T-40 system restore with recovery CDs to rid myself of a virus

I have a T-40 (Type 2373-19U) and yes, it's ancient in computer terms, but my T-40 has served me well, survived several upgrades and up until now I have also avoided getting viruses.  I back up regularly so I was thinking of doing a restore to factory settings to make sure the virus is kicked off my machine.  Does anyone have experience working with the T-40 Recovery CDs?  Do I just pop them into the machine and turn it on?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

greener37923, welcome to the forum,
if you still have the service partition intact you don't need the cds to return to factory settings; when you see the IBM BIOS splash screen press the F11 key and the system will load into the Rescue and recovery enviroment, you can then restore to factory from there.
If you do have to use the cds, as you said; just "pop them in" and go for it. You shouldn't have any problems.

so what exactly is not working? is it not prompting you?

  • Trying to do a System Restore with No Luck :(

I'm trying to do a system restore on my Satellite L455-S5975 following the directions in the actual user's guide here...
    Satellite L450 Series User’s Guide
I'm starting on page 60 and trying to do the "Recover to out-of-box state" ....Following these directions I continued on to the next step...."See “Recovering to out-of-box state (recommended recovery method)” on page 61."  I made sure to follow all the directions before beginning this next step...."To recover the original factory image using the utilities on your
    computer’s internal storage drive:
1 Make sure the computer is turned off.
2 Press and hold the 0 (zero) key on your keyboard while
    powering on the computer.
    3 If your system offers a choice of Windows® 7 32-bit or 64-bit
operating system, select one at this time. If not, skip to step 4."
I was holding down that zero key what seemed like forever....I never got the screen with a choice of Windows and so I continued holding down that zero key and finally the screen had cleared (gone grey like) but I still was holding down that zero key...Now in step 4 it says..."4 A warning screen appears, stating that when the recovery is executed all data will be deleted and rewritten. Click Yes to continue."
    (Sample Image) Warning screen
Even with me holding down that zero key I never got to this screen. So I shut down the laptop and let it sit for about 5 min.. and then I tried it again and when I was still holding the zero key and the screen had finally cleared (gone grey like) I took my finger off that zero key this time hoping that the Warning Screen would come up....But the only thing that happened was Windows started and I had to shut it down again.. After 5 min I took the battery pack out and let it sit for about an hour and then I put it back in and plugged it back into the AC and tried this again.....and I got the same thing as before. So I don't know what I'm doing wrong and hoping someone can help me get past this step please..
    Thank You

  • IPod 1st Generation Touch- System Restore from Recovery Mode

My iPod Touch 1st Generation worked fine one day and the next day all it would do is disply the little white "Apple" and then go black.  It was fully powered.  I opened my Itunes account and connected the iPod. Nothing.  Then I saw on a previous discussion board to hold the power and home button at the same time while hook to my computer. A graphic of the usb cord and Itunes appeared, and the Itunes account recognized the device but said it was in "Recovery Mode" and in order to have it work again I would need to allow for a system restore.  So I did.  It seemed to go through the process and then tried to re-sync.  It has now been "syncing" for over an hour.  It is stuck.  I can not do anything, even if I disconnect the iPod from the computer.  I have no idea what to do, I am super frusterated. My iTunes account seems to be locked and have not made any progress with the iPod of getting past any other graphic other grapic besides the usb/iTunes picture.  Please help if possible.
Also, since it is a 1st generation, I recently upgrade the OS to the only allow upgade however, I am not sure which one it was.  This is the first problem I have had with my iPod.  Apologize for the lack of specifics.
    Thanks much in advance.

Close iTunes and disconnect the iPod from the computer. Reboot the computer. Then try to restore again.
    - Try as necessary:
    - A reset.
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Placing the iPod in
    Recovery mode
    - Placing the iPod in DFU mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - Both those modes require that you turn the iPod fully off. If you can't do that let the battery fully drain. After charging for at least an hour try the reset.and restore again.
    - If still not successful time for an appointment a the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

    Hi Mike:
The second chapter of this saga.
I did order the recovery USB.
I did what it was asking and wiped out the HDD clean.
But the system is still unstable.
It took a very long time to configure itself. Several times I had to run the process again because it would either not boot or it would be just sitting there at the attached screen.
Sometimes it would go to Win8 boot window, but then suddenly come back to the same screen.
It seems that HDD is completly out. What is the warranty on the HDD? This laptop is just two years old.
And a side note: we had to send it for repairs twice already for monitor issues; the keyboard is not flat; there are some loose parts inside. I really expected better quality from such a reputable brand as TOSHIBA.

  • I have lost my toolbar and task bar. I have tried all the sugestions on this site to no avail. I don't know how to try a system restore with out them.

I was enlarging pictures on Facebook to full screen. When i went to move on. All my tool bars and my task bar have disappeared. I have tried all the suggestions on this site to no avail. I don't know how to do a system restore without my task bar, and don't want to lose my book marks. Please help, i can't grt to my important favorite sites.

Can you launch a new window (Ctrl+n for a normal window, Ctrl+Shift+p for a private window) that has the usual complement of toolbars? If a new window also is missing bars, try using the View menu > Toolbars list to restore them. If the classic menu bar is not displayed, usually tapping the Alt key or the F10 key will show it temporarily.

  • System restore from recovery partition

Yes, this question has probably been asked many times, but I cannot find a working answer in this forum. Apologies for that.
Something corrupted very important files on my Sattelite L870D in a way that it doesn't boot any more. I can power it up in the recovery partition on the disk (F12+power). It goes into all teh possible options and such.
But, is there a way I can recover back the factory image, or at least bootable Windows 8.1 image from this recovery partition? There are two disks ther - X: and H: - with some files. One of the recovery options asks to use a disk - either extenal DVD/USB or network. Is it the only option? There are no working images on those partitions on the HDD (other than C?

