Apple, and they had a Support person get in touch with me. I have sent several spindumps and tarball files last week, but no reply. Today, I pinged the support person who said Apple Engineering was reviewing the information, and would likely get back sometime as *maybe* some others were experiencing this problem... -
[LPX] Drummer/Drum Kit Designer memory leak causing crash
After working with LPX for a couple of days after release with almost no problems save for a few system overload errors that always seemed to sort themselves out, I loaded up a project I had been working on to find that it crashed every time I tried to play the track. Other, smaller projects, still played in varying degrees, some having to wait for a long time seemingly for samplers to load up etc.
I did some testing (painstaking, considering that I was having to force-quit the application for my computer to even run again; as an aside there were never any error reports for whatever reason) and found that it appears to be Drummer/Drum Kit Designer that's causing massive memory usage. Looking at the activity monitor when loading the project revealed that the memory usage would just go up and up until it maxed out my (rather modest) 4GB RAM, at which point there would be no free memory and the computer would slow almost to a standstill. Removing all instances of Drum Kit Designer and Drummer reduces the load to a point where it is once again manageable.
This seems like a fault in Drummer, I'm thinking possibly a memory leak. Has anyone else been experiencing this problem/anyone have any thoughts as to how it could be fixed?
Thanks in advance,
JasperThis is not a memory bug. It's simply the nature of the new Drummer.
Drummer uses a LOT of samples. It's a 13GB download for a reason. You will need more than 4GB to use drummer and not run into issues.
The nature of the modern Logic engine - which seems unchanged from v9 - makes it very bad at being able to tell when it's running out of memory. Logic will simply freeze or crash most of the time it runs out. The freeze would be down to it using literally every last MB on your RAM without overstepping the boundary, and the crash would be downt to it claiming to need more real RAM than you have spare.
Producer kits use 5.1 surround samples, and submixes them to stereo in a way that posistions them around the space. Whilst a doddle for a modern machine, you Mac is rather long in the tooth to be trying to do that whilst struggling to handle 1.2GB patches with 4GB of RAM total. -
Help needed: Memory leak causing system crashing...
Hello guys,
As helped and suggested by Ben and Guenter, I am opening a new post in order to get help from more people here. A little background first...
We are doing LabView DAQ using a cDAQ9714 module (with AI card 9203 and AO card 9265) at a customer site. We run the excutable on a NI PC (PPC-2115) and had a couples of times (3 so far) that the PC just gone freeze (which is back to normal after a rebooting). After monitor the code running on my own PC for 2 days, I noticed there is a memory leak (memory usage increased 6% after one day run). Now the question is, where the leak is???
As a newbee in LabView, I tried to figure it out by myself, but not very sucessful so far. So I think it's probably better to post my code here so you experts can help me with some suggestions. (Ben, I also attached the block diagram in PDF for you) Please forgive me that my code is not written in good manner - I'm not really a trained programmer but more like a self-educated user. I put all the sequence structures in flat as I think this might be easier to read, which makes it quite wide, really wide.
This is the only VI for my program. Basically what I am doing is the following:
1. Initialization of all parameters
2. Read seven 4-20mA current inputs from the 9203 card
3. Process the raw data and calculate the "corrected" values (I used a few formula nodes)
4. Output 7 4-20mA current via 9265 card (then to customer's DCS)
5. Data collection/calculation/outputing are done in a big while loop. I set wait time as 5 secs to save cpu some jucie
6. There is a configuration file I read/save every cycle in case system reboot. Also I do data logging to a file (every 10min by default).
7. Some other small things like local display and stuff.
Again I know my code probably in a mess and hard to read to you guys, but I truely appreciate any comments you provide! Thanks in advance!
