"T" Boot Firewire from G4 freezes on new IMac

I was recently asked to transfer large amounts of files from a Dual Proc G4 (one of the original dual proc systems) to a new IMac G5 (the one with the built in camera, magnetic remote etc.) The G4 will boot into Firewire mode ("T" Boot) fine and appear as an external FD drive on the IMac's desktop HOWEVER when trying to open the "Firewire" drive, the spinning beachball appears and never goes away. I have to force the IMac off by holding the power switch the usual 8-10 seconds.
What is strange is that the G4 ALSO has to be forced to power off. Normally when powering off the "T" booted G4, shutoff is almost instantaneous. I did a disk permissions (several permissions repaired) and even a disk repair (no problems found) but the problem continued. The G4 has a 30 Gig HD (3.5 Gig free)
Using an external FW HD on the G5 IMac resulted in perfectly normal operation including booting from the external FW drive. The problem does not appear to be with the IMac!
The G4 Graphite is running 10.3.9 (7W98) while the IMac is running 10.4.? (I forgot to look for the specific version.)
I did a disk permisssions on the IMac and it came out normal.
I ran out of time but I wonder if resetting NV or P RAM on the G4 would help? That will be my next try when I can get access to the system again. Is there anything else you could suggest to try and let the IMac actually open the "T" booted "External FW HD" from the G4?
The G4 will run normally when it is booted off of its on hard drive. It does appear to be a bit slow in shutting down but maybe I am overly concerned since this system does have a bunch of files on it.
I will also be trying the reverse route, i.e. booting the IMac into "T" mode and seeing if the G4 can open it to allow the files to be transferred. That is my next step.
Is there anything else you could suggest to try and let the IMac actually open the "T" booted "External FW HD" from the G4?

Any additional third party peripherals connected to the target machine may slow it down. In addition, if the target machine hasn't had its clock battery replaced in over 3 years, and that battery is dying that can also slow or cause the Firewire bus to not work at all. Before zapping or resetting the NVRAM, be sure the battery is current.

  • How to move iPhoto Library from  MacBookPro (Leopard) to new iMac (Mavericks)

    Hi,
I've just purchased a new iMac and want to move my iPhoto Library from my older (2008) MacbookPro. Have looked it up and tried to do so, by copying the iPhotoLibrary file from the old machine to the new, and starting iPhoto with option key down & pointing to the new library. When that didnt work, I tried booting with the option & command down, and attempted to Repair, and then to Rebuild the Library.
In all cases, iPhoto opens, but doesnt see any photos in the iPhoto Library. The iPhoto Library works fine on the old macbook pro.
    What shall I do?
    Thanks
    Tom

Ok I know it's been awhile but I finally was able to try your suggestion.
I downloaded iPhoto Library Manager on my macbook pro, connected my macbook pro to my new iMac and did a Rebuild Library from the existing library on the macbook pro, setting it up to save to my new iMac.
It began to do the rebuild (though there were many "unreadable files") and went through the operation, which looked like it was going to take several hours to complete.
But at a certain point (after an hour or so), the macbook pro complained that I dont have enough space on my startup disk!!
So I can only guess that the rebuild must have done something to the original iPhoto Library after all (even though the settings on my iPhoto are to NOT  copy files to Library on import if that matters...). The Library is 32 Gb though I dont remember what it's size was before...
Sure enough, my starup Macintosh HD now has only 1GB space on it. Yikes!
    I stopped the rebuild process.
Not sure if I need to now just trash the original library to make space on my HD (of course I can save it elsewhere in case its useful), but since the rebuild didnt even get halfway through its process, the rebult library on the new iMac isnt going to do me any good. Maybe I've just lost all the years of work I've done organizing my library. Maybe I just need to start over with new kind of software (or using iPhoto start again from scratch on the new iMac).
What do you think happened? I thought the rebuild wouldnt affect the original library.

  • Having difficulty migrating info from MacBook Pro to new iMac

I have been trying to migrate my information from my MacBook Pro (10.9.1) to my new iMac (10.9.1).  I've connected the two via ethernet.  They are recognizing each other, but then one or the other seems to shut off and requires me to enter my password and it stalls the whole process.  I've attempted this migration at least 5 times now (or more) and the same thing keeps happening.  Any suggestions?

I just got a new iMac on January 2nd, and moved 320GB worth of data from my external Time Machine backup drive (a Firewire drive connected to the new iMac via the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter) to the new iMac in about 3 hours or so.  This was all done via Setup Assistant, not Migration Assistant (which can be run later on for those in a hurry to use their new Mac).
It almost sounds to me as if you're transferring everything via WiFi.

When I try starting Photoshop, for example, it tells me uninstall then reinstall the product OR contact product support.
However, when I phone product support, it says there is no product support for CS3 and to go to the Forums.
    Thank you.

  • HT4413 I migrating from my macbook to new imac. nothing showed up until I turned off the imac but everything I had done previously on the imac disappeared.