  • I completed a system restore with no backup. can i recover my files?

    Hii
I completed a system recovery to factory condition and i had backed up my files too. it turns they hadnt been backed up so now i have lost all my files. Is there any way i can retrieve my files, any way at all please???

Where did you save the backup files? If they are on dvd or external usb hdd look for an .EXE file in the list. Run it to extract the files to a folder on your laptop.
If you saved backup files to the D;\Recovery partition before resetting they may be gone. Try Easeus Data Recovery on the C drive to see if any can be found:

  • Restoring itunes library after OP system restore with user file backup option in Windows Vista

Trojan virus hit my computer and we had to restore for a backup. I had to redownload iTunes program, and my songs are not in there. And the songs that were in my original itunes library were saved to my computer, but when i try to open them, itunes opens, but nothing happens. Please help with this! If I synch my ipod to my computer, to the new itunes, will it wipe verything on my ipod, or will it tell me that there are things that are on my ipod that are not in my itunes library and it will ask if I want to transfer them? PLEASE HELP WITH THIS!!!!!

    Try this:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
This will move the contents of the iPod to your computer. and sync the iPod to the computer.
It appears to me that something is wrong/corrupt with your music backup.

  • I downloaded the iOS6 and since I have lost ALL of the data on my phone and had to start everything over.  Now that I did a system restore (with no backup), I no longer have a youtube icon.  I have done a reset settings in the general tab and no help.

I have tried the "reset all settings" and it did not bring the icon/app back.  I have also used the search feature to see if it is 'hiding' somewhere and it is not found.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I have already lost all of my contacts and calendars, so this has been a bad day.  I went to the apple store and we sppent 2 hours trying to retreive stuff but to no avail.  I did not notice that the youtube app was missing when I left or I would have asked while I was there.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Help with Photoshop Elements 10 after system restore

Hi I need some help and guidance. I have successfully installed my Photoshop Elements 10 twice now; once on my own; and following a MS Vista System Restore; with the help of Adobe support . I then worked on it for a day and all was well.
But unbeknown to me at the time, I had a MS System corruption that was causing Boot issues resulting in a forced Restore of my system and both Restores caused the Photoshop elements desk-top shortcut to disappear and a subsequent PSE10 re-install to fail with the dreaded Data7 , and "Application Shared Technologies" and rollback of Orgainizer and Editor etc etc.
I now realise that the two events were connected and the Adobe Support Person helped me get PSE10 up and running but it involved a lot of file permission changes etc, which lost me in the process, which was done remotely. PS Great customer support!!
After sorting out my MS Vista problem due to "Corrupt System" files, I now need to get my PSE10 up and running again; but how?
    Regards John

Have you tried uninstalling and installing again?
    thanks.

  • Problems trying to do a system restore

I have a Toshiba Satellite A215-S4717 laptop. My touchpad mouse is only working intermittently. I have updated all the drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled the mouse, nothing is working. The tech support people tell me it's not a hardware problem since it does work occasionally, and that my best option is a full system restore with the restore discs. I don't have my restore discs.
I am trying to restore the system from the computer's hard-drive. I've tried following the directions, but the computer asks for an admin password before I can proceed past the first screen and I don't have that. Is there a way to fix that?
Also, is there a screenshot tutorial on how to restore the system? Because the instructions given on this website do not match what is appearing on my computer screen.

  • I did a system restore and ... Help!

Hello,  with this even my husband can not help... I think I lost ALL my docs after a system resrore, this is what I did.  Maybe someone knows what went wrong and help me fix [it if not, at least cry with me].
My laptop is a Satellite A55 with XP Home Edition.  Everything started when my laptop stopped seeing the Mat**bleep**a UJDA 760 DVD/CDRW.  It said the Driver was either missing or corrupted. Looked for this (##@??!!!!) driver everywhere (I found out that I'm not alone in this...) My husband suggested as a last resort to go for the system restore.  I did a System Restore with the Toshiba Recovery and Applications / Drivers Media. It worked the DVD/CDRW was back but now the REAL problem began. As instructed I made a Backup but into a 8G removable HDD. (D:/) because C:/ did not have enough space.  On recovery I was not asked for "restore" options in any way, shape or form.  Afterwards I could not access my backup files, or restore them. I went to the C:/ Properties > Tools were I started the Backup to begin with but there was no Backup/Restore option.  Looking in Help, it said to go to Accessories > System tools > Backup/Restore, but there was not Backup/R option either.
Another detail that "poped up" after this B/R is a pop up blocker that I have never seen before, it appears in the little hand cursor as an ! in red surrounded by yellow and a red border.  I don't know were it is, were it comes from or how to turn it off.  Any ideas...  Sorry for the mistakes the spell check pop up will not pop

You used Ntbackup.exe to make it?

  • Pavilion m6 1045dx system restore

About 2 months ago my computer was in the process of completing an automatic update when it failed to restore my files and settings.  I have attempted Windows System Restore on many different occasions but to no avail.  It always fails to load my files and settings.  One error I get is, "System Restore could not access a file because an anti-virus program was running (0x80070005).  I disabled and then uninstalled that software and still no effect.
Now, I can no longer go back far enough to pick a restore point that includes my original settings.  At this point, I have accepted that what files that weren't backed up since the  last time I did so have been lost and I see my only option as doing a complete system restore to factory settings.  My question is will I require any system cds to complete this?  If I do, I'm up $hit creek and would welcome any other suggestions as the cds are in Montana and I am now living in Australia.
    TIA,
    Crista

As long as the Recovery partition is intact you should not require the recovery cd/dvd.