Rgds,
Harry

I didn't really look through all of your logic but I would highly recommend that you check out the examples for implementing state machines. Your application suffers greatly in that once you start you basically jumped off the cliff. There is no way to alter your flow. Once in the sequence structure you MUST execute every frame. If you use a state machine architecture you can take advantage of shift registers and eliminate most of your local variables. You will also be able to stop execution if necessary such as a user abort or an error. Definitely look at using subVIs. Try to avoid implementing most of your program in formula nodes. You have basically written most of your processing there. While formula nodes are easier for very complex equations most of what you have can easily be done in native LabVIEW code. Also if you create subVIs you can iterate over the data sets. You don't need to duplicate the code for every data set.
I tell this to new folks all the time. Take some time to get comfortable with data flow programming. It is a different paradigm than sequential text based languages but once you learn it it is extremely powerful. All your data flow to control execution rather than relying on the sequence frame structure. A state machine will also help quite a bit.

Memory leak caused by de-serialization
i have a memory leak.
i am "pretty" sure it is related to serialization .
for(;;) {
sok.receive(dgPak);
ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(new ByteArrayInputStream(dgPak.getData()));
MyInterface x = (MyInterface) ois.readObject();
x.go();
x = null;
System.gc();
}after the above code loops for 100-200 times, i always get OutOfMemoryError .
important :
public class MyClass implements MyInterface {
public void go() {
public void finalize() {
System.out.println("object disposed. memory released. but, what might be leaking here??");
}in my testing: " *public void go();* " and " *public void finalize();* " execute the same number of times.
so... my guess is allocating memory via " *new* " and de-serialization is different, right?
this must be related to the problem?i forgot to include one line, but i didn't see why it made a difference:
ConcurrentMap<Connection, Boolean> connPool = this.createConnPool();
for(;;) {
sok.receive(dgPak);
ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(new ByteArrayInputStream(dgPak.getData()));
MyInterface foo = (MyInterface) ois.readObject();
foo.assignSharedMap(connPool); // <-- forgot to include this one line.
foo.doStuff();
foo = null;
System.gc();
}the number of de-serializations still equals the number of " +public void finalize();+ " invocations.
note: i never add new connections to the pool. it "looks" like a ConcurrentMap
does not allow objects that reference it to compleley die. (if this behaviour is as to be expected , my apologies, and could you explain a safe way for multiple objects to share a common Collection ?)
this code works fine:
for(;;) {
sok.receive(dgPak);
ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(new ByteArrayInputStream(dgPak.getData()));
MyInterface foo = (MyInterface) ois.readObject();
foo.doStuff();
foo = null;
System.gc();
}at this stage of de-bugging i could have tested with just a regular java.util.Map<Connection, Boolean> but forgot. i am using a
completely different approach now, so i'm not going back to test, though i bet it is related to java.util.concurrent. . -
I have a 2008 21-inch iMac, and a 2010 MacBook Pro, both with 4 GB RAM, running OS X Lion 10.7.3. Ever since I installed Lion, I've had this problem of available memory dwindling to almost nothing (10-20 MB) after a day or so of usage. Last night I went to bed and the MacBook Pro had 400 MB available (according to Activity Monitor) and when I woke up this morning it was nearly frozen with only 10 MB available.
I'm not an extreme techie but I've been working in the IT world for over 30 years, including 3 years with Apple, and in my experience this situation is called a Memory Leak. If it were just one of my systems I would suspect something local, but they both behave the same way. (My partner's machine does the same thing.) I've installed the 3rd-party app Memory Freer, which frees up 6-800 GB each time I run it. But as time goes on the memory fills back up again more quickly, and finally I have to reboot.
Checking Activity Monitor, it's not just one app that takes up memory - they all seem to grow over time. (Mail, iPhoto, iTunes, Word, Chrome, etc.) Chrome seems to be the worst offender, with a plethora of Worker and Renderer processes grabbing 10-80 MBs for each open window - and I often leave 10-15 open at any given time. But all apps' memory usage grows over time, even if I haven't accessed them - witness last night's spontaneous bloat on my MacBook.
I've read a couple of other threads on Memory Leaks, but most point to a single app or just suggest Memory Freer. Does Apple know it's got a major league problem here? Are they doing anything about it?