I was migrating from macbook to a new imac.
Nothing showed up until I turned off the imac.
When I restarted the imac everythign I'd previously done was gome and the migrated macbook desktop had taken over.
How do I bring back the original imac settings.
    Thanks

You can't. When you migrate user accounts, those settings will be used. That's the point of migrating, not to have to reset things Peruse Pondini's Setup New Mac guide for details.
If you want to revert to the original user settings, create an new admin user account. That'll use the default user setup.

Can I install CS6 from old Mac on new iMac using apple's migration-assitent?

you may be lucky, but you should expect problems if you do that.
you should properly install your adobe software using the adobe installation files.

  • Transferring files from MacBook Pro to new iMac via Firewire

    Hi guys
My MacBook Pro is seriously on its way out and I would like to transfer my music files, work documents, photographs, videos etc. onto my brand new iMac and the best way to do this I would think would be to link the two up via Firewire. The MacBook Pro is no longer accepting my external hard drive and fails during during DVD's, so those options are out.
So I was wondering if someone could advise me on what type of Firewire cable to get. As far as I'm aware I didn't get one with either the MacBook Pro or the new iMac, so I think a purchase is necessary however, I've spotted that there are different kinds with different ends, some which have 6-pin, 8-pin and 9-pin and I have no idea what to get. Could someone advise me on what would be the best item to get for this situation?
My MacBook Pro is one that was the model before the black keyboards came back in, and the iMac is the brand new one at 21".
    Thanks for your help guys.
    Steve.

    Hi
FireWire 800 / FW800 / IEEE 1394b uses a 9-pin connector for both the imac and the macbook pro.
    good luck.

  • How do I migrate from a firewire backup disc to a new iMac?

The drive on my 27 inch iMac (late 2007 model) has stopped working, so I need to get a new iMac. My old iMac has a bootable backup on an external firewire drive. How do I migrate the backup to the iMac, which has no firewire input?

Connect it through a FireWire to Thunderbolt adapter.

  • What do I need to migrate files from old eMac to new iMac?

I just purchased a new iMac and need to transfer information from my old eMac to the new one. I have not even taken the iMac out of the box, just read over the booklet.
What do I need to have to be prepared to migrate information from the start up application?  USB cable? Firewire cable? I just want to be prepared so I can get it done at one setting.  There isn't a lot of room on the desk for 2 Mac's for an extended period of time.

When you boot the new Mac, choose Migration Assistant to transfer all your data.

  • Migrating from old G5 to new iMac

    Hello
At work, as a graphic designer, I use a 5 year old G5 on OS 10.5.8. I am about to upgrade to a brand new iMac and was wondering what the best way would be to go about transferring files/software from the G5 to the iMac.
I have been advised to use Migration Assistant but have no experience of using this software whatsoever, so would appreciate any advice or tips.
At the moment the G5 has a number of accounts set up on it. One is mine, the other is an old account belonging to the last designer I replaced, and one is an account set up by our IT department even though they never use the mac. Ideally I'd like to just have one account for the iMac to stop any confusion or problems (when I replaced the old designer my new account was set up for me by the IT dept and I've had non-stop problems with file permissions/authentification etc ever since).
Will MA get rid of the permission problems I've been having? Do I need to transfer all accounts?
Does MA transfer settings and password info, or will this need to be recorded and re-entered manually?
Would I be better off just transferring everything manually?
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated!
    Thanks.

Remove the unwanted accounts from System Preferences > Accounts. Unlock the prefs by clicking the lock at the bottom and authenticating with your admin password. Select the account to delete and click the minus sign at the bottom of the window. You may be asked if you want to preserve the data or completely delete; choose the complete deletion. Do that for both surplus accounts.
BTW, you can only do this if you're logged in as admin user yourself.
When you're happy that you've got rid of all the extraneous stuff, don't use MA. On first boot of the new Mac you'll be offered the option to transfer files from another source (this is Setup Assistant). Connect the two by firewire and choose 'from another Mac'. Continue with the initial setup as prompted.
Note that transferring all your stuff may take quite a long time (hours).
Using Setup Assistant at first boot ensures you get one account with all the correct permissions.
Using Migration Assistant after creating an account can lead to serious permissions problems, duplicated data and other problems.

  • Unresponsive / WindowServer freezing on new iMac

    Hello,
While editing images in Aperture, I am encountering frequent freezing.  Aperture becomes unresponsive for several seconds to half a minute or more, and then starts to respond again.  It has occured after using a few different types of brushes, but happens most consistently when I do skin smoothing.  When it freezes, the entire system is inaccessible -- I cannot switch to other applications or bring up the Dock.  Also, the mouse pointer does _not_ change to a beachball.
I am running Aperture 3.4.4 in Mountain Lion on a brand new 2012 iMac 27" 3.4 GHz with NVidia 680MX, 24GB ram and 1TB Fusion Drive.  My photos are on the Fusion dive and it has a lot of free space.  The photos are managed in the Aperture library (not referenced).
I checked the Console and the WindowServer is showing a lot of messages like this:
2013-04-27 4:52:13.191 PM WindowServer[108]: disable_update_likely_unbalanced: UI updates still disabled by application "Aperture" after 16.39 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds). Likely an unbalanced disableUpdate call.

