T100 won't use NIS / won't authenticate correctly.

Hi all,
I have a T1000 box and a Blade 1000 desktop both running Solaris 10. We recently moved our NIS master server from one linux server to another, both running Centos 5.
I sys-unconfigured both Solaris machines, and reconfigured them to use the new NIS server. All our Linux machines also use it, and authenticate correctly.
The machines bind to the domain correctly, ypwhich, ypcat, etc all run correctly.
If I ypcat the passwd and shadow files I get the same as every other machine. I can copy the output into /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow and then log-in correctly.
I can su - to the account and get logged in too, so no issue there. In fact, I have ssh keys set up on one account and that account logs in correctly, so I assume I have a problem with the actual authentication.
I originally have SHA-256 encryption on the main linux NIS server, but I backed that down to md5, and as above, I know the passwd strings work, as I can log in when I copy them into the local files.
my /etc/nsswitch.conf has both passwd, and group set to use 'files, nis', if I remove nis then I can't log in at all using a nis account. I get the 'go away' message.
Any ideas?

Are you merging the passwd and shadow files?
In the /var/yp/Makefile on the NIS server look for the line:
MERGE_PASSWD=
it probably needs to be set to true.
Keep in mind, you may want to use a passwd.adjunt map to reduce the exposure of encrypted passwords.
We are running or NIS server on RHEL 4.7 so your mileage my vary a little.

Touch Mail won't use SSL or authenticate SMTP

I am using a Touch with WiFi for everything successfully except the Mail. Despite verifying that all Mail settings have been correctly entered as per my provider (Roadrunner in Milwaukee WI), I keep getting setup messages that the Touch cannot use SSL and cannot authenticate SMTP server. As I understand it, there is no Edge involved with a Touch to get in the way. My servers are pop-server.wi.rr.com and smtp-server.wi.rr.com. My provider confirmed that I had entered my settings correctly.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this? If my PC successfully accesses the mail via the same WiFi, why can the Touch not connect?

I have a different provider (WOW), but had the same problem. Here is what worked for me. Set up a new account, just as you have tried in the past. When you get the message that it failed on SSL and asks if you want to try without, answer NO and then save the account. It will warn you that it won't work, but that's OK.
Now from Settings/Mail,Contacts,Calendars, select the account you just created. Scroll down and select SMTP. Now select the server for your provider (which may be the only one shown). If the server port is not already 25, change it to that. Go back twice, to get to the main settings screen for that account, and this time select Advanced. On this screen, set the Server Port to 110.
Save your changes and try it now. Good luck; hope this works!

MBP won't use full external display

Hello,
I got home today, turned on my computer while connected to an external monitor and all of a sudden, my MBP (13", late 2011) won't use the whole display. Instead the screen is squashed and i got two black gaps on either side of the monitor. The resolution is set to 1920*1080 as always, so that isn't the problem. Also, when I set the monitor to all other resolutions, it stretches all the way out, it's only on 1080 it doesn't work even though 1920*1080 should fill out the whole screen, while some of the other resolutions shouldn't. I have the displays set to extend, so the MBP's display is set to 1280*800 as usually, and everything functions perfectly on both displays except for the gaps.
I've tried closing the lid and playing around with the external monitor itself, but I get the same results. I've also reset the PRAM and SMC; same thing.
I can also add that on the Windows part (Boot Camp installed) it just plain won't recognize the external display at all. Everything worked this morning...

Wow, excuse me, figured it didn't matter much, given that is has worked flawlessly before. Just figured it was a software issue. Anywho, external monitor is an Acer P246H 24" I believe.
I have tried the detect displays too, and I've also tried and see whether it was the monitor tuning in weirdly on the resolution, but it doesn't even have an option to squash the image, only move it side to side.
Since it is a plug and play screen, and it has worked before, I figure it will work again, if there is someway to reset the drivers and make the computer reset it's external display settings so that it will just recognize the display as a new one the next time it is plugged in? The WIndows and OS X problem happened on the exact same time though (after i rebooted from Windows into OS X after not being able to connect, the resolution problem came).