One other point - I get the spinning ball on a lot of tasks, most often with Word and and Excel re-calc, which can last 3-5 seconds, and is another indicator of system overload, even when I've cleared the memory with MemoryFreer and there is supposedly several hundred GB of RAM available. This issue lessens after reboot, but is almost constant with Microsoft Office apps.LKHill wrote:
I tried the kextstat message and the response was:

which apparently indicates that there are no kernel extensions running.
That means you don't hve any non-Apple kernel extension. There are still lots of other possibilities for third party interference. Are you running any kind of anti-virus or clean-up software? Those aren't needed and will likely just cause problems.
I understand what you're all saying about unused memory going to waste, but for MacOS to operate "correctly" it would need to free up previously-allocated memory as it is needed by other or new applications, and it doesn't seem to be doing that. It's just acting like it's out of memory, with all processes slowing to a crawl.
"Free"? You are still looking at memory. If all processes are slowing to a crawl, then that is a problem worth investigating. If you can't get past the assumption that memory is the cause, you'll never figure it out.
I did check CPU utilization as well, and it's rarely over 25%. However, on one of my systems, Page Outs were about equal to Page Ins, substantially over the 10% "healthy" threshold that was suggested. So I upgraded to 10.7.4, and Page Outs are down in the acceptable range. The overnight bloat also seems to have gone away, but each app still creeps up with time, albeit more slowly now.
I too would like to return to the days of 10.6 where I didn't reboot for days - or weeks - and Microsoft apps didn't display spinning wheels with each reactivation task or any simple calculation or text move.
So, in other words, you fixed the memory problem but the performance issues remain. That tells me that it isn't a memory problem.
Also, because you seem unwilling to look past memory, I'm unwilling to accept your CPU usage claims. Sometimes it takes several attempts before I can get people to setup Activity Monitor correctly to see exactly what is going on with their systems. That is step 1. We haven't made it to step 1 yet.
It seems clear that Lion's new process model is at least partially to blame here. With two completely different systems running (work MacBook, home iMac) plus my work partner's MacBook experiencing all the same symptoms, it's not likely my own setup. So I've also ordered an upgrade to 8 GB RAM.
Here's the rub. If low memory isn't the cause, buying more won't help.
I guess I'm just not accustomed to hating a new MacOS release, but between these performance problems and the inexplicable need to Duplicate TextEdit documents in order to do a Save-As (yeah, I know, Versioning is a great idea, blah blah - please get rid of it anyway) I really, really hate Lion.
It's just an operating system and doesn't care how you feel. I strongly suspect that feeling is more the explanation of any issues you have. I hate Linux. I really do. Therefore, I don't use it. While I would love to help you figure out what is wrong with your machine, that will only work if you meet me halfway and help look. If you have already identified the cause, then you don't need my help. The problem is Lion. Erase your hard drive and the problem will be gone. -
I have a rMBP mid-2012 with OSX 10.9 and some processes (e.g. iTunes, QTKitServer Safari Web Content) appear in red in the Activity Monitor, leading to high CPU temperature and low performance. What can be the source of this?
See this link: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23933863#23933863
What I do is turn on the Activity Monitor with a search for qt, and I continue to "force quit" the process. -
I open the browser and the Hime Page opens as expected. When I open a link to an item or article on the page in a new Tab Firefox stops responding and thye top line on the screen shows that to be the case. The only way to resolve the issue is to exit or close Firefox and start again. This has just started yesterday (Oct 12) as before that the process worked fine.
When I open a new Tab and then type in a new web site it will open and allow access with no problem, provided I have not open a link as outlined in the first paragraph. I can open several tabs in this manner and Firefox works as expected. But if I try to link from any page and open in a new Tab i get the "not responding" situation again.
After closing Firefox so I can restart it, the browser will open but the first screen will be a blank tab rather than my home page. I can open web sites and Firefox proceeds as expected as long as I do not try to open a link from within the page in a new Tab. I get the same "Not responding" situation.
If I immediately close Firefox after it opens without my homepage and then restart it then my home page will open as expected.