    I tried the following:
    1.  Disk Utilty repair permissions
    2.  All three of Repair Permissions / Repair Database / Rebuild Database on my Aperture library
    3.  Deleted Aperture preferences from ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
    4.  Deleted the Aperture cache from ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Aperture and re-started.
Unfortunately the problem is still happening.  The new iMac seems to be working reliably in other applications and is a very fast machine.  I am at a loss for what else to do.

    Léonie,
Thanks for replying.   To summarize the steps Linc Davis suggested for diagnosis:
Step 1.  Log in under Guest account and see if problem occurs (to isolate whether it is localized to my user account).
Step 2.  Boot in Safe Mode and see if the problem occurs (to isolate whether it is caused by third party kernel extensions etc. installed on the system)
Step 3.  Run several terminal commands to list what third party extensions etc. are on the system.
Step 4.  Boot from a clean install of Mountain Lion on an external drive and see if the problem still occurs.
I will try Step 1 and Step 2 first and post back.
In the other thread, the user is encountering WindowServer freezes in many applications (Safari, Mail, Activity Monitor…).  So far for me, the problem is isolated to Aperture only.

  • What do I need to support my FireWire 800 gear on a new iMac

I need to replace my antique mac pro 1.1
I am now retired and my needs tend more towards games than av creation so the new Mac Pro is not only overkill but the dual video I here is not optimized for games in any case.
The problem is all of my existing FireWire 800 gear and no FireWire ports on the new iMac designs
I guess I need to buy an external thunderbolt case for the 4 2 terabyte drives in the old pro do any of the external T-bolt cases offer good FireWire 800 support (full speed support) for all of my old gear?
Are there other ways to support these devices than an external t-bolt case for sata drives?
And for a game playing iMac is a fusion drive or a large solid state drive best choice bearing in mind I will have about 10 terabytes of FireWire and t-bolt external storage ( I was thinking of making the drives in the required t-bolt external case a raid array for best performance)
So what external t-bolt drive case should I buy and if it does not support a set of FireWire 800 ports what external t-bolt gadget for that support should I buy?
    Thanks

    Windshadow99 wrote:
I looked at those but would it not be far better to have a gadget that plugged into a t-bolt port and then had a bunch of FireWire 800 ports on it? There must be lots of folks that like me invested in FW800 gear with their older computers and need something like this.
Perhaps, though as with anything it depends on your needs. I don't know of any such device, though. All the Thunderbolt docks I've seen that have Firewire at all have only a single port. You could use a TBolt to FW adapter with Thunderbolt ports in a dock, though. A Firewire hub isn't a lot of good other than providing multiple connectors since all devices are on the same FW bus and hence not really much different from daisy-chaining. There's certainly no performance improvement and probably not much in the way of stability improvement either.
I was told a long time ago back in the mac 2fx sccsi days that daisy chaining things should be avoided and  giving things their own pro was better does this advice sill hold good?
SCSI was very different (and usually wasn't a problem as long as it was terminated correctly). Daisy-chaining FW is different, though it very much depends on the devices and the sort of throughput you need. Daisy-chaining Thunderbolt should be no problem at all as long as the devices support it.
    Regards.

  • Transfer data from FW drive to new imac

My previous imac died (logic board) and the HD from it is now in a firewire enclosure. Any tips on the best way to transfer data such as addresses, email etc.. to my new imac?

Hi Steve, Welcome back to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
Mine was a '99 G4 which blew a CRT Capacitor, I think, and took the Video Card with it. I put the HD in an external FWHD case and followed Kappy. My main prob was finding an up to date Quicken File—took forever but finally found one. Reinstalled M$ Office and Quicken from their discs per Kappy.
I now keep a relatively current BU on an OWC FWHD using SuperDuper. Paid their $27.95 and make 'Smart BUs' which take ~6-7 mins for ~1 gig of 20 gig to update.

  • Migrating iTunes, iPhoto from external drives to new iMac

We've finally decided to upgrade from our trusty Power Mac G4 tower (10.4.11) we've had since 2002 to a new 21.5-inch iMac. It arrives tomorrow.
I'm already anticipating problems migrating to the new system, tho'. The 20Gb startup disk seemed science-fiction large in 2002, but obviously we quickly ran out of space. Currently, our iPhoto library lives on a second internal SATA HD, and iTunes on an external FireWire drive.
What's going to be the best way to migrate all that stuff to the new iMac's 2Tb (science fiction numbers, again!) drive? Will the migration assistant find the iPhoto and iTunes files on those other disks?

    den.thed wrote:
Open iTunes on your new iMac and go to File > Add to Library then navigate to the iTunes library on the External HD and hit the Choose button.
Do the same for iPhoto File > Add to Library while your connected to the G4.
Just for clarity's sake, you're talking about selecting the iTunes/iPhoto media folders, right? Not selecting each file individually, I hope.
And from what you're saying, it doesn't sound like Migration Assistant is going to pull anything over from my old iTunes or iPhoto settings, much less media stored on external/expansion drives, is that correct? I'll have to drag those files over via Ethernet, I imagine.