You can go back by restoreing your backup of the iPhoto library from the previous version a installing the previous version for its original source

Is it the "you just upgraded" page appearing in a new window? That is not supposed to appear after the first time. What do you mean it won't let you? What exactly does it say? (Sorry to sound so exasperated but this is like the 6th post in a row where people have made vague statements which do little to help us find solutions without a game of 20 questions.) I'm going to guess and say you can only deauthorize a computer to which you have physical access or VPN login. The alternative is to deauthorize all which you can only do once a year.

PS CS5 32-bit won't use GPU acceleration

I have CS5 32- and 64-bit installed on both my desktop and my notebook. My desktop runs Win 7 x64 Biz and has an nVidia GTX275 display card. The notebook is a Sony runs Win 7 x64 Home and uses the nVidia GT300M. Though the notebook is numerically higher, the GTX is suppose to be more advanced.
This is my problem: The notebook uses the GPU Open GL feature without a problem in either version. My desktop, however, only uses the Open GL for the 64-bit. In 32-bit, the option is grayed out. Can anyone point me to why the desktop 32-bit Photoshop can't/won't use the GPU hardware acceleration? I have the most recent drivers installed, so I know that's not the issue. Thanks.

Yes, the driver is the issue.
Photoshop only enables the GPU support if the driver says it is capable, and if the driver doesn't return errors.
Somehow your 32 bit driver either thinks it is not capable, or is returning errors when it shoudn't be.

Brand new x64 using ethernet won't stop spooling

Brand new 5740 using ethernet won't stop spooling. I can copy but I can't printing from HP Envy. It looks like the message is not reaching the printer.

Let's first run the Print and Scan Doctor. The HP Print and Scan Doctor is a free utility (tool) that helps to quickly resolve common printing, scanning and connectivity issues including but not limited to:

If the issue perists, hold down the Windows Logo key () on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box
Type services.msc and press Enter
Locate Print Spooler and double click on it to open the Spooler properties
Make sure startup type is set to Automatic, if it is not please click on the drop down and choose Automatic
Under Service status, please Stop the server, and then wait a moment and click Start

Do you just want to delete the music or wipe the whole phone since you've switched to the other one?
If you plug the old iPhone into your computer you can remove stuff via iTunes or remove stuff directly from the iPhone too.

you cannot remove any native apps that was installed by the ios. Apple community forums have many posts about this. No way to remove them.

Time Machine won't use existing backup folder

Time machine gave me the can't find back up drive error. I did what the support site says, went into the preferences, and reselected the appropriate drive, but now it won't use the existing backup folder. It keeps making a new one called 'user's MacBook Pro 2'. How do I force it to use the old folder, so that I can access my old back-ups?

First, you need to determine WHY it's not choosing to continue using the previous backups.
Has your computer changed in some way? Logic board replaced by Apple?
You reinstalled the Mac OS X system software?
*_Time Machine Always Performs a Full Backup After a Full Restore_*
Actually, this is normal. Anytime your hardware has changed, or you have reinstalled the operating system again, Time Machine will perform a new full backup. Consider the following according to the KB article below:
*Full Backup After Restore*
Bear in mind that in all cases Time Machine will perform a full backup after a full restore. This is normal. Time Machine will resume incremental backups after the full backup has completed. To view previous backups, Control-click or right-click the Time Machine icon in your Dock or Option-click the Time Machine menu extra and Choose "Browse Other Time Machine Disks," then select your previous backup volume. You will enter Time Machine and be able to browse your previous back ups and restore files. [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338]
So even on unchanged hardware, if you reinstall your system software and restore your user data, Time Machine starts anew, and you will not be able to resume backing up with the same history as the previous backups.
While there may be ways to fool/hack Time Machine into recognizing previous backups without performing another full backup, they are likely rather elaborate.
Ultimately, though, in a couple of months, all the effort to preserve old backups may seem pointless. After all, Time Machine will eventually purge away that data anyways as it replaces it with new files.
It may simply be easier to begin a fresh series of backups while saving the previous backups until your satisfied that you have enough history built up. Then delete the old backups.

The new machine has Mavericks which is fine. And I will leave it as is. I don’t want anything from my old machine other than 2 apps that I will need on the new one. I want to be able to install those apps that I bought from the App Store onto my new computer. I assume Apple doesn’t want me to have the apps installed on 2 machines at the same time so I wonder if just uninstalling them from my old machine will release them for re-install on the new one.