I have not made any changes to programs or setups in Firefox or on my computer in the immediate time before the problem started.Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

Changing download order causes iTunes to stop responding
I suspect I have found a bug in iTunes 7.5.0.20 that is reproducable each and every time. iTunes stops responding, if I drag a show from the bottom of the download queue, to the top of the exposed queue list box, and then just above the list box, or somewhere in between the names of pending downloads. My situation may be rare, since I have a very long list of shows to download (about 30) in queue. On some tries to reorder the queue, I have been able to have one show move, only to have the second show I move up cause iTunes to freeze and stop responding.
I suspect this to be a reproducable error on any 7.5.0.20 iTunes Windows client that has an extended list of queued downloads. Has anyone else experience this problem?

This didn't start until a few days ago and now it takes the computer 5-0min to shutdown. -
Dreamweaver CS6: Embedding Youtube Video causes DW to stop responding
HI,
I'm trying to build a simple site that displays an embedded youtube video on the main page. The video is placed in a div tag that is placed in a specific spot on the page background to make it appear as if it's playing on an old PC that's part of the image. I paste the code into the div tag in the code view and it appears as a grey box in design view. Everything seems fine up to there, however when I click live view DW CS6 stops responding and the design view window goes white. I've tried pasting the video embed code into my other page, and into a blank html document to see if it was a problem with the rest of the code but the same thing happens on any of the pages. If I save the page and preview in Chrome or Firefox the page displays the windows loading cursor for a few minutes and then returns a youtube error 6 (ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND).
I spent a few hours researching and found nothing via Google searches, Adobe help or Lynda.com tutorials. I'm new to web design and CSS and got as far as I did through Lynda.com lessons. Which is to say I have an index page and a seperate game guide page that links back and forth displaying images and text exactly as I'd like. Everything else works well enough only the video embedding is giving me trouble which is frustrating because according to everything I've read it's supposed to be one of the simplest processes.
I'm really at a loss as to how to fix this issue and would appreciate any help the Adobe community can give me.
Thanks in advance.Good to know,
I fixed the problem but I'm not exactly sure why this worked. I went to a different site that uses Youtube hosted videos and tried their embed code which appeared the same to my untrained eye. But to my surprise this other video worked perfectly, so I just put the url for my video in and it worked. I'm not sure why, as far as I can tell both embed codes are the same. Both use <iframe> tags. But it works now, suffice to say I've gained some respect for the people who do this stuff day to day. -
Adobe Flash 10 causes IE7 to stop responding
When I Enable the Flash(10.0) addon in the IE 7 sometimes IE7
stops responding under Vista (Business).
Report says adobe flash is causing this.
When I disable the flash addon, IE7 works fine.I've been having this same problem, so I finally reverted to
Flash 9 and now IE 8 (which is in its Release Candidate 1 stage, so
it's not really a beta anymore) works perfectly.
However I prefer to stay relatively up to date and I know
that I can't use Flash 9 forever. I do wish Adobe would do
something about this, since I've seen post in several forums about
this exact issue but no one has had any response from Adobe
whatsoever... -
Firefox 4 Add-on manager causes application to stop responding
I just upgraded from the latest updated of version of Firefox v3.0 to 4.0. When I try and use the new Add-on Manager, all of Firefox stops responding. Essentially nothing works. I click on Tools - Add-ons, the tab opens, I download a selected add-on, and then nothing happens, There is no indication that the add-on has installed. If I mouse click anywhere, including the menu items, minimize the window, or the close application buttons, nothing happens, The only way to close Firefox is to launch Task Manager and use "end task" function. Task Manager then tells me Firefox is not responding and do I want to send an error report to Microsoft. I copied the 4 dump related files in the Microsoft report before sending it. If any, or all, would be useful I will send them to a responsible party. If I start Firefox but do not try and do anything with add-ons, it seems to function correctly. Also any other running programs do not seem to be affected.
I am running a desktop with XP SP3 with all updates downloaded and installed as they are issued.You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Profiles
New files will be created when required.
See "Corrupt extension files":
*http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions
*https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons
If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available.
